Four seal species (Phoca caspica, Phoca sibirica, Phoca hispida and Phoca largha) and one whale (Orcinus orca) from Russia and Japan were examined to determine the body distribution, bioaccumulation and contamination status of tris(4-chlorophenyl) methane (TCPMe) and tris(4-chlorophenyl) methanol (TCPMOH). Lipid normalized concentrations of TCPMe and TCPMOH were comparable in various organs and tissues, implying that their body distribution is followed to the lipid-dependent accumulation, similar to that for other organochlorines. The highest body burden of these compounds was found in the blubber. Bioaccumulation potential of TCPMe and TCPMOH was high and comparable to PCBs and DDTs. Relatively higher concentrations of TCPMe and TCPMOH were observed in Caspian seal than in other seal species examined. TCPMOH concentration in killer whale was the highest of the marine mammals examined. Another peak detected had similar mass spectrum to TCPMOH, however, at a different retention time, suggesting the presence of an isomer of TCPMOH. 相似文献

The Makran accretionary complex shows a distinct bottom-simulating reflector, indicating a thick gas-hydrate-bearing horizon
between the deformational front and about 1350 m water depth which seals off the upward flow of gas-charged fluids. A field
of presently inactive mud diapirs with elevations up to 65 m was discovered in the abyssal plain seawards of the deformation
front, suggesting that in the past conditions were favorable for periodic but localized vigorous mud diapirism. Regional destabilization
of the gas hydrate leading to focused flow was observed where deep-penetrating, active faults reach the base of the gas-hydrate
layer, as in a deeply incised submarine canyon (2100–2500 m water depth). At this location we discovered seeps of methane
and H2S-rich fluids associated with chemoautotrophic vent faunas (e.g., Calyptogena sp.). Driven by the accretionary wedge dynamics, the landward part of the gas-hydrate layer below the Makran margin is being
progressively uplifted. Due to reduced hydrostatic pressure and rising ocean bottom-water temperatures, gas hydrates are progressively
destabilized and dissociated into hydrate water, methane and H2S. Sediment temperatures lie outside the methane stability field wherever water depth is less than 800 m. Above this depth,
upward migration of fluids to the seafloor is unimpeded, thus explaining the abundance of randomly distributed gas seeps observed
at water depths of 350 to 800 m.

Sand storage dams are hydraulic retention structures that increase the volume of coarse sediments in seasonal sandy streams by exclusively blocking the bedload transport during runoff events. However,siltation of fine grain particles, which are transported as part of the suspended load, is a major factor causing sand storage dams to perform poorly. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the hydrological performance and cost-efficiency of 30 sand storage dams. This study also aimed to increase the understanding of critical factors which may affect the performance and lead to siltation of sand storage reservoirs. The analysis was based on a physical survey of 30 sand storage dams that were built in onestage in southeastern Kenya. Most of the study sites had the capacity to produce sand. However, the reservoirs suffered from severe siltation, which caused generalized low annual yields, reduced supply capacities, and low cost-efficiency. It is argued that the main factors for the poor performance were the high inter-and intra-annual variability of bedload transport, which coupled with the construction of onestage spillways, led to siltation of the reservoirs. Thus, large volumes of fine grain particles accumulated in the reservoirs during runoff events with bedload layer heights lower than the height of the one-stage spillways. To systematically maximize the robustness to the inherent variability of bedload transport, and ensure optimal performance levels by systematically minimizing siltation, spillways should be built in stages of reduced height. Thus, the lower the stage height, the higher the probability of maximizing the accumulation of coarse sediment. It is estimated that a multi-stage construction process with stage heights of 20 cm would have produced a performance 26 times higher. This implies that the 30 reservoirs would have had the capacity to supply 8516 people as compared to the current supply capacity of 330 people. Improvements in the performance of sand storage dams can greatly assist attempts to link this technology with income-generating activities for agropastoralists in arid and semi-arid areas. 相似文献

