At the confluence of four regions of different magnetic connectivity lies a distinct topological candidate for coronal heating, namely the magnetic separator. In this study, a method for tracing separator curves is developed and the statistical properties of separators in coronal fields are subsequently explored by analysing a model field with an exponential source distribution, similar to that studied by Schrijver and Title (2002). Magnetic fields based on data from an observed sequence of MDI magnetograms are also considered as a case study. The picture that emerges is one in which there are many more magnetic separators than previously thought, since many separators arise from each null point. For an exponential source distribution, an average of 10.1±0.13 separators per null are found, of which 1.04±0.04 multiply link pairs of nulls (i.e., there is more than one separator linking such pairs of nulls). For the observed sequence of magnetograms, these figures are 7.63±0.2 and 0.99± 0.059, respectively. The results obtained here show that separators have a tendency to group together into trunks about a null. In the case of prone nulls, these trunks lie either normal to the photospheric surface or on it. It is also established that pairs of coronal nulls are frequently interconnected, suggesting that they may have been created by purely coronal bifurcations. 相似文献

Summary. Detailed palaeomagnetic investigations of 17 cores of Holocene lake sediments from four lakes in Poland show a pattern of declination variations similar to those found in Lake Windermere, England and in addition a well defined pattern of inclination variations. A total of nine inclination swings are observed compared to five declination swings and their phase relationships are such that both sets of swings cannot be periodic. Exact dating of the palaeomagnetic record is not possible as radiocarbon ages are over 1000 yr older than those deduced from palynological studies. Thermomagnetic and X-ray studies on magnetic concentrates confirm the results of studies of remanence cooling, IRM acquisition and coercivity experiments which are consistent with fine grained magnetite as the main magnetic mineral in the sediments. 相似文献

The crustal and upper mantle structure of the northwestern North Island of New Zealand is derived from the results of a seismic refraction experiment; shots were fired at the ends and middle of a 575 km-long line extending from Lake Taupo to Cape Reinga. The principal finding from the experiment is that the crust is 25 ± 2 km thick, and is underlain by what is interpreted to be an upper mantle of seismic velocity 7.6 ± 0.1 km s−1 , that increases to 7.9 km s−1 at a depth of about 45 km. Crustal seismic velocities vary between 5.3 and 6.36 km s−1 with an average value of 6.04 km s−1 . There are close geophysical and geological similarities between the north-western North Island of New Zealand and the Basin and Range province of the western United States. In particular, the conditions of low upper-mantle seismic velocities, thin crust with respect to surface elevation, and high heat-flow (70–100 mW m−2 ) observed in these two areas can be ascribed to their respective positions behind an active convergent margin for about the past 20 Myr. 相似文献

Bipolar active regions (ARs) are thought to be formed by twisted flux tubes, as the presence of such twist is theoretically
required for a cohesive rise through the whole convective zone. We use longitudinal magnetograms to demonstrate that a clear
signature of a global magnetic twist is present, particularly, during the emergence phase when the AR is forming in a much
weaker pre-existing magnetic field environment. The twist is characterised by the presence of elongated polarities, called
“magnetic tongues”, which originate from the azimuthal magnetic field component. The tongues first extend in size before retracting
when the maximum magnetic flux is reached. This implies an apparent rotation of the magnetic bipole. Using a simple half-torus
model of an emerging twisted flux tube having a uniform twist profile, we derive how the direction of the polarity inversion
line and the elongation of the tongues depend on the global twist in the flux rope. Using a sample of 40 ARs, we verify that
the helicity sign, determined from the magnetic polarity distribution pattern, is consistent with the sign derived from the
photospheric helicity flux computed from magnetogram time series, as well as from other proxies such as sheared coronal loops,
sigmoids, flare ribbons and/or the associated magnetic cloud observed in situ at 1 AU. The evolution of the tongues observed in emerging ARs is also closely similar to the evolution found in recent MHD
numerical simulations. We also found that the elongation of the tongue formed by the leading magnetic polarity is significantly
larger than that of the following polarity. This newly discovered asymmetry is consistent with an asymmetric Ω-loop emergence,
trailing the solar rotation, which was proposed earlier to explain other asymmetries in bipolar ARs. 相似文献

