The history (45–0 ka BP) of the aquatic vegetation composition of the shallow alpine Lake Luanhaizi from the NE Tibetan Plateau is inferred from aquatic plant macrofossil frequencies and aquatic pollen and algae concentrations in the sediments. C/N (range: 0.3–100), δ13C (range: −28 to −15‰), and n-alkane measurements yielded further information on the quantitative composition of sedimentary organic matter. The inferred primary production of the former lake ecosystem has been examined in respect of the alternative stable state theory of shallow lakes [Scheffer, M., 1989. Alternative stable states in eutrophic, shallow freshwater systems: a minimal model. Hydrobiological Bulletin 23, 73–83]. Switches between clear and turbid water conditions are explained by a colder climate and forest decline in the catchment area of Lake Luanhaizi. The macrofossil-based reconstruction of past water depth and salinity ranges, as well as other organic matter (OM) proxies allowed climatic inferences of the summer monsoon intensity during the late Quaternary. Around 45 ka BP, conditions similar to or even moister than present-day climate occurred. The Lake Luanhaizi record is further evidence against an extensive glaciation of the Tibetan Plateau and its bordering mountain ranges during the Last Glacial Maximum. Highest lake levels and consequently a strong summer monsoon are recorded for the early Holocene period, while gradually decreasing lake levels are reconstructed for the middle and late Holocene.  相似文献

The formation and evolution of galactic nuclei is discussed, mainly from the viewpoint of the dense gaseous and stellar system in the central portions of young galactic nuclei. A review is given on models of galactic nuclei containing one or more black holes and how the standard historic Rees-Spitzer-Stone scenario of isolated nuclei formation has been changed by the cosmological structure formation scenario. The dynamical interaction of two or more black holes with their stellar environment and their merging possibilities is presented. Our VLA and Effelsberg radio polarization studies of the interacting and cluster galaxies (NGC 3627, NGC 4038/39, NGC 4254) show that magnetic fields could help us in understanding galaxy peculiar gas motions and cluster environmental effects. We have produced detailed maps of U and Th isotopes for three cross-sections of an Early Pleistocene equid tooth from the archaeological site of Fuente Nueva-3 (Orce, Andalusia, Spain). This permits us to visualise, for the first time, U migration processes in 3 dimensions. The tooth shows a concentration gradient from the top to the base, indicating the U profile had not equilibrated after >1 Ma. The spatial pattern of 230Th/234U and 234U/238U indicates complex U-mobilisation processes over the last 100 ka, dominated by small-scale redistribution of U. Leaching from the tooth through the pulp cavity started at least 93 ka ago with several later phases in various domains of the dentine and cement. This leaching event could have been triggered by changes in the local hydrological regime associated with periods of increased erosion in the Guadix-Baza basin. The results illustrate the difficulty of dating faunal material from Early Pleistocene sites. They also demonstrate that dental tissues can neither be considered as homogeneous media for U-diffusion, nor behave as closed systems for U-series isotopes because diagenetic alterations seem to trigger U-migration. The results do not support the notion that U-uptake into dental tissues is necessarily of short duration. Nevertheless, rapid laser ablation scanning can be used to identify suitable samples for dating as well as domains within the teeth that may have preserved original isotopic signatures, i.e. domains that have not been affected by recent U-mobilisation process.  相似文献

Kerimasi calciocarbonatite consists principally of calcite together with lesser apatite, magnetite, and monticellite. Calcite hosts fluid and S-bearing Na–K–Ca-carbonate inclusions. Carbonatite melt and fluid inclusions occur in apatite and magnetite, and silicate melt inclusions in magnetite. This study presents statistically significant compositional data for quenched S- and P-bearing, Ca-alkali-rich carbonatite melt inclusions in magnetite and apatite. Magnetite-hosted silicate melts are peralkaline with normative sodium-metasilicate. On the basis of our microthermometric results on apatite-hosted melt inclusions and forsterite–monticellite phase relationships, temperatures of the early stage of magma evolution are estimated to be 900–1,000°C. At this time three immiscible liquid phases coexisted: (1) a Ca-rich, P-, S- and alkali-bearing carbonatite melt, (2) a Mg- and Fe-rich, peralkaline silicate melt, and (3) a C–O–H–S-alkali fluid. During the development of coexisting carbonatite and silicate melts, the Si/Al and Mg/Fe ratio of the silicate melt decreased with contemporaneous increase in alkalis due to olivine fractionation, whereas the alkali content of the carbonatite melt increased with concomitant decrease in CaO resulting from calcite fractionation. Overall the peralkalinity of the bulk composition of the immiscible melts increased, resulting in a decrease in the size of the miscibility gap in the pseudoquaternary system studied. Inclusion data indicate the formation of a carbonatite magma that is extremely enriched in alkalis with a composition similar to that of Oldoinyo Lengai natrocarbonatite. In contrast to the bulk compositions of calciocarbonatite rocks, the melt inclusions investigated contain significant amount of alkalis (Na2O + K2O) that is at least 5–10 wt%. The compositions of carbonatite melt inclusions are considered as being better representatives of parental magma composition than those of any bulk rock.  相似文献

Through their consumption behavior, households are responsible for 72% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, they are key actors in reaching the 1.5 °C goal under the Paris Agreement. However, the possible contribution and position of households in climate policies is neither well understood, nor do households receive sufficiently high priority in current climate policy strategies. This paper investigates how behavioral change can achieve a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in European high-income countries. It uses theoretical thinking and some core results from the HOPE research project, which investigated household preferences for reducing emissions in four European cities in France, Germany, Norway and Sweden. The paper makes five major points: First, car and plane mobility, meat and dairy consumption, as well as heating are the most dominant components of household footprints. Second, household living situations (demographics, size of home) greatly influence the household potential to reduce their footprint, even more than country or city location. Third, household decisions can be sequential and temporally dynamic, shifting through different phases such as childhood, adulthood, and illness. Fourth, short term voluntary efforts will not be sufficient by themselves to reach the drastic reductions needed to achieve the 1.5 °C goal; instead, households need a regulatory framework supporting their behavioral changes. Fifth, there is a mismatch between the roles and responsibilities conveyed by current climate policies and household perceptions of responsibility. We then conclude with further recommendations for research and policy.  相似文献

