Past global mean ocean temperature may be reconstructed from measurements of atmospheric noble gas concentrations in ice core bubbles. Assuming conservation of noble gases in the atmosphere-ocean system, the total concentration within the ocean mostly depends on solubility which itself is temperature dependent. Therefore, the colder the ocean, the more gas can be dissolved and the less remains in the atmosphere. Here, the characteristics of this novel paleoclimatic proxy are explored by implementing krypton, xenon, argon, and N2 into a reduced-complexity climate model. The relationship between noble gas concentrations and global mean ocean temperature is investigated and their sensitivities to changes in ocean volume, ocean salinity, sea-level pressure and geothermal heat flux are quantified. We conclude that atmospheric noble gas concentrations are suitable proxies of global mean ocean temperature. Changes in ocean volume need to be considered when reconstructing ocean temperatures from noble gases. Calibration curves are provided to translate ice-core measurements of krypton, xenon, and argon into a global mean ocean temperature change. Simulated noble gas-to-nitrogen ratios for the last glacial maximum are δKratm = ?1.10‰, δXeatm = ?3.25‰, and δAratm = ?0.29‰. The uncertainty of the krypton calibration curve due to uncertainties of the ocean saturation concentrations is estimated to be ±0.3 °C. An additional ±0.3 °C uncertainty must be added for the last deglaciation and up to ±0.4 °C for earlier transitions due to age-scale uncertainties in the sea-level reconstructions. Finally, the fingerprint of idealized Dansgaard-Oeschger events in the atmospheric krypton-to-nitrogen ratio is presented. A δKratm change of up to 0.34‰ is simulated for a 2 kyr Dansgaard-Oeschger event, and a change of up to 0.48‰ is simulated for a 4 kyr event.  相似文献

Presented here are high spatial and spectral resolution Chandra X-ray observations of the famous interacting galaxy pair, the Mice, a system similar to, though less evolved than, the well-known Antennae galaxies. Previously unpublished ROSAT High Resolution Imager data of the system are also presented.
Starburst-driven galactic winds outflowing along the minor axis of both galaxies (but particularly the northern one) are observed, and spectral and spatial properties, and energetics are presented. That such a phenomenon can occur in such a rapidly evolving and turbulent system is surprising, and this is the first time that the very beginning – the onset, of starburst-driven hot gaseous outflow in a full-blown disc–disc merger has been seen.
Point-source emission is seen at the galaxy nuclei, and within the interaction-induced tidal tails. Further point-source emission is associated with the galactic bar in the southern system. A comparison of the source X-ray luminosity function and of the diffuse emission properties is made with the Antennae and other galaxies, and evidence of a more rapid evolution of the source population than the diffuse component is found. No evidence for variability is found between the Chandra and previous observations.  相似文献

Analysis of water flow pathways from hillslopes to streams is essential for the optimal protection of water resources as well as for ecohydrological studies. This study addresses runoff generation processes at a hillslope and near‐stream shallow groundwater system in the Black Forest Mountains, southwestern Germany. The changing spatial and temporal flow patterns during differing hydrological situations were examined using a combined hydraulic and hydrochemical approach. Groundwater levels at 10 wells, discharge at a near‐stream saturated area, and several natural tracers (deuterium, dissolved silica, and major anions and cations) were observed at different locations during high and low flows. The importance of the groundwater component during flood formation was clearly demonstrated: its contribution was about 80% during a double peak flood event at the saturated area. In addition, a rapid change of the shallow groundwater levels was observed along two transects of groundwater wells in the floodplain. This led to an enhanced groundwater discharge into the saturated area located at the end of one study transect. The amount of groundwater additionally activated during the event was about 30% of total discharge recorded at the outlet of the saturated area. Two alternative hypotheses are discussed to explain this phenomenon: the establishment of locally confined conditions and the development of a pressure wave (hypothesis A), or the significant change of the three‐dimensional groundwater flow lines that caused a large increase of the groundwater catchment at the saturated area during the investigated event (hypothesis B). Even if the exact flow paths and mechanisms could not be clearly identified, the importance of rapid responding hillslope groundwater was undoubtedly demonstrated by a combination of tracer and hydrometric methods. Late Cretaceous rudist bivalves have been well studied in terms of taxonomy, stratigraphy and sedimentological context, but their palaeobiological aspects are poorly known and important questions remain unanswered such as those relating to reproduction and population dynamics. The analysis of a three‐dimensional high‐resolution dataset allowed a detailed evaluation of the ecology and population dynamics of the rudist Hippuritella vasseuri (Douvillé). Our research demonstrates that significant turnover of generations and a stable packing rate characterizes stable and healthy ecological conditions whereas decreasing packing rate, increasing larval mortality and the arrival of non‐hippuritid organisms characterize an association in decline. H. vasseuri reproduced in a cyclical (annual or biannual) pattern, as shown in vertical projection by five equidistant peaks of larval recruitment density within 60 mm of section. Survival chances of rudist larvae appear to have been unrelated to initial available space for settling but are favoured by subsequent increasing space and a low number of coeval competitors.  相似文献

