We present analysis techniques to improve the energy resolution of stereoscopic systems of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, using the HEGRA telescope system as an example. The techniques include (i) the determination of the height of the shower maximum, which is then taken into account in the energy determination, and (ii) the determination of the location of the shower core with the additional constraint that the direction of the gamma rays is known a priori. This constraint can be applied for gamma ray point sources, and results in a significant improvement in the localization of the shower core, which translates into better energy resolution. Combining both techniques, the HEGRA telescopes reach an energy resolution between 9% and 12%, over the entire energy range from 1 TeV to almost 100 TeV. Options for further improvements of the energy resolution are discussed. 相似文献

Dissociative recombination (DR) of ionospheric O2+ ions is an important source of suprathermal atomic oxygen in the exosphere as previous studies about the Martian upper atmosphere have shown. Because of the weaker gravitational attraction a hot oxygen corona on Mars should be denser than that observed on Venus. Since the most important mechanism for the production of the hot oxygen atoms in the Martian exosphere is DR, we investigated the variability of this production mechanism depending of solar activity. The Japanese Nozomi spacecraft will have the possibility to detect with the neutral mass spectrometer (NMS) for the first time in-situ the theoretically predicted hot oxygen corona on Mars, if the corona number density above the cold background atmosphere is of the order of 10,000 cm−3. Due to a problem in the propulsion system Nozomi failed its planned arrival rendevouzs with Mars in October 1999 and will, therefore, arrive at the red planet not before January 2004. Solar activity will reach its maximum in 2001, so the related production rate of hot oxygen atoms will be in the medium range during the new arrival date of Nozomi. We used the ionospheric profiles from the Viking mission for low solar activity conditions (F10.7≈70) and the Mariner 9 mission with a solar activity of about 120 for medium solar wind activity. The latter is comparable to the level we expect for the Mars arrival of Nozomi. The resulting influence of the hot oxygen corona number density distribution was calculated with a Monte Carlo technique. This technique is used to compute a hot particle density distribution function. We studied the atomic diffusion process in the Martian atmosphere by simulating the collision probability, particle direction and energy loss after collisions by generating random numbers. Compared to previous studies we have improved the Monte Carlo model by using more and smaller altitude steps and more detailed treatment of particles with a temporary downward motion. This has resulted in an increased amount of collisions and a shift to lower energies in the energy spectrum. Our results show that the hot oxygen component should begin to dominate above the cold background atmosphere at an altitude of about 500 km above the Martian surface. The NMS instrument on board of Nozomi should detect the hot oxygen component after its arrival at Mars in January 2004, at an altitude of about 600 km above the Martian surface. Since the solar activity will decrease during the mission the measurements during the first orbits will be the most significant ones. The first in-situ measurements of the hot oxygen number density would be very important for adjusting atmospheric escape models by separating ballistic, satellite and escape trajectories of the hot oxygen atoms, which are significant for studies of the evolution and solar wind interaction of the Martian atmosphere. 相似文献

Spectra of the cellular photospheric flows are determined from observations acquired by the MDI instrument on the SOHO spacecraft. Spherical harmonic spectra are obtained from the full-disk observations. Fourier spectra are obtained from the high-resolution observations. The p-mode oscillation signal and instrumental artifacts are reduced by temporal filtering of the Doppler data. The resulting spectra give power (kinetic energy) per wave number for effective spherical harmonic degrees from 1 to over 3000. Significant power is found at all wavenumbers, including the small wavenumbers representative of giant cells. The time evolution of the spectral coefficients indicates that these small wavenumber components rotate at the solar rotation rate and thus represent a component of the photospheric cellular flows. The spectra show distinct peaks representing granules and supergranules but no distinct features at wavenumbers representative of mesogranules or giant cells. The observed cellular patterns and spectra are well represented by a model that includes two distinct modes – granules and supergranules. 相似文献

Using data from the Global Oscillations Network Group (GONG) that covers the period from 1995 to 1998 we study the change in frequencies of solar oscillations with solar activity. From these frequencies we attempt to determine any possible variation in solar structure with solar activity. The Mount Wilson synoptic magnetic data for the period September 1987 through March 1996 are completely revised and used to provide polar plots of the solar magnetic fields for both hemispheres. This period, from Carrington rotations 1793 to 1906, covers the reversals of the polar magnetic fields in cycle 22. Comparison of our plots with the presently available H filtergrams for this period shows that the polarity boundaries are consistent in these two data sets where they overlap. The Mount Wilson plots show that the polar field reversals involve a complex sequence of events. Although the details differ slightly, the basic patterns are similar in each hemisphere. First the old polarity becomes isolated at the pole, then shortly thereafter, the isolation is broken, and the polar field includes unipolar regions of both polarities. The old polarity then reclaims the polar region, but when the isolation of this field is established for a second time, it declines in both area and strength. We take the reversal to be complete when the old polarity field is no longer observed in the Mount Wilson plots. With this criterion we find that the polar field reversal is completed in the north by CR 1836, i.e., by December 1990, and in the south by CR 1853, i.e., March 1992. 相似文献

H. K. Eichhorn had a lively interest in statistics during his entire scientific career, and made a number of significant contributions to the statistical treatment of astrometric problems. In the past decade, a strong movement has taken place for the reintroduction of Bayesian methods of statistics into astronomy, driven by new understandings of the power of these methods as well as by the adoption of computationally-intensive simulation methods to the practical solution of Bayesian problems. We have investigated the interacting winds model (IWM) in which the shapes of elliptical Planetary Nebulae (PNe) can be explained
by the asymmetric mass loss produced by a rotating AGB star. The mass loss mechanism is based on a dust driven wind calculated
for stationary situations. Already for small rotation rates of the AGB star we get a significantly angle-dependent mass loss
which is concentrated towards the equatorial plane. This pole to equator density variation in the space surrounding the star
influences the shape of the later developed PN. We compare these theoretical shapes with observed PNe and for some objects
with well known quantities our model can fit the observations quite well.

The dependence of the ellipticity of nearby optical galaxies associated with extragalactic radio sources on the type of radio galaxy is considered. It is shown that elliptical galaxies identified with radio galaxies of the FRI type and with radio sources having a radio image with a small elongation have a smaller ellipticity, on the average, than those associated with radio galaxies of the FRII type and with radio sources with greater elongation. As one possible explanation for this phenomenon, one can assume that the optical galaxies associated with radio galaxies of type FRI and with radio sources of small elongation are oriented in space so that they are observed edge-on relatively rarely. 相似文献
