Manta rays inhabit tropical, subtropical and temperate waters. Aggregation sites of manta rays have been recognized worldwide, but the reasons for this behavior are still poorly understood. This study describes environmental factors influencing aggregation sites of the giant manta ray (Manta birostris) off the northeastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. Observations of manta rays were obtained from scientific surveys conducted during 2006–2011. Environmental data were obtained from satellite imagery. The maximum entropy (Maxent) method for habitat modeling was used to determine the effects of environmental conditions on the species and predict suitable habitat for manta rays in this region. Primary productivity and distance to the coast were the most influential variables, suggesting that aggregation occurs in highly productive coastal waters. The distribution of manta rays predicted by the Maxent model showed that the most suitable habitat within the study area is located off the northeastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, more precisely, northeast of Isla Holbox and northwest of Isla Contoy. Seasonal patterns of distribution suggest that the most suitable conditions are present from July through September.  相似文献

This paper presents a hydrodynamic characterization of helically coiled tube flocculators (HCTFs) through streamline analysis and an efficiency evaluation of the flocculation process in these units. Physical experiment and CFD modeling allowed to relate flocculation process (estimated indirectly by analyzing turbidity removal efficiency for low turbidity values and low Reynolds numbers) and hydrodynamic characteristics observed along the unit (represented in this study by streamlines). This work analyzes streamline features and proposes the use of a new global hydrodynamic parameter \(\overline{{E_{\text{k}} }}\), concerning the average specific kinetic energy in a representative streamline of the unit, aiming to compare hydrodynamic characteristics in units with distinct hydraulic and geometric characteristics. Results show that this parameter has a strong adherence with the maximum turbidity removal efficiency observed in HCTFs. Moreover, it was possible to define an optimum range of velocity variation cycles in the representative streamline to achieve the maximum turbidity removal efficiency. This result indicates that knowledge of HCTFs streamlines’ characteristics can support the rational design of this type of unit.  相似文献

The calcarean sponge Paraleucilla magna is classified as being an invasive species on the Mediterranean Sea, where it causes economic damages to mollusc farms. On the Brazilian coast, this species is considered to be cryptogenic, and information on its ecology is scarce. The same is true for Sycettusa hastifera, another calcarean sponge with a worldwide distribution. Data on the ecology of these species could help in elucidating their potential to become a threat if they are found to be exotic species in Brazil. In the present work, we studied habitat selection, growth and mortality of early juveniles of P. magna and habitat selection of S. hastifera in a Marine Reserve from Southeastern Brazil, where these species are abundant in the benthic community. Granite plates were used for habitat selection analysis, varying in substrate inclination (vertical and horizontal) and exposure to light and hydrodynamism (exposed and sheltered). To analyse the growth and mortality rates, sponges were mapped and then measured once a week for 10 weeks. If a monitored sponge was not found in the following week, it was considered to be dead. Our results showed that, although P. magna and S. hastifera are capable of inhabiting substrates exposed to different environmental conditions, they showed habitat preferences. Growth of the juveniles of P. magna seemed not to have damaged any neighbouring invertebrates. The mortality of juveniles of this species was higher during the first 2 weeks of life but its causes could not be elucidated.  相似文献

Ionospheric scintillations are fluctuations in the phase and/or amplitude of trans-ionospheric radio signals caused by electron density irregularities in the ionosphere. A better understanding of the scintillation pattern is important to make a better assessment of GPS receiver performance, for instance. Additionally, scintillation can be used as a tool for remote sensing of ionospheric irregularities. Therefore, the study of ionospheric scintillation has both scientific as well as technological implications. In the past few years, there has been a significant advance in the methods for analysis of scintillation and in our understanding of the impact of scintillation on GPS receiver performance. In this work, we revisit some of the existing methods of analysis of scintillation, propose an alternative approach, and apply these techniques in a comprehensive study of the characteristics of amplitude scintillation. This comprehensive study made use of 32?days of high-rate (50?Hz) measurements made by a GPS-based scintillation monitor located in S?o José dos Campos, Brazil (23.2°S, 45.9°W, ?17.5° dip latitude) near the Equatorial Anomaly during high solar flux conditions. The variability of the decorrelation time (τ0) of scintillation patterns is presented as a function of scintillation severity index (S 4). We found that the values of τ0 tend to decrease with the increase of S 4, confirming the results of previous studies. In addition, we found that, at least for the measurements made during this campaign, averaged values of τ0 (for fixed S 4 index values) did not vary much as a function of local time. Our results also indicate a significant impact of τ0 in the GPS carrier loop performance for S 4?≥?0.7. An alternative way to compute the probability of cycle slip that takes into account the fading duration time is also presented. The results of this approach show a 38% probability of cycle slips during strong scintillation scenarios (S 4 close to 1 and τ0 near 0.2?s). Finally, we present results of an analysis of the individual amplitude fades observed in our set of measurements. This analysis suggests that users operating GPS receivers with C/N 0 thresholds around 30?dB-Hz and above can be affected significantly by low-latitude scintillation.  相似文献