For two reasons it is important to study the sensitivity of the global climate to changes in the vegetation cover over land. First, in the real world, changes in the vegetation cover may have regional and global implications. Second, in numerical simulations, the sensitivity of the simulated climate may depend on the specific parameterization schemes employed in the model and on the model's large-scale systematic errors. The Max-Planck-Institute's global general circulation model ECHAM4 has been used to study the sensitivity of the local and global climate during a full annual cycle to deforestation and afforestation in the Mediterranean region. The deforestation represents an extreme desertification scenario for this region. The changes in the afforestation experiment are based on the pattern of the vegetation cover 2000 years before present when the climate in the Mediterranean was more humid. The comparison of the deforestation integration to the control shows a slight cooling at the surface and reduced precipitation during the summer as a result of less evapotranspiration of plants and less evaporation from the assumption of eroded soils. There is no significant signal during the winter season due to the stronger influence of the mid-latitude baroclinic disturbances. In general, the results of the afforestation experiment are opposite to those of the deforestation case. A significant response was found in the vicinity of grid points where the land surface characteristics were modified. The response in the Sahara in the afforestation experiment is in agreement with the results from other general circulation model studies.  相似文献

The results are presented from a survey of national legislation and strategies to mitigate climate change covering almost all United Nations member states between 2007 and 2012. This data set is distinguished from the existing literature in its breadth of coverage, its focus on national policies (rather than international pledges), and on the use of objective metrics rather than normative criteria. The focus of the data is limited to national climate legislation and strategies and does not cover subnational or sectoral measures. Climate legislation and strategies are important because they can: enhance incentives for climate mitigation; provide mechanisms for mainstreaming; and provide a focal point for actors. Three broad findings emerge. First, there has been a substantial increase in climate legislation and strategies between 2007 and 2012: 67% of global GHG emissions are now under national climate legislation or strategy compared to 45% in 2007. Second, there are substantial regional effects to the patterns, with most increases in non-Annex I countries, particularly in Asia and Latin America. Third, many more countries have adopted climate strategies than have adopted climate legislation between 2007 and 2012. The article concludes with recommendations for future research.

Policy relevance The increase in climate legislation and strategy is significant. This spread suggests that, at the national level, there is some movement in reshaping climate governance despite the relatively slow pace of global negotiations, although the exact implications of this spread require further research on stringency of actions and their implementation. Asia and Latin America represent the biggest improvements, while OECD countries, which start from a high base, remain relatively stagnant. Implications of regional patterns are further refined by an analysis by emissions, which shows that some areas of low levels of legislation and strategy are also areas of relatively low emissions. A broad trend toward an emphasis on strategies rather than legislation, with the significant exception of China, calls for enhanced research into the practical impact of national non-binding climate strategies versus binding legislation on countries’ actual emissions over time.  相似文献
