Simultaneous high time-resolution records at three wavelengths of the May 13, 1971 Jupiter occultation of Beta Scorpii are presented. These observations are unique and contain important information about the structure and composition of the Jovian atmosphere. An equally favorable Jupiter occultation should not occur again for several centuries.  相似文献

Measurements of the sidereal daily variation of the muon intensity at a depth of 60 m.w.e. have been carried out in London using telescopes inclined at 70° to the zenith for the period 1972 to the present. The direction of maximum sensitivity for these telescopes lies in the Earth's equatorial plane and the asymptotic directions of look at the boundary of the heliosphere have been determined by integrating the equation of motion of the primary particles in a model interplanetary magnetic field. In this way the measured sidereal variation can be related to the cosmic ray intensity distribution in interstellar space. It is shown that the observational data are consistent with an axially symmetric intensity distribution of the form ΔI = 0.09 (1 + cosα) % where ΔI is the direction from the mean intensity and α is measured from the direction of maximum intensity which lies at 1Π = 250° bΠ = ?60°. The most likely interpretation of this result is that the axis of this distribution corresponds to the local direction of the interstellar magnetic field and that the cosmic rays have a bulk streaming motion of 65±15 km s?1 along the field direction.  相似文献

We investigated and evaluated the occurrence of fault zone tracer gases (CO2, He, Rn), volatile organohalogens (CH3Cl, CHCl3, CHBr3), alkanes and limonene in soil and nest gases of red wood ants (RWA) in comparison to ambient air, in a seismically active area. In this new approach, we compared RWA-free areas to RWA-areas by combining different investigation and analytical methods. In soil gas, the fault zone tracer gas Rn was surprisingly highly correlated to limonene, suggesting a combination of biotic production of limonene and abiotic degassing of Rn in a seismically active area; moderate correlations were found with trihalomethanes and other halocarbons. In RWA nests a variety of elevated concentrations of haloforms were found, while remaining below the atmospheric background values in RWA-free areas. The evidence of CHCl3 in RWA nests is the first record. Its average concentrations in nests of F. rufa and F. polyctena were up to 3 fold higher than atmospheric background and up to 28–70 fold higher compared to e.g. volcanic emissions being considered as one of its main geogenic sources. Thus, RWA nests could possibly be an additional source for CHCl3 liberation. Consequently, apart from RWA being bioindicators for seismically active degassing faults, they might also be used as bioindicators for CHCl3 formation in forest soils. Although we cannot yet differentiate between a geogenic/abiotic and a biotic formation. RWA nests will have to be reconsidered for halocarbon formation in future quantifications of geochemical cycles at global scale, since they impact organic soil chemistry through biotic and/or abiotic pathways. Therefore, further larger-scale research in different tectonic settings but also in well-known CHCl3 “hot spot” study areas such as the Klosterhede area (Denmark) should focus directly on gas sampling from confirmed active fault systems. Nests of other ant species should be addressed to compare seasonal, diurnal and nocturnal variations of degassing procedures in relation to earth tides, different geologic settings, and tectonic events such as earthquakes and on quantifying the fluxes to the atmosphere.  相似文献

We analyze an extensive data set of immersion and emersion lightcurves of the occultation of 28 Sgr by Saturn's atmosphere on 3 July 1989. The data give profiles of number density as a function of altitude at a variety of latitudes, at pressures ranging from about 0.5 to about 20 μbar. The atmosphere is essentially isothermal in this range, with a temperature close to 140 K for an assumed mean molecular weight of 2.135. Owing to favorable ring geometry, an accurate radial scale is available for all observations, and we confirm the substantial equatorial bulge produced by zonal winds of ∼450 m/s first observed in the Voyager radio-occultation experiments. The fact that the bulge is still present at microbar pressures suggests that the equatorial winds persist to high altitudes. According to our radial scale, the 2.4-μbar level, which corresponds to half-flux in the stellar occultations, is at an equatorial radius of 60,960 km. This radial scale is in good agreement with the Voyager radio-occultation data at mbar pressures and allows smooth interpolation of the isothermal structure between the stellar-occultation and radio-occultation regions. We do not have such a smooth interpolation between our data and Voyager ultraviolet occultation data, unless we discard the lowest 200 km of Voyager ultraviolet data. When this is done, we obtain a complete atmospheric model from an equatorial radius of 61,500 km down to an equatorial radius of 60,500 km. This model gives excellent agreement between all 28 Sgr, Voyager, and Pioneer 11 data.  相似文献

The granular column collapse is a well-established experiment which consists of having a vertical column of granular material on a flat surface and letting it collapse by gravity. Despite its simplicity in execution, the numerical modelling of a column collapse remains challenging. So far, much attention has been dedicated in assessing the ability of various numerical methods in modelling the large deformation and little to the role of the constitutive model on both the triggering mechanism and the flow behaviour. Furthermore, the influence of the initial density, and its associated dilatancy and strength characteristics, have never been included in the analyses. Most past numerical investigations had relied on simple constitutive relations which do not consider the softening behaviours. The aim of this study is to illustrate the influence of the constitutive model on the on-set of failure, the flow behaviour and the deposition profile using the material point method. Three constitutive models were used to simulate the collapse of two granular columns with different geometries and for two densities. The results of the simulations showed that the constitutive model had a twofold influence on the collapse behaviour. It defined the volume of the mobilised mass which spread along the flat surface and controlled the dissipation of its energy. The initial density was found to enhance the failure angle and flow behaviours and was more significant for small columns than for larger ones. The analysis of the potential energy of the mobilised mass explained the existence of two collapse regimes.  相似文献

