In coastal areas, offshore wave propagation towards the shore is influenced by water depth variations, due to sea bed bathymetry, tides and surges. Considering implications of climate change both on atmospheric forcing and sea level rise, a simple methodology involving numerical modelling is implemented to compute inshore waves from 1960 to 2099. Simulations take into account five scenarios of linear sea level rise and one climatic scenario for storm surges and offshore waves. The methodology is applied to the East Anglia coast (UK). Extreme event analysis is performed to estimate climate change implication on inshore waves and the occurrence of extreme events. It is shown, for this coastal region, that wave statistics are sensitive to the trend in sea level rise, and that the climate change scenario leads to a significant increase of extreme wave heights in the northern part of the domain. For nearshore points, the increase of the mean sea level alters not only extreme wave heights but also the frequency of occurrence of extreme wave conditions. 相似文献

Marabasco is a tropical river-estuary system comprising the Marabasco river and the Barra de Navidad Lagoon. The river is impacted by the Pe?a Colorada iron mine, which produces 3.5 million tons of pellets per year. Thirteen surface sediment samples were collected in May 2005 (dry season) in order to establish background levels of Al, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, and Zn in the system and to ascertain the potential mobility of metals in the sediments. Analyses were carried out in the fraction finer than 63 microm, and labile metals extracted according the BCR procedure. Certified reference materials were used for validation of methods. Total concentrations of Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn were in the range of 0.05-0.34, 6-95, 0.7-31, 9-26, 2-18, and 53-179 mgkg(-1), respectively; Al and Fe ranges of 24-127, and 26-69 mgg(-1) correspondingly. Cadmium was found to be significantly labile in the sediments (20-100%), followed by Co (0-35%), Ni (3-16%) and Zn (0-25%), whereas the labile fraction for Cu, Fe and Pb was almost negligible (<4%). According with the total metal concentrations, background levels and normalised enrichment factors (NEF) of the metals studied, the impact of the Pe?a Colorada iron mine on the Marabasco system is lower than expected when compared with other similar World systems influenced by mining activities. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine peat formation processes throughout the millennia in four tidal marshes in the
Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta. Peat cores collected at each site were analyzed for bulk density, loss on ignition, and percent
organic carbon. Core data and spline fit age–depth models were used to estimate inorganic sedimentation, organic accumulation,
and carbon sequestration rates in the marshes. Bulk density and percent organic matter content of peat fluctuated through
time at all sites, suggesting that peat formation processes are dynamic and responsive to watershed conditions. The balance
between inorganic sedimentation and organic accumulation at the sites also varied through time, indicating that marshes may
rely more strongly on either inorganic or organic matter for peat formation at particular times in their existence. Mean carbon
sequestration rates found in this study (0.38–0.79 Mg C ha−1 year−1) were similar to other long-term estimates for temperate peatlands. 相似文献

The recently developed Morphological Acceleration Factor (MORFAC) approach for morphodynamic upscaling enables numerical model simulations of coastal evolution at decadal to millennial time scales. Primarily due to the massive increase in modeling time scales it affords, the MORFAC approach is now standard in state-of-the-art commercially available coastal morphodynamic modeling suites. However, the general validity of the MORFAC concept for coastal applications has not yet been comprehensively investigated. Furthermore, a robust and objective method (as opposed to the subjective and inelegant trial and error method) for the a priori determination of the highest MORFAC that is suitable for a given simulation (i.e. critical MORFAC) does not currently exist. This communication presents some initial results of an ongoing, long-term study that attempts to rigorously and methodically investigate the limitations and strengths of the MORFAC approach. Based on the results of a strategically designed numerical modeling exercise using the morphodynamic model Delft3D, two main outcomes are presented. First, the main dependencies and sensitivities of the MORFAC approach to fundamental forcing conditions and model parameters are elucidated. Second, a criterion based on the Courant–Friedrichs–Levy (CFL) condition for bed form propagation that maybe used as a guide to determine the critical MORFAC a priori is proposed. 相似文献

