The edifice of Stromboli volcano gravitationally collapsed several times during its volcanic history (>100 ka–present). The
largest Holocene event occurred during the final stage of the Neostromboli activity (∼13–5 ka), and was accompanied by the
emplacement of phreatomagmatic and lahar deposits, known as the Secche di Lazzaro succession. A stratigraphic and paleomagnetic
study of the Secche di Lazzaro deposits allows the interpretation of the emplacement and the eruptive processes. We identify
three main units within the succession that correspond to changing eruption conditions. The lower unit (UA) consists of accretionary
lapilli-rich, thinly bedded, parallel- to cross-stratified ash deposits, interpreted to indicate the early stages of the eruption
and emplacement of dilute pyroclastic density currents. Upward, the second unit (UB) of the deposit is more massive and the
beds thicker, indicating an increase in the sedimentation rate from pyroclastic density currents. The upper unit (UC) caps
the succession with thick, immediately post-eruptive lahars, which reworked ash deposited on the volcano’s slope. Flow directions
obtained by Anisotropy of Magnetic Susceptibility (AMS) analysis of the basal bed of UA at the type locality suggest a provenance
of pyroclastic currents from the sea. This is interpreted to be related to the initial base-surges associated with water–magma
interaction that occurred immediately after the lateral collapse, which wrapped around the shoulder of the sector collapse
scar. Upward in the stratigraphy (upper beds of UA and UB) paleoflow directions change and show a provenance from the summit
vent, probably related to the multiple collapses of a vertical, pulsatory eruptive column. 相似文献

Streamflow scaling properties: investigating characteristic scales from different statistical approaches 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper studies the links between scaling properties of river flow time series by comparing the results of three techniques applied to an extended data set of 34 French discharge gauging stations. The three approaches used are based on different mathematical tools and hypotheses: (1) shape analysis of flood hydrographs; (2) a multifractal framework through spectral and moment analyses, and (3) flood frequency analysis through the fitting of flood duration frequency curves (QdF). The general aim is to test the hypothesis of scaling invariance of river flow and the shape invariance of the hydrographs, in order to investigate the link between scaling properties and flow dynamics. In particular, the coherence between different approaches widely used in the literature to describe these characteristics is evaluated through the estimation of parameters defining the range of time‐scales on which the scaling properties are valid. The results show that most of these timescale parameters are linked to the flow dynamics and suggest that the approaches applied are interrelated. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

On 28 December 2002, new vents opened on the flanks of Stromboli, just below the summit craters, interrupting the persistent
activity of the volcano with a 7-month-long effusive eruption. We here report on the plagioclase size distribution (PlgSD)
in lava samples collected following the chronology of the 2002–2003 eruption. Data reveal a linear PlgSD similar to that found
in samples of normal Stromboli activity, indicating that the switch from Strombolian explosive to effusive activity is not
associated with changes in texture. Nevertheless, the crystal size distribution slopes and intercepts exhibit slight sinusoidal
temporal variations that are here ascribed to a magma supply mechanism able to induce “resonance” in the crystal size distribution,
with an amplitude that depends on the supply rate. 相似文献

The influence of surface roughness on the dispersion of a passive scalar in a rough wall turbulent boundary layer has been
studied using wind-tunnel experiments. The surface roughness was varied using different sizes of roughness elements, and different
spacings between the elements. Vertical profiles of average concentration were measured at different distances downwind of
the source, and the vertical spread of the plume was computed by fitting a double Gaussian profile to the data. An estimate
of the integral length scale is derived from the turbulence characteristics of the boundary layer and is then used to scale
the measured values of plume spread. This scaling reduces the variability in the data, confirming the validity of the model
for the Lagrangian integral time scale, but does not remove it entirely. The scaled plume spreading shows significant differences
from predictions of theoretical models both in the near and in the far field. In the region immediately downwind of the source
this is due to the influence of the wake of the injector for which we have developed a simple model. In the far field we explain
that the differences are mainly due to the absence of large-scale motions. Finally, further downwind of the source the scaled
values of plume spread fall into two distinct groups. It is suggested that the difference between the two groups may be related
to the lack of dynamical similarity between the boundary-layer flows for varying surface roughness or to biased estimates

The turbulent exchange of momentum between a two-dimensional cavity and the overlying boundary layer has been studied experimentally,
using hot-wire anemometry and particle image velocimetry (PIV). Conditions within the boundary layer were varied by changing
the width of the canyons upstream of the test canyon, whilst maintaining the square geometry of the test canyon. The results
show that turbulent transfer is due to the coupling between the instabilities generated in the shear layer above the canyons
and the turbulent structures in the oncoming boundary layer. As a result, there is no single, unique velocity scale that correctly
characterizes all the processes involved in the turbulent exchange of momentum across the boundary layer. Similarly, there
is no single velocity scale that can characterize the different properties of the turbulent flow within the canyon, which
depends strongly on the way in which turbulence from the outer flow is entrained into the cavity and carried round by the
mean flow. The results from this study will be useful in developing simple parametrizations for momentum exchange in the urban
canopy, in situations where the street geometry consists principally of relatively long, uniform streets arranged in grid-like
patterns; they are unlikely to be applicable to sparse geometries composed of isolated three-dimensional obstacles. 相似文献

