A model of two-stream non-radial accretion for binary X-ray pulsars

The general case of non-radial accretion is assumed to occur in real binary systems containing X-ray pulsars. The structure and the stability of the magnetosphere, the interaction between the magnetosphere and accreted matter, as well as evolution of neutron star in close binary system are examined within the framework of the two-stream model of nonradial accretion onto a magnetized neutron star. Observable parameters of X-ray pulsars are explained in terms of the model considered.     

Study of physical properties of spectroscopic binary stars

The main results of a study of a catalogue of physical parameters of 1041 spectroscopic binaries are presented. The distribution of spectroscopic binaries over all main parametersM ₁, a, e, M₁/M₂, P, and certain dependencies between some of them have been found.

1. It appears that among bright (m _v?3 ^m –5 ^m ) stars withM?1M _⊙, about 40% are apparently spectroscopic binaries with comparable masses of components.
2. The majority of spectroscopic binaries with the ratio of the large semiaxis of the orbit to the radius of the primarya/R ₁?20, have eccentricities close to zero. This is probably a consequence of the tidal circularization of orbits of close binaries by viscous friction.
3. The discovery of duplicity of double-line spectroscopic binaries is possible only if the semiamplitude of radial velocityK ₁ is almost 10 times higher than the semiamplitude of the radial velocity of a single-line spectroscopic binary of the same mass.
4. Double-line spectroscopic binaries witha/R _⊙?6(M ₁/M _⊙)^1/3,M ₁≈M ₂?1.5M _⊙ are almost almost absent, and the number of stars witha/R _⊙?6(M ₁/M _⊙)^1/3,M ₁≈1.5M _⊙ is relatively low.
5. The distribution of unevolved SB stars over the large semiaxis may be described by the expression d(N _d/N_t)≈0.2 d loga for 6(M ₁/M _⊙)^1/3?a/R _⊙?100.
6. The intial mass-function for primaries of spectroscopic binaries is the same Salpeter function dN _d≈M ₁ ^?2.35 dM ₁ for 1?M ₁/M _⊙?30.
7. It is possible to explain the observed ratio of the number of single-line spectroscopic binaries to the number of double-line binaries if one assumes that the average initial mass ratio is close to 1 and that the mass of the postmass-exchange remnant of the primary exceeds the theoretical one and/or that half of the angular momentum of the system is lost during mass-exchange.
8. The above-mentioned distributions ofM ₁ anda and assumptions on the mass of remnant and/or momentum loss also allow us to explain the observed shapes of dN/dM, dN/dq, and dN/da distributions after some selection effects are taken into account.

     

On the spectrum of a gaseous nebula of pure hydrogen,I

The emissivity for the two photons decay from the metastable level 2s has been computed in the case of a gaseous nebula of pure hydrogen, with both radiative and collisional excitation of the states.The populations of 2s and 2p levels are deduced from the condition of equilibrium with other levels. Electron temperatures between 10⁴ and 4×10⁴K and electron densities between 10⁴ and 10⁶ cm^–3 have been investigated.For the optically thin case Ly intensity has also been computed.In the case of collisional excitation a much greater efficiency for the two photons process is found, which profoundly affects the appearance of the continuous spectrum.

Effects of E-region electric fields on F-region parameters at the magnetic equator

The effects of E-region electric fields on F-region parameters like height of constant electron density contours (h_N) and semi-thickness, at an equatorial station, Trivandrum, are investigated. The E-region east-west electric field (E_y) has been deduced using the horizontal magnetic field values from the ground magnetograms. It is found that the semi-thickness parameter and h_N follow closely the E-region electric field (E_y) variations in the forenoon and noon periods. In the afternoon, it is shown that there is close association between h_N and E_y, when the electric field variations are large. On a day-to-day basis also, h_N and the E-region electric field show very good correlation in the forenoon and noon hours. It is also shown that higher levels are affected more than the lower levels in the F-region by E_y.     

On the formation of metal-poor stars

The expulsion of metal-rich grains from collapsing protostars is considered, and it is concluded that stars of mass greater than 21M could be significantly depleted in heavy metals during their formation.     

Interferometric measurements of the λ 7319 Å doublet emissions of OII

Fabry-Perot interferometer observations of the OII 7319 Å line made from College, Alaska are presented. Significant Doppler shifts corresponding to the ion drift motion, caused by the convection electric fields, were observed under special conditions, but no steady observations were possible due to the sporadic nature of this emission. Very preliminary results of the observed doublet separation (≈0.836 Å) are also presented.