An integrated approach [field, Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR), hydrogeology, geodesy, and spatial analysis] was adopted to identify the nature, intensity, and spatial distribution of deformational features (sinkholes, fissures, differential settling) reported over fossil aquifers in arid lands, their controlling factors, and possible remedies. The Lower Mega Aquifer System (area 2 × 106 km2) in central and northern Arabia was used as a test site. Findings suggest that excessive groundwater extraction from the fossil aquifer is the main cause of deformation: (1) deformational features correlated spatially and/or temporally with increased agricultural development and groundwater extraction, and with a decline in water levels and groundwater storage (? 3.7 ± 0.6 km3/year); (2) earthquake events (years 1985–2016; magnitude 1–5) are largely (65% of reported earthquakes) shallow (1–5 km) and increased from 1 event/year in the early 1980s (extraction 1 km3/year), up to 13 events/year in the 1990s (average annual extraction > 6.4 km3). Results indicate that faults played a role in localizing deformation given that deformational sites and InSAR-based high subsidence rates (? 4 to ? 15 mm/year) were largely found within, but not outside of, NW–SE-trending grabens bound by the Kahf fault system. Findings from the analysis of Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment solutions indicate that sustainable extraction could be attained if groundwater extraction was reduced by 3.5–4 km3/year. This study provides replicable and cost-effective methodologies for optimum utilization of fossil aquifers and for minimizing deformation associated with their use. 相似文献

Although the behavior of friction sliding bearings is well understood, the failure behavior has not been thoroughly investigated. However, predicting and understanding the failure of bearings is an important key in designing isolated structures to minimize their collapse in extreme events, and thus, this study is critical. Because of its relative simplicity and particular availability in certain markets, the failure of the double friction pendulum (DFP) bearing at its physical displacement limit is investigated. The bearing is modeled with a rigid body model including inertia for each of the bearing components. A nonlinear viscoelastic impact model is included to simulate the impact between bearing components. As isolation systems are particularly vulnerable to long‐period excitations, analytical pulses are used as input excitations to investigate the influences of pulse parameters on the failure of DFP. The influences of DFP design parameters are investigated as well. To confirm that the response to the analytical pulses correctly represents the behavior under long‐period ground motions, wavelet analysis to is performed on 14 pairs of pulse‐type ground motion records to extract their pulses, and the failure prediction made from the extracted analytical pulse is compared with the failure from the real ground motions. Using the exceptional long-term monitoring capabilities of the MACHO project, we present here the optical history of LMC X-2 for a continuous 6-yr period. The high dynamism and complexity of braided networks poses a series of open questions, significant for river restoration and management. The present work is aimed at the characterization of the morphology of braided streams, in order to assess whether the system reaches a steady state under constant flow conditions and, in that case, to determine how it can be described and on which parameters it depends. A series of 14 experimental runs were performed in a laboratory physical model with uniform sand, varying the discharge and the longitudinal slope. Planimetric and altimetric configurations were monitored in order to assess the occurrence of a steady state. A set of parameters was considered, such as the braid‐plain width and the number and typology of branches and nodes. Results point out that a relationship exists between braiding morphology and two dimensionless parameters, related to total water discharge and stream power. We found that network complexity increases at higher values of water discharge and a larger portion of branches exhibits morphological activity. Results are then compared to the outputs of a simple one‐dimensional model, that allows to easily predict the average network complexity, once the bed topography is known. Model computations permit also the investigation of the effect of water discharge variations and to compare different width definitions. The at‐a‐station variability of planimetric parameters shows a peculiar behaviour, both regarding number of branches and wetted width. We adopt a multidisciplinary approach toward the quantitative assessment of juvenile fish habitats in Alpine rivers using
analytical modeling. The study focuses on braided and single-thread channel configurations together with their associated
hydrodynamic patterns. A distinct difference between flows in these channels is the number and spatial arrangement of recirculation
zones. These are due to the separation of flow from the river banks and result in a higher retention of flow in braided channels.
Braided channels were also shown to provide more favourable shelter and nursing conditions for fish larvae and juveniles by
mitigating high velocities during floods, by maintaining relatively shallow areas of flow, and by significant adjustments
in the thermal regime. A historical analysis revealed a significant reduction of braided reaches along Alpine rivers that
have most likely led to a significant degradation of the fish fauna. 相似文献
