Enhancements in the auroral electrojets associated with magnetospheric substorms result from those in either the electric field or the ionospheric conductivities, or both. Their relative importance varies significantly, even during a single substorm, depending on the location as well as on the substorm phases. It is predicted that different parts of the electrojets tend to respond in different ways to substorm activity. The unprecedented, unique opportunity for CLUSTER spacecraft observations of electric/magnetic fields and precipitating particles, combined with radar measurements of ionospheric quantities and with ground magnetometers, will provide us with crucial information regarding the physical nature of the separation between the “electric field-dominant” and “conductivity-dominant” auroral electrojets. This study also discusses the implications of these two auroral-electrojet components in terms of solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere interactions. 相似文献

Bulk chemical compositions and oxygen isotopic compositions were analyzed for 48 stony cosmic spherules (melted micrometeorites) collected from the Antarctic ice sheet using electron- and ion-microprobes. No clear correlation was found between their isotopic compositions and textures. The oxygen isotopic compositions showed an extremely wide range from −28‰ to +93‰ in δ18O and from −21‰ to +13‰ in Δ17O. In δ18O-δ17O space, most samples (38 out of 48) plot close to the terrestrial fractionation line, but 7 samples plot along the carbonaceous chondrite anhydrous mineral (CCAM) line. Three samples plot well above the terrestrial fractionation line. One of these has a Δ17O of +13‰, the largest value ever found in solar system materials. One possible precursor for this spherule could be 16O-poor planetary material that is still unknown as a meteorite. Reanalysis of lunar seismic data collected during the Apollo program indicates that 23 of the 28 rare events known as high-frequency teleseismic (HFT) events or shallow moonquakes occurred during one-half of the sidereal month when the seismic network on the Moon's near side faced approximately towards right ascension of 12 h on the celestial sphere. Statistical analysis demonstrates that there is about a 1% probability that this pattern would occur by chance. An alternate possibility is that high-energy objects from a fixed source outside the Solar System trigger or even cause the HFT events. 相似文献

The micro-imaging dust analysis system (MIDAS) is an essential element among the scientific payload on the international Rosetta mission to comet 46P/Wirtanen. The MIDAS instrument based on an atomic force microscope (AFM) collects small particles drifting outwards from the nucleus surface. AFM is able to image small structures in 3D at nanometer-scale resolution. These images provide morphological and statistical information like grain size distribution on the dust population. In order to support the development of the flight hardware, optimisation of the control functions and consolidation of a proper scheme of data interpretation, laboratory studies with similar instruments were carried out. The obtained data demonstrate the capabilities of this technique. For the first time an instrument is able to observe the smallest (nm-sized) grains which are predicted by models and were to a certain extent deduced from previous measurements on the Giotto and Vega missions to comet 1P/Halley. On larger (μm-sized) particles the complex morphology will be visualised with high precision in 3D, and if present, within these aggregates crystalline materials with defined crystal faces can be identified. 相似文献

The heat needed to melt snow over the Tien Shan mountains and Japanese Islands for 10-day period (TDP) was estimated. Melting curves and a map of snowmelt duration were obtained through the long-term data from 79 stations in the Tien Shan mountains and 20 stations in the Japanese Islands. At high elevations in the mountains, about 40% of the snow melts during penultimate 10 days of snow cover. In the Japanese Islands, about 80% of the snow melts during the last 20 days of snow cover. Over the mountains, 0.13×104 MJ m2 year−1 is needed to melt snow in the northern and western Tien Shan where maximum snow accumulation occurred. The volume of air cooled 10 °C by snowmelt amounted to 4.4×106 km3 year−1 over the Tien Shan mountains and 3×106 km3 year−1 over the Japanese Islands. The most significant impact of snowmelt on air temperature was observed at an elevation of 2500 m in the western and northern Tien Shan. Air that was cooled 10 °C could reach an elevation of 2.1 km day−1. Over the Japanese Islands, energy losses from snowmelt amounted to 0.26×1014 MJ year−1 and the maximum occurred over Honshu Island. The heat loss from snowmelt in the Tien Shan mountains and Japanese Islands amounted to about 2/3 of heat loss in the Eurasian continental plains. 相似文献

We examine the evolutionary status of luminous, star-forming galaxies in intermediate-redshift clusters by considering their star formation rates (SFRs) and the chemical and ionization properties of their interstellar emitting gas. Our sample consists of 17 massive, star-forming, mostly disc galaxies with MB ≲−20 , in clusters with redshifts in the range 0.31 ≲ z ≲ 0.59 , with a median of 〈 z 〉= 0.42 . We compare these galaxies with the identically selected and analysed intermediate-redshift field sample of Mouhcine et al., and with local galaxies from the Nearby Field Galaxy Survey of Jansen et al.
From our optical spectra, we measure the equivalent widths of [O ii ]λ3727, Hβ and [O iii ]λ5007 emission lines to determine diagnostic line ratios, oxygen abundances and extinction-corrected SFRs. The star-forming galaxies in intermediate-redshift clusters display emission-line equivalent widths which are, on average, significantly smaller than measured for field galaxies at comparable redshifts. However, a contrasting fraction of our cluster galaxies have equivalent widths similar to the highest observed in the field. This tentatively suggests a bimodality in the SFRs per unit luminosity for galaxies in distant clusters. We find no evidence for further bimodalities, or differences between our cluster and field samples, when examining additional diagnostics and the oxygen abundances of our galaxies. This maybe because no such differences exist, perhaps because the cluster galaxies which still display signs of star formation have recently arrived from the field. In order to examine this topic with more certainty, and to further investigate the way in which any disparity varies as a function of cluster properties, larger spectroscopic samples are needed. 相似文献

