The Pyreneo-Languedocian submarine sediment body, located in the western sector of the Gulf of Lions, is an example of a fan-like depositional system essentially controlled by salt tectonics. The area was subjected to a combined effect of overburden subsidence into the evacuated salt layer and a significant distal salt thickening, due to preferential basinward salt migration. This mode of salt migration impacted the Quaternary sea-bottom morphology by creating a large midslope topographic low, providing space accommodation for the Pyreneo-Languedocian fan. At gulf scale, the fan is a unique feature because unchannelized sedimentary environment in the area occurs at slope level, thus in minor water depth in relation to all other deep-water sedimentary systems offshore Gulf of Lions. In 2001, the development of seasonal anoxia was studied in two waterways located at the head of Delaware’s northern inland bay, Rehoboth Bay. Bald Eagle Creek is a northern tributary of the bay, which has tidal exchange with Torquay Canal (a dead-end canal) via a short channel with a 1.4 m sill. Mean low water depth in Torquay Canal is about 2 m, but dredging produced over a dozen depressions with a total water depth of 5.5 m. During the summer of 2000, four major fish kills were reported in Torquay Canal and Bald Eagle Creek with more than 2.5 million juvenile menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus) killed. Low O2 concentration was assumed to be the problem but production of toxic H2S is more likely. From late spring 2001, we conducted in situ determination of temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved O2, and H2S in Torquay Canal and Bald Eagle Creek. During spring, water column stratification began in the depressions with warmer and less salty water observed in the upper layer, and cooler, saltier water below 2 m. O2 was at saturation levels in the surface waters but was not detectable below 2 m by the end of May. The depressions were anoxic with H2S accumulating to mM concentrations in June. A storm event prior to July 12 mixed these two layers with a subsequent loss of H2S. The H2S levels again increased in the deep water due to stratification and reached another maximum in late August. Another storm event occurred at this time resulting in no detectable O2 and up to 400 μM H2S in surface waters. H2S appears to be the primary reason for fish kills in these tributaries. Aerators installed in Torquay Canal on June 21 had no significant effect on abating stratification and anoxic conditions beyond their immediate area.  相似文献

Functional groups have become an important tool for characterizing communities of marine and estuarine environments. Their use also holds promise for a better understanding of the temporal dynamics of phytoplankton. This study aimed to evaluate the contributions of phytoplankton size fractions and functional groups characterizing short‐term variation throughout tidal cycles and between dry and rainy seasons in a tropical estuarine system. Camamu Bay is an oligotrophic estuarine system that is under strong influence from tropical shelf waters and is characterized by high salinity and low concentrations of dissolved nutrients. Surface‐water samples were collected at nine sampling sites distributed among the three hydrodynamic regions of the bay, and at a mooring, at 3‐hr intervals during tidal cycles (12 hr each) in both the rainy and the dry season. Although the abundances of the phytoplankton fractions (pico‐, nano‐, and micro‐) were higher in the rainy season and during periods of higher tide, they were not significantly higher. The phytoplankton community in the bay comprises three functional groups: GI = “colonial” (i.e., chain‐forming diatoms and filamentous cyanobacteria); GII = “GALD >40” (i.e., pennate and centric diatoms with MDL >40 µm), and GIII = “flagellates” (i.e., species with motility via flagella). Nanoflagellates were the most abundant form in the bay, while chain‐forming diatoms, in particular, contributed to the microphytoplankton fraction during both the rainy and dry seasons. Functional groups, as defined by cluster analysis, reflected ecological strategies compatible with the high hydrodynamics of Camamu Bay, which is characterized by processes of tidal‐forced intense mixing, mainly during periods of spring tides. The phytoplankton of the bay was found to possess a series of attributes (functional traits) that endow them with some resistance to sinking. Functional diversity indexes (FEve, FDiv, and FDis) indicated a stable community without significant short‐term variation due to low variability in the environmental conditions of the system during the study period.  相似文献

