Due to the dramatic increase in the global mean surface temperature (GMST) during the twentieth century, the climate science community has endeavored to determine which mechanisms are responsible for global warming. By analyzing a millennium simulation (the period of 1000–1990 ad) of a global climate model and global climate proxy network dataset, we estimate the contribution of solar and greenhouse gas forcings on the increase in GMST during the present warm period (1891–1990 ad). Linear regression analysis reveals that both solar and greenhouse gas forcing considerably explain the increase in global mean temperature during the present warm period, respectively, in the global climate model. Using the global climate proxy network dataset, on the other hand, statistical approach suggests that the contribution of greenhouse gas forcing is slightly larger than that of solar forcing to the increase in global mean temperature during the present warm period. Overall, our result indicates that the solar forcing as well as the anthropogenic greenhouse gas forcing plays an important role to increase the global mean temperature during the present warm period. 相似文献

The impact of marine ecosystem on the tropical climate variability in the Indian Ocean is investigated by performing coupled ocean/biogeochemical model experiments, which are forced by realistic surface winds from 1951 to 2010. Results from a suite of chlorophyll perturbation experiments reveal that the presence of chlorophyll can have significant effects on the characteristics of the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), including its amplitude and skewness, as well as on the mean state. Specifically, chlorophyll increases mean sea surface temperature due to direct biological heating in regions where the mean mixed layer depth is generally shallow. It is also found that the presence of chlorophyll affects the IOD magnitude by two different processes: One is the amplifying effect by the mean chlorophyll, which leads to shoaling of mean thermocline depth, and the other is the damping effect by the interactively varying chlorophyll coupled with the physical model. There is also a biological impact on the skewness of the IOD, resulting in enhanced positive skewness. This skewness change is primarily caused by the phase dependency of the above two contradicting effects involving the asymmetric thermocline feedback and the nonlinear mixed layer heating. 相似文献

We report fossil coral records from the Seychelles comprising individual time slices of 14–20 sclerochronological years between 2 and 6.2 kyr BP to reconstruct changes in the seasonal cycle of western Indian Ocean sea surface temperature (SST) compared to the present (1990–2003). These reconstructions allowed us to link changes in the SST bimodality to orbital changes, which were causing a reorganization of the seasonal insolation pattern. Our results reveal the lowest seasonal SST range in the Mid-Holocene (6.2–5.2 kyr BP) and around 2 kyr BP, while the highest range is observed around 4.6 kyr BP and between 1990 and 2003. The season of maximum temperature shifts from austral spring (September to November) to austral autumn (March to May), following changes in seasonal insolation over the past 6 kyr. However, the changes in SST bimodality do not linearly follow the insolation seasonality. For example, the 5.2 and 6.2 kyr BP corals show only subtle SST differences in austral spring and autumn. We use paleoclimate simulations of a fully coupled atmosphere–ocean general circulation model to compare with proxy data for the Mid-Holocene around 6 kyr BP. The model results show that in the Mid-Holocene the austral winter and spring seasons in the western Indian Ocean were warmer while austral summer was cooler. This is qualitatively consistent with the coral data from 6.2 to 5.2 kyr BP, which shows a similar reduction in the seasonal amplitude compared to the present day. However, the pattern of the seasonal SST cycle in the model appears to follow the changes in insolation more directly than indicated by the corals. Our results highlight the importance of ocean–atmosphere interactions for Indian Ocean SST seasonality throughout the Holocene. In order to understand Holocene climate variability in the countries surrounding the Indian Ocean, we need a much more comprehensive analysis of seasonally resolved archives from the tropical Indian Ocean. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the 2011 Great Tohoku Japan earthquake and tsunami focused a great deal of the world??s attention on the effect of tsunamis on buildings and infrastructure. When a tsunami impacts structures in a coastal community, the structures are often not strong enough to withstand the forces and may collapse. Therefore, to maximize the survival probability, people evacuate to higher ground or move outside the inundation zone. However, this is not always possible because of short warning times for near-field tsunamis. Thus, sheltering-in-place or ??sheltering-near-place?? using vertical evacuation should be considered as an alternative approach to lateral evacuation from a tsunami inundation zone. This paper presents the method and results of a study to develop and demonstrate a methodology that applied genetic optimization to determine optimal tsunami shelter locations with the goal of reducing evacuation time, thereby maximizing the probability of survival for the population in a coastal community. The City of Cannon Beach, Oregon, USA, was used as an illustrative example. Several cases were investigated ranging from a single shelter to multiple shelters with locations of high elevation already in place near the city. The method can provide decision-support for the determination of locations for tsunami vertical evacuation shelters. The optimum location of the shelter(s), which was found to vary depending on the number of shelters considered, can reduce the evacuation time significantly, thereby reducing the number of fatalities and increasing the safety of a community. 相似文献

Experimental studies, performed under oxidized conditions (fO2 > QFM + 2, where QFM is quartz–fayalite–magnetite oxygen buffer), have shown that Rh, Ru, Ir and Os are strongly compatible with Cr spinel, whereas empirical studies of Cr spinels from ultramafic–mafic rocks suggest that the experimental results may overestimate the partition coefficients. We report laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analyses of platinum-group elements (PGE), Au and Re abundances in Cr spinels from the Ambae volcano, Vanuatu (fO2 = QFM + 2.5), the Jimberlana layered intrusion, western Australia, and the Bushveld complex, South Africa (fO2 ~ QFM). The results show that Rh and IPGEs (Iridium-group PGE; Ru, Ir, Os) partition strongly into the Cr spinels that crystallized from the oxidized Ambae lavas whereas most of the Cr spinels from the more reduced Jimberlana layered intrusion and the Bushveld complex contain no detectable PGE, Au or Re, with exception of ~10 ppb of Ir in some Jimberlana Cr spinels. In the Ambae Cr spinels, Rh, Ru and, to lesser extent Os, are positively correlated with Fe3+, Ni and V. The homogeneous distribution of Rh and IPGEs in LA-ICP-MS time-resolved spectra indicates that these elements are in solid solution in Cr spinels. Pt–Fe alloys occur as inclusions within the Ambae Cr spinels, which indicate that the Ambae melt was saturated with Pt.Our results show that partitioning of Rh, Ru and Ir into Cr spinels increases with increasing oxygen fugacity, which suggests that the high concentrations of these elements in the Ambae Cr spinels are due to the high oxygen fugacity of the host magma. Therefore, Cr spinels may play an important role in controlling the concentrations of Rh and IPGEs during fractional crystallization of oxidized ultramafic–mafic magmas and during partial melting of oxidized arc mantle. 相似文献

