Abstract Bahía Concepción is located in the eastern coast of the Baja California peninsula and it is shaped by northwestern–southeastern normal faults. These are associated with a 12–6 Ma rifting episode, although some have been reactivated since the Pliocene. The most abundant rocks correspond to the arc related Comondú Group, Oligocene to Miocene, which forms a mainly calc‐alkaline volcanic and volcaniclastic sequence. There are less extensive outcrops of sedimentary rocks, lava flows, domes and pyroclastic rocks of Pliocene to Quaternary ages. The Neogene volcanism in the area indicates a shift from a subduction regime to an intraplate volcanism related to continental extension and the opening of an oceanic basin. The Bahía Concepción area contains numerous Mn ore deposits, being the biggest at El Gavilán and Guadalupe. The Mn deposits occur as veins, breccias and stockworks, and are composed by Mn oxides (pyrolusite, coronadite, romanechite), dolomite, quartz and barite. The deposits are hosted in volcanic rocks of the Comondú Group and, locally, in Pliocene sedimentary rocks. Thus, the Mn deposits formed between the Middle Miocene and the Pliocene. The mineralized structures are associated with Miocene northwestern–southeastern fault systems, which are analogous to those associated with the Cu‐Co‐Zn‐Mn deposits of El Boleo. The Bahía Concepción area also bears subaerial and submarine hot springs, which are associated with the same fault systems and host rocks. The submarine and subaerial geothermal manifestations south of the bay are possibly related with recent volcanism. The geothermal manifestations within the bay are intertidal hot springs and shallow submarine diffuse venting areas. Around the submarine vents (5–15 m deep, 87°C), Fe‐oxyhydroxide crusts with pyrite and cinnabar precipitate. In the intertidal vents (62°C), aggregates of opal, calcite, barite and Ba‐rich Mn oxides occur covered by silica‐carbonate stromatolitic sinters. Some 10–30 cm thick crustiform veins formed by chalcedony, calcite and barite are also found close to the vents. The hydrothermal fluids exhibit mixed isotopic compositions between δ18O‐enriched meteoric and local marine water. The precipitation of Ba‐rich Mn oxides around the vent sites could be an active analog for the processes that produced Miocene to Pliocene hydrothermal Mn‐deposits.  相似文献

Uncertainty in the estimation of hydrologic export of solutes has never been fully evaluated at the scale of a small‐watershed ecosystem. We used data from the Gomadansan Experimental Forest, Japan, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, USA, and Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory, USA, to evaluate many sources of uncertainty, including the precision and accuracy of measurements, selection of models, and spatial and temporal variation. Uncertainty in the analysis of stream chemistry samples was generally small but could be large in relative terms for solutes near detection limits, as is common for ammonium and phosphate in forested catchments. Instantaneous flow deviated from the theoretical curve relating height to discharge by up to 10% at Hubbard Brook, but the resulting corrections to the theoretical curve generally amounted to <0.5% of annual flows. Calibrations were limited to low flows; uncertainties at high flows were not evaluated because of the difficulties in performing calibrations during events. However, high flows likely contribute more uncertainty to annual flows because of the greater volume of water that is exported during these events. Uncertainty in catchment area was as much as 5%, based on a comparison of digital elevation maps with ground surveys. Three different interpolation methods are used at the three sites to combine periodic chemistry samples with streamflow to calculate fluxes. The three methods differed by <5% in annual export calculations for calcium, but up to 12% for nitrate exports, when applied to a stream at Hubbard Brook for 1997–2008; nitrate has higher weekly variation at this site. Natural variation was larger than most other sources of uncertainty. Specifically, coefficients of variation across streams or across years, within site, for runoff and weighted annual concentrations of calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, sulphate, chloride, and silicate ranged from 5 to 50% and were even higher for nitrate. Uncertainty analysis can be used to guide efforts to improve confidence in estimated stream fluxes and also to optimize design of monitoring programmes. © 2014 The Authors. An analysis of published and recently collected aeromagnetics in the Naires Strait region shows that short wavelength, moderate amplitude magnitic anomalies are coincident with previously mapped Precambrian Shield rocks under southeast Ellesmere Island. Similar magnetic anomalies are also observed in northwestern Greenland across Nares Strait. On Greenland the characteristic magnetic anomalies persist about 105 km beyond and northeast of the exposed Precambrian outcrops. This suggests that the Greenland Pre-Cambrian Shield structures previously shown as only occuring as far north as Inglefield Land actually extend at least 100 km further north. Correlation of the magnetic anomalies with mapped geological units suggest a 105+−10 km left lateral displacement in the boundary between the Lower Paleozoic and Precambrain terrains across Nares Strait. This, we interpret, is due to the relative motion between Greenland and Ellesmere Island during the evolution of the Labrador Sea and Baffin Bay in the Early to Mid Tertiary.  相似文献