Nantgarw phosphatic (bone-ash) porcelain (ca. 1813–1820) is renowned for its translucency and the high quality of its enamel decoration. However, only a small proportion of its wares (perhaps 10%) were successfully fired due to sagging (body distortion) and other problems. This indicates that: (1) In terms of its potential for generating a minimum melt, the Nantgarw paste had an unusually fertile composition, or (2) Nantgarw's staff had difficulties in controlling kiln temperatures, so that its wares tended to be overfired. This issue has been addressed using analytical data for sherds excavated from the factory site. Detailed modal, petrographic, and geochemical data demonstrate that extensively sagged wasters contain a high proportion (∼43–63 vol %) of a former melt phase but are surprisingly porous (7–25 vol % pores). In terms of minimum melt generation, the sagged samples have a more fertile bulk composition than their successfully fired counterparts. Most of the wasters contain subsolidus anorthite (∼An95) enclosed by a melt phase with (once corrected for entrained silica polymorph crystallites) a eutectic (minimum melt) composition. The anorthite, however, was completely resorbed by the melt in some of the sagged samples, which subsequently crystallized liquidus anorthite that displays a quenched morphology. These samples were therefore fired above (Tmax <1430°C, as estimated from melt compositions) the eutectic (T∼1290°C) in the anorthite–tricalcium phosphate–silica system. The fact that other wasters contain subsolidus anorthite and a minimum melt shows that firing at the eutectic did not guarantee a successful firing, regardless of the melt fertility of the paste. It is likely that the duration of firing near Tmax and character of the object (i.e., flatware vs. hollow-ware) were also important variables in this regard. In addition to producing their well-known phosphatic wares, Nantgarw's proprietors apparently also experimented with silicious pastes with compositions akin to true porcelain. Some of silicious sherds found at the site have a lead-bearing (∼15 wt % PbO) glaze, indicating that they survived an early, high temperature biscuit firing, after which they were fired at lower temperature in the glost kiln (i.e., a “soft-paste type” firing sequence). Evidence that the Nantgarw kiln could achieve temperatures in the order of 1400°C further suggests that these silicious sherds are b.f. wasters. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

After ~ 11,000 years of glacio-isostatically induced forced regression, geomorphological evidence indicates that the coastline of eastern Melville Island, western Canadian Arctic Archipelago, is now being transgressed. Recently developed coastal features associated with this transgression include: drowned gullies and small estuaries, barriers and lagoons, barrier islands, erosional notches, backstepping beaches, and drowned tundra vegetation and vehicle tracks dating from the 1970s. We mainly attribute this relative sea-level rise to the eastward migration of a peripheral crustal forebulge. Furthermore, the reported transgression also includes a component from recent eustatic sea-level rise during the 20th century. Recent earthquakes recorded in the Gustav-Lougheed Arch Seismic Zone located in Byam Martin Channel, 70 km east of Melville Island, suggest that neotectonics could also be involved in local relative sea-level adjustments. Other factors associated with global warming, especially the formation of an earlier shore-ice lead coupled with increased storm activity might also be responsible for some of the coastal changes. Our study indicates that the current zero isobase, separating areas of net transgression from those of net regression, is now located off the east coast of the island. Our field observations support recent glacio-isostatic modelling that shows the island is presently undergoing a transgression.  相似文献

In situ remediation technologies have the potential to alter subsurface properties such as natural organic matter (NOM) content or character, which could affect the organic carbon‐water partitioning behavior of chlorinated organic solvents, including dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs). Laboratory experiments were completed to determine the nature and extent of changes in the partitioning behavior of trichloroethene (TCE) caused by in situ chemical oxidation or in situ surfactant flushing. Sandy porous media were obtained from the subsurface at a site in Orlando, Florida. Experiments were run using soil slurries in zero‐headspace reactors (ZHRs) following a factorial design to study the effects of porous media properties (sand vs. loamy sand with different total organic carbon [TOC] contents), TCE concentration (DNAPL presence or absence), and remediation agent type (potassium permanganate vs. activated sodium persulfate, Dowfax 8390 vs. Tween 80). Results revealed that the fraction of organic carbon (foc) of porous media after treatment by oxidants or surfactants was higher or lower relative to that in the untreated media controls. Isotherm experiments were run using the treated and control media to measure the distribution coefficient (Kd) of TCE. Organic carbon‐water partitioning coefficient values (Koc) calculated from the experimental data revealed that Koc values for TCE in the porous media were altered via treatment using oxidants and surfactants. This alteration can affect the validity of estimates of contaminant mass remaining after remediation. Thus, potential changes in partitioning behavior should be considered to help avoid decision errors when judging the effectiveness of an in situ remediation technology.  相似文献