Lastarria volcano (25°10′ S, 68°31′ W; 5,697 m above sea level), located in the Central Andes Volcanic Zone (northern Chile), is characterized by four distinct fumarolic fields with outlet temperatures ranging between 80°C and 408°C as measured between May 2006–March 2008 and April–June 2009. Fumarolic gasses contain significant concentrations of high temperature gas compounds (i.e., SO2, HCl, HF, H2, and CO), and isotopic ratios (3He/4He, δ13C–CO2, δ18O–H2O, and δD–H2O) diagnostic of magmatic gas sources. Gas equilibria systematics, in both the H2O-H2-CO2-CO-CH4 and alkane–alkene C3 system, suggest that Lastarria fumarolic gasses emanate from a superheated vapor that is later cooled and condensed at relatively shallow depths. This two-stage process inhibits the formation of a continuous aquifer (e.g., horizontal liquid layer) at relatively shallow depth. Recent developments in the magmatic gas system may have enhanced the transfer and release of heat causing shallow aquifer vaporization. The consequent pressure increase and aquifer vaporization likely triggered the inflation events beginning in 2003 at the Lastarria volcano.  相似文献

The economical and ecological importance of tidal inlets has fostered the development of empirical tools for inlet management during the last century. This study aims at confronting these empirical theories with results obtained with a process-based numerical model, MORSYS2D. This 2DH morphodynamic modeling system is applied to an idealized tidal inlet/lagoon system with different combinations of significant wave height, tidal range and tidal prism. The numerical model predictions are compared to the empirical models of Hayes, Bruun, O'Brien and FitzGerald and to morphologies observed at natural tidal inlets. The results present good accordance with observations as well as with some key behaviors predicted with the empirical theories. The predicted morphologies satisfy the relation of O'Brien between the tidal prism and the cross-sectional area, the model reproduces the conceptual model of sand by-passing by ebb-tidal delta breaching of FitzGerald and the classifications of Hayes and Bruun are generally respected. However, some inconsistencies between model results and Hayes classification highlight the limitations of applying this classification, which only considers the yearly-averaged significant wave height and tidal range, to a single tidal inlet case.  相似文献

Fresh and preserved (type material) specimens of the black ghost chimaera Hydrolagus melanophasma were compared for morphometric characteristics. A molecular comparison was also performed on two mitochondrial gene sequences (12S rRNA and 16S rRNA gene sequences). While significant differences in measurements were found, the differences were not attributable to sexual dimorphism or the quality of the specimens, but to the sample size and the type of statistical tests. The result of the genetic characterization showed that 12S rRNA and 16S rRNA genes represented robust molecular markers that characterized the species.  相似文献

The Castelo dos Sonhos Formation (CSF) represents a relic of a sedimentary basin located in the southeastern Tapajós Gold Province (TGP), at its boundary with the Iriri–Xingu Domain (IX), south of the Amazonian Craton. The formation comprises mature, coarse-grained metasandstones (quartz-arenites) intercalated with auriferous metaconglomerates with clasts of quartz and subordinately of banded iron formation, quartzite, schist, and felsic metavolcanic rocks. Lithology, planar, channelled, and large-scale cross-bedding suggest deposition in continental setting by the braided fluvial system associated with alluvial fans and subordinate aeolian dunes. The rocks underwent very low metamorphism and gently synformal folding, and were intruded by andesites and granitoids (2011–1918 Ma). U–Pb LA-ICP-MS zircon data indicate maximum depositional ages of 2050 Ma (metaconglomerate) and 2074, 2088, and 2104 Ma (metasandstones). Hence, deposition occurred at 2050–2011 Ma, slightly preceding or being coeval with the onset of the orogenic phase in TGP (2030–1956 Ma). The quartz-arenite composition, zircon U–Pb data, and negative εHf (?1.3 to ?13.0) and εNd (?2.9 to ?5.3) values indicate: (1) quartzose provenance, (2) prolonged transport and recycling of sedimentary sources, (3) multiple age peaks (2050–3700 Ma), with predominant sources of 2100 and 2750 Ma, and (4) long crustal residence time for the source rocks. Source areas were Rhyacian–Siderian orogenic belts to Mesoarchaean terranes of the Amazonian Craton located to the east, southeast, and northeast of TGP, along with Palaeoarchaean and Eoarchaean detrital zircons recycled from older sedimentary rocks. We interpret CSF as part of a larger foreland system related to the evolution of Rhyacian orogens, currently represented by the Bacajá and Santana do Araguaia domains. The present location of CSF in the easternmost TGP, close to its boundary with IX, is due to rifting (1.89–1.80 Ga) that produced the Uatumã Silicic Large Igneous Province (Uatumã SLIP), and the juxtaposition of the crustal domains is supported by gravity data.  相似文献
