Reconstructions of the timing and frequency of past eruptions are important to assess the propensity for future volcanic activity, yet in volcanic areas such as the East African Rift only piecemeal eruption histories exist. Understanding the volcanic history of scoria-cone fields, where eruptions are often infrequent and deposits strongly weathered, is particularly challenging. Here we reconstruct a history of volcanism from scoria cones situated along the eastern shoulders of the Kenya–Tanzania Rift, using a sequence of tephra (volcanic ash) layers preserved in the ~250-ka sediment record of Lake Chala near Mount Kilimanjaro. Seven visible and two non-visible (crypto-) tephra layers in the Lake Chala sequence are attributed to activity from the Mt Kilimanjaro (northern Tanzania) and the Chyulu Hills (southern Kenya) volcanic fields, on the basis of their glass chemistry, textural characteristics and known eruption chronology. The Lake Chala record of eruptions from scoria cones in the Chyulu Hills volcanic field confirms geological and historical evidence of its recent activity, and provides first-order age estimates for seven previously unknown eruptions. Long and well-resolved sedimentary records such as that of Lake Chala have significant potential for resolving regional eruption chronologies spanning hundreds of thousands of years. 相似文献

The primary factors that control the concentration of total reduced (inorganic) sulfide in coastal sediments are believed
to be the availability of reactive iron, dissolved sulfate and metabolizable organic carbon. We selected nine sites in shallow
(<3 m), close to sub-tropical, estuaries and bays along the central Texas coast that represented a range in sediment grain
size (a proxy for reactive iron), salinity (a proxy for dissolved sulfate), and total organic carbon (a proxy for metabolizable
organic carbon). Based on these parameters a prediction was made of which factor was likely to control total reduced sulfide
at each site and what the relative total reduced sulfide concentration was likely to be. To test the prediction, the sediments
were analyzed for total reduced sulfide, acid volatile sulfide, and citrate dithionate-extractable, HCl-extractable and total
Fe in the solid phase. Using solid-state gold–mercury amalgam microelectrodes and voltammetry, we determined pore water depth
profiles of Fe(II) and ΣH2S and presence or absence of FeS(aq). At five of the nine sites the calculated degree of sufildization of citrate dithionite-reactive-iron was close to or greater
than 1 indicating that rapidly reactive iron was probably the limiting factor for iron sulfide mineral formation. At one site
(salinity = 0.9) dissolved Fe(II) was high, ΣH2S was undetectable and the total reduced sulfide concentration was low indicating sulfate limitation. At the last three sites
a low degree of sulfidization and modest total reduced (inorganic) sulfide concentrations appeared to be the result of a limited
supply of metabolizable organic carbon. Fe(II)–S(-II) clusters (FeS(aq)) were undetectable in 10 out of 12 bay sediment profiles where ΣH2S was close to or below detection limits, but was observed in all other porewater profiles. Acid volatile sulfide, but not
total reduced sulfide, was well correlated with total organic carbon and ranged from being undetectable in some cores to representing
a major portion of total reduced sulfide in other cores. Although predicted controls on total reduced sulfide were good for
very low salinity water or sandy sediments, they were only right about half the time for the other sediments. The likely reasons
for the wrong predictions are the poor correlation of total organic carbon with grain size and differing fractions of metabolizable
organic carbon in different sedimentary environments. Differences in sediment accumulation rates may also play a role, but
these are difficult to determine in this region where hurricanes often resuspend and move sediments. This study demonstrates
the need to examine more complex and often difficult to determine parameters in anoxic “normal marine” sediments if we are
to understand what controls the concentration and distribution of sulfides. 相似文献

A wide range of information is now available on the ecology of rock surface microorganisms (including bacteria, fungi and algae) and lichens and their role in weathering in particular locations. External environmental conditions as well as rock characteristics determine the type of rock surface community, and thus the style of biological weathering. A simple, preliminary conceptual model can be drawn, which relates biological weathering activity to an environmental stress gradient and which is applicable at a range of scales. Further research needs carrying out to test and extend this model in order to make some progress towards the important goal of assessing the overall importance of biological weathering to geomorphology. 相似文献

The residual (time-average) salinity and circulation in a numerical ocean model of the Tampa Bay estuary are shown to experience
significant temporal variation under realistic forcing conditions. A version of the Estuarine Coastal Ocean Model developed
for Tampa Bay with 70 by 100 horizontal grid points and 11 sigma levels is examined for the years 2001–2003. Model output
variables are averaged over the entire time of the simulation to generate long-term residual fields. The residual axial current
is found to be dominated by the buoyancy-driven baroclinic circulation with an outflow (southwestward) at the surface and
to the sides of the shipping channel, and an inflow (northeastward) usually occurring subsurface within or above the shipping
channel. Averages over 30 d are used to examine variations in the residual fields. During the simulation the average surface
salinity near the head of Tampa Bay varies with the freshwater inflow, from 12‰ to 33%. At the bay mouth salinity varies from
30%. to 36%.. A localized measure of the baroclinic circulation in the shipping channel indicates the residual circulation
can vary strongly, attaining a magnitude triple the long-term mean value. The baroclinic circulation can be disrupted, going
to near zero or even reversing, when the buoyancy-driven flow is weak and the surface winds are to the northeast. Three time
periods, representing different environmental conditions, are chosen to examine these results in detail. A scaling argument
indicates the relative strength of buoyancy versus wind as ΔρgH2(LC
Dω2)−1, where δρ is head-to-mouth density difference across the bay,g is gravitational acceleration,H is depth,L is bay length,C
D is the surface wind drag coefficient, andw is wind speed. Tampa Bay is usually in the buoyancy dominated regime. The importance of winds in the weak-buoyancy case is

