Summary The observations of ten Aprils (1941–50) at Blue Hill have been analyzed, and it has been found that frost (night minimum temperature 32° F) (T) can be predicted on the basis of the 19h wet-bulb temperature (ti) by the formula:T=ti–k, in whichk is found to be 1.8 F deg. in clear weather and 2.1 F deg. in cloudy. The results of a test on an independent set of Aprils (1936–40), are satisfactory especially with clear skies at 19h.  相似文献

The removal of chemicals in solution by overland flow from agricultural land has the potential to be a significant source of chemical loss where chemicals are applied to the soil surface, as in zero tillage and surface‐mulched farming systems. Currently, we lack detailed understanding of the transfer mechanism between the soil solution and overland flow, particularly under field conditions. A model of solute transfer from soil solution to overland flow was developed. The model is based on the hypothesis that a solute is initially distributed uniformly throughout the soil pore space in a thin layer at the soil surface. A fundamental assumption of the model is that at the time runoff commences, any solute at the soil surface that could be transported into the soil with the infiltrating water will already have been convected away from the area of potential exchange. Solute remaining at the soil surface is therefore not subject to further infiltration and may be approximated as a layer of tracer on a plane impermeable surface. The model fitted experimental data very well in all but one trial. The model in its present form focuses on the exchange of solute between the soil solution and surface water after the commencement of runoff. Future model development requires the relationship between the mass transfer parameters of the model and the time to runoff to be defined. This would enable the model to be used for extrapolation beyond the specific experimental results of this study. The close agreement between experimental results and model simulations shows that the simple transfer equation proposed in this study has promise for estimating solute loss to surface runoff. While corporate adaptation strategies in response to climate change have been characterized, the determinants of adaptation have not been comprehensively analyzed. Knowledge of these determinants is particularly useful for policy makers to provide favorable conditions in support of corporate adaptation measures. Based on unique data from a survey of Swiss ski lift operators, this paper empirically examines such determinants at the business level. Our econometric analysis with linear regression and count data models finds a positive influence of the awareness of possible climate change effects on the scope of corporate adaptation. Surprisingly, no significant influence of the vulnerability to climate change effects on the scope of adaptation could be found. Finally, the dependency on the affected business and the ability to adapt influence the specific strategic directions of corporate adaptation.  相似文献

The ordering of Al and Si in gehlenite is considered using computer simulation. The enthalpy of ordering ΔH per 2Al+2Si atoms is found to be 0.52 eV. It is dominated by the nearest neighbour interaction, but the analysis is carried out to fifth neighbours. The nearest neighbour interaction differs significantly from that for other materials. The structure does not have a connected network of ordering sites, which mainly accounts for the unobservably low transition temperature for Al/Si ordering. Zusammenfassung Es werden Messanordnungen beschrieben, die für geoelektrische Tiefsondierungen bis ungefähr 4000 m geeignet sind. Anschliessend werden die erzielten Messergebnisse besprochen. Die Übereinstimmung zwischen der geoelektrischen Prognose und dem Ergebnis der Bohrung ist eine sehr gute. Die Abweichung schwankt im Mittel um ungefähr 8–13%.
Summary Some measurement methods are described for geoelectrical deepinvestigations down to a depth of 4000 m. Then the obtained results are discussed. The results of the geoelectrical deep-investigations were confirmed in a very satisfactory manner by deep drillings. The average limit of error of the geoelectrical predictions was ±8–13%.

 Pipe G3b is part of the Upper Cretaceous carbonatitic Gross Brukkaros Volcanic Field in southern Namibia. The pipe represents the root zone of a diatreme and is located 2800 m west of the rim of Gross Brukkaros, a downsag caldera. The pipe is exposed approximately 550 m below the original Upper Cretaceous land surface. It cuts down into its own feeder dyke, 0.3 m thick. The pipe coalesced from two small pipes and in plan view is 19 m long and 12 m wide. It consists of fragmented Cambrian Nama quartzites and shales of the Fish River subgroup. Despite intensive brecciation, the stratigraphic sequence of the country rocks is almost preserved in the pipe. In addition, the feeder dyke became fragmented too and can be traced in a 2- to 3-m-wide zone full of carbonatite blocks along the southern margin of the pipe. The void space of the breccia is 30–50% in volume. Finally, after the disruption of country rocks and feeder dyke, a little carbonatite magma intruded some of the void space. The breccia of pipe G3b is considered to represent a root zone at the transition from the feeder dyke into a diatreme above. Formation of the breccia required a shock wave thought to have been associated with a last explosion of the diatreme immediately above the present level of exposure. The Namibian margin is dominated by the late Proterozoic to early Cambrian fold belts of the Damara Orogen, which wrap around and separate the Congo and Kalahari Cratons. This mosaic of relatively ‘soft’ fold belts and ‘hard’ cratons apparently controlled the path for the opening of the South Atlantic in the early Cretaceous. The continents split along the coast-parallel fold belts of the Damara Orogen while the inland fold belt (Damara Belt) was effected by extension and widespread igneous intrusion but never developed to the rift stage. This paper is concerned with the interpretation of magnetotelluric (MT) data along a 200 km NW-SE profile across the Damara Belt in NW Namibia. The regional, two-dimensional electrical resistivity model and the induction vector data exhibit three distinctive zones: (i) a generally very resistive upper crust which is typical for the granites and metasediments of the Damara Belt, (ii) two subvertical conductors in upper to mid-crustal levels which correlate with major tectonic zone boundaries and (iii) a highly conductive middle to lower crust in the southern part of the profile. The geometry of the conductive structures could reflect a regional shear system in which upper crustal listric faults pass into a detachment zone in the middle crust. We interpret the high electrical conductivity in terms of graphite (or other forms of mineralization) enrichment along the shear planes. This zone of crustal weakness may have originated in Pre-Damara times and had probably experienced several episodes of crustal reactivation before the intrusion of basaltic dike swarms during the Cretaceous rifting and magmatism associated with the opening of the South Atlantic.  相似文献