We present new observations at three frequencies (326, 615 and 1281 MHz) of the radio lobe spiral galaxy, NGC 3079, using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. These observations are consistent with previous data obtained at other telescopes and reveal the structure of the nuclear radio lobes in exquisite detail. In addition, new features are observed, some with H i counterparts, showing broad-scale radio continuum emission and extensions. The galaxy is surrounded by a radio halo that is at least 4.8 kpc in height. Two giant radio extensions/loops are seen on either side of the galaxy out to ∼11 kpc from the major axis, only slightly offset from the direction of the smaller nuclear radio lobes. If these are associated with the nuclear outflow, then the galaxy has experienced episodic nuclear activity. Emission along the southern major axis suggests motion through a local intergalactic medium (not yet detected), and it may be that NGC 3079 is itself creating this local intergalactic gas via outflows. We also present maps of the minimum energy parameters for this galaxy, including cosmic ray energy density, electron diffusion length, magnetic field strength, particle lifetime and power. 相似文献

Directional wave measurements have been made in Liverpool Bay by means of wave buoys and acoustic instruments within the footprint
of a phased-array high frequency (HF) radar system, which measures currents and waves. Several years of data have now been
collected and are supplemented by an 11-year wave model hindcast. Wave parameters have been derived from the various instruments
and compared: the directional waverider buoy is taken to provide the ground truth, confirming the good observations obtained
from the ADCP; the HF radar wave data have a positive bias, while the model data have a negative bias. The variation of wave
climate over various time-scales from seasonal and inter-annual to inter-decadal is examined. Significant wave–current interactions
may occur in this area of shallow water and high tidal range and the measurements provide a good test of coupled hydrodynamic-wave
models. The waves are mainly fetch-limited: largest events are due to depressions, which track across the UK from SW, generating
westerly and WNW winds in the right rear quadrant. Hence, the future extreme wave events will be closely related to future
North Atlantic storm tracks. Projections of 50-year return period wave heights differ between different instruments and model
datasets. The future wave climate of Liverpool Bay is not expected to change much from the present day; although a slight
increase in the severity of the most extreme events is projected, the frequency of extreme wind and wave events in general
is slightly reduced. There is evidence for variability on decadal time-scales, with some correlation with the North Atlantic

A model was developed to predict the modification with fetch in offshore flow of mixing ratio, air–water exchange flux, and
near-surface vertical gradients in mixing ratio of a scalar due to air–water exchange. The model was developed for planning
and interpretation of air–water exchange flux measurements in the coastal zone. The Lagrangian model applies a mass balance
over the internal boundary layer (IBL) using the integral depth scale approach, previously applied to development of the nocturnal
boundary layer overland. Surface fluxes and vertical profiles in the surface layer were calculated using the NOAA COARE bulk
algorithm and gas transfer model (e.g., Blomquist et al. 2006, Geophys Res Lett 33:1–4). IBL height was assumed proportional to the square root of fetch, and estimates of the IBL growth
rate coefficient, α, were obtained by three methods: (1) calibration of the model to a large dataset of air temperature and humidity modification
over Lake Ontario in 1973, (2) atmospheric soundings from the 2004 New England Air Quality Study and (3) solution of a simplified
diffusion equation and an estimate of eddy diffusivity from Monin–Obukhov similarity theory (MOST). Reasonable agreement was
obtained between the calibrated and MOST values of α for stable, neutral, and unstable conditions, and estimates of α agreed with previously published parametrizations that were valid for the stable IBL only. The parametrization of α provides estimates of IBL height, and the model estimates modification of scalar mixing ratio, fluxes, and near-surface gradients,
under conditions of coastal offshore flow (0–50 km) over a wide range in stability. 相似文献

Widespread use of social media during crises has become commonplace, as shown by the volume of messages during the Haiti earthquake of 2010 and Japan tsunami of 2011. Location mentions are particularly important in disaster messages as they can show emergency responders where problems have occurred. This article explores the sorts of locations that occur in disaster‐related social messages, how well off‐the‐shelf software identifies those locations, and what is needed to improve automated location identification, called geo‐parsing. To do this, we have sampled Twitter messages from the February 2011 earthquake in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand. We annotated locations in messages manually to make a gold standard by which to measure locations identified by a Named Entity Recognition software. The Stanford NER software found some locations that were proper nouns, but did not identify locations that were not capitalized, local streets and buildings, or non‐standard place abbreviations and mis‐spellings that are plentiful in microtext. We review how these problems might be solved in software research, and model a readable crisis map that shows crisis location clusters via enlarged place labels. 相似文献
