We present gas temperature, density, entropy and cooling time profiles for the cores of a sample of 15 galaxy groups observed with Chandra . We find that the entropy profiles follow a power-law profile down to very small fractions of R 500. Differences between the gas profiles of groups with radio-loud and radio-quiet brightest group galaxies are only marginally significant, and there is only a small difference in the   L X: T X  relations, for the central regions we study with Chandra , between the radio-loud and radio-quiet objects in our sample, in contrast to the much larger difference found on scales of the whole group in earlier work. However, there is evidence, from splitting the sample based on the mass of the central black holes, that repeated outbursts of active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity may have a long-term cumulative effect on the entropy profiles. We argue that, to first order, energy injection from radio sources does not change the global structure of the gas in the cores of groups, although it can displace gas on a local level. In most systems, it appears that AGN energy injection serves primarily to counter the effects of radiative cooling, rather than being responsible for the similarity breaking between groups and clusters.  相似文献

High-dispersion near-infrared spectra have been taken of seven highly evolved, variable, intermediate-mass (4–6 M) asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud and Small Magellanic Cloud in order to look for C, N and O variations that are expected to arise from third dredge-up and hot-bottom burning. The pulsation of the objects has been modelled, yielding stellar masses, and spectral synthesis calculations have been performed in order to derive abundances from the observed spectra. For two stars, abundances of C, N, O, Na, Al, Ti, Sc and Fe were derived and compared with the abundances predicted by detailed AGB models. Both stars show very large N enhancements and C deficiencies. These results provide the first observational confirmation of the long-predicted production of primary nitrogen by the combination of third dredge-up and hot-bottom burning in intermediate-mass AGB stars. It was not possible to derive abundances for the remaining five stars: three were too cool to model, while another two had strong shocks in their atmospheres which caused strong emission to fill the line cores and made abundance determination impossible. The latter occurrence allows us to predict the pulsation phase interval during which observations should be made if successful abundance analysis is to be possible.  相似文献

Excitation of electron cyclotron waves and whistlers by reflected auroral electrons which possess a loss-cone distribution is investigated. Based on a given magnetic field and density model, the instability problem is studied over a broad region along the auroral field lines. This region covers altitudes ranging from one quarter of an Earth radius to five Earth radii. It is found that the growth rate is significant only in the region of low altitude, say below the source region of the auroral kilometric radiation. In the high altitude region the instability is insignificant either because of low refractive indices or because of small loss cone angles.  相似文献

The region including the Aristarchus Plateau and Montes Harbinger is probably the most diverse, geologically, of any area of comparble size on the Moon. This part of the northwest quadrant of the lunar near side includes unique dark mantling material; both the densest concentration and the largest of the sinuous rilles; apparent volcanic vents, sinks, and domes; mare materials of various ages and colors; one of the freshest large craters (Aristarchus) with ejecta having unique colors and albedos; and three other large craters in different states of flooding and degradation (krieger, Herodotus, and Prinz). The three best-authenticated lunar transient phenomena were also observed here.This study is based principally on photographic and remote sensing observations made from Earth and Apollo orbiting space craft. Results include (1) delineation of geologic map units and their stratigraphic relationships; (2) discussion of the complex interrelationships between materials of volcanic and impact origin, including the effects of excavation, redistribution and mixing of previously deposited materials by younger impact craters; (3) deduction of physical and chemical properties of certain of the geologic units, based on both the remote-sensing information and on extrapolation of Apollo data to this area; and (4) development of a detailed geologic history of the region, outlining the probable sequence of events that resulted in its present appearance.A primary concern of the investigation has been anomalous red dark mantle on the Plateau. Based on an integration of Earth- and lunar orbit-based data, this layer seems to consist of fine-grained, block-free material containing a relatively large fraction of orange glass. It is probably of pyroclastic origin, laid down at some time during the Imbrian period of mare flooding.  相似文献

A family of rectilinear periodic solutions of the three-body problem, in which the central body collides alternately with each of the two other bodies, is investigated numerically for all values of the three masses. It is found that for every mass combination there exists just one solution of this kind. The linear stability of the orbits with respect to arbitrary three-dimensional perturbations is also investigated. Domains of stability and instability are displayed in a triangular mass diagram. Their boundaries form one-parameter families of critical orbits, which are tabulated. Limiting cases where one or two masses vanish are studied in detail. The domains of stability cover nearly one half of the total area in the mass diagram: this reinforces the conclusion that real triple stars might have motions of a kind entirely different from the usual hierarchical arrangement.  相似文献

