Infiltration is the single most important parameter in deriving the net quick response rainfall which contributes to stream flood discharges. Rainfall simulation is used to study the infiltration characteristics in a typical catchment, the Six Mile Water in N. Ireland. The design of the simulator was such that it could be easily moved from one test area to another within the catchment to examine the effect of soil and slope variation. The simulator was first calibrated in controlled laboratory conditions and later the calibration was checked in the field. The simulator was mounted over an undisturbed plot of 37 m2 and the surface runoff from the area measured by means of a collecting channel located along a lower edge of the plot. Soil moisture variations were monitored using a soil moisture neutron probe. Soil classification tests and gravimetric moisture contents were carried out on each plot. The field tests were carried out with variations in rainfall intensity, initial conditions, changing seasons, and for different plots within the catchment area. The results obtained are unique in that they present data obtained under field conditions for undisturbed soil within a natural catchment. The infiltration behaviour was found to depend upon rainfall intensity, initial conditions of the plot under consideration, seasonal temperature, and a slope of the plot. The data showed that while a classical Horton type equation for infiltration was suitable for the later stages of each test result when significant surface runoff was taking place, the model failed to represent early response adequately due to storage effects being omitted in the equation. A modified form of Horton equation is proposed, which models more accurately the infiltration characteristics of the full period of each test run.  相似文献

The Ba2+ ion adsorption isotherms on β-MnO2 were of the Langmuir type. The endothermic heat of adsorption (40 kJ mol?1) is ascribed to entropy contributions associated with the Na+Ba2+ ion-exchange mechanism. The Ba2+ ion adsorption density was higher at pH 10 than that at pH 7, due to the more negative surface charge at the higher pH. Ba2+ ions were found to reverse the sign of the ζ potential of the MnO2 particles.More oleate was adsorbed by β-MnO2 in the presence of Ba2+ ions than in their absence. The oleate adsorption isotherms on Ba2+-activated MnO2 were of the Freundlich type and indicated an exothermic process. Hallimond flotation recovery of Ba2+-activated MnO2 was higher at pH 10 than at pH 7, although less oleate was adsorbed at the higher pH. At pH 7, Mn2+-activation led to higher recoveries than Ba2+-activation. It seems that the attraction between the surface and the activator plays an important rôle in determining the flotation recovery.  相似文献

Water samples for chemical analyses were collected in January 2012. A total of 72 samples of groundwater were collected from 72 boreholes in the Midyan Basin, northwestern Saudi Arabia. Samples were collected in polyethylene bottles and preserved and the used analytical techniques were in accordance with the standard methods from American public health association. Geochemical analyses of the groundwater samples from Midyan Basin reveal the concentration of fluoride (F) between 0.98 and 2.1 mg/l. Other parameters, e.g, pH, EC, TDS, HCO3, SO4, NO3, Cl, K, Na, Mg, and Ca have been found in a variable proportion. Among them, the concentration of EC, HCO3, K, Na and Mg is higher than the permissible limits. According to thermodynamical considerations, most of the analysed samples are graded under-saturated with respect to calcite and fluoride, while saturation has been observed in some samples. The under-saturation could probably be attributed to low concentration of calcite and fluoride in the studied wells. Fluoride concentration shows weak positive correlation with EC, TDS, Na, Cl, and SO4. Factors controlling the concentration of fluoride (F) in the studied samples are the area climate, water chemistry and the presence of accessory minerals in the rocks through which groundwater is circulating, besides the anthropogenic activities in the area.  相似文献

Beginning with a discussion of drought definitions, this review paper attempts to provide a review of fundamental concepts of drought, classification of droughts, drought indices, and the role of remote sensing and geographic information systems for drought evaluation. Owing to the rise in water demand and looming climate change, recent years have witnessed much focus on global drought scenarios. As a natural hazard, drought is best characterized by multiple climatological and hydrological parameters. An understanding of the relationships between these two sets of parameters is necessary to develop measures for mitigating the impacts of droughts. Droughts are recognized as an environmental disaster and have attracted the attention of environmentalists, ecologists, hydrologists, meteorologists, geologists, and agricultural scientists. Temperatures; high winds; low relative humidity; and timing and characteristics of rains, including distribution of rainy days during crop growing seasons, intensity, and duration of rain, and onset and termination, play a significant role in the occurrence of droughts. In contrast to aridity, which is a permanent feature of climate and is restricted to low rainfall areas, a drought is a temporary aberration. Often, there is confusion between a heat wave and a drought, and the distinction is emphasized between heat wave and drought, noting that a typical time scale associated with a heat wave is on the order of a week, while a drought may persist for months or even years. The combination of a heat wave and a drought has dire socio-economic consequences. Drought risk is a product of a region’s exposure to the natural hazard and its vulnerability to extended periods of water shortage. If nations and regions are to make progress in reducing the serious consequences of drought, they must improve their understanding of the hazard and the factors that influence vulnerability. It is critical for drought-prone regions to better understand their drought climatology (i.e., the probability of drought at different levels of intensity and duration) and establish comprehensive and integrated drought information system that incorporates climate, soil, and water supply factors such as precipitation, temperature, soil moisture, snow pack, reservoir and lake levels, ground water levels, and stream flow. All drought-prone nations should develop national drought policies and preparedness plans that place emphasis on risk management rather than following the traditional approach of crisis management, where the emphasis is on reactive, emergency response measures. Crisis management decreases self-reliance and increases dependence on government and donors.  相似文献

Lush Hyrcanian mixed temperate forests are globally important ecosystems with considerable ecological and economic values and high variety of ecosystem services (ES). In this study, an ES-based approach is adopted to develop a spatial conservation framework for Gorganrood Watershed, northeastern Iran. In doing so, the integrated valuation of ecosystem services and trade-offs modeling tool was implemented to spatially quantify a collection of five ES including soil retention, habitat quality (as a proxy for biodiversity), water yield, food supply and carbon storage. These services were integrated into a single layer based on the Total Ecosystem Services (TES) index. By performing correlation analyses, the type and the strength of relationships between ES, TES index values and different land features were analyzed to reveal which land-use categories at what locations are more capable to provide bundles of ES. Accordingly, Hyrcanian mixed temperate forests in the southern sub-watersheds of the area were detected to have higher potential for simultaneous provisioning of multiple ES. In addition, we show that biodiversity hotspots and provision of other ES are highly correlated and thus that conservation of one group can be beneficial for the other. Our findings are particularly applicable in areas where complex network of land-uses and limited resources are major barriers against effective conservation of Hyrcanian mixed temperate forests.  相似文献

The temporal distribution of the design storm is an important input in hydrological models. This research aims to develop design storm profiles representative of arid and hyper-arid areas based on actual storm recordings. Two hundred thirty-six rainfall storms were collected from seventeen rainfall gauges that cover the coastal zone of Oman for the period from 1993 to 2007. Storms were classified into four categories according to their total durations. Design storm hyetographs were derived from raw rainfall records for all four categories using the Alternating Block Method (ABM) and were also computed by ABM applied on the Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) curves. Both design storm profiles were compared and it was found that the ABM_IDF storm profiles were equivalent to the four ABM_Storms profiles from a practical point of view as they produce similar peak discharges. The storm profiles developed in the current research were also compared to the commonly used Soil Conservation Service (SCS) dimensionless distributions and the UK50 storm profiles. The results showed that the most conservative commonly used SCS type II and the UK50 summer profiles are not safe to be used in design purposes in arid and hyper arid regions, despite their wide utilization in many codes of practice in these regions. The study recommends using the newly developed dimensionless storm profiles derived from the actual records.  相似文献