Hydro-ecological modelers often use spatial variation of soil information derived from conventional soil surveys in simulation of hydro-ecological processes over watersheds at mesoscale (10–100 km2). Conventional soil surveys are not designed to provide the same level of spatial detail as terrain and vegetation inputs derived from digital terrain analysis and remote sensing techniques. Soil property layers derived from conventional soil surveys are often incompatible with detailed terrain and remotely sensed data due to their difference in scales. The objective of this research is to examine the effect of scale incompatibility between soil information and the detailed digital terrain data and remotely sensed information by comparing simulations of watershed processes based on the conventional soil map and those simulations based on detailed soil information across different simulation scales. The detailed soil spatial information was derived using a GIS (geographical information system), expert knowledge, and fuzzy logic based predictive mapping approach (Soil Land Inference Model, SoLIM). The Regional Hydro-Ecological Simulation System (RHESSys) is used to simulate two watershed processes: net photosynthesis and stream flow. The difference between simulation based on the conventional soil map and that based on the detailed predictive soil map at a given simulation scale is perceived to be the effect of scale incompatibility between conventional soil data and the rest of the (more detailed) data layers at that scale. Two modeling approaches were taken in this study: the lumped parameter approach and the distributed parameter approach. The results over two small watersheds indicate that the effect does not necessarily always increase or decrease as the simulation scale becomes finer or coarser. For a given watershed there seems to be a fixed scale at which the effect is consistently low for the simulated processes with both the lumped parameter approach and the distributed parameter approach. 相似文献

Sediment Yield Index (SYI) model and results of morphometric analysis have been used to prioritize watersheds and to locate
sites for checkdam positioning in Tarafeni watershed in Midnapur district. West Bengal. Various thematic maps such as land
use/land cover, slope, drainage, soil etc. were prepared from 1RS ID LISS III digital data, SOI toposheets of 1:50,000 scale
and other reference maps. Morphometric parameters such as bifurcation ratio (Rb). drainage density (Dd), texture ratio (T), length of overland flow (Lo), stream frequency (Fu), compactness coefficient (Cc), circularity ratio (Rc), elongation ratio (Er), shape factor (Bs) and form factor (Rf) were computed. Automated demarcation of prioritization of micro-watersheds was done by using GIS overlaying technique by
assigning weight factors to all the identified features in each thematic map and ranks were assigned to the morphometric parameters.
Five categories of priority viz., very high, high, medium, low and very low, were given to all the watersheds in both the
methods. Sixty-two micro-watersheds using SYI method and twenty-three micro-watersheds using morphometric have been prioritized
as very high priority. Final priority map was prepared by considering the commonly occurred very high-prioritized micro-watersheds
in both SYI model and morphometric analysis. Twenty-four suitable sites were identified for check dam construction in 21 highly
prioritized watersheds. It is proved that integrated study of SYI model and morphometric analysis yield good result in prioritization

The combination of radiance from both clear and cloudy regions of sky within the instrument's field of view (FOV) adds significant uncertainty to retrievals of atmospheric state profiles and cloud microphysical properties from infrared spectroradiometers. In this letter, we use observations of radiance from both the 8-13 and 3-5 /spl mu/m bands to retrieve estimates of the cloud fraction in the instrument's FOV, as well as microphysical cloud properties, from high-spectral-resolution infrared radiometers. Cloud fraction derived from imagers as well as high-time-resolution observations show good agreement and high correlation with our derived cloud fraction values. This is shown for both ground-based and aircraft-based observations. We also demonstrate that the use of the additional information in the 3-5 /spl mu/m band extends the dynamic range and accuracy of microphysical properties that can be retrieved from infrared radiance data. 相似文献