The Mt. Stuart Batholith is a composite pluton of Late Cretaceous age that intrudes the crystalline North Cascades terrane of northwestern Washington. Its paleomagnetic direction (D=10.0°, I=45.5°; α95=4.9°) is markedly different from the direction expected for Cretaceous rocks from northwestern Washington (D=330.5°, I=73.0°), which means that the Mt. Stuart Batholith either has moved relative to the North American interior, or has been tilted through a substantial angle, or both, since it acquired its magnetism. Either tilt or translation are possible, geometrically, but translation is more likely, because: (1) local geology apparently does not support tilt in the required direction; (2) it probably is not possible for a panel of rock the size of the Mt. Stuart Batholith to tilt through the necessary angle (ca. 35°) after its deeper parts have cooled sufficiently to retain remanent magnetization; (3) the sense of paleomagnetic discordance found in the Mt. Stuart Batholith (clockwise-rotation of declination, flattened inclination) is identical to that found in nearly every other allochthonous terrane in the western North American Cordillera, including every other Cretaceous batholith studied except the Sierra Nevada.  相似文献

In creating separate and distinct spaces and forms of socialising for themselves, ‘international’ and ‘local’ university students in central Melbourne are influenced by three key, spatially-linked processes. The first is institutional - it includes the allocation of international students to a certain type of housing which differs from that chosen by local students, and the practice of universities, student clubs and local churches to gather international and local students into separate groupings. The second is locational. It is the process by which international students find themselves living principally in and around the edge of the central city, an entertainment district with rowdy characteristics that these students often find distasteful. Local students, in contrast, locate in the inner suburbs for the most part, at a distance from the city centre hotspot. The third process sees socialising habits that are enacted in and by virtue of the public places in which they occur. This self-enacting socialisation further separates local students from international students. All three processes demonstrate how certain characteristics of the built environment can be invested with particular meanings and become complicit in shaping racialised social interactions.  相似文献

Uptake of anthropogenic CO2 by the oceans is altering seawater chemistry with potentially serious consequences for coral reef ecosystems due to the reduction of seawater pH and aragonite saturation state (Ωarag). The objectives of this long-term study were to investigate the viability of two ecologically important reef-building coral species, massive Porites sp. and Stylophora pistillata, exposed to high pCO2 (or low pH) conditions and to observe possible changes in physiologically related parameters as well as skeletal isotopic composition. Fragments of Porites sp. and S. pistillata were kept for 6-14 months under controlled aquarium conditions characterized by normal and elevated pCO2 conditions, corresponding to pHT values of 8.09, 7.49, and 7.19, respectively. In contrast with shorter, and therefore more transient experiments, the long experimental timescale achieved in this study ensures complete equilibration and steady state with the experimental environment and guarantees that the data provide insights into viable and stably growing corals. During the experiments, all coral fragments survived and added new skeleton, even at seawater Ωarag < 1, implying that the coral skeleton is formed by mechanisms under strong biological control. Measurements of boron (B), carbon (C), and oxygen (O) isotopic composition of skeleton, C isotopic composition of coral tissue and symbiont zooxanthellae, along with physiological data (such as skeletal growth, tissue biomass, zooxanthellae cell density, and chlorophyll concentration) allow for a direct comparison with corals living under normal conditions and sampled simultaneously. Skeletal growth and zooxanthellae density were found to decrease, whereas coral tissue biomass (measured as protein concentration) and zooxanthellae chlorophyll concentrations increased under high pCO2 (low pH) conditions. Both species showed similar trends of δ11B depletion and δ18O enrichment under reduced pH, whereas the δ13C results imply species-specific metabolic response to high pCO2 conditions. The skeletal δ11B values plot above seawater δ11B vs. pH borate fractionation curves calculated using either the theoretically derived αB value of 1.0194 (Kakihana et al. (1977) Bull. Chem. Soc. Jpn.50, 158) or the empirical αB value of 1.0272 (Klochko et al. (2006) EPSL248, 261). However, the effective αB must be greater than 1.0200 in order to yield calculated coral skeletal δ11B values for pH conditions where Ωarag ? 1. The δ11B vs. pH offset from the seawater δ11B vs. pH fractionation curves suggests a change in the ratio of skeletal material laid down during dark and light calcification and/or an internal pH regulation, presumably controlled by ion-transport enzymes. Finally, seawater pH significantly influences skeletal δ13C and δ18O. This must be taken into consideration when reconstructing paleo-environmental conditions from coral skeletons.  相似文献

