We present time series of January–May mean mesosphere/lower thermosphere (MLT) mean winds and planetary wave (PW) proxies over Europe together with stratospheric stationary planetary waves (SPW) at 50°N and time series of European ozone laminae occurrence. The MLT winds are connected with stratospheric PW and laminae at time scales of several years to decades. There is a tendency for increased wave activity after 1990, together with more ozone laminae and stronger MLT zonal winds. However, possible coupling processes are not straightforward. While mean MLT winds before the 1990s show similar interannual variations than stratospheric PW at 100 hPa, later a tendency towards a connection of the MLT with the middle stratosphere SPW is registered. There is also a tendency for a change in the correlation between lower and middle stratosphere SPW, indicating that coupling processes involving the European middle atmosphere from the lower stratosphere to the mesopause region have changed. 相似文献

Recent analysis of the long-term behavior of different geophysical data has demonstrated that trend parameters can change during a period of observation. Sophisticated general methods for an objective analysis of structural changes in linear trends have been developed during the last 10 years. Such methods are applied for an analysis of changes in trend parameters of the mesosphere/lower thermosphere wind observed over Obninsk (55°N, 37°E) from 1964 to 2007 and Collm (52°N, 15°E) from 1979 to 2008, respectively. We found that trend models with breakpoints are generally preferred against straight lines. At Obninsk, there are break-years in trends of the winter prevailing winds close to 1977, when a climatic regime shift was observed. The break-years in trends of the semidiurnal tides for both stations are close to years of possible changes in stratospheric ozone. Correlations of the Obninsk and Collm winds with atmospheric indices are also considered. 相似文献

In underground repository concepts for radioactive waste, bentonite is studied as a reference swelling material to be used as an engineered barrier. Under the changing geochemical conditions prevailing within the barrier (saturation with the fluid coming from the host formation, diffusion of various chemical plumes caused by the degradation of some constituents of the barrier-system, etc.), the surface chemistry of the clay particles could evolve. This work aims to characterize the effects of these changes on (i) the microstructure of compacted bentonite samples and (ii) the diffusion properties of HTO and Na in these samples.For this purpose, bentonite sets were equilibrated with different solutions: NaCl, CaCl2, CsCl solutions as well as an artificial clayey porewater solution. The microstructure of the different samples was characterized by HRTEM and XRD, in a water saturated state. In parallel, effective diffusion coefficients of both HTO and 22Na were measured for the different samples. The density of the bentonite in the diffusion tests and in the HRTEM observations was set at 1.6 Mg m−3.From the microstructural observations and the results of diffusion tests, it is deduced that one key parameter is the occurrence of a gel phase in the material, which is found to depend strongly on the bentonite set: the gel phase dominates in Na-bentonite, while it is lacking in Cs-bentonite. The HTO diffusion coefficients are found to be lower in the samples with high gel phase content. Sodium diffusion does not follow the same trend: when compared with HTO, Na diffuses faster when the gel phase content is high. The latter result could indicate that the “accelerated diffusion mechanism” of cations, already mentioned in the literature, is enhanced in clayey materials that contain a gel phase. 相似文献

