Abstract– Transmission electron microscopy examination of 87 large fragments from 16 carrot‐shaped and bulbous Stardust (SD) tracks was performed to study the range and diversity of materials present in comet Wild 2. Olivines and low‐Ca pyroxenes represent the largest proportions of fragments observed; however, a wide range of minerals and rocks were found including probable ferromagnesian, Al‐rich and Si‐rich chondrule fragments, a refractory inclusion, possible matrix mineral/lithic clasts, and probable condensate minerals. These materials, combined with fine‐grained components in the tracks, are analogous to components in unequilibrated chondrite meteorites and cluster interplanetary dust particles (IDPs). Two unusual lithologies in the bulbous tracks are only observed in chondritic porous IDPs and may have direct links to IDPs. The absence of phyllosilicates indicates that comet Wild 2 may be a “dry” comet that did not accrete or form significant amounts of hydrated phases. Some large mineral fragments in the SD tracks are analogous to large mineral IDPs. The large variations of the coarse‐grained components within and between all 16 tracks show that comet Wild 2 is mineralogically diverse and unequilibrated on nearly all scales and must have accreted materials from diverse source regions that were widely dispersed throughout the solar nebula.  相似文献

Accurate estimates of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) are critical for the development of realistic models of plant productivity. However, in many areas such as the vast Amazon region of South America, there have been few empirical studies of PAR. Here, we analyzed the relationship between PAR and broadband solar irradiance (R s) and formulated models to estimate PAR in two experimental sites (pasture and forest) in the Brazilian Amazon. Three different models of increasing complexity were developed based on information from R s (model 1), R s and clearness index (k t; model 2), and R s, k t, and water vapor pressure (model 3). Estimates of PAR were generated for each season and for the entire year. All models had very high determination coefficients and indices of agreement for both pasture and forest sites. This strongly supports the use of R s and k t to produce robust estimates of PAR. The results obtained by annual models were close than that found by seasonal models, demonstrating that a single annual model is able to estimate PAR, albeit with lower accuracy.  相似文献

Basement rocks comprising ortho- and paragneisses and schists whose tectono-metamorphic evolution is poorly known, are exposed in the Sierras de Umango, Maz-Espinal and Las Ramaditas, in the northwest of the La Rioja Province, Argentina. These units were included in the Maz, El Taco, El Zaino complexes, as well as the Tambillos Metamorphics that would be part of the northern end of the Cuyania terrane, a microcontinent derived from Laurentia that collided with Western Gondwana during the early Paleozoic, or belong to the active margin of the continent. To recognize rocks belonging to each of these tectonic units and to understand the history and physical conditions of accretion were some of the main goals of the multidisciplinary investigation whose preliminary results are presented here. Geochemical studies, trace and REE elements and Sm-Nd model ages allowed the recognition of several episodes of crustal accretion in these rocks. The oldest one occurred at ca. 2.2 Ga in an arc/back-arc environment along the eastern segment of the Sierra de Maz, and was possibly coeval with development of a early Proterozoic continental crust that acted as source to sediments of Maz Complex. The following episode of crustal accretion that formed rocks in this region was at ca. 1.4 Ga and is registered by tonalites emplaced in an extensional environment cropping out in the western flank of the Sierra del Espinal.

In the Sierra de Umango, an arc/back-arc sequence registered an episode of crustal accretion during the Grenvillian Cycle (ca. 1.3 Ga). The last episode of crustal accretion detected in this area (800 Ma) is represented by an old alkaline volcanism in the Sierra de Umango. This episode could be representing the first stage of break-up of the Rodinia supercontinent during the Neoproterozoic.

The metamorphic grade reached by these rocks is mostly represented by fabrics with mineral assemblages of intermediate to high pressures and high temperatures, typical of collisional environments. The oldest rock-forming fabrics tectono-metamorphic episode recognized is of middle Proterozoic age (ca. 1.04 to 0.969 Ga, garnet-whole-rock Sm/Nd age) being registered by metapelites from Maz Complex that attained temperatures of 650°C-6.3 kbar. A younger metamorphic event (463 Ma, garnet - whole-rock Sm/Nd age) is verified in metatonalites intrusive in these metapelites. Another metamorphic event at ca. 301 Ma (garnet-WR Sm/Nd age) was recognized in metasediments from El Taco Complex. Peak metamorphic conditions of this event, probably registering the last major tectonic episode that affected rocks of this area was established in 868°C-9.8 kbar. It is impossible to distinguish fabrics belonging to totally different tectonic episodes based on structural or metamorphic data. Therefore, distinction between major tectono-thermal events of totally different ages such as the high-T middle Proterozoic deformation and with N-NWestwards tectonic transport direction registered in the Sierras de Maz-Espinal and Umango from the youngest one (ca. 301 Ma) that attained the highest-P/T conditions, recognized in the Sierra de Las Ramaditas, had to be done on the basis of Sm/Nd ages.

