Arsenic and its chemical species were determined in transplanted lichens (Parmelia caperata) and tree bark (Platanus hybrida), in order to get a better understanding of their atmospheric cycling and the suitability of these materials for biomonitoring purposes. Various strategies were used (discontinuous and cumulative exposure of transplants) to biomonitor two locations in Portugal, viz. the northern Lisbon area and Sines, both highly industrialised areas.Analytical techniques comprised instrumental nuclear activation analysis (INAA), inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and high performance liquid chromatography-hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HPLC-HGAFS) for determination of total arsenic in solid materials, total arsenic in extracts of solid materials and arsenic species in extracts of solid materials, respectively.Only a fraction (up to 50%) of the extracted arsenic species could be identified and quantified in the transplanted lichens, being mainly inorganic arsenic and some methylated arsenic species. Since in a previous study these methylated arsenic species were not found in aerosols collected in the same area, it is probable that the lichen transplants studied (Parmelia caperata) do not behave as genuine passive biomonitors but are able to actively methylate inorganic arsenic to methylated arsenic species. Furthermore, this lichen-induced methylation occurs with some delay, possibly as a reaction to the transplantation of the lichen itself, and therefore transplanted lichens are only suitable for long-term biomonitoring studies. For tree bark only total arsenic concentration data could be generated since speciation analysis failed due to too low an initial total arsenic concentrations.  相似文献

Transplants of the epiphytic lichen Parmelia sulcata were suspended in nylon bags in a special device allowing a fixed orientation of the lichen towards the wind direction, viz. facing the wind (F orientation) or shielded from the wind by its substrate (T orientation). The F- and T-orientation data were mutually compared and also with reference values (= time zero values of the transplants). The data were analysed via Monte Carlo added target transformation factor analysis (MCATTFA) to get information on possible emission-source profiles and their contributions to total-element levels in transplants, in F- and T-orientations. Both orientations did not differ for Na, Mg, P, Cl, K, Fe, Co, Ni, Ga, Se, Br, Sr, Ba, La, Nd, Sm, Lu and Ta, but showed some time-related differences for Cr and Zn. For the remaining elements the data presents a high variability. Under the conditions of the experiment, F- and T-oriented transplants generally did not result in differences in source profiles reflected, nor in differences in source contributions to element levels in the transplants.  相似文献

Summary Examination of the Doppler SODAR data from Sao Paulo, Brazil, has given valuable information on the coupling between planetary boundary layer (PBL) and the free atmosphere above, which is reported here. In this communication a case study, on the dynamics of the urban boundary layer over the Metropolitan Area of Sao Paulo (MASP), Brazil, is examined for July 27, 1999 when a multiple gravity wave (GW), a low-level jet (LLJ) and a cold front (CF) all occurred in one single day in succession, making use of data from Doppler SODAR, surface meteorological instruments, satellite imageries and model derived values. The experimental findings are compared to provide validations of ground truth with the model-derived profiles based on the mesoscale analysis of Regional Atmospheric Modelling System (RAMS).It is seen that the multiple GW, the LLJ and the CF have different types of nonlinear coupling between the PBL and the free atmosphere. However, there is convincing matching between Doppler SODAR derived features, those of mesoscale analysis from RAMS and satellite view of cloud dynamics. The study provided valuable information on (i) the very nature of these events, (ii) the nonlinear hydrodynamical coupling between the PBL and the free atmosphere above, during such events, and (iii) the possible mechanism of CF influencing the formation of GW and LLJ.  相似文献

Linearized inversion methods such as Gauss‐Newton and multiple re‐weighted least‐squares are iterative processes in which an update in the current model is computed as a function of data misfit and the gradient of data with respect to model parameters. The main advantage of those methods is their ability to refine the model parameters although they have a high computational cost for seismic inversion. In the Gauss‐Newton method a system of equations, corresponding to the sensitivity matrix, is solved in the least‐squares sense at each iteration, while in the multiple re‐weighted least‐squares method many systems are solved using the same sensitivity matrix. The sensitivity matrix arising from these methods is usually not sparse, thus limiting the use of standard preconditioners in the solution of the linearized systems. For reduction of the computational cost of the linearized inversion methods, we propose the use of preconditioners based on a partial orthogonalization of the columns of the sensitivity matrix. The new approach collapses a band of co‐diagonals of the normal equations matrix into the main diagonal, being equivalent to computing the least‐squares solution starting from a partial solution of the linear system. The preconditioning is driven by a bandwidth L which can be interpreted as the distance for which the correlation between model parameters is relevant. To illustrate the benefit of the proposed approach to the reduction of the computational cost of the inversion we apply the multiple re‐weighted least‐squares method to the 2D acoustic seismic waveform inversion problem. We verify the reduction in the number of iterations in the conjugate'gradient algorithm as the bandwidth of the preconditioners increases. This effect reduces the total computational cost of inversion as well.  相似文献