This study examines the remediation of surface water quality in a severely degraded coastal acid sulfate soil landscape. The remediation strategy consisted of partial restoration of marine tidal exchange within estuarine creeks and incremental tidal inundation of acidified soils, plus strategic liming of drainage waters. Time-series water quality and climatic data collected over 5 years were analysed to assess changes in water quality due to this remediation strategy. A time-weighted rainfall function (TWR) was generated from daily rainfall data to integrate the effects of antecedent rainfall on shallow groundwater levels in a way that was relevant to acid export dynamics. Significant increases in mean pH were evident over time at multiple monitoring sites. Regression analysis at multiple sites revealed a temporal progression of change in significant relationships between mean daily electrical conductivity (EC) vs. mean daily pH, and TWR vs. mean daily pH. These data demonstrate a substantial decrease over time in the magnitude of creek acidification per given quantity of antecedent rainfall. Data also show considerable increase in soil pH (2–3 units) in formerly acidified areas subject to tidal inundation. This coincides with a decrease in soil pe, indicating stronger reducing conditions. These observations suggest a fundamental shift has occurred in sediment geochemistry in favour of proton-consuming reductive processes. Combined, these data highlight the potential effectiveness of marine tidal inundation as a landscape-scale acid sulfate soil remediation strategy.  相似文献

Breccias consisting of fragments of serpentinized peridotite in a carbonate cement were dredged abundantly from the slopes of transverse ridges existing at the offsets of the Mid Atlantic Ridge in the Romanche and Vema fracture zones. The carbonate cement consists of microcrystalline, low-magnesium calcite and occasionally also of aragonite. The results of chemical and of 18O/16O, 87Sr/86Sr, and 234U/238U isotopic analyses of these carbonates suggest that in part they were deposited at high pH from interstitial sea water circulating in the spaces between the serpentinized peridotite fragments. Several possibilities are discussed as to the mechanisms which caused the ultramafic rocks to become brecciated. It is concluded that the breccias are probably tectonic in origin, and were formed in shear zones resulting from one of several possible types of differential motions between crustal blocks in the tectonically active offset zones. The breccias from the Mid Atlantic Ridge are similar to serpentinite-carbonate breccias associated with serpentinite bodies in the Apennine (Italy) ophiolite complex, which represents uplifted fragments of Mesozoic oceanic crust. The origin of these ophiolitic breccias may be similar to that of the Mid Atlantic Ridge breccias.  相似文献

Climate change, ambient ozone, and health in 50 US cities   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:2  
We investigated how climate change could affect ambient ozone concentrations and the subsequent human health impacts. Hourly concentrations were estimated for 50 eastern US cities for five representative summers each in the 1990s and 2050s, reflecting current and projected future climates, respectively. Estimates of future concentrations were based on the IPCC A2 scenario using global climate, regional climate, and regional air quality models. This work does not explore the effects of future changes in anthropogenic emissions, but isolates the impact of altered climate on ozone and health. The cities’ ozone levels are estimated to increase under predicted future climatic conditions, with the largest increases in cities with present-day high pollution. On average across the 50 cities, the summertime daily 1-h maximum increased 4.8 ppb, with the largest increase at 9.6 ppb. The average number of days/summer exceeding the 8-h regulatory standard increased 68%. Elevated ozone levels correspond to approximately a 0.11% to 0.27% increase in daily total mortality. While actual future ozone concentrations depend on climate and other influences such as changes in emissions of anthropogenic precursors, the results presented here indicate that with other factors constant, climate change could detrimentally affect air quality and thereby harm human health.  相似文献

The influence of the MJO on the continental United States (CONUS) surface air temperature (SAT) and precipitation is examined based on 30?years of daily data from 1979–2008. Composites are constructed for each of the eight phases of the Wheeler-Hendon MJO index over 12 overlapping three-month seasons. To ensure that the MJO signal is distinguished from other patterns of climate variability, several steps are taken: (a) only days classified as “MJO events” are used in the composites, (b) statistical significance of associated composites is assessed using a Monte Carlo procedure, and (c) intraseasonal frequencies are matched to the unfiltered data. Composites of other fields are also shown in order to examine how the SAT and precipitation anomalies are associated with large-scale circulations providing a link between the tropics and extratropics. The strongest and most significant MJO effects on SAT are found during the northern winter seasons. When enhanced convection is located over the equatorial Indian Ocean, below-average SAT tends to occur in New England and the Great Lakes region. As enhanced tropical convection shifts over the Maritime continent, above-average SAT appears in the eastern states of the US from Maine to Florida. The MJO influence on precipitation is also significant during northern winter seasons. When enhanced convection is located over the Maritime continent, more precipitation is observed in the central plains of the US. Enhanced precipitation also occurs over the west coast of the US when convective activity is stronger over the Indian Ocean. During the northern summer and fall, the MJO impact on precipitation is mainly significant at lower latitudes, over Mexico and southeastern US.  相似文献
