Geochemical data from back-arc volcanic zones in the Manus Basinare used to define five magma types. Closest to the New Britainarc are medium-K lavas of the island arc association and back-arcbasin basalts (BABB). Mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB), BABB andmildly enriched T-MORB (transitional MORB) occur along the ManusSpreading Center (MSC) and Extensional Transform Zone (ETZ).The MSC also erupted extreme back-arc basin basalts (XBABB),enriched in light rare earth elements, P, and Zr. Compared withnormal MORB, Manus MORB are even more depleted in high fieldstrength elements and slightly enriched in fluid-mobile elements,indicating slight, prior enrichment of their source with subduction-relatedcomponents. Chemical variations and modeling suggest systematic,coupled relationships between extent of mantle melting, priordepletion of the mantle source, and enrichment in subduction-relatedcomponents. Closest to the arc, the greatest addition of subduction-relatedcomponents has occurred in the mantle with the greatest amountof prior depletion, which has melted the most. Variations inK2O/H2O indicate that the subduction-related component is bestdescribed as a phlogopite and/or K-amphibole-bearing hybridizedperidotite. Magmas from the East Manus Rifts are enriched inNa and Zr with radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr, possibly indicating crustalinteraction in a zone of incipient rifting. Abstract— Reflectance spectra of splits 92 and 271 from the Martian meteorite Allan Hills (ALH) 84001 are presented and analyzed in this paper. Although the visible and infrared spectra of both chips show that the dominant mineralogy is low-Ca pyroxene, the focus here is on identification of the minor constituents. Infrared spectra measured at multiple spots along the surface of chips 92 and 271 show subtle spectroscopic variations due to changes in the low-Ca pyroxene texture and composition and to the presence of secondary minerals. Absorption bands observed near 0.93 and 1.95 μm are characteristic of low-Ca pyroxene. Strong mid-infrared reststrahlen bands are observed near 9 and 19.5 μm in all surface spectra, and additional bands near 7, 10.5, 11.4, 17.8, 20.5 and 23 μm are variable depending on the low-Ca pyroxene texture and the presence of secondary minerals. Selected spectra exhibit carbonate features near 4, 6.4–7.1 and 11.3 μm. Detailed analysis of these carbonate features indicates the presence of Mg-Fe carbonate, which is consistent with petrographic studies. Many of these spectra with strong carbonate features exhibit a magnetite feature near 17.9 μm and a shoulder near 20.5 μm that cannot be uniquely ascribed to one mineral. Spectroscopic identification of the minor carbonate and magnetite minerals in this probable piece of Mars indicates that detection of small amounts of these minerals of possible biological significance will be possible using infrared hyperspectral analyses of the Martian surface. Also of importance for remote sensing on Mars is the result that Mg, Fe and Mg-Fe carbonates in a low-Ca pyroxene matrix should be distinguishable from one another in the spectral region measured by the thermal emmitance spectrometer (TES).  相似文献

Abstract— Two types of mesostasis coexist within some porphyritic chondrules in Tieschitz. One type is smooth. The other, confined to chondrule margins, is blocky on a 5–10 μm scale. Mesostases in one porphyritic olivine-pyroxene (POP) chondrule and one porphyritic olivine (PO) chondrule were analysed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDS), as was white matrix nearby. Mesostases in the PO chondrule and in four others were analysed by ion probe. Pyroxene phenocrysts or dendrites extend across contacts between smooth and blocky mesostasis with no compositional change. Relative to smooth mesostasis, blocky mesostasis is enriched in Al, alkalis, Ba, F, and Cl but depleted in Si, Fe, and Ca. White matrix fills channels between the chondrules. It is physically and chemically similar to blocky mesostasis, but three ion probe analyses indicate that, unlike the mesostases, it is poor in Sc and has variable and fractionated rare earth elements (REEs). Smooth mesostasis is interpreted as solidified primary chondrule liquid; whereas blocky mesostasis is its alteration product or, less likely, a precipitate replacing smooth mesostasis leached out by aqueous fluid. White matrix may have formed by secondary alteration or replacement of mesostases that had been expelled from chondrules during accretion, or as a precipitate filling interchondrule voids. Iron may have been lost from the bulk meteorite, but most other elements merely underwent internal redistribution. Disturbed isotopic systems indicate that aqueous fluid may have been active on the Tieschitz parent body only 2 Ga ago. If correct, this would be the first evidence that an ordinary chondrite parent body underwent internal reprocessing significantly later than 4.5 Ga ago.  相似文献