Outstanding potential field anomalies (gravimetric and magnetic) in the Cameros Basin (N Spain) follow a WNW-ESE trend, parallel to the geological structures resulting from Mesozoic extension and Tertiary basin inversion. The positive Bouguer gravity anomaly (15 mGal) is interpreted as the result of a strong contrast between the density of Tertiary rocks of the foreland basin and the Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks, combined with crustal thickening in the Iberian Chain with respect to the Ebro Basin. The dipolar magnetic anomaly, slightly shifted to the south with respect to the relative maximum of the Bouguer anomaly, can be interpreted as related to volcanic rocks within the basement, which are linked to Triassic rifting as witnessed by outcrops of basalts along the basin margins. An exhaustive analysis of rock properties (density, magnetic susceptibility and remanence) and basin geometry from other sources (seismic reflection profiles) allow to constrain variations in crustal thickness and the location of large-scale basement faults.  相似文献

In ad 1362, a major storm surge drowned wide areas of cultivated medieval marshland along the north-western coast of Germany and turned them into tidal flats. This study presents a new methodological approach for the reconstruction of changing coastal landscapes developed from a study site in the Wadden Sea of North Frisia. Initially, we deciphered long-term as well as event-related short-term geomorphological changes, using a geoscientific standard approach of vibracoring, analyses of sedimentary, geochemical and microfaunal palaeoenvironmental parameters and radiocarbon dating. In a next step, Direct Push (DP)-based Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) and the Hydraulic Profiling Tool (HPT) were applied at vibracore locations to obtain in situ high-resolution stratigraphic data. In a last step, multivariate linear discriminant analysis (LDA) was successfully applied to efficiently identify different sedimentary facies (e.g., fossil marsh or tidal flat deposits) from the CPT and HPT test dataset, to map the facies' lateral distribution, also in comparison to reflection seismic measurements and test their potential to interpolate the borehole and CPT/HPT data. The training dataset acquired for the key site from coring and DP sensing finally allows an automated facies classification of CPT/HPT data obtained elsewhere within the study area. The new methodological approach allowed a detailed reconstruction of the local coastal landscape development in the interplay of natural marsh formation, medieval land reclamation and storm surge-related land losses.  相似文献

