Direct sediment inputs from forest roads at stream crossings are a major concern for water quality and aquatic habitat. Legacy road–stream crossing approaches, or the section of road leading to the stream, may have poor water and grade control upon reopening, thus increasing the potential for negative impacts to water quality. Rainfall simulation experiments were conducted on the entire running surface area associated with six reopened stream crossing approaches in the south‐western Virginia Piedmont physiographic region, USA. Event‐based surface run‐off and associated total suspended solid (TSS) concentrations were compared among a succession of gravel surfacing treatments that represented increasing intensities of best management practice (BMP) implementation. The three treatments were no gravel (10–19% cover), low gravel (34–60% cover), and high gravel (50–99% cover). Increased field hydraulic conductivity was associated with maximized surface cover and ranged from 7.2 to 41.6, 11.9 to 46.3, and 16.0 to 58.6 mm h−1 respectively for the no gravel, low gravel, and high gravel treatments. Median TSS concentration of surface run‐off for the no gravel treatment (2.84 g l−1) was greater than low gravel (1.10 g l−1) and high gravel (0.82 g l−1) by factors of 2.6 and 3.5 respectively. Stream crossing approaches with 90–99% surface cover had TSS concentrations below 1 g l−1. Reducing the length of road segments that drain directly to the stream can reduce the costs associated with gravel surfacing. The authors show that historical property damage losses from US hurricanes contain climate signals. The methodology is based
on a statistical model that combines a specification for the number of loss events with a specification for the amount of
loss per event. Separate models are developed for annual and extreme losses. A Markov chain Monte Carlo procedure is used
to generate posterior samples from the models. Results indicate the chance of at least one loss event increases when the springtime
north–south surface pressure gradient over the North Atlantic is weaker than normal, the Atlantic ocean is warmer than normal,
El Ni?o is absent, and sunspots are few. However, given at least one loss event, the magnitude of the loss per annum is related
only to ocean temperature. The 50-year return level for a loss event is largest under a scenario featuring a warm Atlantic
Ocean, a weak North Atlantic surface pressure gradient, El Ni?o, and few sunspots. The work provides a framework for anticipating

Wildfire is a landscape-scale disturbance that changes the rate and magnitude of many earth surface processes. The impacts of fire on earth surface processes can vary substantially from place to place depending on a variety of site-specific conditions, including topography, fire severity, regional climate, vegetation type, and soil type. This variation makes it critical to bring together scientists studying fire and earth surface processes from different perspectives and in different parts of the world. This special issue pulls together studies that present cutting-edge research addressing the geomorphic and hydrologic impacts of wildfire across a range of spatial and temporal scales, including advances in managing some of the negative, short-term effects of wildfire. Contributions to this collection cover the following themes: insights from field measurements, sediment and carbon redistribution, insights from process-based modeling, post-fire debris flows, and post-fire mitigation. The work presented in this special issue will help to advance the capabilities of scientists and land managers to observe, simulate, and anticipate changes to earth surface processes following fire. 相似文献

The authors illustrate a statistical point process model that uses the spatial occurrence of nonviolent tornadoes to predict the distribution of the rare, violent tornadoes that occur during springtime across the US central Great Plains. The average rate of nonviolent tornadoes is 55 per 104 km2 per 62 years which compares with an average rate of only 1.5 violent tornadoes per 104 km2 over the same period (less than 3 %). Violent tornado report density peaks at 2.6 per 104 km2 (62 yr) in the city but is only 0.7 per 104 km2 in the countryside. The risk of a violent tornado is higher by a factor of 1.5, on average, in the vicinity of less violent tornadoes after accounting for the population bias. The model for the occurrence rate of violent tornadoes indicates that rates are lower by 10.3 (3.6, 16.5) % (95 % CI) for every 1 km increase in distance from the nearest nonviolent tornado, controlling for distance from the nearest city. Model significance and the distance-from-nearest nonviolent tornado parameter are not sensitive to population threshold or the definition of a violent tornado. The authors show that the model is useful for generating a catalogue of touchdown points that can be used as a component to a tornado catastrophe model. 相似文献

