We present two BeppoSAX observations of the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3516, performed four months apart (late 1996–early 1997). The earlier spectrum is considerably weaker and harder in the whole 0.1–50 keV energy range. In addition, the warm absorber oxygen features, which were already observed with ROSAT and ASCA , are much less pronounced. The most straightforward explanation is that in 1996 November NGC 3516 was being seen through a substantial ( N H≃1022 cm−2) column of cold material. This is the first confirmation with modern instrumentation that NGC 3516 indeed undergoes phases of strong cold X-ray absorption. We speculate that these intervals may be connected to the onset of the remarkably variable UV absorption system, making NGC 3516 the best known example of a low-luminosity broad absorption line (BAL) quasar. The absorbing matter could be provided by clouds ablated from the rim of the circumnuclear molecular torus, seen at a rather high inclination angle.  相似文献

Three-dimensional computer plots were drawn for various zero-velocity contours of the restricted three-body problem (=0.1, 0.3, 0.5) and the restricted four-body problem (1=2=3==0.33). The infinitesimal mass was constrained to the plane of the finite masses. The three-dimensional representations yield a clear insight into the regions of motion and the stability of motion near the equilibrium points.  相似文献

Experiments to entrain dust with electrostatic and fluid-dynamic forces result in particulate clouds of aggregates rather than individual dust grains. This is explained within the framework of Griffith-flaw theory regarding the comminution/breakage of weak solids. Physical and electrical inhomogeneities in powders are equivalent to microcracks in solids insofar as they facilitate failure at stress risers. Electrical charging of powders induces bulk sample stresses similar to mechanical stresses experienced by strong solids, depending on the nature of the charging. A powder mass therefore “breaks” into clumps rather than separating into individual dust particles. This contrasts with the expectation that electrical forces on the Moon will eject a submicron population of dust from the regolith into the exosphere. A lunar regolith will contain physical and electrostatic inhomogeneities similar to those in most charged powders.  相似文献

Many papers have shown that bioenergy and land-use are potentially important elements in a strategy to limit anthropogenic climate change. But, significant expansion of bioenergy production can have a large terrestrial footprint. In this paper, we test the implications for land use, the global energy system, emissions and mitigation costs of meeting a specific climate target, using a single fossil fuel and industrial sector policy instrument, but with five alternative bioenergy and land-use policy architectures. These scenarios are illustrative in nature, and designed to explore trade-offs. We find that the policies we examined have differing effects on the different segments of the economy. Comprehensive land policies can reduce land-use change emissions, increasing allowable emissions in the energy system, but have implications for the cost of food. Bioenergy penalties and constraints, on the other hand, have little effect on food prices, but result in less bioenergy and thus can increase mitigation costs and energy prices.  相似文献

The Emmaville-Torrington emeralds were first discovered in 1890 in quartz veins hosted within a Permian metasedimentary sequence, consisting of meta-siltstones, slates and quartzites intruded by pegmatite and aplite veins from the Moule Granite. The emerald deposit genesis is consistent with a typical granite-related emerald vein system. Emeralds from these veins display colour zonation alternating between emerald and clear beryl. Two fluid inclusion types are identified: three-phase (brine+vapour+halite) and two-phase (vapour+liquid) fluid inclusions. Fluid inclusion studies indicate the emeralds were precipitated from saline fluids ranging from approximately 33 mass percent NaCl equivalent. Formational pressures and temperatures of 350 to 400 °C and approximately 150 to 250 bars were derived from fluid inclusion and petrographic studies that also indicate emerald and beryl precipitation respectively from the liquid and vapour portions of a two-phase (boiling) system. The distinct colour zonations observed in the emerald from these deposits is the first recorded emerald locality which shows evidence of colour variation as a function of boiling. The primary three-phase and primary two-phase FITs are consistent with alternating chromium-rich ??striped?? colour banding. Alternating emerald zones with colourless beryl are due to chromium and vanadium partitioning in the liquid portion of the boiling system. The chemical variations observed at Emmaville-Torrington are similar to other colour zoned emeralds from other localities worldwide likely precipitated from a boiling system as well.  相似文献

Nassarius kraussianus populations in the Durban and Richards Bay harbours (along the eastern seaboard of southern Africa) and in the Knysna lagoon (southern Cape coast) showed imposex development, confirming bioavailability of tributyltin (TBT) in these waterways. Incidence of imposex (which ranged from 29% to 100%) and relative penis length of females (RPL; which ranged from 1.3% to 55.2%) were markedly variable among populations from different sites in each waterway, indicative of localised effects of TBT contamination. Shell length of the snails was apparently not correlated with contamination level, as assessed from imposex measurements. While population imposex features are easy to determine and often provide a sensitive biomarker of TBT exposure, the discussion outlines reservations when extrapolating these to general ecological situations. Additionally, this study represents the first published report on the topic for sub-Saharan, African harbours, some of which seem remarkably less affected than suggested for other world regions.  相似文献

Quadratic estimators of components of a nested spatial covariance function are presented. Estimators are unbiased and possess a minimum norm property. Inversion of a covariance matrix is required but, by assuming that spatial correlation is absent, a priori, matrix inversion can be avoided. The loss of efficiency that results from this assumption is discussed. Methods can be generalized to include estimation of components of a generalized polynomial covariance assuming the underlying process to be an intrinsic random function. Particular attention is given to the special case where just two components of spatial covariance exist, one of which represents a nugget effect.  相似文献

The amplitude of vertical, short period (1 s) Lg -waves from 575 shallow earthquakes recorded within the distance range 0|Mo-30|Mo by the Rhodesian seismograph network during the period 1968–77 are analysed to separate the effects of earthquake size, epicentral distance and station structure.
When corrected for geometrical spreading and Airy phase dispersion the decay of amplitude with distance yields an estimate of anelastic attenuation of 0.160 deg-1 which gives an average value of Q (the specific quality factor) of 603 |Mp 50 for propagation paths that lie along and across the East African Rift System. Inversion of the amplitude—distance curve gives the calibration or distance normalizing function. Thereby the amplitude of Lg can be used to provide an estimate of the size of small, local earthquakes in terms of the teleseismic body wave magnitude mb (after Henderson). The station effects of the six seismograph stations making up the network all lie within |Mp0.1 magnitude units. Since three of the stations lie on the Rhodesian craton while the remaining three lie on Precambrian mobile belts adjacent to the craton, the Precambrian basement geology does not significantly affect the amplitude of Lg  相似文献