Urbanization can change catchment hydrology, accelerating gully erosion and causing serious damage to urban structures like roads, bridges and buildings. Increased impervious surfaces lead to large, rapid increases in surface runoff in urban catchments during storm events, as well as changes in the upslope contributing area due to rerouting of urban runoff that can exacerbate erosion. Accounting for changes in surface drainage patterns Gama City, Brazil, is used to predict areas prone to accelerate gullying and develop a method of assessing the potential for gully erosion produced by urbanization. The method is based on the analysis and comparison of detailed digital elevation models (DEMs) of the natural condition before urbanization and the topography after urbanization. The study site is located in an area where changes in drainage patterns associated with rapid urbanization in the last 30 years have resulted in severe gullying. Our analysis identifies areas potentially susceptible to gullying and highlights the erosional influence of increased flow concentration caused by urban occupation, a finding that has implications and applications for strategies to prevent gully development in cities or areas undergoing urban expansion. This research aims to understand the difference of major land-cover change results caused in various time periods and to examine the impacts of human-induced factors on land-cover changes along the TransAmazon Highway region. The Landsat Thematic Mapper and Operational Land Imager data from 2011, 2014, and 2017 and our previous land-cover classification results in 1991, 2000, and 2008 were used to examine land-cover dynamics. A classification system consisting of five land-cover classes – primary forest (PF), secondary forest (SF), agropasture (AP), urban area, and water – were chosen. The hierarchical-based classification method was used to generate land-cover classification results, and the post-classification comparison approach was used to produce detailed “from-to” conversions for each detection period. The emphasis was on deforestation of PF, dynamic change of SF and AP, and urbanization over time. The impacts of human-induced factors such as population and economic conditions on urban expansion, AP expansion, and deforestation were examined. This research indicated that selection of a suitable time period was critical for effectively detecting land-cover changes; that is, too long time period (i.e., 9 years) cannot accurately capture some land-cover changes such as the AP and SF in this research. Although deforestation – the conversion from PF to SF and AP – accounted for a large proportion of land-cover changes, the changes between SF and AP became more important than PF conversion, and required a short time period (i.e., 3 years here) for effectively reflecting their dynamics. Human-induced factors play important roles in deforestation, dynamic changes between AP and SF, and urbanization.  相似文献

Required assimilated energy to support observed growth was reconstructed for four common bivalve species (Mya arenaria, Cerastoderma edule, Mytilus edulis and Macoma balthica) from various Northeast Atlantic coastal areas, along the species distributional range. The approach applied was based on the Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory whereby observed growth patterns in the field, in combination with prevailing temperatures, were used to reconstruct the average food intake experienced in the field scaled to the maximum possible. For all species, results suggest food limitation over the range of locations. In general, reconstructed food intake indicated better conditions for C. edule compared to the other species, while M. edulis presented the lowest food conditions in all the areas. Despite the indications for a latitudinal trend in primary production, no clear pattern or relationship between reconstructed food conditions and latitude was observed suggesting that any trend may be overruled by local conditions.  相似文献

The single-beam acoustic ground discrimination system QTC View, Series V, was used in the Bay of Cadiz, Southwest Spain, for the identification and mapping of the bottom acoustic diversity. The acoustic data were obtained through two successive surveys, each conducted with one of the following echo sounder frequencies: 50 kHz and 200 kHz. The performance of each survey frequency for the identification of the sedimentary gradients was analyzed. The surveys were conducted during high tide given that the majority of the surveyed area is shallower than 5 m, although depth may occasionally reach 20 m in specific areas located in a navigation channel. The acoustic data obtained at the two different frequencies were, individually, submitted to manual clustering and a final solution consisting of three acoustic classes was reached for both datasets. However, only the geographical distribution of the acoustic classes obtained with 50 kHz echo sounder frequency was coincident with the spatial distribution of the superficial sediment groups (silty medium sand, very silty fine sand and mud), identified through multivariate analysis of the grain-size data of ground-truth sediment samples. The results obtained with the 200 kHz echo sounder frequency did not match the sedimentary gradients obtained for the area surveyed, not even the separation of muddy and sandy areas.  相似文献

Summary The maximum tensile stress at failure for a dry specimen, as determined by the Boussinesq equation for the diametrical point load test, was found to be in very good agreement with the diametrical point load tensile strength (Is) as defined by ISRM (1985). The force at failure for specimens of different geometry was used to determine the stress distribution along the line of loading. Distinctive tensile stress gradients dominate almost 84 percent of the specimen radius regardless of the size of the specimen. The maximum tensile stress is located away from the centre of the specimen at a distance approximately 76 percent along the specimen radius, measured from the centre. The stress magnitude at the centre of the specimen is small and represents about 13 percent of the maximum tensile stress calculated, which suggests that the initiation of the fracture is not from the specimen centre. At the zone of contact between the specimen and the loading cones there exists great compressive stress in areas where much material destruction occurs under the loading platen cones. The value of this compressive stress varies from specimen to specimen and, for the material used in these experiments (Oolitic limestone), ranges from 5.3 to 7.2 times the dry unconfined compressive strength of the material. According to the ISRM Suggested Method for Point Load Test, Is (50) is approximately 0.8 times the uniaxial tensile strength. The maximum tensile stress revealed by the Boussinesq equation (Bs) was correlated with Is (50) and found to be in the order of 0.9 times the uniaxial tensile strength.  相似文献
