Annual cycles of convectively important atmospheric parameters have been computed for a variety of from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR)/National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) global reanalysis, using 7 years of reanalysis data. Regions in the central United States show stronger seasonality in combinations of thermodynamic parameters than found elsewhere in North America or Europe. As a result, there is a period of time in spring and early summer when climatological mean conditions are supportive of severe thunderstorms.The annual cycles help in understanding the large-scale processes that lead to the combination of atmospheric ingredients necessary for strong convection. This, in turn, lays groundwork for possible changes in distribution of the environments associated with possible global climate change.  相似文献

The impact of air transport on the surface ozone variations is analyzed at Kislovodsk High Mountain Station for the period 1989–1996 on the basis of 2D back trajectories. It was shown that the contribution of photochemical and dynamical processes is different for the different seasons. In summer months the surface ozone concentration is governed by photochemical ozone production in semi polluted air from the regions of Northern Caspian, Southern Ural and Volga region. Time of the seasonal ozone maximum appearance is defined by joint influence of the processes of photochemical production and destruction in the eastern sectors and advection from Ukraine and Central Europe. The value of the seasonal minimum is determined by the processes of ozone destruction in the air coming from northeastern direction in the stable frontal zone. Distribution of sectors of the air transport changes from year to year and it can partly explain strong negative trend of the surface ozone concentration at the site.  相似文献

The lower Yellow River channel was maintained by artificial levees between 1580 and 1849. During this period, 280 levee breaches occurred. To estimate sediment storage on the floodplains outside the levees, a regression model with a decadal time step was developed to calculate the outflow ratio for the years when levee breaching occurred. Uncertainty analysis was used to identify the likely outflow ratio. Key variables of the model include annual water discharge, a proxy for levee conditions, and potential bankfull discharge of the channel before flood season. Uncertainty analysis reveals an outflow ratio of 0.35–0.56. We estimate that during this period, 18.8–30.1% of the total ~312 Gt of sediment load was deposited on the floodplains outside the levees. Human-accelerated erosion in the Loess Plateau caused a 4-fold increase in sediment delivery to the lower Yellow River, which could not be accommodated by channel morphodynamic changes. As a result, 21.2–27.5% of the total sediment load was deposited within the levees, creating a super-elevated channel bed that facilitated an uncommonly high breach outflow ratio. Hence, the factor of a large super-elevation relative to the mean main channel depth should be considered when designing diversions to restore floodplains. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Stream–aquifer interaction plays a vital role in the water cycle, and a proper study of this interaction is needed for understanding groundwater recharge, contaminants migration, and for managing surface water and groundwater resources. A model‐based investigation of a field experiment in a riparian zone of the Schwarzbach river, a tributary of the Rhine River in Germany, was conducted to understand stream–aquifer interaction under alternative gaining and losing streamflow conditions. An equivalent streambed permeability, estimated by inverting aquifer responses to flood waves, shows that streambed permeability increased during infiltration of stream water to aquifer and decreased during exfiltration. Aquifer permeability realizations generated by multiple‐point geostatistics exhibit a high degree of heterogeneity and anisotropy. A coupled surface water groundwater flow model was developed incorporating the time‐varying streambed permeability and heterogeneous aquifer permeability realizations. The model was able to reproduce varying pressure heads at two observation wells near the stream over a period of 55 days. A Monte Carlo analysis was also carried out to simulate groundwater flow, its age distribution, and the release of a hypothetical wastewater plume into the aquifer from the stream. Results of this uncertainty analysis suggest (a) stream–aquifer exchange flux during the infiltration periods was constrained by aquifer permeability; (b) during exfiltration, this flux was constrained by the reduced streambed permeability; (c) the effect of temporally variable streambed permeability and aquifer heterogeneity were found important to improve the accurate capture of the uncertainty; and (d) probabilistic infiltration paths in the aquifer reveal that such pathways and the associated prediction of the extent of the contaminant plume are highly dependent on aquifer heterogeneity.  相似文献

The longitudinal distribution of coronal holes has been analyzed for the time interval 1976–2002. Coronal holes don't seem to be randomly distributed. The cluster structure has been revealed in the time—space organization of coronal hole distribution. The complexity and lifetime of clusters depend on the solar cycle phase. The comparison of active region and coronal hole cluster structures shows that some coronal hole clusters as well as active region ones occur almost simultaneously in both hemispheres, some clusters in the north or in the south hemisphere only. Some coronal hole clusters coincide with the active region clusters and some do not coincide. They reflect the large-scale solar magnetic field distribution.  相似文献

Information on the surface structure of the Kuiper Belt objectscan be obtained from studies of their opposition brightening.Although KBOs are observed at a very limited phase angle rangethey represent a unique opportunity to study the backscatteringphenomenon down almost to zero phase angle. Preliminaryestimations of the opposition effect amplitude and width based oncomposite phase curves of four KBOs and two Centaurs showed theexistence of a very narrow opposition surge of about 0.1–0.2 mag at phase angles less than 0.1–0.2 deg. It may indicate a highporosity of the KBOs regoliths. Further observations are needed toconfirm this phenomenon.  相似文献
