Phosphorus (P) availability limits productivity in many ecosystems worldwide. As a result, improved understanding of P cycling through soil and plants is much desirable. The use of the oxygen isotopes associated to phosphate can be used to study the cycle of P in terrestrial systems. However, changes with time in the oxygen isotopes associated to available P have not yet been evaluated under field conditions. Here we present the variations in available-P oxygen isotopes, based on resin extractions, in a semi-arid site that included plots in which the amount of rainfall reaching the soil was modified. In addition, the oxygen isotopes in the less dynamic fraction which is extractable by HCl, were also measured. The δ18O of the HCl-extractable phosphate shows no seasonal pattern and corresponds to the average value of the available phosphate of 16.5‰. This value is in the expected range for equilibration with soil water at the prevailing temperatures in the site. The δ18O values of resin-extractable P showed a range of 14.5-19.1‰ (SMOW), and evidence of seasonal variability, as well as variability induced by rainfall manipulation experiments. We present a framework for analyzing the isotopic ratios in soil phosphate and explain the variability as mainly driven by phosphate equilibration with soil water, and by the isotopic effects associated with extracellular mineralization. Additional isotopic effects result from fractionation in uptake, and the input to the soil of phosphate equilibrated in leaves. These results suggest that the δ18O of resin-extractable P is an interesting marker for the rate of biological P transformations in soil systems. 相似文献

We derive S-wave attenuation characteristics, earthquake source parameters and site amplification functions at seismic stations
used for earthquake early warning in the Irpinia–Basilicata region, using non-parametric spectral inversion of seismograms
from 49 local events with M
L = 1.5–3.1. We obtain relatively low Q values (Q
0 = 28 at a frequency of 1 Hz) in conjunction with a strong frequency-dependence (close to linear). The source spectra can
be satisfactorily modeled using the omega-square model, with stress drops ranging between 0.01–2 MPa, and in the narrow magnitude
range available for analysis, the source spectra seem to scale self-similarly. The local magnitude M
L shows a linear correlation with moment magnitude M
W, however with a systematic underestimation by about 0.5-magnitude units. The results obtained in this work provide important
insights into the ground-motion characteristics that are required for appropriate seismic hazard assessment and are of practical
relevance for a suite of applications, such as the calibration of ground-motion prediction equations or the correction for
site amplification in earthquake early warning and rapid calculation of shake-maps for seismic emergency management. 相似文献

A multidisciplinary geological and compositional investigation allowed us to reconstruct the occurrence of flank eruptions
on the lower NE flank of Stromboli volcano since 15 ka. The oldest flank eruption recognised is Roisa, which occurred at ~15 ka
during the Vancori period, and has transitional compositional characteristics between the Vancori and Neostromboli phases.
Roisa was followed by the San Vincenzo eruption that took place at ~12 ka during the early stage of Neostromboli period. The
eruptive fissure of San Vincenzo gave rise to a large scoria cone located below the village of Stromboli, and generated a
lava flow, most of which lies below sea level. Most of the flank eruptions outside the barren Sciara del Fuoco occurred in
a short time, between ~9 and 7 ka during the Neostromboli period, when six eruptive events produced scoria cones, spatter
ramparts and lava flows. The Neostromboli products belong to a potassic series (KS), and cluster in two differently evolved
groups. After an eruptive pause of ~5,000 years, the most recent flank eruption involving the NE sector of the island occurred
during the Recent Stromboli period with the formation of the large, highly K calc-alkaline lava flow field, named San Bartolo.
The trend of eruptive fissures since 15 ka ranges from N30°E to N55°E, and corresponds to the magma intrusions radiating from

In this paper a new kinematic and dynamic model on the Recent and active contractional deformation of the Catania region, eastern Sicily, is discussed. The study area represents one of the most seismically active region of the Mediterranean, located at the intersection between the front of the Sicily collision belt and the seismogenic Siculo-Calabrian Rift-Zone. The analysed contractional tectonics form an active triangle zone that originated from the tectonic inversion of a Lower-Middle Pleistocene extensional basin, which was located at the northern edge of the African foreland. The triangle zone consists of two antithetic ENE–WSW oriented thrust-ramps that show evidence of motion during the Holocene and bound a folded belt that involves alluvial deposits as young as 40 ka. These contractional structures represent the final product of the positive tectonic inversion of extensional features located, in the Hyblean Plateau in SE Sicily, along the flank of the active rift zone. The Late Quaternary motions along the inverted structures was accommodated to the west by a major N–S oriented left-lateral fault zone, which separates the active contractional domains from the adjacent sectors of the African margin. As a whole, the Late Quaternary contractional tectonics of SE Sicily have been related to a NW-verging crustal stacking, related to a Mantle intrusion beneath the Hyblean Plateau that developed as effect of the rift-flank deformation. The crustal lineaments, which compose the new kinematic model, represents potentially active seismogenic sources that might be considered in the frame of the seismotectonic picture of the Catania region. 相似文献

The integration of structural analyses with 40Ar/39Ar dating of fault-related pseudotachylytes provides time constraints for the reconstruction of the Alpine evolution of the central portion of the South Alpine orogenic wedge. In the northern sector of the belt a Variscan basement is stacked southward on the Permian to Mesozoic cover along regional faults (Orobic and Porcile thrusts). Fault zones, slightly postdating a first folding event of Alpine age, experienced a complex evolution through the ductile and brittle deformation regime, showing greenschist facies mylonites overprinted by a penetrative cataclastic deformation. Generation of fault-related pseudotachylyte veins marks the onset of brittle conditions, lasting up to the youngest episodes of fault activity. 40Ar/39Ar dating of the pseudotachylyte matrix of 9 samples give two separated age clusters: Late Cretaceous (80–68 Ma) and latest Palaeocene to Middle Eocene (55–43 Ma). These new data provide evidence that the pre-Adamello evolution of the central Southern Alps was characterised by the superposition of different tectonic events accompanying the exhumation of the deepest part of the belt through the brittle–ductile transition. The oldest pseudotachylyte ages demonstrate that south-verging regional thrusting in the central Southern Alps was already active during the Late Cretaceous, concurrently with the development of a synorogenic foredeep basin where the Upper Cretaceous Lombardian Flysch was deposited. 相似文献
