The oil sands industry has committed to returning the mine sites to a productive condition. The reconstructed soil covers must have sufficient available water holding capacity (AWHC) to supply enough moisture over the growing season, to promote vegetation. In order to assess the sustainability of various soil cover alternatives, a generic, system dynamic watershed model entitled GSDW was used along with the available historical meteorological records to estimate the maximum soil moisture deficit and annual evapotranspiration fluxes. A probabilistic framework was adopted; consequently, frequency curves of the maximum annual moisture deficit values are constructed and used to assess the probability that various reconstructed and natural watersheds can provide the associated moisture demands. In general, the study showed a tendency for the reconstructed watershed to provide less moisture for evapotranspiration than natural systems. Watersheds of various soil types, layering, thicknesses and topography were studied. The gained knowledge was used to predict the possible performance of a hypothetical reclamation cover. The results indicated that the hypothetical cover performed in a similar manner to the thickest existing soil cover which confirmed a high probability of that cover to survive under the same existing climatic conditions. Moreover, this probabilistic framework was found to be useful for integrating information gained from natural watersheds (e.g. the canopy of mature natural systems and transfer the results to the reconstructed system). The results show that the canopy influenced the moisture deficit regime positively which signifies a greater possibility that reconstructed covers will adapt to vegetation type. In brief, the adopted approach enables better understanding of the response of reconstructed systems via multiple simulations of ‘what‐if’ scenarios using different soil/vegetation alternatives. We evaluated sources and pathways of groundwater recharge for a heterogeneous alluvial aquifer beneath an agricultural field, based on multi‐level monitoring of hydrochemistry and environmental isotopes of a riverside groundwater system at Buyeo, Korea. Two distinct groundwater zones were identified with depth: (1) a shallow oxic groundwater zone, characterized by elevated concentrations of NO3? and (2) a deeper (>10–14 m from the ground surface) sub‐oxic groundwater zone with high concentrations of dissolved Fe, silica, and HCO3?, but little nitrate. The change of redox zones occurred at a depth where the aquifer sediments change from an upper sandy stratum to a silty stratum with mud caps. The δ18O and δ2H values of groundwater were also different between the two zones. Hydrochemical and δ18O? δ2H data of oxic groundwater are similar to those of soil water. This illustrates that recharge of oxic groundwater mainly occurs through direct infiltration of rain and irrigation water in the sandy soil area where vegetable cropping with abundant fertilizer use is predominant. Oxic groundwater is therefore severely contaminated by agrochemical pollutants such as nitrate. In contrast, deeper sub‐oxic groundwater contains only small amounts of dissolved oxygen (DO) and NO3?. The 3H contents and elevated silica concentrations in sub‐oxic groundwater indicate a somewhat longer mean residence time of groundwater within this part of the aquifer. Sub‐oxic groundwater was also characterized by higher δ18O and δ2H values and lower d‐excess values, indicating significant evaporation during recharge. We suggest that recharge of sub‐oxic groundwater occurs in the areas of paddy rice fields where standing irrigation and rain water are affected by strong evaporation, and that reducing conditions develop during subsequent sub‐surface infiltration. The climate sensitive analysis of potential climate change on streamflow has been conducted using a hydrologic model to identify hydrologic variability associated with climate scenarios as a function of perturbed climatic variables (e.g. carbon dioxide, temperature, and precipitation). The interannual variation of water resources availability as well as low flow frequency driven by monsoonal time shifts have been investigated to evaluate the likelihood of droughts in a changing climate. The results show that the timing shift of the monsoon window associated with future climate scenarios clearly affect annual water yield change of ? 12 and ? 8% corresponding to 1‐month earlier and 1‐month later monsoon windows, respectively. Also, a more severe low flow condition has been predicted at 0·03 m3/s as opposed to the historic 7Q10 flow of 1·54 m3/s given at extreme climate scenarios. With the increase in the number of applications using digital vector maps and the development of surveying techniques, a large volume of GIS (geographic information system) vector maps having high accuracy and precision is being produced. However, to achieve their effective transmission while preserving their high positional quality, these large amounts of vector map data need to be compressed. This paper presents a compression method based on a bin space partitioning data structure, which preserves a high-level accuracy and exact precision of spatial data. To achieve this, the proposed method a priori divides a map into rectangular local regions and classifies the bits of each object in the local regions to three types of bins, defined as category bin (CB), direction bin (DB), and accuracy bin (AB). Then, it encodes objects progressively using the properties of the classified bins, such as adjacency and orientation, to obtain the optimum compression ratio. Experimental results verify that our method can encode vector map data constituting less than 20% of the original map data at a 1-cm accuracy degree and that constituting less than 9% at a 1-m accuracy degree. In addition, its compression efficiency is greater than that of previous methods, whereas its complexity is lower for close to real-time applications.  相似文献

To determine the optimal storage method and longest possible storage period of Phyllospadix japonicus seeds, we examined post-storage germination rates using different storage methods and periods for P. japonicus seeds harvested in Korean coastal waters. P. japonicus seeds are classified as recalcitrant seeds with an average moisture content of 45.4%. Germination rates of P. japonicus seeds stored in seawater at 4 °C, seawater at room temperature with air supply, and an aquarium with continuous seawater circulation ranged from 35.0% to 43.5%, whereas seeds stored in seawater at 30°C, a refrigerator at ?20°C, and a desiccator at room temperature did not germinate. Seeds stored at 4°C maintained germination rates of 72.5~73.0% until 30 days of storage, but showed rapidly decreasing germination rates after 60 days and no germination after 180 days. Since few studies have investigated seed storage of P. japonicus, these results will serve as useful data for seed-based P. japonicus habitat restoration.  相似文献

Leading climate analysts are designing a set of new policy scenarios that will be used to frame future climate policy analyses. This new exercise seeks to improve the realism of the scenarios used in climate policy analysis. In recent decades, rational choice institutionalism (RCI) has increasingly influenced several social sciences. A systematic effort to apply findings and concepts borrowed from RCI studies would offer three types of benefits to this scenario exercise. First, it would increase internal consistency within each of the projected scenarios. Second, it would enhance the realism of the entire suite of scenarios. Third, it would illuminate a range of factors, trends, and causal pathways than might otherwise be considered. These gains could be exploited best by engaging some leading RCI scholars in the scenario building process.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of trace metals in sediment cores was investigated to evaluate the extent and the historical record of metal pollution over 30 years in the artificial Lake Shihwa in Korea. A marked increase of trace metals after 1980 was observed due to the operation of two large industrial complexes and dike construction for a reclamation project. There was a decreasing trend of metal concentrations with the distance from the pollution source. The enrichment factor and pollution load index of the metals indicated that the metal pollution was mainly derived from Cu, Zn and Cd loads due to anthropogenic activities. The concentrations of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As and Pb in the upper part of all core sediments exceeded the ERL criteria of NOAA. Our results indicate that inadequate planning and management of industrialization and a large reclamation project accomplished by dike construction have continued to strongly accelerate metal pollution in Lake Shihwa.  相似文献