This study evaluated the long‐term performance of enhanced anaerobic bioremediation (EAB) at chlorinated solvent sites to determine if sustained treatment processes were helping to prevent concentration rebound. A database of groundwater concentration versus time records was compiled for 34 sites, with at least 3 years of posttreatment monitoring data (median = 4.7 years, range = 3.0 to 11.7 years). Long‐term performance was evaluated based on order‐of‐magnitude (OoM) changes in parent compound concentrations during various monitoring periods. Results indicate that, relative to the pretreatment concentration, a median concentration reduction for all 34 sites of 1.0 OoM (90% reduction) was achieved by the end of the posttreatment monitoring period. No rebound was observed at 65% of the sites between the first year of posttreatment monitoring and the final year. During this posttreatment period, Mann‐Kendall trend analysis indicated that the concentration was stable or decreasing at 89% of the sites where a trend could be established (n = 27; 33% decreasing, 56% stable, 11% increasing). Statistical analysis indicates there is no evidence that the distribution of median concentration reductions after the first year of posttreatment monitoring was different than the distribution of median reductions 2 to 11 years later at the end of the monitoring period (p = 0.67). Similarly, statistical analysis indicates that there is no evidence that the distribution of median reductions for a larger set of sites (n = 84) with less than 3 years of posttreatment monitoring data (1.1 OoM; 92% reduction) was different than the distribution of median OoM reductions for the 34‐site dataset with longer monitoring periods (p = 0.80). This suggests that, at a typical site, a 3‐year monitoring period should be sufficient for evaluating performance. The results of this study indicate that, in the long term, after the end of active treatment, sustained treatment processes contribute to relatively modest concentration reductions but do mitigate rebound at the majority of EAB sites. 相似文献

What controls the architecture of drainage networks is a fundamental question in geomorphology. Recent work has elucidated the mechanisms of drainage network development in steadily uplifting landscapes, but the controls on drainage‐network morphology in transient landscapes are relatively unknown. In this paper we exploit natural experiments in drainage network development in incised Plio‐Quaternary alluvial fan surfaces in order to understand and quantify drainage network development in highly transient landscapes, i.e. initially unincised low‐relief surfaces that experience a pulse of rapid base‐level drop followed by relative base‐level stasis. Parallel drainage networks formed on incised alluvial‐fan surfaces tend to have a drainage spacing that is approximately proportional to the magnitude of the base‐level drop. Numerical experiments suggest that this observed relationship between the magnitude of base‐level drop and mean drainage spacing is the result of feedbacks among the depth of valley incision, mass wasting and nonlinear increases in the rate of colluvial sediment transport with slope gradient on steep valley side slopes that lead to increasingly wide valleys in cases of larger base‐level drop. We identify a threshold magnitude of base‐level drop above which side slopes lengthen sufficiently to promote increases in contributing area and fluvial incision rates that lead to branching and encourage drainage networks to transition from systems of first‐order valleys to systems of higher‐order, branching valleys. The headward growth of these branching tributaries prevents the development of adjacent, ephemeral drainages and promotes a higher mean valley spacing relative to cases in which tributaries do not form. Model results offer additional insights into the response of initially unincised landscapes to rapid base‐level drop and provide a preliminary basis for understanding how varying amounts of base‐level change influence valley network morphology. Remediation of groundwater contaminated by chlorinated hydrocarbons via in situ technologies such as direct injection of nanoscale zero valent iron (ZVI, Fe(O)) particles is increasingly common. However, assessing target compound degradation by abiotic processes is difficult because (1) the injection may displace the contaminant plume so that concentration measurements alone are often inconclusive and (2) biodegradation may also occur, making it challenging to identify and evaluate the abiotic degradation component. In this study, trichloroethylene (TCE) and 1,1,1-trichloroethane (1,1,1-TCA) were treated in a highly heterogeneous hydrogeologic setting. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential for compound-specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA) to monitor the effectiveness of ZVI injection by assessing TCE and 1,1,1-TCA degradation. Prior to ZVI injection, carbon isotope measurements demonstrated biodegradation of TCE by native microorganisms. This in situ biodegradation was quantified by measuring the enrichment of 13C in TCE samples downstream of the suspected source. When ZVI was injected through only two injection wells, no changes in TCE and 1,1,1-TCA isotope signatures were detected compared to preinjection values. In contrast, when ZVI was injected through 11 wells covering a greater portion of the contaminated area, 5 out of 10 monitoring wells showed further enrichment of 13C in either TCE or 1,1,1-TCA, indicating additional target compound transformation. The abiotic nature of this TCE transformation was confirmed through temporal trends in carbon isotope values of the putative transformation products cis-dichloroethylene (cis-DCE), ethene and ethane. This demonstrates the usefulness of CSIA in distinguishing abiotic vs. biotic transformation in the field. 相似文献

This study presents a novel approach for evaluating ground motion selection and modification (GMSM) procedures in the context of probabilistic seismic demand analysis. In essence, synthetic ground motions are employed to derive the benchmark seismic demand hazard curve (SDHC), for any structure and response quantity of interest, and to establish the causal relationship between a GMSM procedure and the bias in its resulting estimate of the SDHC. An example is presented to illustrate how GMSM procedures may be evaluated using synthetic motions. To demonstrate the robustness of the proposed approach, two significantly different stochastic models for simulating ground motions are considered. By quantifying the bias in any estimate of the SDHC, the proposed approach enables the analyst to rank GMSM procedures in their ability to accurately estimate the SDHC, examine the sufficiency of intensity measures employed in ground motion selection, and assess the significance of the conditioning intensity measure in probabilistic seismic demand analysis.
