The aim of this paper is to discuss the phenomena of socio-political fragmentation of urban space, extended suburbanisation and metropolitan deconcentration, which have been important features of Brazilian urbanisation since the 1980s (metropolitan deconcentration partly since the 1970s). At the beginning it profiles the recent evolution of the country's economy, in order to make sense of the worsening situation in terms of exclusion and violence in big Brazilian cities since the 1980s. Against this background, recent trends both in terms of socio-spatial segregation and social conflict within cities (formation of enclaves dominated by drug trafficking organisations and self-segregation of the élites as a response to this) and in terms of the growing attractiveness of areas outside the biggest metropolises (extended suburbanisation and metropolitan deconcentration) are analysed. The main focus is the socio-political dimension of Brazilian urbanisation in the 1980s and 1990s, which has been undervalued by analysts.  相似文献

Net ecosystem metabolism (NEM) was measured in the Piauí River estuary, NE Brazil. A mass balance of C, N, and P was used to infer its sources and sinks. Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentrations and fluxes were measured over a year along this mangrove dominated estuary. DIC concentrations were high in all estuarine sections, particularly at the fluvial end member at the beginning of the rainy season. Carbon dioxide concentrations in the entire estuary were supersaturated throughout the year and highest in the upper estuarine compartment and freshwater, particularly at the rainy season, due to washout effects of carbonaceous soils and different organic anthropogenic effluents. The estuary served as a source of DIC to the atmosphere with an estimated flux of 13 mol CO2 m?2 year?1. Input from the river was 46 mol CO2 m?2 year?1. The metabolism of the system was heterotrophic, but short periods of autotrophy occurred in the lower more marine portions of the estuary. The pelagic system was more or less balanced between auto- and heterotrophy, whereas the benthic and intertidal mangrove region was heterotrophic. Estimated annual NEM yielded a total DIC production in the order of 18 mol CO2 m?2 year?1. The anthropogenic inputs of particulate C, N, and P, dissolved inorganic P (DIP), and DIC were significant. The fluvial loading of particulate organic carbon and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) was largely retained in two flow regulation and hydroelectric reservoirs, promoting a reduction of C:N and C:P particulate ratios in the estuary. The net nonconservative fluxes obtained by a mass balance approach revealed that the estuary acts as a source of DIP, DIN, and DIC, the latter one being almost equivalent to the losses to the atmosphere. Mangrove forests and tidal mudflats were responsible for most of NEM rates and are the main sites of organic decomposition to sustain net heterotrophy. The main sources for this organic matter are the fluvial and anthropogenic inputs. The mangrove areas are the highest estuarine sources of DIP, DIC, and DIN.  相似文献

The ability to realistically model flows through heterogeneous domains, which contain both solid and fluid phases, can benefit the analysis and simulation of complex real-world systems. Environmental impact studies, as well as engineering equipment design, can both take advantage of reliable modelling of turbulent flow in permeable media. Turbulence models proposed for such flows depend on the order of application of volume-and time-average operators. Two methodologies, following the two orders of integration, lead to distinct governing equations for the statistical quantities. This paper reviews recently published methodologies to mathematically characterize turbulent transport in permeable media. A new concept, called double-decomposition, is here discussed and instantaneous local transport equations are reviewed for clear flow before the time and volume averaging procedures are applied to them. Equations for turbulent transport follow, including their detailed derivation and a proposed model for suitable numerical simulations. The case of a moving porous bed is also discussed and transport equations for the mean and turbulent flow fields are presented.  相似文献

