??The proper management of solid waste (SW) is a global environmental challenge. A major issue is the proper disposal of SW while balancing a wide range of criteria and working with different spatial data. In this study, we used geographic information system as a tool to perform multi-criteria decision analysis with an analytical hierarchy process to develop an environmental impact susceptibility model (EISM) for landfills. The model was applied to the state of California, USA and results are presented herein. In particular, the EISM considers factors such as geology, pedology, geomorphology, water resources, and climate as represented by 13 associated environmental indicators. The results of the EISM indicate that more than 75% of California’s territory is situated in areas with very low, low, and medium environmental impact susceptibility categories. However, in the remaining 25% of the state’s land, 61 landfills are located in the high and very high categories. These results are alarming because during the period from 2000 to 2015, these 61 landfills received approximately 308 million tons of SW, which corresponds to more than 57% of all SW disposed in California. The model results can be used toward mitigating the environmental impacts of these facilities. 相似文献

Measurements of soil moisture are important for studies of climate and weather forecasting, flood prediction, and aquifer
recharge studies. Although soil moisture measurement networks exist, most are sparsely distributed and lack standardized instrumentation.
Measurements of soil moisture from satellites have extremely large spatial footprints (40–60 km). A methodology is described
here that uses existing networks of continuously-operating GPS receivers to measure soil moisture fluctuations. In this technique,
incoming signals are reflected off and attenuated by the ground before reception by the GPS receiver. These multipath reflections
directly affect signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) data routinely collected by GPS receivers, creating amplitude variations that
are a function of ground reflectivity and therefore soil moisture content. After describing this technique, multipath reflection
amplitudes at a GPS site in Tashkent, Uzbekistan are compared to estimates of soil moisture from the Noah land surface model.
Although the GPS multipath amplitudes and the land surface model are uncalibrated, over the 70-day period studied, they both
rise sharply following each rainfall event and slowly decrease over a period of ∼10 days. 相似文献

High-dimensional image data open new possibilities in remote sensing digital image classification, particularly when dealing with classes that are spectrally very similar. The main problem refers to the estimation of a large number of classifier's parameters. One possible solution to this problem consists in reducing the dimensionality of the original data without a significant loss of information. In this letter, a new approach to reduce data dimensionality is proposed. In the proposed methodology, each pixel's curve of spectral response is initially segmented, and the digital numbers (DNs) at each segment are replaced by a smaller number of statistics. In this letter, the proposed statistics are the mean and variance of the segment's DNs, which are supposed to carry information about the segment's position and shape, respectively. Tests were performed by using Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer hyperspectral image data. Multipath error is considered one of the major errors affecting GPS observations. One can benefit from the repetition of satellite
geometry approximately every sidereal day, and apply filtering to help minimize this error. For GPS data at 1 s interval processed
using a double-difference strategy, using the day-to-day coordinate or carrier-phase residual autocorrelation determined with
a 10-h window leads to the steadiest estimates of the error-repeat lag, although a window as short as 2 h can produce an acceptable
value with > 97% of the optimal lag’s correlation. We conclude that although the lag may vary with time, such variation is
marginal and there is little advantage in using a satellite-specific or other time-varying lag in double-difference processing.
We filter the GPS data either by stacking a number of days of processed coordinate residuals using the optimum “sidereal”
lag (23 h 55 m 54 s), and removing these stacked residuals from the day in question (coordinate space), or by a similar method
using double-difference carrier-phase residuals (observational space). Either method results in more consistent and homogeneous
set of coordinates throughout the dataset compared with unfiltered processing. Coordinate stacking reduces geometry-related
repeating errors (mainly multipath) better than carrier-phase residual stacking, although the latter takes less processing
time to achieve final filtered coordinates. Thus, the optimal stacking method will depend on whether coordinate precision

Tomographic 4D reconstructions of ionospheric anomalies appearing in the high-latitude polar cap region are compared with
plasma density measurements by digital ionosonde located near the north magnetic pole at Eureka station and with in situ plasma
measurements on-board DMSP spacecraft. The moderate magnetic storm of 14–17 October 2002 is taken as an example of a geomagnetic
disturbance which generates large-scale ionospheric plasma anomalies at mid-latitudes and in the polar cap region. Comparison
of the GPS tomographic reconstructions over Eureka station with the ionosonde measurements of the F layer peak densities indicates
that the GPS tomography correctly predicts the time of arrival and passage of the ionospheric tongue of ionization over the
magnetic pole area, although the tomographic technique appears to under-estimate the value of F peak plasma density. Comparison
with the in situ plasma measurements by the DMSP SSIES instruments shows that the GPS tomography correctly reproduces the
large-scale spatial structure of ionospheric anomalies over a wide range of latitudes from mid-latitudes to the high-latitude
polar cap region, though the tomographic reconstructions tend to over-estimate the density of the topside ionosphere at 840 km
DMSP orbit. This study is essential for understanding the quality and limitations of the tomographic reconstruction techniques,
particularly in high-latitude regions where GPS TEC measurements and other ionospheric data sources are limited. 相似文献

Multi‐criteria evaluation (MCE) and decision‐making are increasingly combined with interactive tools to assist users with visual thinking and exploring decision strategies. The interactive control of criterion combination rules and the simultaneous observation of geographic space and criterion space provide a means of investigating the sensitivity of the decision outcome to the decision‐maker's preferences. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is an MCE method that has been successfully implemented in management processes including those addressed by Geographic Information Systems. In this paper, we present a map‐based, interactive AHP implementation, which provides a link between a well‐understood decision support method and exploratory geographic visualization. Using a case study with public health data for the Province of Ontario, Canada, we demonstrate that exploratory map use increases the effectiveness of the AHP‐based evaluation of population health. 相似文献

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) 16-day composite data product (MOD12Q) was used to develop annual cropland and crop-specific map products (corn, soybeans, and wheat) for the Laurentian Great Lakes Basin (GLB). The crop area distributions and changes in crop rotations were characterized by comparing annual crop map products for 2005, 2006, and 2007. The total acreages for corn and soybeans were relatively balanced for calendar years 2005 (31,462 km2 and 31,283 km2, respectively) and 2006 (30,766 km2 and 30,972 km2, respectively). Conversely, corn acreage increased approximately 21% from 2006 to 2007, while soybean and wheat acreage decreased approximately 9% and 21%, respectively. Two-year crop rotational change analyses were conducted for the 2005–2006 and 2006–2007 time periods. The large increase in corn acreages for 2007 introduced crop rotation changes across the GLB. Compared to 2005–2006, crop rotation patterns for 2006–2007 resulted in increased corn–corn, soybean–corn, and wheat–corn rotations. The increased corn acreages could have potential negative impacts on nutrient loadings, pesticide exposures, and sediment-mediated habitat degradation. Increased in US corn acreages in 2007 were related to new biofuel mandates, while Canadian increases were attributed to higher world-wide corn prices. Additional study is needed to determine the potential impacts of increases in corn-based ethanol agricultural production on watershed ecosystems and receiving waters. 相似文献
