This article is about the politics of conservation in postcolonial Southern Africa. It focuses on the process and consequences of redefining the Nile crocodile as an endangered species and explores the linked local and international, commercial and conservationist interests that allowed the animal to re-establish itself in state-protected waterways in colonial and postcolonial contexts. It investigates the effects of the animal’s successful re-accommodation by examining conflicts between crocodiles and the fishing communities sharing space on Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe. Fishermen’s hostile representations of the animal emphasize competition for fish, harassment, fear, loss of assets and loss of life. Their fear of crocodiles is heightened by the animal’s entanglement in local social life, through its association with witchcraft. The article emphasizes the importance of considering both hegemonic and marginalized ideas about animals in the light of the material interactions, relations of power and historical contexts that shape them. Understanding the attitudes and circumstances of the local communities who bear the physical and economic costs of living with dangerous animals is important--it threatens the future of conservation programmes and reveals the potential for significant abuses to accompany the conservation of wildlife in postcolonial contexts. 相似文献

The oxidation and the subsequent dissolution of sulfide minerals within the Copper Cliff tailings area have led to the release
of heavy metals such as Fe, Ni, and Co to the tailings pore water. Dissolved concentrations in excess of 10 g/l Fe and 2.2
g/l Ni have been detected within the shallow pore water of the tailings, with increasing depth these concentrations decrease
to or near analytical detection limits. Geochemical modelling of the pore-water chemistry suggests that pH-buffering reactions
are occurring within the shallow oxidized zones, and that secondary phases are precipitating at or near the underlying hardpan
and transition zones. Mineralogical study of the tailings confirmed the presence of goethite, jarosite, gypsum, native sulfur,
and a vermiculite-type clay mineral. Goethite, jarosite, and native sulfur form alteration rims and pseudo-morphs of the sulfide
minerals. Interstitial cements, composed of goethite, jarosite, and gypsum, locally bind the tailings particles, forming hardpan
layers. Microprobe analyses of the goethite indicate that it contains up to 0.6 weight % Ni, suggesting that the goethite
is a repository for Ni. Other sinks detected for heavy metals include jarosite and a vemiculite-type clay mineral which locally
contains up to 1.6 weight % Ni. To estimate the mass and distribution of heavy metals associated with the secondary phases
within the shallow tailings, a series of chemical extractions was completed. The experimental design permitted four fractions
of the tailings to be evaluated independently. These four fractions consisted of a water-soluble, an acid-leachable, and a
reducible fraction, as well as the whole-rock total. Twenty-five percent of the total mass of heavy metals was removed in
the acid-leaching experiments, and 100% of the same components were removed in the reduction experiments. The data suggest
that precipitation/coprecipitation reactions are providing an effective sink for most of the heavy metals released by sulfide
mineral oxidation. In light of these results, potential decommissioning strategies should be evaluated with the recognition
that changing the geochemical conditions may alter the stability of the secondary phases within the shallow tailings.

The Indo-Pacific Warm Pool (IPWP) is thought to play a key role in the propagation and amplification of climate changes through its influence on the global distribution of heat and water vapour. However, little is known about past changes in the size and position of the IPWP. In this study, we use a total of 48 modern and fossil coral records from the Mentawai Islands (Sumatra, Indonesia) and Muschu/Koil Islands (Papua New Guinea) to reconstruct oscillations in the extent of the IPWP since the mid-Holocene. We show that reliable estimates of mean sea surface temperature (SST) can be obtained from fossil corals by using low-resolution Sr/Ca analysis of a suite of corals to overcome the large uncertainties associated with mean Sr/Ca-SST estimates from individual coral colonies. The coral records indicate that the southeastern and southwestern margins of the IPWP were cooler than at present between 5500 and 4300 years BP (1.2 °C ± 0.3 °C) and were similarly cool before 6800 years BP. This mid-Holocene cooling was punctuated by an abrupt, short-lived shift to mean SSTs that were warmer than at present between 6600 and 6300 years BP (1.3 °C ± 0.3 °C), while similarly warm conditions may have also existed after 4300 years BP. We suggest that mid-Holocene cooling at our study sites was related to contractions of the southeastern and southwestern margins of the IPWP, associated with the more northerly position of the Inter-tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) that accompanied mid-Holocene strengthening of the Asian summer monsoon. Conversely, intervals of abrupt warming appear to correspond with widespread episodes of monsoon weakening and accompanying southward migrations of the ITCZ that caused the IPWP to expand beyond our coral sites. Intervals of a strengthened Asian monsoon and cooling in the southwestern IPWP during the mid-Holocene appear to correspond with a more positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD)-like mean configuration across the tropical Indian Ocean, suggesting that the Asian monsoon–IOD interaction that exists at interannual time scales also persists over centennial to millennial scales. Associated mean changes in the Pacific ENSO modes may have also occurred during the mid-Holocene. The dynamic and inter-connected behaviour of the IPWP with tropical climate systems during the mid-Holocene highlights the fundamental importance of the warm pool region for understanding climate change throughout the tropics and beyond. 相似文献