The Capanema Mine, an iron ore deposit, is located in the central portion of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero, State of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. Mine development data from approximately 7000 drillholes were used for a comparative study between kriging variance and interpolation variance as uncertainty measurements associated with ordinary kriging estimates. As known, the traditional kriging variance does not depend on local data and, therefore, does not measure the actual dispersion of data. On the other hand, the interpolation variance measures adequately the local dispersion of data used for an ordinary kriging estimate. This paper presents an application of the concept of interpolation variance for measuring uncertainties associated with ordinary kriging estimates of Fe and silica grades. These data were selected for their distinct statistical characteristics with Fe presenting a negatively skewed distribution and, consequently, a low dispersion, and silica a positively skewed distribution and, therefore, a high variability. Comparative studies between the two uncertainty measurements associated with ordinary kriging estimates of Fe and silica proved the superiority of the interpolation variance as a reliable and precise alternative to the kriging variance.  相似文献

This study reports the performance of a combined anaerobic–aerobic packed‐bed reactor that can be used to treat domestic sewage. Initially, a bench‐scale reactor was operated in three experimental phases. In the first phase, the anaerobic reactor was operated with an average organic matter removal efficiency of 77% for a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 10 h. In the second phase, the reactor was operated with an anaerobic stage followed by an aerobic zone, resulting in a mean value of 91% efficiency. In the third and final phase, the anaerobic–aerobic reactor was operated with recirculation of the effluent of the reactor through the anaerobic zone. The system yielded mean total nitrogen removal percentages of 65 and 75% for recycle ratios (r) of 0.5 and 1.5, respectively, and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies were higher than 90%. When the pilot‐scale reactor was operated with an HRT of 12 h and r values of 1.5 and 3.0, its performance was similar to that observed in the bench‐scale unit (92% COD removal for r = 3.0). However, the nitrogen removal was lower (55% N removal for r = 3.0) due to problems with the hydrodynamics in the aerobic zone. The anaerobic–aerobic fixed‐bed reactor with recirculation of the liquid phase allows for concomitant carbon and nitrogen removal without adding an exogenous source of electron donors and without requiring any additional alkalinity supplementation.  相似文献

Performance-based design in earthquake engineering is a structural optimization problem that has, as the objective, the determination of design parameters for the minimization of total costs, while at the same time satisfying minimum reliability levels for the specifi ed performance criteria. Total costs include those for construction and structural damage repairs, those associated with non-structural components and the social costs of economic losses, injuries and fatalities. This paper presents a general framework to approach this problem, using a numerical optimization strategy and incorporating the use of neural networks for the evaluation of dynamic responses and the reliability levels achieved for a given set of design parameters. The strategy is applied to an example of a three-story offi ce building. The results show the importance of considering the social costs, and the optimum failure probabilities when minimum reliability constraints are not taken into account.  相似文献

Worldwide measures to restrict tributyltin (TBT) in antifouling paints have been legislated for decades, and were upgraded to a total ban on September 2008. With a view to test the response of coastal biota to changing pollution, since 1996 we have determined the concentration of TBT and derivatives di- and mono-butyltin (DBT and MBT) in NW Spain populations of two gastropods of contrasting biology, the rock-snail Nucella lapillus (n = 18) and the mud-snail Nassarius reticulatus (n = 24). TBT pollution in the study area has decreased consistently and considerably over time. In addition, the baseline butyltin (BT) bioaccumulation patterns showed a marked but transient distortion. These field observations are consistent with BT desorption from sediments, a natural phenomenon that is now to be expected in developing countries recently subject to the global TBT ban.  相似文献

This paper investigates the response of nonstructural components in the presence of nonlinear behavior of the primary structure using floor response spectra method (FRS). The effect of several parameters such as initial natural frequency of the primary structure, natural frequency of the nonstructural components (subsystem), strength reduction factor and hysteretic model have been studied. A database of 164 registered ground acceleration time histories from the European Strong-Motion Database is used. Results are presented in terms of amplification factor and resonance factor. Amplification factor quantifies the effect of inelastic deformations of the primary structure on subsystem response. Resonance factor quantifies the variation of the subsystem response considering the primary structure acceleration. Obtained results differed from precedent studies, particularly for higher primary structure periods. Values of amplification factor are improved. Obtained results of resonance factor highlight an underestimation of peak values according to current design codes such as Eurocode 8. Therefore a new formulation is proposed.  相似文献
