The rate at which, and the processes by which, a passive tracer is stirred and mixed in a turbulent mesoscale eddy field are examined for environmental parameters characteristic of a homogeneous mid-ocean region. The simulated, time-dependent eddy field is obtained by direct integration of the forced/damped barotropic vorticity equation; the dispersal of a spatially localized, instantaneous release of tracer (a “tracer spot”) within the evolving velocity field is subsequently computed from the advective-diffusive equation. An ensemble of 10 independent releases is used to determin the average spreading properties of the tracer spot.On an f-plane, the ensemble-averaged dispersal is approximately isotropic, and is associated with an effective diffusion rate substantially greater than that supported in the absence of turbulent advection. Quantitatively, the effective ensemble-averaged diffusivity is shown to be 0(UL), where U and L are characteristic velocity and length scales of the turbulent flow. This estimate is consistent with the traditional mixing length hypothesis. With the addition of β, the simulated flow field has substantial zonal anisotropy. Ensemble-averaged dispersal of tracer spots is similarly anisotropic, and the overall rate of tracer dispersal is substantially reduced over its f-plane value.Both with and without β, the initial rate at which maximum tracer concentration and total tracer variance decay are given by the approximate law exp[? αγt] where γ is the RMS rate of strain, and α is approximately constant at a value of 0.5. The heightened rate of variance loss over that associated with pure (subgridscale) diffusion is shown to be accommodated by the rapid transfer of tracer variance from the largest to the shortest scale tracer features, that is, by the rapid sharpening of tracer gradients by turbulent advection. We present 8.0–13.0 micron spectra (Δλλ = 0.02?0.03) for six main belt asteroids, which range from 58 to 220 km in diameter and sample the five principal taxonomic classes (C, S, M, R and E). Narrow, well-defined silicate emission features are present on two of the asteroids, the C-type 19 Fortuna and the M-type 21 Lutetia. No comparable emission features are observed on the S-types 11 Parthenope and 14 Irene, the R-type 349 Dembowska or the E-type 64 Angelina.  相似文献

We present spectrophotometry in the 27–41 μm spectral region for icy satellites of Saturn (Tethys, Dione, Rhea, Iapetus, and Hyperion) and Jupiter (Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto). The 3.6-μm reflectance peak characteristic of fine-grained water ice is observed prominently on the satellites of Saturn, faintly on the leading side of Europa, and not all on Ganymede, Callisto, or the dark side of Iapetus. The spectral reflectances of these icy satellites may be affected by their equilibrium surface temperatures and magnetospheric effects.  相似文献

Topographic shading curtails the period and complicates the geographic patterns of insolation in mountainous areas. Maps derived from oblique aerial photographs of shadow lines cast by the irregular, mountainous east horizon in Provo, Utah are used as a case study to illustrate an alternative to existing techniques of solar radiation data collection. For study areas of several hundred square kilometers, this method may be superior in resolution and at the same time more error free and economically feasible than other methods. Measurement of solar inputs received at sample stations scattered through the mapped area show that the phenomenon of topographically delayed sunrise has a distinct effect on daily totals of radiation in the manner suggested by the maps.  相似文献

At first sight, the regime suggested for archipelagos at UNCLOS seems to recognize to a large extent the concept of the archipelago as a single unit of islands and water. The author examines closely whether in fact the archipelagic states' view of their maritime jurisdiction has been upheld, or whether the negotiations have led to a position based on traditional concepts of law of the sea. The archipelago doctrine and interests underlying it, opposition to it, and the considerations by the international legal community are discussed. Finally, developments on archipelagos in the Seabed Committee and UNCLOS III are traced in order to understand the language of the proposed archipelagic regime.  相似文献

New spectra of Jupiter in the region 0.93–1.63 are presented. Laboratory comparisons of spectra of NH3 and CH4 permit estimates of the absorbing pathlength for various bands of these two gases. Abundances in a single transmission through the Jupiter atmosphere, above the mean reflecting level, vary from 10 to 100 m-atm for CH4 and from 0.2–5 m-atm for NH3, depending on the bands considered. Upper limits for other gases are derived from new laboratory spectra and comparison with the Jupiter spectra presented herein. These are as follows: C2H2<2 m-atm, H2S<0.25 m-atm, HCN<0.05 m-atm, CH3NH2<0.02 m-atm. A table summarizing the chemical composition of Jupiter's atmosphere is presented.  相似文献