Scientific and technical information can increase the ability of policy makers to make strategic decisions. However, climate change policy is often formulated without significant input from science. We examine whether the availability and accessibility of information related to climate change is a major barrier for policy action on climate change adaptation for smallholder farmers. We also investigate whether scientific information related to climate change is available and used in policy making in Central America and Mexico. Our online survey of 105 decision makers indicated that a lack of scientific and technical information hinders policy makers from developing policies to help smallholder farmers adapt to climate change. Specific needs include information on the impacts of climate change on water availability for agriculture and the areas that are or will be prone to flooding, droughts or landslides. Information about the location of the farmers who are most vulnerable to climate change, the projected temperature and precipitation in agricultural areas and the expected impacts of climate change on crop yields or animal productivity, is also needed. Despite high interest in having scientific information guide policy making, many respondents indicated that policy makers rarely use this information in adaptation planning. In addition to ensuring that relevant information is available to inform policy making, technical and scientific information must be published in venues that are readily accessible for policy makers, easy to understand, and written in a format that is policy-relevant. It is also critical that scientific articles provide specific recommendations for achieving desired policy outcomes.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Es wird ein photochemisches UV-Meßverfahren angegeben, das als Empfänger eine strahlungsempfindliche Härtungsschicht (Photoresist) benutzt. Das Maß der Härtung ist die der eingestrahlten Energie proportionale Schichtdicke, welche interferometrisch bestimmt wird.Das Verfahren ist vor allem als Feldmethode gedacht; Messung und Auswertung lassen sich zeitlich und räumlich trennen. Das Meßzubehör ist leicht, transport-unempfindlich und ohne besondere Kenntnis zu bedienen. Eine zentrale Stelle kann zu beliebigem Zeitpunkt die Messungen zahlreicher Beobachter auswerten.Die praktische Anwendungsmöglichkeit des Resist-Verfahrens wurde in über 300 Feldversuchen im Tiefland und in Höhenlagen geprüft. Unter Verwendung von Filtergläsern, dem Flüssigkeitsfilter nach Bäckström und zweier Interferenzfilter wurden das Gesamt-UV, das UV-A und das UV-B getrennt gemessen.Dem Resist-Verfahren sind wie jeder integrierenden UV-Meßmethode bestimmte Grenzen gesetzt, bedingt durch den nicht linearen Verlauf der spektralen Empfindlichkeitskurve des Empfängers, und durch die nicht senkrecht abfallenden Transmissionskurven der verwendeten Filter. Dieser Umstand ist bei vergleichenden UV-Intensitätsbestimmungen zu berücksichtigen, da er gewisse Fehlerquellen in sich schließt. Trotz dieser Einschränkung, die speziell für das Gesamt-UV und für das UV-B gilt, nicht dagegen für das UV-A, dürfte sich das feldmäßig anwendbare Resist-Verfahren zur Lösung bestimmter medizinisch-bioklimatologischer UV-Strahlungsprobleme als brauchbar erweisen.
Summary The authors discuss a photo-chemical ultra-violet measuring procedure which uses as receiver a hardening coating (photoresist) sensitive to radiation. The measure of hardening is the thickness of the coating which is proportional to the irradiated energy interferometrically determined.The procedure is mainly intended as a field method; measurement and evaluation can be separated relating to time and place. The measuring accessories are light, insensible to transport and can be worked without special knowledge. A central institute may evaluate the measurements of various observers at any date chosen.The practical application of the resist procedure has been examined in the lowland and in altitudes by more than 300 field measurements. UV total, UV-A und UV-B have been measured separately by means of filter glasses, the Bäckström liquid filter and two interference filters.Limits are set to the resist procedure as to every integrating UV measuring method, caused by the non-linear course of the spectral sensitivity curve of the receiver and by the transmission curves of the filters not vertically falling off. This fact has to be considered for the comparative determinations of UV intensity since it includes certain sources of error. In spite of this restriction which applies especially to UV total and UV-B, but not to UV-A, the resist procedure may prove useful, especially for field measurements, for the solution of certain medical-bioclimatological UV radiation problems.

Résumé On décrit ici une méthode de mesure photochimique de l'ultraviolet. Cette méthode utilise comme récepteur une couche d'insolubilisation (photorésist) sensible au rayonnement. Le degré d'insolubilisation est donné par l'épaisseur de la couche qui est, elle, proportionnelle à l'énergie du rayonnement reçu. Cette épaisseur est ensuite déterminée par interférométrie.Cette méthode est applicable surtout en campagne. En effet, la mesure et son évaluation peuvent être disjointes aussi bien dans le temps que dans l'espace. L'appareil de mesure est léger, robuste et peut être utilisé par un personnel n'ayant pas de connaissances particuliéres. Un poste centralisateur peut mettre en valeur les mesures faites par plusieurs observateurs et cela à un moment choisi librement.Les possibilités d'utilisation du procédé «résist» ont été mises à l'épreuve au cours de plus de 300 essais et cela aussi bien en plaine qu'en montagne. En utilisant des verres filtrants, un filtre à liquide selon Bäckström et deux filtres à interférence, on a pu mesurer séparément l'ultra-violet complet, l'UV-A et l'UV-B.Comme pour chaque méthode de mesure par intégration de l'ultraviolet, le procédé «résist» n'est utilisable que dans certaines limites. Celles-ci sont conditionnées par l'état non linéaire de la courbe de sensibilité spectrale du récepteur et par le fait que les courbes de transmission des filtres utilisés ne sont pas perpendiculaires. Ces phénomènes doivent être pris en considération lors de la détermination comparative de l'intensité des rayons ultra-violets, car ils impliquent certaines sources d'erreurs. Malgré ces restrictions—valables surtout pour l'ultra-violet total et l'UV-B, mans pas pour l'UV-A, le procédé «résist» devrait s'imposer pour la solution de certains problèmes de rayonnement ultra-violet en bioclimatologie médicale.
