Abstract

The Acid Deposition and Oxidant Model (ADOM) is an Eulerian long‐range transport and deposition model. One of the most highly parametrized and least well established parts of the model is the scavenging module that describes cloud formation, pollutant scavenging, aqueous‐phase chemistry and wet deposition. As a means of gaining insight into the scavenging module, results from simulations with the module are compared with the results from simulations for equivalent conditions with a three‐dimensional dynamic cloud chemistry model.

Comparisons of results for a variety of initial conditions show that wet deposition of sulphate, nitrate and ammonium ions tend to be underpredicted by the scavenging module and that the pH of the rain is overpredicted. Although the differences are for the most part not large, they are sensitive to cloud top height. The amount of hydrogen peroxide deposited at the surface is significantly smaller in the ADOM module than in the cloud chemistry model. For the particular conditions that are considered, oxidation is limited by the hydrogen peroxide concentration for the cloud chemistry model, but by the sulphur dioxide concentration for the ADOM module.  相似文献

This is the first of two papers that describe the generation of a 25-member perturbed parameter ensemble (PPE) of high-resolution, global coupled simulations for the period 1900–2100, using CMIP5 historical and RCP8.5 emissions. Fifteen of these 25 coupled simulations now form a subset of the global projections provided for the UK Climate Projections 2018 (UKCP18). This first paper describes the selection of 25 variants (combinations of 47 parameters) using a set of cheap, coarser-resolution atmosphere-only simulations from a large sample of nearly 3000 variants. Retrospective 5-day weather forecasts run at climate resolution, and simulations of 2004–2009 with prescribed SST and sea ice are evaluated to filter out poor performance. We opted for a single design choice and sensitivity tests were done after the PPE was generated to demonstrate the effect of design choices on the filtering. Given our choice, only 38 of the parameter combinations were found to have acceptable performance at this stage. Idealised atmosphere-only simulations were then used to select the subset of 25 members that were as diverse as possible in terms of their CO2 and aerosol forcing, and their response to warmer SSTs. Using our parallel set of atmosphere-only and coupled PPEs (the latter from paper 2), we show that local biases in the atmosphere-only experiments are generally informative about the biases in the coupled PPE. Biases in radiative fluxes and cloud amounts are strongly informative for most regions, whereas this is only true for a smaller fraction of the globe for precipitation and dynamical variables. Therefore, the cheap experiments are an affordable way to search for promising parameter combinations but have limitations.

The large-scale photospheric magnetic field has been computed by allowing observed active region fields to diffuse and to be sheared by differential rotation in accordance with the Leighton (1969) magnetokinematic model of the solar cycle. The differential rotation of the computed field patterns as determined by autocorrelation curves is similar to that of the observed photospheric field, and poleward of 20° latitude both are significantly different from the differential rotation of the long-lived sunspots (Newton and Nunn, 1951) used as an input into the computations.Now at Department of Physics, Victoria University of Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand.  相似文献

The effect of the introduction of the ice phase in a cloud droplet growth model is examined. The ice particles are introduced by freezing cloud droplets at rates consistent with observations of natural ice nucleus concentrations. In moderate updrafts the production of large particles is retarded owing to the glaciation of the cloud. In stronger updrafts where insufficient time is available for precipitation to form by condensation and coalescence, the production of small precipitation particles is increased.  相似文献

Abstract

A model to compute rapidly the absorption of solar radiation in the atmosphere is described. The model is based partially on the parameterization of Lacis and Hansen and also makes use of the delta‐Eddington method. In addition to absorption by ozone and water vapour, and scattering by air molecules and clouds, the mode1 includes absorption and scattering by aerosols. Good agreement is found in comparison with the Lacis and Hansen parameterization in the absence of clouds and aerosol. The present model represents an improvement in the treatment of scattering by clouds. Its main advantage though, is in its flexibility in allowing for interactions with the atmospheric aerosol.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of using a combination frequency acoustic technique to measure the near-surface bubble population in the open sea. The combination frequency technique monitors the appearance of sum-and-difference signals generated by the nonlinear interaction of two sound fields: one, a high-frequency signal, scatters geometrically from the bubble, and the other, of much lower frequency, is used to excite the bubble into resonant pulsation. The text details the calibration of the apparatus necessary to relate the measured heights of the sum-and-difference terms to actual numbers of bubbles and describes the experimental procedure for the collection of the oceanic data. In total, six trials were performed over a one-day period, each comprising ten “snapshots” of the local bubble population at ten discrete radii. This data was augmented with simultaneous video, slide, and dictaphone records of the state of the sea around the measurement position  相似文献

Glacier thermal regime is shown to have a significant influence on the formation of ice‐marginal moraines. Annual moraines at the margin of Midtdalsbreen are asymmetrical and contain sorted fine sediment and diamicton layers dipping gently up‐glacier. The sorted fine sediments include sands and gravels that were initially deposited fluvially directly in front of the glacier. Clast‐form data indicate that the diamictons have a mixed subglacial and fluvial origin. Winter cold is able to penetrate through the thin (<10 m) ice margin and freeze these sediments to the glacier sole. During winter, sediment becomes elevated along the wedge‐shaped advancing glacier snout before melting out and being deposited as asymmetrical ridges. These annual moraines have a limited preservation potential of ~40 years, and this is reflected in the evolution of landforms across the glacier foreland. Despite changing climatic conditions since the Little Ice Age and particularly within the last 10 years when frontal retreat has significantly speeded up, glacier dynamics have remained relatively constant with moraines deposited via basal freeze‐on, which requires stable glacier geometry. While the annual moraines on the eastern side of Midtdalsbreen indicate a slow steady retreat, the western foreland contains contrasting ice‐stagnation topography, highlighting the importance of local forcing factors such as shielding, aspect and debris cover in addition to changing climate. This study indicates that, even in temperate glacial environments, restricted or localised areas of cold‐based ice can have a significant impact on the geomorphic imprint of the glacier system and may actually be more widespread within both modern and ancient glacial environments than previously thought.  相似文献