The vertical mesoscale flux in the nocturnal boundary layer is generally considered to be difficult to estimate because of the small mesoscale vertical velocities and the large random variation of the mesoscale fluxes. However, the mesoscale vertical flux of heat, computed from FLOSSII data, varies quasi-systematically with height, stability and time scale. Such systematic variation requires correction for sonic misalignment and averaging over a large quantity of data. The relation of the mesoscale heat flux to the vertical structure of the nocturnal boundary layer is examined. For the most common conditions, the vertical convergence of the mesoscale heat flux acts to reduce the nocturnal cooling rate. Important uncertainties are discussed as well as the need for improved observations.  相似文献

UVIS occultation data show clumping in Saturn’s F ring and at the B ring outer edge, indicating aggregation and disaggregation at these locations that are perturbed by Prometheus and by Mimas. The inferred timescales range from hours to months. Occultation profiles of the edge show wide variability, indicating perturbations by local mass aggregations. Structure near the B ring edge is seen in power spectral analysis at scales 200–2000 m. Similar structure is also seen at the strongest density waves, with significance increasing with resonance strength. For the B ring outer edge, the strongest structure is seen at longitudes 90° and 270° relative to Mimas. This indicates a direct relation between the moon and the ring clumping. We propose that the collective behavior of the ring particles resembles a predator–prey system: the mean aggregate size is the prey, which feeds the velocity dispersion; conversely, increasing dispersion breaks up the aggregates. Moons may trigger clumping by streamline crowding, which reduces the relative velocity, leading to more aggregation and more clumping. Disaggregation may follow from disruptive collisions or tidal shedding as the clumps stir the relative velocity. For realistic values of the parameters this yields a limit cycle behavior, as for the ecology of foxes and hares or the “boom-bust” economic cycle. Solving for the long-term behavior of this forced system gives a periodic response at the perturbing frequency, with a phase lag roughly consistent with the UVIS occultation measurements. We conclude that the agitation by the moons in the F ring and at the B ring outer edge drives aggregation and disaggregation in the forcing frame. This agitation of the ring material may also allow fortuitous formation of solid objects from the temporary clumps, via stochastic processes like compaction, adhesion, sintering or reorganization that drives the denser parts of the aggregate to the center or ejects the lighter elements. Any of these more persistent objects would then orbit at the Kepler rate. We would also expect the formation of clumps and some more permanent objects at the other perturbed regions in the rings… including satellite resonances, shepherded ring edges, and near embedded objects like Pan and Daphnis (where the aggregation/disaggregation cycles are forced similar to Prometheus forcing of the F ring).  相似文献

Cassini UVIS star occultations by the F ring detect 13 events ranging from 27 m to 9 km in width. We interpret these structures as likely temporary aggregations of multiple smaller objects, which result from the balance between fragmentation and accretion processes. One of these features was simultaneously observed by VIMS. There is evidence that this feature is elongated in azimuth. Some features show sharp edges. At least one F ring object is opaque and may be a “moonlet.” This possible moonlet provides evidence for larger objects embedded in Saturn's F ring, which were predicted as the sources of the F ring material by Cuzzi and Burns [Cuzzi, J.N., Burns, J.A., 1988. Icarus 74, 284-324], and as an outcome of tidally modified accretion by Barbara and Esposito [Barbara, J.M., Esposito, L.W., 2002. Icarus 160, 161-171]. We see too few events to confirm the bi-modal distribution which Barbara and Esposito [Barbara, J.M., Esposito, L.W., 2002. Icarus 160, 161-171] predict. These F ring structures and other youthful features detected by Cassini may result from ongoing destruction of small parent bodies in the rings and subsequent aggregation of the fragments. If so, the temporary aggregates are 10 times more abundant than the solid objects. If recycling by re-accretion is significant, the rings could be quite ancient, and likely to persist far into the future.  相似文献