The large-scale (i.e. bar-scale) structure of channel deposits of the braided, low-sinuosity Calamus River, Nebraska, is described using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) profiles combined with vibracores. Basal erosion surfaces are generally overlain by medium-scale, trough-cross-stratified (sets 3–25 cm thick), very coarse to medium sands, that are associated with relatively high amplitude, discontinuous GPR reflectors. Overlying deposits are bioturbated, small-scale cross-stratified (sets <3 cm thick) and vegetation-rich, fine to very-fine sands, that are associated with low-amplitude discontinuous reflectors. Near-surface peat and turf have no associated GPR reflectors. In along-stream profiles through braid and point bars, most GPR reflectors dip downstream at up to 2° relative to the basal erosion surface, but some reflectors in the upstream parts of bars are parallel to the basal erosion surface or dip upstream. In cross-stream profiles through bars, GPR reflectors are either approximately parallel to bar surfaces or have low-angle inclinations (up to 6°) towards cut banks of adjacent curved channels. Basal erosion surfaces become deeper towards cut banks of curved channels. These structures can be explained by lateral and downstream growth of bars combined with vertical accretion. Convex upwards forms up to 0·5 m high, several metres across and tens of metres long represent episodic accretion of unit bars (scroll bars and bar heads). Stratal patterns in channel fills record a complicated history of erosion and deposition during filling, including migration of relatively small bars. A revised facies model for this type of sandy, braided river has been constructed based on this new information on large-scale bedding structure.  相似文献

Sand units within the winter clay components of distal, glaciolacustrine varves of Kickininee Park, British Columbia show a common sequence of cross-lamination, and a similarity in grain size. A lower division of micro-cross-lamination is succeeded by two divisions of climbing ripple drift cross-lamination. The two upper divisions are differentiated on the basis of angle of climb, a marked increase occurring in the top division. The sequence is related to turbidity currents which swept down lake during winter. It is possible that the B division of some turbidite sequences may have formed under conditions of low relief bedforms similar to those which generated the lower division of the glaciolacustrine sands. Stratigraphic position and varve thickness are used to support the conclusion that the distal turbidite sands are down lake equivalents of proximal grain-flow deposits. The appearance of coarse grained deposits within winter layers of varves may cause two years of deposition to be allocated to a single varve. This may introduce large errors when varves are used as time indicators.  相似文献

The computer program presented here seeks to improve estimation of statistical parameters for grain-size data by use of interpolated values. Interpolation is made by fitting a series of overlapping parabolas to the data, and follows the method of Snyder (1961). The values are used in moment formulas to compute standard statistical measures. Skewness and kurtosis are reduced by the interpolation data, and extreme positive values of kurtosis tend to be greatly reduced. The program also picks major modes, the median, and sediment type.  相似文献

The Red Mountain alpine peridotie forms the basal, dominantlyharzburgitic tectonite portion of an ophiolite suite in SouthIsland, New Zealand. Olivine and pyroxene Mg/Fe compositionsare constant for individual lithologies, but generally increasethrough the series harzburgite, orthopyroxenite, harzburgiticdunite, dunite. An olivine-clinopyroxene dominated transitionalperidotite along the western margin of the mass has more Fe-richsilicates than in the harzburgitic suite. Fe-Mg silicate-spinelrelationships and the distribution of Al between coexistingpyroxene and spinel indicate nearly complete post-layering equilibration.A partial re-equilibration is suggested by narrow compositionalrims on pyroxenes and spinel. Relative to the mineral cores,the rims show enhanced partitioning of Al into spinel relativeto pyroxene. The Fe-Mg relationships between silicates and spinel,and the compositional variations from cores to rims of pyroxenesand spinels indicate that the rims formed at lower temperaturesthan the mineral cores. This conclusion is supported by theapplication of several geothermometers, which give average temperaturesof equilibration and partial re-equilibration of 1000–1070?C and 920–1030 ?C, respectively. Pyroxene overgrowthson olivine probably represent pre-equilibration cooling phenomena.Equilibration pressures cannot be estimated with precision becauseRed Mountain pyroxenes have Al contents that vary as a functionof whole-rock Al2O3, and other compositional variables, as wellas of T and P of equilibration. The lack of plagioclase in theharzburgite tectonites, and the wide range of (Al/Cr)spinelindicate equilibration at fairly high pressures, probably atdepths within the 25–80 km range. The transitional peridotiteprobably formed by re-equilibration of residual crystals withbasaltic melt at shallower (<25 km) depths, and is evidencesupporting the conclusion that the ultramafic and mafic partsof the ophiolite suite at Red Mountain represent complementaryparts of the same melting event.  相似文献
