Lorimer et al. have recently reported that the spin-down age (∼7 × 109 yr) of the low-mass binary pulsar PSR J1012+5307 is much higher than the cooling age (3 × 108 yr) of its white dwarf companion. The proposed solutions for this discrepancy are outlined and discussed. In particular, the revised cooling age estimate proposed by Alberts et al. agrees with data from other low-mass binary pulsar systems if a transition to the 'classical' cooling regime occurs between ∼0.14 and ∼0.28 M⊙ . If this transition is excluded, PSR J1012+5307 seems to have finished its accretion phase far from the spin-up line. 相似文献

This study examines the segregation of trace metals within and between fluvial morphologic units in sand-sized and finer
bed sediments in a cobble bed stream. The types of fluvial morphologic units sampled are low gradient riffles, high gradient
riffles, glides, eddy drop zones, lateral scour pools, attached bars, and detached bars. Three to nine samples were collected
from ten of each type of morphologic unit. All 12 metals show significantly different concentrations between some morphologic
units in sediments smaller than 2 mm. Eddy drop zones and attached bars consistently have the highest metal concentrations,
while low gradient riffles, high gradient riffles, and glides typically have the lowest concentrations. Metals showing the
greatest between-unit variability are Al, Cr, Fe, Cu, and Ti, followed by Co, Mn, and Pb, while Mg, Mn, V, and Zn display
relatively few differences between units. Lateral and longitudinal variations of metals within units are not significant,
and there was no consistent, predictable variation in metal concentrations with distance downstream. Results indicate that
metal studies in other gravel- and cobble-bed streams should include a reconnaissance survey to determine variations between
morphologic units, stratify sampling by morphologic unit, and analyze spatial autocorrelation to determine sample spacing.

We show that the light curves of soft X-ray transients (SXTs) follow naturally from the disc instability picture, adapted to take account of irradiation by the central X-ray source during the outburst. Irradiation prevents the disc from returning to the cool state until central accretion is greatly reduced. This happens only after most of the disc mass has been accreted by the central object, on a viscous time-scale, accounting naturally for the exponential decay of the outburst on a far longer time-scale (τ20–40 d) than seen in dwarf novae, without any need to manipulate the viscosity parameter α. The accretion of most of the disc mass in outburst explains the much longer recurrence time of SXTs compared with dwarf novae. This picture also suggests an explanation of the secondary maximum seen in SXT light curves about 50–75 d after the start of each outburst, since central irradiation triggers the thermal instability of the outer disc, adding to the central accretion rate one viscous time later. The X-ray outburst decay constant τ should on average increase with orbital period, but saturate at a roughly constant value ∼40 d for orbital periods longer than about a day. The bolometric light curve should show a linear rather than an exponential decay at late times (a few times τ). Outbursts of long-period systems should be entirely in the linear decay regime, as is observed in GRO J1744−28. UV and optical light curves should resemble the X-rays but have decay time-scales up to 2–4 times longer. 相似文献

We report the discovery, using NICMOS on the Hubble Space Telescope , of an arcsec-diameter Einstein ring in the gravitational lens system B1938+666. The lensing galaxy is also detected, and is most likely an early-type galaxy. Modelling of the ring is presented and compared with the radio structure from MERLIN maps. We show that the Einstein ring is consistent with the gravitational lensing of an extended infrared component, centred between the two radio components. 相似文献

Cathodoluminescence observations give information on the presence of europium in several minerals including apatite, fluorite, strontianite, and scheelite. Information on the oxidation state of the crystallization environment and on the partitioning of europium between coexisting mineral pairs may be obtained.The apatite in carbonatites and genetically related igneous rocks almost always contains europium in the divalent state. Occasionally both divalent and trivalent europium are observed.Europium is preferentially incorporated into strontianite when it crystallizes together with apatite in these same rocks. Two types of noise afflict strain and tilt measurement. Split Butte is a volcanic crater of Quaternary age consisting of a tephra ring which at one time retained a lava lake. The tephra is thinly bedded and is composed of partially palagonitized sideromelane clasts and subordinate lithic fragments. The beds typically dip radially away from the center of the crater, but locally dip toward the crater center. The tephra ring resulted from phreatomagmatic eruptions as a result of interaction of groundwater with rising basaltic magma, evidenced by glassy and granulated pyroclastic debris, the presence of abundant palagonite and other secondary minerals, numerous armored lapilli, and plastically deformed ash layers below ejecta blocks. Statistical analysis of the grain size distribution of the ash also indicates a phreatomagmatic origin of Split Butte tephra. In addition, the analysis reveals that the stratigraphically lowest tephra was deposited primarily by pyroclastic flow mechanisms while the upper tephra layers, comprising the bulk of the deposits, were deposited dominantly by airfall and pyroclastic surge. The lava lake and four en echelon basalt dikes were emplaced when phreatomagmatic activity at the vent ceased. Subsequent collapse caused a broad, shallow pit crater to form in the laval lake, and minor spattering occurred at one point along the pit crater scarp. Partial erosion of the tephra, deposition of aeolian sediments and encroachment of the Butte by later lava flows completed the development of Split Butte. 相似文献
