The vibrational frequencies of a series of splatquenched, olivine glasses spanning the compositional range from Mg2SiO4 to Mn2SiO4 have been determined using both infrared and Raman spectroscopies. The spectra of all glasses show evidence of tetrahedral coordination of silicon (possibly with some slight distortions), and largely octahedral coordination of magnesium. Spectra of Mn-rich glasses indicate that there is some manganese in 4 or 5-fold coordination. The frequencies observed for the fundamental vibrations of the silica tetrahedra are similar to those previously observed for SiO4 groups in both crystalline and glassy orthosilicates. Additionally, there is evidence for a small amount of silicate polymerization in all glasses characterized: vibrations attributable to Si2O7 groups are visible in both infrared and Raman spectra.  相似文献

It is demonstrated here that the economic evaluation of such an intangible residental environmental amenity as a view is both possible and useful. Understanding the impact of faults on fluid flow in the subsurface is important for the extraction of oil, gas and groundwater as well as the geological storage of waste products. We address two problems present in current industry-standard workflows for fault seal analysis that may lead to fault rocks not being represented adequately in computational fluid flow models. Firstly, fluid flow properties of fault rocks are often measured only for small-scale faults with throws not exceeding a few centimetres. Large seismic-scale faults (throws >20 m) are likely to act as baffles or conduits to flow but they are seldom recovered from subsurface cores and consequently fault rock data for them is sparse. Secondly, experimental two-phase fluid flow data is lacking for fault rocks and, consequently, uncertainties exist when modelling flow across faults in the presence of two or more immiscible phases. We present a data set encompassing both single- and two-phase fluid flow properties of fault and host rocks from the 90-Fathom fault and its damage zone at Cullercoats Bay, NE England. Measurements were made on low-throw single and zones of deformation bands as well as on slip-surface cataclasites present along the ~120 m throw main fault. Samples were analysed using SEM and X-ray tomography prior to petrophysical measurements. We show that single deformation bands, deformation band zones and slip-surface cataclasites exhibit dissimilar single- and two-phase fluid flow properties. This is due to grain-size reduction being more pronounced in slip-surface cataclasites and changes in microstructure being fault-parallel for deformation bands but mostly fault-perpendicular for slip-surface cataclasites. A trend of fault rocks with low absolute permeabilities exhibiting lower relative permeabilities than more permeable rocks at the same capillary pressure is evident.  相似文献

This study aimed at analysing the effects of biological and meteorological factors on stemflow generation in a temperate mixed oak (Quercus petraea Liebl.) and beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) stand. A statistical model was developed to predict single‐event individual stemflow volume from trunk circumference and rainfall depth allowing mechanistic stemflow parameters to be deduced from the model, namely stemflow rates (SFrate), storage of water on tree organs (St) and rainfall thresholds for stemflow (RFmin). SFrate and St increased with increasing trunk circumference while RFmin was not significantly influenced by tree size. RFmin and, for a given tree size, St were higher for oak than for beech, and inversely for SFrate. For each species, RFmin was higher for the leaved season than for the leafless period, while the opposite was found for SFrate, and St was not significantly affected by the season. Increasing wind speed during rain increased SFrate, lowered RFmin and did not influence St. In contrast, St and RFmin tended, respectively, to decrease and to increase with increasing values of the ratio between the cumulated potential evaporation during the dry period preceding the rain event and the volume of the preceding rainfall (Eva pADP/Rprevious). Stemflow volume, which results from the combined effects of the previous parameters, was higher for beech than for oak and also higher during the leafless period than during the leaved period; these differences were large for the smallest events but decreased rapidly as rainfall depth increased. In addition, an enhancing and a depressing effect on stemflow volume were shown for the average wind speed during rain and for the ratio Eva pADP/Rprevious, respectively. We present radio observations of the unique, recently formed, planetary nebula (PN) associated with a very long-period OH/IR variable star V1018 Sco that is unequivocally still in its asymptotic giant branch phase. Two regions within the optical nebula are clearly detected in non-thermal radio continuum emission, with radio spectral indices comparable to those seen in colliding-wind Wolf–Rayet binaries. We suggest that these represent shocked interactions between the hot, fast stellar wind and the cold nebular shell that represents the PN's slow wind moving away from the central star. This same interface produces both synchrotron radio continuum and the optical PN emission. The fast wind is neither spherical in geometry nor aligned with any obvious optical or radio axis. We also report the detection of transient H2O maser emission in this nebula.  相似文献