We consider the effect of toroidal magnetic fields on hydrodynamically stable Taylor–Couette differential rotation flows. For current-free magnetic fields a non-axisymmetric   m = 1  magnetorotational instability arises when the magnetic Reynolds number exceeds   O (100)  . We then consider how this 'azimuthal magnetorotational instability' (AMRI) is modified if the magnetic field is not current-free, but also has an associated electric current throughout the fluid. This gives rise to current-driven Tayler instabilities (TIs) that exist even without any differential rotation at all. The interaction of the AMRI and the TI is then considered when both electric currents and differential rotation are present simultaneously. The magnetic Prandtl number Pm turns out to be crucial in this case. Large Pm have a destabilizing influence, and lead to a smooth transition between the AMRI and the TI. In contrast, small Pm have a stabilizing influence, with a broad stable zone separating the AMRI and the TI. In this region the differential rotation is acting to stabilize the TIs, with possible astrophysical applications (Ap stars). The growth rates of both the AMRI and the TI are largely independent of Pm , with the TI acting on the time-scale of a single rotation period, and the AMRI slightly slower, but still on the basic rotational time-scale. The azimuthal drift time-scale is ∼20 rotations, and may thus be a (flip-flop) time-scale of stellar activity between the rotation period and the diffusion time.  相似文献

Li, Be, B and δ7Li SIMS analyses of plagioclase phenocrysts from the 1040–1941 Niki dacite lava (Nea Kameni, Santorini, Greece) exhibit varied processes. From their anorthite contents alone, the crystals may be segregated into four main types: type-N shows the normal decline in An during crystallisation (An62–40); type-O has only oscillatory zoning accompanied by resorption surfaces (An58–39); type-C is complex with high-An cores (subtype C1: An64–58, subtype C2: An88–73) and normal rims (An55–42). Type-A plagioclase with high An content (An92–82) is found within mafic enclaves. On the basis of their Li concentrations, type-O crystals may be subdivided into subtype O1 with flat Li concentration profiles and subtype O2 with decreasing Li concentration from core to rim. The concentrations of Be and B of all four types show a negative correlation with anorthite content (An), but Li concentration profiles differ amongst the different plagioclase types. Types N and O1, and the cores of type-C, are equilibrated in Li concentration. Types O2 and A, and the mantles of type-C display an initial enrichment in Li, probably from volatile influx into the melt. Consistent with the propensity towards equilibrium with the melt, these crystals display dramatic rim-ward declines in Li concentration. All analysed plagioclase crystals, except for the xenocrystic type-A, have nearly the same Li, Be and B concentrations at their rims. These coincide with the composition of plagioclase microlites in the groundmass, thereby affording estimates of plagioclase-melt partitioning for the light elements: K Li = 0.19–0.28, K Be = 0.24–0.38 and K B = 0.007–0.009. δ7Li profiles in type-O2 and type-A phenocrysts manifest an unmistakable inverse relation to Li concentration, with variations of up to ~39 ‰, revealing preferential kinetic diffusion. This may have been driven by Li loss from the melt, most likely through degassing during decompression, perhaps in the course of magma ascent to subsequent eruption. Considering the rapid diffusion of Li in plagioclase, in situ phenocryst analyses may yield useful information about processes leading up to, or even causing, eruptions.  相似文献

Cylinders of synthetic periclase single crystals were annealed at 0.15–0.5 GPa and 900–1200 °C under water-saturated conditions for 45 min to 72 h. Infrared spectra measured on the quenched products show bands at 3,297 and 3,312 cm?1 indicating V OH ? centers (OH-defect stretching vibrations in a half-compensated cation vacancy) in the MgO structure as a result of proton diffusion into the crystal. For completely equilibrated specimens, the OH-defect concentration, expressed as H2O equivalent, was calculated to 3.5 wt ppm H2O at 1,200 °C and 0.5 GPa based on the calibration method of Libowitzky and Rossmann (Am Min 82:1111–1115, 1997). This value was confirmed via Raman spectroscopy, which shows OH-defect-related bands at identical wavenumbers and yields an H2O equivalent concentration of about 9 wt ppm using the quantification scheme of Thomas et al. (Am Min 93:1550–1557, 2008), revised by Mrosko et al. (Am Mineral 96:1748–1759, 2011). Results of both independent methods give an overall OH-defect concentration range of 3.5–9 (+4.5/?2.6) ppm H2O. Proton diffusion follows an Arrhenius law with an activation energy E a = 280 ± 64 kJ mol?1 and the logarithm of the pre-exponential factor logDo (m2 s?1) = ?2.4 ± 1.9. IR spectra taken close to the rims of MgO crystals that were exposed to water-saturated conditions at 1,200 °C and 0.5 GPa for 24 h show an additional band at 3,697 cm?1, which is related to brucite precipitates. This may be explained by diffusion of molecular water into the periclase, and its reaction with the host crystal during quenching. Diffusion of molecular water may be described by logDH2O (m2 s?1) = ?14.1 ± 0.4 (2σ) at 1,200 °C and 0.5 GPa, which is ~ 2 orders of magnitude slower than proton diffusion at identical P-T conditions.  相似文献