Abstract— Modal mineralogies of individual, equilibrated (petrologic type 4–6 L and LL chondrites have been measured using an electron microprobe mapping technique, and the chemical compositions of coexisting silicate minerals have been analyzed. Progressive changes in the relative abundances and in the molar Fe/Mn and Fe/Mg ratios of olivine, low‐Ca pyroxene, and diopside occur with increasing metamorphic grade. Variations in olivine/low‐Ca pyroxene ratios (Ol/Px) and in metal abundances and compositions with petrologic type support the hypothesis that oxidation of metallic iron accompanied thermal metamorphism in ordinary chondrites. Modal Ol/Px ratios are systematically lower than normative Ol/Px ratios for the same meteorites, suggesting that the commonly used C.I.P.W. norm calculation procedure may not adequately estimate silicate mineral abundances in reduced chondrites. Ol/Px ratios calculated from visible and near‐infrared (VISNIR) reflectance spectra of the same meteorites are not in agreement with other Ol/Px determinations, possibly because of spectral complexities arising from other minerals in chondrites. Characteristic features in VISNIR spectra are sensitive to the proportions and compositions of olivine and pyroxenes, the minerals most affected by oxidative metamorphism. This work may allow spectral calibration for the determination of mineralogy and petrologic type, and thus may be useful for spectroscopic studies of asteroids. 相似文献

The potential consequences of bedload transport of postlarvae for patterns of distribution of marine invertebrates were explored
by developing a bedload transport model for juvenile bivalves in a small estuary in New Jersey, USA. A simple numerical model
of tidal current hydrodynamics was developed based on field measurements of shear stresses near the bottom. Burrowing behavior
of bivalves was incorporated into the model of bedload transport by using estimates of entrainment rates of Gemma gemma and Mya arenaria in a laboratory flume, and jump lengths of the bivalves were estimated by methods previously developed for noncohesive particles.
Based on the flood domination and strong gradient of shear stresses in the Navesink estuary, our model predicted that juvenile
bivalves would accumulate in the center of the estuary, traveling up to several kilometers over 30 days. Field distributions
of juvenile bivalves were consistent with the model predictions for other species of bivalves but not for G. gemma, for which field distributions of both <500- and >500-μm individuals were concentrated in the eastern end of the estuary.
Differences between the bedload model and G. gemma distributions suggest that spatial variation in burrowing behavior or biological interactions are playing an important role
in maintaining distribution patterns of this species in spite of high levels of bedload transport. This modeling approach
is applicable to other juvenile benthic invertebrates that disperse as bedload and is a useful model against which to compare
field observations of rates of transport and patterns of distribution and abundance. 相似文献

The coastal marshlands of the Nueces estuary, Texas depend upon periodic freshwater inundation to support current community structure and promote further establishment and expansion of emergent halophytes. Decades of watershed modifications have dramatically decreased freshwater discharge into the upper estuary resulting in hypersaline and dry conditions. In an attempt to partially restore inflow, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation excavated two overflow channels re-connecting the Nueces River to the marshlands. Freshwater-mediated (precipitation and inflow) changes in tidal creek and porewater salinity and emergent marsh vegetation were examined over a 5-yr period at three stations in the upper Nueces Marsh with the aid of a Geographical Information System (GIS). Two stations were potentially subjected to freshwater inflow through the channels, while one station experienced only precipitation. Decreased tidal creek and porewater salinity were significantly correlated with increased freshwater at all stations (R2=0.37 to 0.56), although porewater salinities remained hypersaline. GIS analyses indicated the most considerable vegetation change following freshwater inundation was increased cover of the annual succulentSalicornia bigelovii. Fall inundation allowed seed germination and rapid expansion of this species into previously bare areas during the subsequent winter and following spring. The station affected by both inflow and precipitation exhibited greaterS. bigelovii cover than the station affected solely by precipitation in both spring 1999 (58. 7% compared to 27.9%) and 2000 (48.6% compared to 1.9%). Percent cover of the perennialBatis maritima temporarily increased after periods of consistent rainfall. The response was short term, and cover quickly returned to pre-inundation conditions within 3 mo. Prolonged inundation led to longterm (>2yr) decreases in percent cover ofB. maritima. Our results suggest that the timing and quantity of freshwater inundation strongly dictate halophyte response to precipitation and inflow. Brief periods of freshwater inundation that occur at specific times of year alleviate stress and promote seed germination and growth, but extended soil saturation can act as a disturbance that has a negative impact on species adapted to hypersaline conditions. 相似文献
