A possible dependence of tectonic strength on the age of the crust in Asia   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
In Asia, the intensity and style of active tectonics appears to depend on the age of the last orogenic activity. The shields have remained essentially undeformed during the India-Eurasian collision, but Paleozoic and Mesozoic orogenic belts apparently have been reactivated by this collision, with a suggestion of greater reactivation and more diffuse deformation of the younger belts. If the greater observed heat flow in regions of more recent orogenic activity reflects, at least in part, a greater heat flow from the mantle beneath the younger belts, then the temperatures in the mantle beneath the younger belts should be higher than beneath older belts and shields. Because of the strong dependence on temperature of the creep strength of minerals, particularly of olivine, the crust and mantle beneath the hotter, younger belts should be much weaker than those beneath older belts. This difference in temperature, and consequent difference in strength, may be the cause of the greater reactivation of younger belts.  相似文献

Geography at elementary and middle schools in Louisiana, USA., remains a social studies strand along with civics, economics, and history, with no state-required geography course at any level. But because schools may require more geography than the state standard, this research examines the extent to which K–12 students are exposed to geography in Louisiana, using an electronic survey and an interview with state department of education officials. Results suggest that geography remains underemphasized, but the 2011 implementation of new social studies standards, the Advanced Placement Human Geography course, and other initiatives offer promise for more geographically literate Louisiana citizens.  相似文献

We find that the profile changes observed for the UV emission lines L,Civ 1549, and MgIII 2798, in the Seyfert 1 galaxy Fairall 9 occur mainly near the line centre for L andCiv and in the wings for MgIII. The Viking missions to Mars failed to detect any organic material in regolith samples. Since then, several removal mechanisms of organic material have been proposed. Two of these proposed methods are removal due to exposure to plasmas created in dust devils and exposure to UV irradiation. The experiments presented here were performed to identify similarities between the two potential removal mechanisms and to identify any compounds produced from these mechanisms that would have been difficult for the Viking instruments to detect. Five organic compounds, phenanthrene, octadecane, octadecanoic acid, decanophenone and benzoic acid, were exposed to a glow discharge plasma created in simulated martian atmospheres as might be present in dust devils, and to UV irradiation similar to that found at the surface of Mars. Glow discharge exposure was carried out in a chamber with 6.9 mbar pressure of a Mars like gas composed mostly of carbon dioxide. The plasma was characterized using emission spectroscopy and found to contain cations and excited neutral species including carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen. UV irradiation experiments were performed in a Mars chamber which simulates the temperature, pressure, atmospheric composition, and UV fluence rates of equatorial Mars. The non-volatile residues left after each exposure were characterized by mass loss, infrared spectroscopy and high resolution mass spectrometry. Oxidized, higher molecular weight versions of the parent compounds containing carbonyl, hydroxyl and alkenyl functional groups were identified. The presence of these oxidized compounds suggests that searches for organic material in soils on Mars use instrumentation suitable for detection of compounds which contain the above functional groups. Discussions of possible reaction mechanisms are given.  相似文献

For the period September 1978 to December 1982 we have identified 55 solar flare particle events for which our instruments on board the ISEE-3 (ICE) spacecraft detected electrons above 10 MeV. Combining our data with those from the ULEWAT spectrometer (MPI Garching and University of Maryland) electron spectra in the range from 0.1 to 100 MeV were obtained. The observed spectral shapes can be divided into two classes. The spectra of the one class can be fit by a single power law in rigidity over the entire observed range. The spectra of the other class deviate from a power law, instead exhibiting a steepening at low rigidities and a flattening at high rigidities. Events with power-law spectra are associated with impulsive (<1 hr duration) soft X-ray emission, whereas events with hardening spectra are associated with long-duration (<1 hr) soft X-ray emission. The characteristics of long-duration events are consistent with diffusive shock acceleration taking place high in the corona. Electron spectra of short-duration flares are well reproduced by the distribution functions derived from a model assuming simultaneous second-order Fermi acceleration and Coulomb losses operating in closed flare loops.  相似文献

Abstract— For most elements, polymict ureilite EET83309 shows no significant compositional difference from other ureilites, including ordinary (“monomict”) ureilites. Polymict ureilites appear to be mixtures of a wide variety of ordinary ureilites, with little dilution by “foreign” extra-ureilitic materials. Thus, they apparently were mixed (i.e., the ureilites in general formed) on a very small number of parent bodies. In one respect, polymict ureilites do stand out. Along with the only other polymict ureilite that has been analyzed for REE (Nilpena), EET83309 has much higher concentrations of light-middle REE than most ordinary ureilites. Despite these relative enrichments in LREE, polymict ureilites are nearly devoid of basaltic (Al-rich) material. A basaltic component should have formed along with (and presumably above) the ultramafic ureilites, in any closed-system differentiation of an originally chondritic asteroid. This scarcity of complementary basaltic materials may be an important clue to ureilite origins. We suggest that ureilites originated as paracumulates (mushy, cumulate-like, partial melt residues) deep within a primordially-heated asteroid or asteroids. While still largely molten, the asteroid was severely disrupted, and most of its external basaltic portion was permanently blown away, by impact of a large, C-rich projectile. This partially-disruptive impact tended to permeate the paracumulates with C-rich, noble-gas-rich, and 16O-rich magma derived mainly from shock-melting of the projectile. After reaccumulation and cooling, the resultant mixtures of cumulus mafic silicates with essentially “foreign” C-matrix became “monomict” ureilites. Further small impacts produced polymict ureilites as components of a newly-developed, basalt-poor megaregolith. The consistently moderate pyroxene/olivine ratios of the ureilites are as expected for partial melt residues, but not for cumulate (sensu stricto) rocks. The final projectile/target mixing ratio tended to be greatest among the more magnesian and pyroxene-rich portions of the paracumulate, because these portions were lowest in density, and thus concentrated toward the upper surface of the paracumulate layer. As a result, ureilites show correlations among C, Δ17O, and silicate-core mg. This model appears to reconcile many paradoxical aspects of ureilite composition (primitive, near-chondritic, except depleted in basalt, diverse Δ17O) and petrography (igneous, cumulate-like).  相似文献

Archival HST FOS and GHRS data sets have been used to collect ultraviolet evidence for large- and small-scale stellar wind structure in extragalactic Local Group OB stars (i.e. SMC, LMC including R136, M31, M33 and NGC 6822). By comparison with previous studies of Galactic OB stars, wind activity is principally diagnosed in individual spectrograms via the presence of 'narrow absorption components' and saturated 'black' absorption troughs in the resonance line doublets. Their characteristics broadly suggest that these stars share the same physical mechanisms for perturbing the winds as those that act in Galactic stars. Both of these spectral indicators are also used to provide reliable measures of wind terminal velocities. These velocities are directly compared with previously published Galactic values, without reliance on model profile fitting. Relative to Galactic OB stars, the most discrepant terminal velocities (and wind line profiles) result from main-sequence early O-type stars in the SMC.  相似文献

Recent data on the Tully–Fisher relation for spiral galaxies are compatible with the traditional correlation for astrophysical systems, where the angular momentum varies as the square of the mass. Such a correlation is consistent with standard gravitational theory, but is not explained by it. We here show that the noted relation follows from currently popular accounts of extended or higher-dimensional gravitational theory. The latter also predicts that the spins of spirals should decay as the universe expands, which can be tested by extending the Tully–Fisher data to higher redshifts.  相似文献
