A calculated petrogenetic grid for the system CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-CO2-H2O (CaMASCH), incorporating Tschermak's substitutions in amphibole, chlorite, talc and clinopyroxene, is used to examine phase relationships in aluminous marbles. A series of diagrams illustrating the effect upon stable mineral assemblages of increasing the aluminium content of a bulk composition is used to show the way aluminous minerals enter mineral assemblages in progressively more aluminous rocks. The effects of changing pressure and the incorporation of Fe into the bulk composition on the stable mineral assemblages are also examined. The calculated equilibria are shown to be in reasonable agreement with natural assemblages, and the incorporation of new experimental data on amphiboles into the existing dataset is shown to improve the agreement between observed and natural amphibole compositions.  相似文献

Characteristics of the winter boundary layer over the (elevation 1600 m) in the vicinity of Johannesburg, 26 ° S, 29 ° E, are described in relation to air pollution potential by means of doppler sounder observations and background climatological data. Regional mean winds for the 800 h Pa level show that the winter boundary layer is dominated by a cell of high pressure over the Limpopo River Valley to the northeast of Johannesburg. To the south of Johannesburg, westerly circumpolar flow is prevalent and encroaches onto the plateau during the passage of frontal perturbations. Doppler sounder wind and turbulence profiles, averaged for the months of August 1984 and June 1985, are presented to establish a boundary-layer climatology. Diurnally averaged doppler sounder profiles for both months revealed a very consistent convective/day — stable/night cycle in the very dry winter conditions. A sharp radiation inversion formed just after sunset up to the 150–200 m level and grew in depth to reach 300 m on average near sunrise. The inversion caused a reduction in frictional drag and the formation of nocturnal low level jet during westerly encroachment. A case study is evaluated to determine the detailed structure of the low level jet near Johannesburg. The thermal wind plays a role in the nocturnal acceleration; mechanisms for its development and maintenance are explored. Additional work is presented on the synoptic cycle and its influence on air pollution dispersion over the African Plateau.  相似文献

Macrobenthic species abundances and physical/chemical factors known of affect them were measured in a mesohaline region of the Chesapeake Bay from 1971 to 1982. Variation in species abundance due to station differences, seasonal patterns and year-to-year fluctuations in physical/chemical factors were quantified. The major source of variation in abundance of most species was that associated with seasonal recruitment cycles. Spatial variation in abundances of dominant species was small within habitats defined by sediment characteristics. However, abundance variation among sediment types was relatively large. All species showed significant year-to-year fluctuation in abundance, but no species had systematic long-term increases or decreases in abundance during the study period. Macrobenthos populations were persistent over the 11 years within abundance boundaries defined chiefly by fluctuations in salinity and dissolved oxygen concentration. Most species responded to salinity changes, especially those of an extreme nature, with predictable increases or decreases in abundance. Abundances of all species declined rapidly under conditions of low dissolved oxygen concentration (<2 ppm). Macrobenthos with planktonic developmental stages rapidly repopulated the region following periods of population decline. Repopulation by brooding species was slower.  相似文献

Stratified flow theory is applied to pyroclatic surges in an effort to gain insight into transport dynamics during explosive eruptions. Particle transport is assumed to be by turbulent suspension, and calculations contained herein show that this is likely for many cases including the 18 May 1980 blast at mount St. Helens. The discussion centers on the Rouse number (Pn), which represents a ratio of particle settling velocity to scale of turbulence; the Brunt-Väisälä frequency (N), which is the maximum possible frequency of internal waves; the Froude number (Fr), representing the ratio of inertial forces to gravitational forces; and the Richardson number (Ri), a ratio of buoyant restoring forces to turbulent mixing forces. The velocity or flow power dependence of bed-form wavelength in surge deposits is related to a velocity dependence of wavelength of internal waves in the turbulent surge. This produces a decrease in dune wavelength with increasing distance from vent. Migration direction of bed forms is related toFr as it is defined for a continuously stratified flow. Proximal to distal facies variations in surge deposits reflect increasingPn andRi as the flows move away from their sources. This produces the progression from sandwave to massive to planar facies with increasing distance from vent. Where the long axis of topography is at low angles to the flow direction, massive facies in topographic lows may from concurrently with sandwave facies on highs, due to the higher particle concentration in the lows. Where long axis of topography is at high angles to flow direction, denser lower parts of the surge may be dammed or blocked. Blocked material tends to form massive flows that may move down slope independent of the overriding surge. A model incorporating turbulent transport, stratified flow, and time evolution of pyroclastic surges is proposed for deposits which have been attributed to both pyroclastic flow and pyroclastic surge transport by various workers. During the initial high energy (waxing) phase of the eruptive event,Pn is sufficiently low that only coarse, but poorly sorted, material is deposited to form relatively coarse bottom layers. As the event wanes, remaining finer material is deposited through a thin bed load to produce overlying bedded and cross-bedded veneer deposits. Throughout most of the event, blocking occurs to produce relatively thick and massive deposits in valley bottoms.  相似文献