Equilibrium pressure–temperature (P–T) conditions were estimated for kyanite‐bearing eclogite from Nové Dvory, Czech Republic, by using garnet–clinopyroxene thermometry and garnet–clinopyroxene–kyanite–coesite (or quartz) barometry. The estimated P–T conditions are 1050–1150 °C, 4.5–4.9 GPa, which are mostly the same as previously estimated values for garnet peridotite from Nové Dvory (~1100–1250 °C, 5–6 GPa). Such very high‐P conditions, which correspond to about 150‐km depth, have been obtained for some garnet peridotites in the Gföhl Unit of the Bohemian Massif, but pressure conditions of eclogites associated with the garnet peridotites have not been so well constrained. This is the first substantial finding of eclogite that gives such very high‐P conditions in the Gföhl Unit of the Bohemian Massif. The Gföhl Unit mainly consists of felsic granulite or migmatitic gneiss, but these rock types do not display high‐P (>2.5 GPa) evidence. It is unclear whether both the peridotite body and surrounding felsic rocks in the Gföhl Unit were buried to very deep levels, but at least some garnet peridotites and associated eclogites in the Gföhl Unit have ascended from about 150‐km depth. 相似文献

Abstract— Small particles 200 μm in diameter from the hydrous carbonaceous chondrites Orgueil CI, Murchison CM2, and Tagish Lake were experimentally heated for short durations at subsolidus temperatures under controlled ambient pressures in order to examine the bulk mineralogical changes of hydrous micrometeorites during atmospheric entry. The three primitive meteorites consist mainly of various phyllosilicates and carbonates that are subject to decomposition at low temperatures, and thus the brief heating up to 1000 °C drastically changed the mineralogy. Changes included shrinkage of interlayer spacing of saponite due to loss of molecular water at 400–600 °C, serpentine and saponite decomposition to amorphous phases at 600 and 700 °C, respectively, decomposition of Mg‐Fe carbonate at 600 °C, recrystallization of secondary olivine and Fe oxide or metal at 700–800 °C, and recrystallization of secondary low‐Ca pyroxene at 800 °C. The ambient atmospheric pressures controlled species of secondary Fe phase: taenite at pressures lower than 10?2 torr, magnesiowüstite from 10?3 to 10?1 torr, and magnetite from 10?2 to 1 torr. The abundance of secondary low‐Ca pyroxene increases in the order of Murchison, Orgueil, and Tagish Lake, and the order corresponds to saponite abundance in samples prior to heating. Mineralogy of the three unmelted micrometeorites F96CI024, kw740052, and kw740054 were investigated in detail in order to estimate heating conditions. The results showed that they might have come from different parental objects, carbonaterich Tagish Lake type, carbonate‐poor Tagish Lake or CI type, and CM type, respectively, and experienced different peak temperatures, 600, 700, and 800?900 °C, respectively, at 60–80 km altitude upon atmospheric entry. 相似文献

Abstract— We examined an improved system for extraction of carbon from meteorites, using a vacuum‐tight RF melting method. Meteorite samples mixed with an iron combustion accelerator, including a specific amount of carbon (0.052%), were combusted in a RF furnace (LECO HF‐10). 14CO2 extracted from the meteorite was diluted with a known amount of nearly 14C‐free CO2, evolved from the iron accelerator on combustion. The 14C activities of the recently fallen Holbrook (L6) and Mt. Tazerzait (L5) meteorites were measured by this method. The mean value was 56.5 ± 3.0 dpm/kg, which is similar to the values reported for recently fallen L6 chondrites. Furthermore, terrestrial ages were measured for four Antarctic meteorites: 1.8 ± 0.5 kyr for Yamato (Y‐) 75097 (L6), 1.8 ± 0.5 kyr for Y‐75108 (L6), and 0.1 ± 0.1 kyr for Y‐74192 (H5). For Y‐74190 (L6), an apparent age of 0.8 ± 0.5 kyr was calculated. After consideration of the shielding effect by using 22Ne/21Ne values, we obtained about 1.8 kyr for the terrestrial age of this chondrite. The five samples Y‐74190, Y‐75097, and Y‐75108, together with Y‐75102 (L6) and Y‐75271 (L6), have been reported to be paired and fragments of an L‐chondrite shower (Honda 1981; Takaoka 1987). The result of this work and literature data for the latter two samples confirmed that they are paired. More discussion and experimental work are needed for other recently fallen meteorites, both for L and H chondrites, and a correction for the shielding effect should be done to determine a more reliable terrestrial age. 相似文献