An ocean analysis, assimilating both surface and subsurface hydrographic temperature data into a global ocean model, has been produced for the period 1958–2000, and used to study the time and space variations of North Atlantic upper ocean heat content (HC). Observational evidence is presented for interannual-to-decadal variability of upper ocean thermal fluctuations in the North Atlantic related to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) variability over the last 40 years. The assimilation scheme used in the ocean analysis is a univariate, variational optimum interpolation of temperature. The first guess is produced by an eddy permitting global ocean general circulation forced by atmospheric reanalysis from the National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). The validation of the ocean analysis has been done through the comparison with objectively analyzed observations and independent data sets. The method is able to compensate for the model systematic error to reproduce a realistic vertical thermal structure of the region and to improve consistently the model estimation of the time variability of the upper ocean temperature. Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis shows that an important mode of variability of the wintertime upper ocean climate over the North Atlantic during the period of study is characterized by a tripole pattern both for SST and upper ocean HC. A similar mode is found for summer HC anomalies but not for summer SST. Over the whole period, HC variations in the subtropics show a general warming trend while the tropical and north eastern part of the basin have an opposite cooling tendency. Superimposed on this linear trend, the HC variability explained by the first EOF both in winter and summer conditions reveals quasi-decadal oscillations correlated with changes in the NAO index. On the other hand, there is no evidence of correlation in time between the NAO index and the upper ocean HC averaged over the whole North Atlantic which exhibits a substantial and monotonic warming trend during the last two decades of the analysis period. The maximum correlation is found between the leading principal component of winter HC anomalies and NAO index at 1 year lag with NAO leading. For SST anomalies significant correlation is found only for winter conditions. In contrast, for HC anomalies high correlations are found also in the summer suggesting that the summer HC keeps a memory of winter conditions. 相似文献

We analyze the reliability of the Lagrangian stochastic micromixing method in predicting higher-order statistics of the passive scalar concentration induced by an elevated source (of varying diameter) placed in a turbulent boundary layer. To that purpose we analyze two different modelling approaches by testing their results against the wind-tunnel measurements discussed in Part I (Nironi et al., Boundary-Layer Meteorology, 2015, Vol. 156, 415–446). The first is a probability density function (PDF) micromixing model that simulates the effects of the molecular diffusivity on the concentration fluctuations by taking into account the background particles. The second is a new model, named VP\(\varGamma \), conceived in order to minimize the computational costs. This is based on the volumetric particle approach providing estimates of the first two concentration moments with no need for the simulation of the background particles. In this second approach, higher-order moments are computed based on the estimates of these two moments and under the assumption that the concentration PDF is a Gamma distribution. The comparisons concern the spatial distribution of the first four moments of the concentration and the evolution of the PDF along the plume centreline. The novelty of this work is twofold: (i) we perform a systematic comparison of the results of micro-mixing Lagrangian models against experiments providing profiles of the first four moments of the concentration within an inhomogeneous and anisotropic turbulent flow, and (ii) we show the reliability of the VP\(\varGamma \) model as an operational tool for the prediction of the PDF of the concentration. 相似文献

Geomechanical models are often used to predict the impact on land surface of fluid withdrawal from deep reservoirs, as well as investigating measures for mitigation. The ability to accurately simulate surface displacements, however, is often impaired by limited information on the geomechanical parameters characterizing the geological formations of interest. In this study, we employ an ensemble smoother, a data assimilation algorithm, to provide improved estimates of reservoir parameters through assimilation of measurements of both horizontal and vertical surface displacement into geomechanical model results. The method leverages the demonstrated potential of remote sensing techniques developed in the last decade to provide accurate displacement data for large areas of the land surface. For evaluation purposes, the methodology is applied to the case of a disk‐shaped reservoir embedded in a homogeneous, isotropic, and linearly elastic half space, subject to a uniform change in fluid pressure. Multiple sources of uncertainty are investigated, including the radius, R, the thickness, h, and the depth, c, of the reservoir; the pore pressure change, Δp; porous medium's vertical uniaxial compressibility, cM, and Poisson's ratio, ν, and the ratio, s, between the compressibilities of the medium during loading and unloading cycles. Results from all simulations show that the ensemble smoother has the capability to effectively reduce the uncertainty associated with those parameters to which the variability and the spatial distribution of land surface displacements are most sensitive, namely, R, c, cM, and s. These analyses demonstrate that the estimation of these parameters values depends on the number of measurements assimilated and the error assigned to the measurement values.
