Neutron activation analysis has been used to determine the concentration of tin in the U.S.G.S. diabase W-1, the six new U.S.G.S. standards G-2, GSP-1, AGV-1, PCC-1, DTS-1, and BCR-1, and in the standard tonalite T-1. Reproducibility is good for duplicate analyses, but there are differences from previously reported data.  相似文献

The majority of original seismograms recorded at the very beginning of instrumental seismology (the early 1900s) did not survive till present. However, a number of books, bulletins, and catalogs were published including the seismogram reproductions of some, particularly interesting earthquakes. In case these reproductions contain the time and amplitude scales, they can be successfully analyzed the same way as the original records. Information about the Atushi (Kashgar) earthquake, which occurred on August 22, 1902, is very limited. We could not find any original seismograms for this earthquake, but 12 seismograms from 6 seismic stations were printed as example records in different books. These data in combination with macroseismic observations and different bulletins information published for this earthquake were used to determine the source parameters of the earthquake. The earthquake epicenter was relocated at 39.87° N and 76.42° E with the hypocenter depth of about 18 km. We could further determine magnitudes m B = 7.7 ± 0.3, M S = 7.8 ± 0.4, M W = 7.7 ± 0.3 and the focal mechanism of the earthquake with strike/dip/rake ? 260°± 20/30°± 10/90°± 10. This study confirms that the earthquake likely had a smaller magnitude than previously reported (M8.3). The focal mechanism indicates dominant thrust faulting, which is in a good agreement with presumably responsible Tuotegongbaizi-Aerpaleike northward dipping thrust fault kinematic, described in previous studies.  相似文献

A main task of weather services is the issuing of warnings for potentially harmful weather events. Automated warning guidances can be derived, e.g., from statistical post-processing of numerical weather prediction using meteorological observations. These statistical methods commonly estimate the probability of an event (e.g. precipitation) occurring at a fixed location (a point probability). However, there are no operationally applicable techniques for estimating the probability of precipitation occurring anywhere in a geographical region (an area probability). We present an approach to the estimation of area probabilities for the occurrence of precipitation exceeding given thresholds. This approach is based on a spatial stochastic model for precipitation cells and precipitation amounts. The basic modeling component is a non-stationary germ-grain model with circular grains for the representation of precipitation cells. Then, we assign a randomly scaled response function to each precipitation cell and sum these functions up to obtain precipitation amounts. We derive formulas for expectations and variances of point precipitation amounts and use these formulas to compute further model characteristics based on available sequences of point probabilities. Area probabilities for arbitrary areas and thresholds can be estimated by repeated Monte Carlo simulation of the fitted precipitation model. Finally, we verify the proposed model by comparing the generated area probabilities with independent rain gauge adjusted radar data. The novelty of the presented approach is that, for the first time, a widely applicable estimation of area probabilities is possible, which is based solely on predicted point probabilities (i.e., neither precipitation observations nor further input of the forecaster are necessary). Therefore, this method can be applied for operational weather predictions.  相似文献

Recent changes in ocean temperature have impacted marine ecosystem function globally. Nevertheless, the responses have depended upon the rate of change of temperature and the season when the changes occur, which are spatially variable. A rigorous statistical analysis of sea surface temperature observations over 25 years was used to examine spatial variability in overall and seasonal temperature trends within the wider Caribbean. The basin has experienced high spatial variability in rates of change of temperature. Most of the warming has been due to increases in summer rather than winter temperatures. However, warming was faster in winter in the Loop Current area and the south-eastern Caribbean, where the annual temperature ranges have contracted. Waters off Florida, Cuba and the Bahamas had a tendency towards cooling in winter, increasing the amplitude of annual temperature ranges. These detailed patterns can be used to elucidate ecological responses to climatic change in the region.  相似文献