Geophysical evidence indicates the presence of extensive WNW-oriented lineaments that separate basements blocks of different magnetic and gravimetric signatures that are thought to represent ancient Grenvillian age suture zones. On the other hand, the northern segment of the Valle Fértil lineament that runs between Sierras de Umango and Maz-Espinal is at present interpreted as marking the eastern boundary of the Cuyania terrane. This is supported by isotopic data as well as the contrasting history of tectono-metamorphic events as determined for both of these segments of the NW Sierras Pampeanas.  相似文献

Artemia populations were sampled in four hypersaline ecosystems in continental evaporitic basins from the Argentinean provinces of La Pampa and Buenos Aires. Biometrics of cysts and nauplii were performed. The morphometrics of adult females under standard culture conditions, studied by multivariate discriminant analysis, provided evidence that these populations belonged to the speciesA. persimilis; this was further supported by cross-breeding tests established between one of these populations (Salinas Grandes de Hidalgo, province of La Pampa) and a population ofA. franciscana from San Francisco Bay (California, USA), which showed reproductive isolation and barriers to gene flow between both populations.  相似文献

Spectrothermography, defined as the evaluation of thermograms of carbon evolved from heated aerosol samples, is a technique for evaluating differences in particle characteristics as they relate to emission sources and processes that modify particle evolution. Here we describe the inherent uncertainties and demonstrate the utility of this technique with an evaluation of samples that were collected with eight stage cascade impactors at three sites in Mexico City over a period of 5 months. The study was implemented with statistical analysis based on tests for goodness of fit to separate thermograms with distinctive shapes related to the relative amounts of organic and elemental carbon mass that evolves as a function of temperature. Thermograms with unique shapes were found for particles with aerodynamic diameters of 1–10, 0.56–1, 0.32–0.56 and 0.18–0.32 μm with further differentiation of curves related to the relative amounts of gasoline and diesel fuel that was combusted in the region of the three sites. The common shapes fit 32–42% of samples in each particle size range and indicate that this type of analysis can help distinguish differences in the primary sources of organic and elemental carbon.

Climatology of water excesses and shortages in the La Plata Basin   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This study presents a multitemporal climatology of water excess and shortage during the 20th century in the La Plata Basin. The climatology is based on 0.5o?×?0.5o grid across the region. We transform monthly precipitation series for each point into index series at different time scales using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI). A month is under water excess (shortage) conditions at different time scales (i?=?6, 9, 12, and 18 months), when SPI[i](j)?>?1.5 (SPI[i](j)?<?1.5), where j is the current month. Trends in precipitation were determined using mean regional series of average values over the entire basin. A month when more than 30% of the total basin is under water excesses (shortages) is defined as an excess (shortage) critical month. From the vulnerability point of view, we analyzed the occurrence of critical months. The number of excess critical months increase with time scale of index, and almost all the critical months occurred after 1950 as a consequence of the low-frequency precipitation pattern. That means a noticeable increase in the vulnerability to extended excesses (more than 30% of the area under water excesses) after 1950, especially over the Upper Paraná and the Uruguay basins. For shortage critical months, the behavior depends on time scales. At large time scale (18 and 12 months), almost all the shortage critical months occurred in the period 1901–1950 and only at shorter time scale (9 and 6 months), some critical months appeared after 1950. That means a noteworthy decrease in the basin vulnerability to extended water shortage after 1950 and a moderate decrease in vulnerability to generalized shortage. If we analyze the frequency and mean duration of water excess and shortage events across the basin, we can appreciate that there is a tendency to relate higher frequency regions with regions with lower mean duration events, and conversely.  相似文献