The Deep Ecliptic Survey is a project whose goal is to survey a largearea of the near-ecliptic region to a faint limiting magnitude (R ~24) in search of objects in the outer solar system. We are collectinga large homogeneous data sample from the Kitt Peak Mayall 4-m and CerroTololo Blanco 4-m telescopes with the Mosaic prime-focus CCD cameras.Our goal is to collect a sample of 500 objects with good orbits to furtherour understanding of the dynamical structure of the outer solar system.This survey has been in progress since 1998 and is responsible for 272designated discoveries as of March 2003. Following our discovery of 2001 QT297 as the second knownbinary Edgeworth–Kuiper Belt Object (EKBO) in October of 2001 [IAUC 7733], we havecarried out additional high spatial resolution ground based imaging in October andNovember of 2001 and July, August, and September of 2002. Using the Raymond andBeverly Sackler Magellan Instant Camera (MagIC) on the Baade and Clay 6.5 m telescopesat Las Campanas Observatory in Chile, we have obtained accurate astrometric and photometricmeasurements in the Sloan r’ i’ and g’ filters. Superb seeing conditions andPSF fitting allow an accurate determination of the binary component separation and positionangle over time as well as a detailed study of color and temporal variability of the individualcomponents. Here we present a physical characterization of the individual componentsof 2001 QT297 based on these astrometric, color and variability measurements. We findthe primary to exhibit colors about 0.3 magnitudes redder than solar with no evidencefor variability. The secondary component, however, exhibits strong variability(~0.6 magnitudes) with a best fit period of 4.7526 ± 0.0007 h for a single peaklightcurve or 9.505 ± 0.001 h for a dual peaked lightcurve. The colors measured for thesecondary also suggest variability. Based on a preliminary orbit fit for thepair using observations spanning a one year arc, we are able to estimate a system mass of~ 3.2 × 1018 kg and provide constraints to the surface albedo of 9–14% for assumeddensities between 1 and 2 g/cm3.  相似文献

We present photometric and astrometric results from four epochs of ground-based observations at the Magellan telescopes of the Kuiper belt binary 2003QY90. Resolved observations show both components to be highly variable and often of nearly equal brightness, causing difficulty in distinguishing between the primary and secondary components for observations spaced widely in time. Resolved lightcurve observations on one night show one component to have a single-peaked rotation period of 3.4±1.1 h and a peak-to-peak amplitude of 0.34±0.12 mag. The other component exhibits a less constrained lightcurve, with a single-peaked rotation period of 7.1±2.9 h and a peak-to-peak amplitude of 0.90±0.36 mag. Under the assumption of equal albedos, the diameter ratio is 1.25±0.11 in the Sloan i filter. While we cannot determine an orbit from our four distinct epochs of observation (due to ambiguity in component identification), we place limits on the orbital period of the system of 300-600 days, we find a minimum semi-major axis of 13,092 km for a circular orbit and a system mass range of (2.3-18.0)×1017 kg depending on the identification of components in our observations.  相似文献

The 1995 eruption of Fogo (Cape Verde Islands) differed from previous eruptions by the occurrence of evolved lavas, the SW-orientation of vents, and pre-eruptive seismicity between Fogo and the adjacent (~20 km) island of Brava. We have conducted a thermobarometric and chemical study of this eruption in order to reconstruct its magma plumbing system and to test for possible connections to Brava. The bimodal eruption produced basanites (5.2–6.7 wt% MgO) and phonotephrites (2.4–2.8 wt% MgO) that are related by fractional crystallization. Clinopyroxene-melt-barometry of phenocrysts yields pressure ranges of 460–680 MPa for the basanites and 460–520 MPa for the phonotephrites. Microthermometry of CO2-dominated fluid inclusions in olivine and clinopyroxene phenocrysts yields systematically lower pressure ranges of 200–310 MPa for basanites and 270–470 MPa for phonotephrites. The combined data indicate pre-eruptive storage of the 1995 magmas within the lithospheric mantle between 16 and 24 km depth. During eruption, the ascending magmas stalled temporarily at 8–11 km depth, within the lower crust, before they ascended to the surface in a few hours as indicated by zonations of olivine phenocrysts. Our data provide no evidence for magma storage at shallow levels (<200 MPa) or lateral magma movements beneath the Fogo-Brava platform. Sr–Nd–Pb isotope ratios of samples from Brava differ significantly from those of the 1995 and older Fogo lavas, which rules out contamination of the 1995 magmas by Brava material and indicates different mantle sources and magma plumbing systems for both islands.  相似文献