We study the ratio between the gravity variation and vertical displacement on the surface of a self-gravitating earth model when a surface load is applied. We adopt a theoretical and numerical point of view, excluding any observations. First, we investigate the spectral behavior of the ratio of the harmonic components of the gravity variation and vertical displacement. Then, we model the gravity-to-height ratio for different surface loads (continental hydrology, atmospheric pressure, ocean tides) using outputs of global numerical models in order to relate the predicted spatial values to theoretical mean values deduced from the spectral domain. For locations inside loaded areas, the ratio is highly variable because of the Newtonian attraction of the local masses and depends on the size of the load. For the hydrological loading (soil moisture and snow), the mean ratio over the continents is ?0.87 μGal mm?1, but increases with decreasing size of the river basins. For the atmospheric loading, assuming an inverted-barometer response of the ocean, the ratio is positive, with larger values for high latitudes (0.49 μGal mm?1)—particularly on the coasts—than for lower latitudes (0.30 μGal mm?1). The ratio, however, is much less variable outside the loaded areas: in desert areas such as the Sahara and Arabia, its mean value is ?0.28 μGal mm?1. For the ocean tidal loading, we find a mean ratio of ?0.26 μGal mm?1 over the continents for the diurnal tidal waves. Runoff components of the Zastler catchment (18\4 km2, southern Black Forest, Germany) were analysed with hydrograph separations using stable oxygen isotopes and dissolved silica. It was shown that event water and components with low silica contributed only small amounts to total runoff. In addition, comparison of the two‐component hydrograph separations showed that the low‐silica components are generated by both event water and pre‐event water fractions, depending on the state of the system. A modified three‐component hydrograph separation method was introduced using dissolved silica and 18O. During storm events an interaction of three runoff components having distinct silica concentrations could be shown. Based on the geological and geomorphological genesis of the study site, it was appropriate to assign (i) the low silica component to the riparian zones and impermeable areas, (ii) the medium silica component to the periglacial debris cover and (iii) the high silica component to the crystalline detritus and crystalline hard rock. Exact quantification of the runoff components remained difficult. However, runoff components with medium silica concentrations reacted very sensitively and intensely. The contribution of this component to total runoff is comparatively large. This shows the important role of the periglacial debris to runoff generation of the study site and emphasizes the importance of runoff generation processes occurring in this reservoir. A groundwater recharge process of heterogeneous hard rock aquifer in the Moole Hole experimental watershed, south India, is being studied to understand the groundwater flow behaviour. Significant seasonal variations in groundwater level are observed in boreholes located at the outlet area indicating that the recharge process is probably taking place below intermittent streams. In order to localize groundwater recharge zones and to optimize implementation of boreholes, a geophysical survey was carried out during and after the 2004 monsoon across the outlet zone. Magnetic resonance soundings (MRS) have been performed to characterize the aquifer and measure groundwater level depletion. The results of MRS are consistent with the observation in boreholes, but it suffers from degraded lateral resolution. A better resolution of the regolith/bedrock interface is achieved using electrical resistivity tomography (ERT). ERT results are confirmed by resistivity logging in the boreholes. ERT surveys have been carried out twice—before and during the monsoon—across the stream area. The major feature of recharge is revealed below the stream with a decrease by 80% of the calculated resistivity. The time‐lapse ERT also shows unexpected variations at a depth of 20 m below the slopes that could have been interpreted as a consequence of a deep seasonal water flow. However, in this area time‐lapse ERT does not match with borehole data. Numerical modelling shows that in the presence of a shallow water infiltration, an inversion artefact may take place thus limiting the reliability of time‐lapse ERT. A combination of ERT with MRS provides valuable information on structure and aquifer properties respectively, giving a clue for a conceptual model of the recharge process: infiltration takes place in the conductive fractured‐fissured part of the bedrock underlying the stream and clayey material present on both sides slows down its lateral dissipation. Complete data set of earthquakes in Turkey and the adjacent areas has been used in order to compute the ω values in 24 seismic
regions of Turkey. The parameter is obtained through Gumbel’s third asymptotic distribution of extreme values and is well
known as upper bound magnitude. This is an interpretation that no earthquake magnitude greater than ω can occur in a region. The results also estimate the
most probable magnitude for a time period of 100 years. The estimates of ω exceed the value of 7.00 in 20 of the 24 seismic
regions. An effort is also made to find a relation between the magnitude and the length of a fault in the complicated tectonics

In the aftermath of the 26 December, 2004 tsunami, several quantitative predictions of inundation for historic events were presented at international meetings differing substantially from the corresponding well-established paleotsunami measurements. These significant differences attracted press attention, reducing the credibility of all inundation modeling efforts. Without exception, the predictions were made using models that had not been benchmarked. Since an increasing number of nations are now developing tsunami mitigation plans, it is essential that all numerical models used in emergency planning be subjected to validation—the process of ensuring that the model accurately solves the parent equations of motion—and verification—the process of ensuring that the model represents geophysical reality. Here, we discuss analytical, laboratory, and field benchmark tests with which tsunami numerical models can be validated and verified. This is a continuous process; even proven models must be subjected to additional testing as new knowledge and data are acquired. To date, only a few existing numerical models have met current standards, and these models remain the only choice for use for real-world forecasts, whether short-term or long-term. Short-term forecasts involve data assimilation to improve forecast system robustness and this requires additional benchmarks, also discussed here. This painstaking process may appear onerous, but it is the only defensible methodology when human lives are at stake. Model standards and procedures as described here have been adopted for implementation in the U.S. tsunami forecasting system under development by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, they are being adopted by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission of the U.S. and by the appropriate subcommittees of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO. 相似文献