The Guarguaraz Complex in West Argentina formed during collision between the microplate Chilenia and South America. It is composed of neritic clastic metasediments with intercalations of metabasic and ultrabasic rocks of oceanic origin. Prograde garnet growth in metapelite and metabasite occurred between 1.2 GPa, 470°C and 1.4 GPa, 530°C, when the penetrative s2-foliation was formed. The average age of garnet crystallization of 390 ± 2 Ma (2σ) was determined from three four-point Lu–Hf mineral isochrones from metapelite and metabasite samples and represents the time of collision. Peak pressure conditions are followed by a decompression path with slight heating at 0.5 GPa, 560°C. Fluid release during decompression caused equilibration of mineral compositions at the rims and also aided Ar diffusion. An 40Ar/39Ar plateau age of white mica at 353 ± 1 Ma (1σ) indicates the time of cooling below 350–400°C. These temperatures were attained at pressures of 0.2–0.3 GPa, indicative of an average exhumation rate of ≥1 mm/a for the period 390–353 Ma. Late hydrous influx at 0.1–0.3 GPa caused pervasive growth of sericite and chlorite and reset the Ar/Ar ages of earlier coarse-grained white mica. At 284–295 Ma, the entire basement cooled below 280°C (fission track ages of zircon) after abundant post-collisional granitoid intrusion. The deeply buried epicontinental sedimentary rocks, the high peak pressure referring to a low metamorphic geotherm of 10–12°C/km, and the decompression/heating path are characteristics of material buried and exhumed within a (micro) continent–continent collisional setting.  相似文献

The geochemistry, mineralogy, and grain size distribution of several estuarine cohesive sediment samples from potentially human-influenced areas without such an influence were analyzed to determine the natural heavy metal content and evaluate its impact on the Bahía Blanca estuarine environment. The data were compared with different ranges of concentrations for heavy metals in marine sediments established by the NOAA Screening Quick Reference Tables in which values range from background levels to those considered toxic to the marine environment. Our total heavy metal contents were below the established hazardous levels in all the analyzed samples, even though the potentially human-influenced areas (harbors, industry, urban spread) showed the highest total concentration values as well as greater percentages of bioavailable compounds. This would imply a low and not extensive anthropogenic input into the environment. The relatively high proportions in which Cd, Pb, and Cr appear as bioavailable compounds at some sites not influenced by human activity suggest the presence of a natural source for these elements. This could be attributed to the weathering of naturally occurring volcanic minerals, indicating that special care must be taken when monitoring of sediment for anthropogenic activity is carried out within this environment. According to the results obtained, and in order to minimize the environmental impact caused by periodic water injection dredging, relocation of sewage outfalls from vessel mooring areas into open waters is strongly recommended.  相似文献

Precipitation is one of the main components of the hydrological cycle and knowledge of its spatial distribution is fundamental for the prediction of other closely related environmental variables, for example, runoff, flooding and aquifer recharge. Most of the precipitation in Mexico City is due to convective storms characterized by a high spatial variability, implying that modeling its behavior is very complex. In this work stochastic simulation techniques with a geostatistical approach were applied to model the spatial variability of the rainfall of three convective storms. The analysis of the results shows that using the proposed methodology spatial distributions of rain are obtained that reproduce the statistical characteristics present in the available information.  相似文献

Abstract– Coordinated in situ transmission electron microscopy and isotopic measurements of carbonaceous phases in interplanetary dust particles were performed to determine their origins. Five different types of carbonaceous materials were identified based on their morphology and texture, observed by transmission electron microscopy: globular, vesicular, dirty, spongy, and smooth. Flash heating experiments were performed to explore whether some of these morphologies are the result of atmospheric entry processes. Each of these morphologies was found to have isotopically anomalous H and N. Rare C isotopic anomalies were also observed. The isotopic and morphological properties of several of these phases, particularly the organic globules, are remarkably similar to those observed in other extraterrestrial materials including carbonaceous chondrites, comet 81P/Wild 2 particles collected by the Stardust spacecraft, and Antarctic micrometeorites, indicating that they were widespread in the early solar system. The ubiquitous nature and the isotopic anomalies of the nanoglobules and some other morphologies strongly suggest that these are very primitive phases. Given that some of the isotopic anomalies (D and 15N excesses) are indicative of mass fractionation chemical reactions in a very cold environment, and some others (13C and 15N depletions) have other origins, these carbonaceous phases come from different reservoirs. Whatever their origins, these materials probably reflect the first stages of the evolution of solar system organic matter, having originated in the outermost regions of the protosolar disk and/or interstellar cold molecular clouds.  相似文献
