Boron concentration data on 69 different biological, coal and geological reference materials issued by NBS, USGS and CCRMP have been collected from 1951-1986. Data from 135 journal articles and technical reports are included. These data are summarized in consensus (mean) values with uncertainties expressed as pm one standard deviation. The isotopic composition of Sr has been measured in brine samples from the Upper Jurassic Smackover Formation in southern Arkansas; ratios range from 0.7071 to 0.7101. With one exception, the 32 Smackover brines contain Sr which is significantly more radiogenic than the Sr in Late Jurassic sea water, indicating sizable Sr contributions from detrital sources. Isotopic analyses of core samples from rock units associated with the brines and regional stratigraphic relationships suggest that the radiogenic Sr was released from detrital minerals in Bossier shale to interstitial fluids expelled from the underlying Louann Salt in the North Louisiana salt basin. These fluids migrated through the Bossier Formation updip to the South Arkansas shelf, where they entered the upper Smackover carbonate grainstone. The radiogenic fluids mixed with Sr-rich interstitial marine waters that had the isotopic composition of Late Jurassic sea water; mixing in variable proportions resulted in the random distribution pattern of variable ratios that is observed in Smackover brines within the 5000 km2 study area. Isotopic analyses of nonskeletal carbonate grains and coexisting coarse calcspar cement from the upper Smackover grainstone imply that the grains were diagenetically stabilized in the presence of interstitial marine waters, whereas the calcspar cement is a relatively late diagenetic phase precipitated after the arrival of radiogenic fluids. 相似文献

In situ ecosystem gas exchange measurements were taken monthly for a 15-month period during low tide forJuncus roemerianus Scheele and short, medium, and tall height forms ofSpartina alterniflora Loisel. in three salt marshes near Southport, North Carolina. Multiple regression analysis was used to obtain empirical relationships betwen gas exchange values and the physical and biotic variables measured. Preliminary models for net ecosystem photosynthesis, ecosystem respiration, and respiration of aboveground standing crop were developed. Validation of models was carried out in the following manner: (1) net primary productivity of aboveground standing crop was calculated from model data and compared with harvest estimates of net primary productivity for the same year; and (2) carbon exchange and energy efficiency values were compared with literature values. In general, theSpartina models, because of their larger data base, were more useful than theJuncus models. Annual primary productivity of aboveground standing crop calculated from gas exchange values was 1.8 to 3.6 times greater forSpartian than values calculated from harvest data by Smalley's method.Juncus values were approximately equal. Since values calculated from carbon data and harvest data are not entirely equivalent, required adjustments to the carbon values are discussed. Both species have two growth periods—one in ths pring and one in the fall—with the spring growth in excess of that in the fall. Net ecosystem productivity was highest in the spring and lowest in the summer. Ecosystem respiration amounted to 71% of gross annual photosynthesis. The aboveground standing crop contributed approximately 35% to this ecosystem respiration and the soil, the remaining 36%. Efficiency for gross photosynthesis per unit of solar radiation ranged from 0.22 to 1.11%. Efficiencies for net primary production of aboveground standing crop ranged from 0 to 0.82% and those of net ecosystem production from 0 to 0.56%. 相似文献

Analyses of meteorites for B abundances have shown that many chondrites are contaminated with terrestrial B, producing erroneously high meteoritic abundances of this element. Boron concentrations in freshly prepared interior samples are significantly lower than they are in samples with unknown or unspecified terrestrial histories. An estimate of the cosmic abundance based upon the analyses of 8 interior samples of 2 carbonaceous chondrites and 1 interior sample of each of 8 ordinary chondrites is a factor of 6.7 less than the previous low estimate. Our revised value, 3.0 B/1010H, is in excellent agreement with estimates based on observations of the solar photosphere. There is no longer a need to consider processes that enrich B in carbonaceous chondrites or deplete it in the sun. Relative meteoritic abundances of Li, Be and B are now in general agreement with models of nucleosynthesis of these light elements by galactic cosmic ray induced spallation. 相似文献

Heavy metal profiles below a 15-year old sanitary landfill overlying a 30 m thick natural clay deposit are presented. Results indicate that unlike soluble species such as Cl− and Na+ which have migrated distances up to 130 cm, Cu, Zn and Pb have migrated only up to 10 cm. The extent of Fe migration is estimated to be 20 cm. Highly reducing conditions at the interface (Eh= −130mV), coupled with the alkaline nature of the clay pore waters, have resulted in the precipitation of migrated heavy metals as carbonates. At the clay/waste interface, 88, 84 and 80% of the excess Fe, Zn and Pb, respectively, are present as secondary carbonates. This is confirmed by selective chemical dissolution analyses which also show that Fe, Zn, Pb and, to a greater extent, Cu are present in solid organic forms at the interface. Batch equilibrium studies clearly show that Cu and Pb removal from leachate is significantly increased by the presence of carbonates in the soil. For example, 75% more Pb is removed by the carbonate-rich bulk soil than the carbonate-free soil. The batch studies also show that when thepH> 5.2, removal of metal increases significantly due to precipitation as carbonates. From the results it is concluded that the presence of metal sludges in landfills lined naturally or artifically by a carbonate-rich clayey barrier reduces the rate of migration of numerous toxic transition metals and may also decrease the barrier porosity by precipitation. The decreases in porosity will be beneficial to the performance of the barrier due to reductions in both advection and diffusion. 相似文献

Structured properly, such a database becomes a dynamic tool for cataloguing specimens and recording associated site data. Inorganic sediment is not the only solid-fraction component of river flows; flows may also carry significant amounts of large organic material (i.e. large wood), but the characteristics of these wood-laden flows (WLFs) are not well understood yet. With the aim to shed light on these relatively unexamined phenomena, we collected home videos showing natural flows with wood as the main solid component. Analyses of these videos as well as the watersheds and streams where the videos were recorded allowed us to define for the first time WLFs, describe the main characteristics of these flows and broaden the definition of wood transport regimes (adding a new regime called here hypercongested wood transport). According to our results, WLFs may occur repeatedly, in a large range of catchment sizes, generally in steep, highly confined single thread channels in mountain areas. WLFs are typically highly unsteady and the log motion is non-uniform, as described for other inorganic sediment-laden flows (e.g. debris flows). The conceptual integration of wood into our understanding of flow phenomena is illustrated by a novel classification defining the transition from clear water to hypercongested, wood and sediment-laden flows, according to the composition of the mixture (sediment, wood, and water). We define the relevant metrics for the quantification and modelling of WLFs, including an exhaustive discussion of different modelling approaches (i.e. Voellmy, Bingham and Manning) and provide a first attempt to simulate WLFs. We draw attention to WLF phenomena to encourage further field, theoretical, and experimental investigations that may contribute to a better understanding of flows in river basins, leading to more accurate predictions, and better hazard mitigation and management strategies. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献