The solar magnetic fields observed in active regions and their residues are thought to be parts of toroidal field systems renewed every 11-yr cycle from a poloidal field. The latter may be either a reversing (dynamo) field or a non-reversing, primordial field. The latter view was held for some 70 yr, but the apparent reversals of the polar-cap fields in 1957–8 and the development of dynamo theory brought wide acceptance of the former. Here we consider evidence for and against each model, with these conclusions. (i) Several errors combine so that the non-spot measurements of gross magnetic fluxes are too low by factors of 10 or more. A permanent field of 2 G or more might remain unobserved. (ii) Measurements of average magnetic field strength are subject to various large errors. In particular, the reported reversals of the polar-cap fields are better explained in terms of tilts of toroidal field residues. (iii) Observations of new-cycle magnetic fields among old-cycle fields, of the gradual fading away of large unipolar regions, and the ubiquitous jumble of very small magnetic loop structures appear explicable only in terms of a primordial field. (iv) More positive evidence of a primordial field is found in the extreme order, symmetry and long-term stability of the polar cap streamers or rays. During one eclipse (1954) the primordial field was seen in the absence of all toroidal field residues. (v) A form of reversal of the interplanetary magnetic field is re-interpreted and shown to be consistent with a primordial, but not a dynamo, field. (vi) A test for a primordial field is that the fields below coronal holes should tend to be positive (outwards) in the northern hemisphere and negative in the southern hemisphere. (vii) Further evidence may be available by studying various plasma structures below coronal holes. An urgent requirement is a study of fibrils, faculae, macrospicules and rays in these regions.  相似文献

On three nights in February 1976 we carried out polarimetric measurements, in V, of the short periodic eclipsing binary XY UMa, covering a complete cycle. The results are as follows:
  1. Within all phase intervals the linear polarization does not exceed 0.1%.
  2. In the phase range 0 p .95–1 p .35 the scatter of the Stokes parametersQ andU is about twice that within the phase interval 0 p .35–0 p .95.
  3. A periodogram analysis of these data revealed a period of 21000 s, which is equal to half the orbital periodP o=0d.47899 within 1.5%.
From these we derive the conclusions that no circumstellar envelope can be made responsible for the observed long-term changes of the light curve and system brightness, supporting the earlier spectroscopic finding. The different scatter of the Stokes parameters at different phase intervals and theP o/2 periodicity are in favor of the star spot model for XY UMa proposed by one of the authors (E. G.).  相似文献

An investigation of low-resolution ratio spectra of Jupiter, Saturn, and Titan in the region 5400–6500 Å has permitted new evaluations of ammonia absorption bands. The distribution of ammonia over the disk of Jupiter is very inhomogeneous. The carbon-to-nitrogen ratio is distinctly different from the solar value, but this is probably a result of uneven mixing of methane and ammonia, as suggested previously by Kuiper, rather than a compositional anomaly. The abundance of ammonia on Saturn also shows spatial variations, but appears constant in time over a 3-yr period. Two weak, unidentified absorptions were discovered in the red region of Titan's spectrum, in the absence of any detectable ammonia. The new upper limit is ηN < 120 cm-am.  相似文献

Non-axisymmetric motions of the outer core of the Earth are important for the dynamo problem and the excitation of the decade variations of the polar motion. The components of the vector of a rigid rotation of the outer core about an inclined axis were estimated by a first-order approximation of the frozen- field theory of the geomagnetic secular variation from 1903.5 to 1975.5. The trends and quasi-periodic constituents of these quantities were computed. It was shown that the position and time behaviour of the rotational pole of the outer core differ considerably from the well-know co-ordinates of the dipole axis. Some periods of the equatorial components of the rotational vector are comparable with those of the axial component previously derived for a pure axial rotation. Additionally, the time behaviour of the pole path shows events like the well-known Markowitz wobble but naturally with other extent. These and other results suggested that the investigations are worth to be continued in future by some physical interpretations.  相似文献