Ophiolites, the remnants of ancient oceanic lithosphere, have been described from collisional sutures of various ages with only few examples from Archean terranes. Here we report the discovery of a Neoarchean ophiolite suite from the southern margin of the Dharwar Craton in India, tectonically intercalated within a Neoproterozoic suture zone. The metamorphosed and variably dismembered ophiolite suite, exposed around Devanur, comprises altered ultramafic units, websterite, gabbros, mafic dykes, amphibolites, trondhjemites and pegmatites associated with ferruginous metachert. Structural and petrographic studies indicate that the rocks represent a highly sheared and metamorphosed suite emplaced as a thrust sheet. The major and trace element geochemistry of the mafic dykes indicate derivation from basaltic-andesitic magmas with tholeiitic to calc-alkaline characteristics. The rocks display negative Nb anomalies with enrichment of LILE (K, Rb, Ba, Th) and depletion in HFSE (Ti, Nb, Hf, Tb). The tectonic discrimination of these rocks based on various geochemical plots suggests that they were generated in a suprasubduction zone setting. We present new SHRIMP zircon U-Pb data for two trondhjemite samples from this complex, which yield 238U-206Pb ages of 2528 ± 61 and 2545 ± 56 Ma. The Neoarchean age from the trondhjemites obtained in our study is closely comparable to similar ages obtained in recent studies from magmatic zircons in charnockites and orthogneisses in the area. The suprasubduction zone assemblages and arc magmas suggest a Neoarchean ocean closure along the southern margin of the Dharwar Craton. 相似文献

Temporal and spatial variations in phytoplankton in Asan Bay, a temperate estuary under the influence of monsoon, were investigated
over an annual cycle (2004). Phytoplankton blooms started in February (>20 μg chl l−1) and continued until April (>13 μg chl l−1) during the dry season, especially in upstream regions. The percentage contribution of large phytoplankton (micro-sized)
was high (78–95%) during the blooms, and diatoms such as Skeletonema costatum and Thalassiosira spp. were dominant. The precipitation and freshwater discharge from embankments peaked and supplied nutrients into the bay
during the monsoon event, especially in July. Species that favor freshwater, such as Oscillatoria spp. (cyanobacteria), dominated during the monsoon period. The phytoplankton biomass was minimal in this season despite nutrient
concentrations that were relatively sufficient (enriched), and this pattern differed from that in tropical estuaries affected
by monsoon and in temperate estuaries where phytoplankton respond to nutrient inputs during wet seasons. The flushing time
estimated from the salinity was shorter than the doubling time in Asan Bay, which suggests that exports of phytoplankton maximized
by high discharge directly from embankments differentiate this bay from other estuaries in temperate and tropical regions.
This implies that the change in physical properties, especially in the freshwater discharge rates, has mainly been a regulator

National scale evaluation of groundwater chemistry in Korea coastal aquifers: evidences of seawater intrusion 总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1

Pollution of groundwater by seawater intrusion poses a threat to sustainable agriculture in the coastal areas of Korea. Therefore, seawater intrusion monitoring stations were installed in eastern, western, and southern coastal areas and have been operated since 1998. In this study, groundwater chemistry data obtained from the seawater intrusion monitoring stations during the period from 2007 to 2009 were analyzed and evaluated. Groundwater was classified into fresh (<1,500 μS/cm), brackish (1,500–3,000 μS/cm), and saline (>3,000 μS/cm) according to EC levels. Among groundwater samples (n = 233), 56, 7, and 37% were classified as the fresh, brackish, and saline, respectively. The major dissolved components of the brackish and saline groundwaters were enriched compared with those of the fresh groundwater. The enrichment of Na+ and Cl− was especially noticeable due to seawater intrusion. Thus, the brackish and saline groundwaters were classified as Ca–Cl and Na–Cl types, while the fresh groundwater was classified as Na–HCO3 and Ca–HCO3 types. The groundwater included in the Na–Cl types indicated the effects of seawater mixing. Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, SO4 2−, and Br− showed good correlations with Cl− of over r = 0.624. Of these components, the strong correlations of Mg2+, SO4 2−, and Br− with Cl− (r ≥ 0.823) indicated a distinct mixing between fresh groundwater and seawater. The Ca/Cl and HCO3/Cl ratios of the groundwaters gradually decreased and approached those of seawater. The Mg/Cl, Na/Cl, K/Cl, SO4/Cl, and Br/Cl ratios of the groundwaters gradually decreased, and were similar to or lower than those of seawater, indicating that Mg2+, Na+, K+, SO4 2−, and Br−, as well as Cl− in the saline groundwater can be enriched by seawater mixing, while Ca2+ and HCO3 − are mainly released by weathering processes. The influence of seawater intrusion was evaluated using threshold values of Cl− and Br−, which were estimated as 80.5 and 0.54 mg/L, respectively. According to these criteria, 41–50% of the groundwaters were affected by seawater mixing. 相似文献