Bolivia is a country with high levels of poverty and inequality among its peoples and regions. For the nation and its urban and rural areas, trends in the social and spatial distribution of poverty (and extreme poverty) are identified from 1976 to 2003 using UBN data with minor support where appropriate from poverty lines. The main survey between 1992 and 2001 uses composite and selected UBN to track detailed poverty change for the country’s nine departments, its ten largest cities and a selection of other smaller urban and rural municipalities. Because of rising background increases in population in the various surveyed administrative units, many instances of relative reductions in poverty are accompanied by rising absolute increases. Marked spatial variations in poverty and development in the country over the last several decades are identified as the main driver for the country’s quickening pace of rural–urban migration. As a result, the paper concludes by assessing two different but closely related views. One investigation tests the notion that because more poor people have been living in Bolivia’s cities than in its rural areas since the mid to late 1990s, rapid rural–urban migration has simply shifted the locus of poverty from the countryside to the cities in a process called, the ‘urbanisation of poverty.’ A second, more challenging, investigation assesses the view that the flow of poor rural people to the better serviced urban areas of Bolivia has actually acted to alleviate national poverty levels.  相似文献

An improved seismic hazard model for use in performance‐based earthquake engineering is presented. The model is an improved approximation from the so‐called ‘power law’ model, which is linear in log–log space. The mathematics of the model and uncertainty incorporation is briefly discussed. Various means of fitting the approximation to hazard data derived from probabilistic seismic hazard analysis are discussed, including the limitations of the model. Based on these ‘exact’ hazard data for major centres in New Zealand, the parameters for the proposed model are calibrated. To illustrate the significance of the proposed model, a performance‐based assessment is conducted on a typical bridge, via probabilistic seismic demand analysis. The new hazard model is compared to the current power law relationship to illustrate its effects on the risk assessment. The propagation of epistemic uncertainty in the seismic hazard is also considered. To allow further use of the model in conceptual calculations, a semi‐analytical method is proposed to calculate the demand hazard in closed form. For the case study shown, the resulting semi‐analytical closed form solution is shown to be significantly more accurate than the analytical closed‐form solution using the power law hazard model, capturing the ‘exact’ numerical integration solution to within 7% accuracy over the entire range of exceedance rate. Results of a simple model of the effects of temperature on net ecosystem production call into question the argument that the large stocks of soil carbon and greater projected warming in the boreal and tu ndra regions of the world willlead to rapid efflux of carbon from these biomes to the atmosphere. We show that low rates of carbon turnover in these regions and a relatively greater response of net primary production to changes in temperature may lead to carbon storage over some limited range of warming. In contrast, the high rates of soil respiration found in tropical ecosystems are highly sensitive to small changes in temperature, so that despite the less pronounced warming expected in equatorial regions, tropical soils are likely to release relatively large amounts of carbon to the atmosphere. Results for high-latitude biomes are highly sensitive to parameter values used, while the net efflux of carbon from the tropics appears robust.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to develop a diffusion model for a continuous point source which takes into account the increase of wind speed with height, and to compare this model with short-range diffusion experiments. The main problem was to find a good expression for the vertical diffusion coefficient. It turned out that good agreement between theory and experiment could only be obtained by introducing a settling speed W for the tracer combined with a conventional expression for the vertical diffusion (K(Z) = K 0Z1−p). An empirical relation was found between K 0 and τ vU and between W and bar σ vU2.  相似文献

In order to decide whether the seeing conditions at SAAO/Sutherland justify the erection of a 3.5 m telescope and also to compare Sutherland with the Gamsberg/Namibia site, a seeing campaign covering 15 months has been carried out. For direct comparison with the results of the seeing campaign at Gamsberg twenty years before the same QUESTAR telescope was employed. The seeing is determined by the scattering of the star-trail exposed on a film in the focal plane of the telescope. The campaign commenced in February 1992. Up to May 1993, data for 204 nights, that is 47.3% of the total number of nights, were collected. Due to wind speeds above 30 km h-1, 25 out of the 204 nights were not considered in the final reduction. The useful 179 nights are evenly distributed over the campaign period. The median seeing value for the whole period is = 0.52. There are differences during the year: the best season gives = 0.42, the worst = 0.67. Each night was divided into three intervals, although data for each of the three intervals were not always available. Generally, there is an improvement in the seeing during the course of a night. The results are compared to the seeing values of Gamsberg/Namibia and ESO/La Silla.  相似文献