Changes in oceanic radiocarbon (14C) reservoir ages through the deglaciation and Holocene can provide important information on ocean circulation as Earth's climate warmed. Here, we present reservoir ages for the western tropical Pacific that span the mid-Holocene transition from less to more frequent El Niño events. Reservoir ages were calculated using paired U–Th and conventional 14C dating of eight individual fossil coral samples from Koil and Muschu Islands, northern coastal Papua New Guinea (PNG). AMS 14C and MC-ICPMS U–Th dating of additional samples from six of the fossil corals were used to confirm the TIMS U–Th and conventional 14C ages. The combined results show average reservoir ages of 185±30 14C yr (n=4) for 7220–5850 yr BP compared to 420 14C yr for a modern coral from Muschu Island. From 5850 to 5420 yr BP reservoir ages increase to modern values. The relatively young reservoir ages from 7220 to 5850 yr BP are best explained by greater influx of well-equilibrated sub-tropical water from the southern branch of the South Equatorial Current (SEC). This is consistent with strengthening trade winds (facilitating air–sea exchange) and a more northerly position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone thought to have occurred at this time. The transition to more modern-like reservoir ages from 5850 to 5420 yr BP suggests modern oceanic circulation patterns were established during this interval. The onset of modern El Niño activity around this time would have served to enhance the intrusion of 14C-depleted equatorial waters via the south equatorial branch of the SEC. Overall, the changes in reservoir age presented here for the western tropical Pacific suggest that Holocene changes in the El Niño–Southern Oscillation state of the tropical Pacific resulted in reorganisation of oceanic circulation in this region. 相似文献

A six-member ensemble of 60?km resolution global atmospheric simulations has been performed for studying future climate scenarios of Pacific island nations. The simulations were performed using the CSIRO Conformal Cubic Atmospheric Model (CCAM), driven by bias-corrected sea surface temperatures (SSTs) provided by six Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 3 global climate models (GCMs) from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth Assessment Report for the period 1971–2100. This paper focuses on results for the representation of the current climate in the tropical region, a region where the “cold tongue” problem is apparent in all host GCMs. The SST bias-correction and the fine horizontal resolution employed in the CCAM simulations produce a significant improvement over the host GCMs in the rainfall patterns for the transient seasons March–April–May and September–October–November, and a moderate improvement for December–January–February and June–July–August. CCAM also simulates improved rainfall patterns over the South Pacific Convergence Zone. The performance of other tropical features, such as El Ni?o Southern Oscillation and the Walker circulation, is also evaluated. 相似文献

Summary
Trans-scale relationships are established between fluctuations in the direction of the geostrophic flow over the British Isles
and spatial variations in rainfall over Devon and Cornwall, South West England. The rationale for using such an approach is
to provide the basis for assessing changes to the region’s rainfall climatology that may result from possible future enhanced
greenhouse effect forced alterations to large-scale wind flow patterns. A new method, the concentration factor (CF), that relates rainfall totals to the frequency of the flow, is applied to investigate spatial variations in rainfall totals
at twelve stations in the two counties under eight wind direction groups (N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW). S and SW flow types
are found to produce the highest daily rainfall totals at all locations, with the three easterly groups (NE, E, SE) yielding
higher daily precipitation intensities than the maritime NW group. Inter-annual and seasonal variations in daily wind direction
– rainfall (WD/R) relationships are then assessed at two contrasting sites in Cornwall (St. Mawgan, Culdrose) using 40 years
of data (1957–96). In general, there is a trend over this period toward maritime airflows (S, SW, W, NW) producing higher
daily rainfall totals, with the continental groups (N, NE, E, SE) yielding lower totals relative to their frequency of occurrence.
The trend toward maritime airflows producing higher rainfall totals is in line with recent trends in the North Atlantic Oscillation
(NAO). Notable seasonal variations in WD/R relationships over Cornwall are interpreted in terms of the location’s exposure
to the prevailing wind, sea temperature variations and the orography of the South West Peninsula.

The stream hydrograph is an integration of spatial and temporal variations in water input, storage and transfer processes within a catchment. For glacier basins in particular, inferences concerning catchment‐scale processes have been developed from the varying form and magnitude of the diurnal hydrograph in the proglacial river. To date, however, such classifications of proglacial diurnal hydrographs have developed in a relatively subjective manner. This paper develops an objective approach to the classification of diurnal discharge hydrograph ‘shape’ and ‘magnitude’ using a combination of principal components analysis and cluster analysis applied to proglacial discharge time‐series and to diurnal bulk flow indices. The procedure is applied to discharge time‐series from two different glacier basins and four separate ablation seasons representing a gradient of increasing hydrological perturbation as a result of (i) variable water inputs generated by rainstorm activity and (ii) variable location and response of hydrological stores through a systematic decrease in catchment glacierized area. The media play a vital role in translating new events and experiences into the textual forms that are communicated to the public. As a result, media narratives have become sites of contestation with opposing groups attempting to frame them in a way that suits their political purposes. When a gold mining proposal to be based at Lake Cowal was rejected by the NSW government for ‘environmental reasons’, the reaction of newspapers circulated in townships near the proposed mine site was analysed for the month following the announcement. A pro‐mining regional hegemony dominated the newspaper texts and drew on three powerful myths prevalent in Australian rural society: ‘the rural identity’, ‘the glory of development’, and ‘the duties of democracy’. The pro‐mining groups use these myths to make their interests appear the same as community interests in an effort to silence opposing views and obtain total community support. The manner in which powerful members of the pro‐mining group were permitted to use the newspapers for their own ends brings forth questions of power and objectivity in the media of contemporary society. 相似文献