Over a 1-year period, 343 samples, including precipitation, creek, pond, and groundwater, were collected from June 2003 to May 2004. Analyses were performed for stable oxygen and hydrogen isotope compositions. Selected samples were also analyzed for tritium. The goal was to identify possible hydrologic factors contributing to a severe landslide in the Li-Shan area, central Taiwan. The isotope characteristics indicate that groundwater from Fu-Shou-Shan farm located up-slope from the landslide area is a major source for slope groundwater, in addition to precipitation. The groundwater is mainly recharged by pond water at Fu-Shou-Shan farm. According to the calculation of a two-end member equation with δ 18O, the contribution of farm groundwater to slope groundwater is significantly higher than that of precipitation, up to a factor of five. The estimated drainage efficiency of the existing system is only 23%. Draining off the slope groundwater in the up-slope region to decrease farm groundwater flow into the slope area is a feasible strategy to effectively reduce the risk of landslide.  相似文献

Detailed simulations have been made of the search for clusters of galaxies during the ROSAT all-sky x-ray survey (0.1–2 keV). The simulations use a conservative estimate of the cluster luminosity function to create an x-ray catalog specifying cluster position, redshift, flux, temperature and angular extent. This is used in combination with realistic models of the ROSAT scanning motion and of the background due to particles, cosmic x-rays and scattered solar x-rays, to build a simulated ROSAT data base. The data base has been subjected to the ROSAT source search algorithms and the results analyzed. Two cases were considered, a 2-degree wide great circle strip representing the general survey, and a region within 10 degrees of the ecliptic pole, where the exposure is unusually high. We present estimates of the minimum number of clusters to be detected, the fraction recognized as extended x-ray sources, and the minimum detectable energy flux from clusters during the survey.  相似文献

Sulphide mineralisation associated with rocks from the Palaeoproterozoic Olary Domain (OD) and overlying Neoproterozoic Adelaidean sequences has undergone a complex history of metamorphism and remobilisation. In this study, new trace element and sulphur isotopic analyses of pyrites from a large number of deposits and paragenetic generations are combined with an existing data set to build up a sequence of mineralising events linked to the tectonometamorphic evolution of the region. The typically high Co/Ni ratios (>10) indicate that early strata-bound pyrite precipitated from a volcanic-related fluid, which had fluctuating activities of the two metals during the early stages of the evolution of the Willyama basin. This period of mineralisation was followed by a diagenetic concentration of sulphide mineralisation at the horizon known as the Bimba Formation, which occurred as a result of the differing redox conditions between the upper and lower sequences in the Willyama Supergroup. During the Mesoproterozoic (1600 to 1500 Ma) Olarian Orogeny, metamorphic remobilisation of strata-bound pyrite resulted in an epigenetic signature; the trace element concentrations of this generation were controlled primarily by the proximity of mineralisation to the mafic intrusive bodies found throughout the terrane. Further reworking of existing sulphides during the Delamerian Orogeny and associated granitoid-intrusive rocks led to the formation of a new generation of epigenetic pyrite that occurs in quartz veins in the Adelaidean sequences and veins that crosscut Olarian fabrics in the Olary Domain. δ34S results range from 16‰ to 11‰, but most data fall between 2‰ and 4‰. This association is suggestive of an initial uniform deep-seated crustal reservoir of sulphur, which has been repeatedly tapped throughout the metallogenic history of the region. The isotopic outliers can be explained by the input of biogenic sulphur or sulphur derived from oxidised, possibly evaporitic, sediments, respectively. Previous workers have invoked the Kupferschiefer and the Zambian Copperbelt as analogues to mineralisation processes in the Olary Domain. This study shows that δ34S and trace element data are suggestive of some affinities with the aforementioned analogues, but a more likely link can be made between epigenetic remobilisation in the Olary region and the iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) style of mineralisation found at the nearby Olympic Dam deposit.  相似文献

The specific interaction model has been used to determine the partial molal volume of electrolytes in 0.725 m NaCl and 35‰ salinity seawater solutions at 25°C. The partial molal volumes of electrolytes (MX) were estimated at a given ionic strength (I) from

, where SV is the Debye-Hückel limiting law slope, vi is the number of ions i formed when MX dissociated, [i] is the total molality of ion i and BMX is a specific interaction parameter that varies slowly with ionic strength. The values of V(MX) estimated by using this equation were found to agree very well with experimental values in NaCl and seawater providing there are not strong interactions between M and X. For electrolytes that form ion pairs (i.e. MX°) corrections must be made. Methods are discussed for making these corrections.  相似文献
