After giving an account of his personal experiences in the mapping industry, the author considers definitions of the terms photogrammetry, GIS and multimedia. The interaction of photogrammetry and GIS from the viewpoint of commercial suppliers is examined with reference to four companies: Intergraph, Leica, Laser-Scan and ERDAS. The main effects on the end user of a fast developing market are identified as the need to choose from an ever increasing diversity of products and services, and the opportunity to benefit from the changing presentation of height information. Finally the subject of professional institutions is discussed; any proposals for further fragmentation should be resisted.  相似文献

Motorists are vulnerable to extreme weather events, which are likely to be exacerbated by climate change throughout the world. Traffic accidents are conceptualized in this article as the result of a systemic failure that includes human, vehicular, and environmental factors. The snowstorm and concurrent accidents that occurred in the Northeastern United States on 26 January 2011 are used as a case study. Traffic accident data for Fairfax County, Virginia, are supplemented with Doppler radar and additional weather data to characterize the spatiotemporal patterns of the accidents resulting from this major snowstorm event. A kernel density smoothing method is implemented to identify and predict patterns of accident locations within this urban area over time. The predictive capability of this model increases over time with increasing accidents. Models such as these can be used by emergency responders to identify, plan for, and mitigate areas that are more susceptible to increased risk resulting from extreme weather events.  相似文献

We present 10-μm ISO -SWS and Australia Telescope Compact Array observations of the region in the cluster Wd1 in Ara centred on the B[e] star Ara C. An ISO -SWS spectrum reveals emission from highly ionized species in the vicinity of the star, suggesting a secondary source of excitation in the region. We find strong radio emission at both 3.5 and 6.3 cm, with a total spatial extent of over 20 arcsec. The emission is found to be concentrated in two discrete structures, separated by ∼ 14 arcsec. The westerly source is resolved, with a spectral index indicative of thermal emission. The easterly source is clearly extended and non-thermal (synchrotron) in nature. Positionally, the B[e] star is found to coincide with the more compact radio source, while the southerly lobe of the extended source is coincident with Ara A, an M2 I star. Observation of the region at 10 μm reveals strong emission with an almost identical spatial distribution to the radio emission. Ara C is found to have an extreme radio luminosity in comparison with prior radio observations of hot stars such as O and B supergiants and Wolf–Rayet stars, given the estimated distance to the cluster. An origin in a detatched shell of material around the central star is therefore suggested; however given the spatial extent of the emission, such a shell must be relatively young (τ ∼ 103 yr). The extended non-thermal emission associated with the M star Ara A is unexpected; to the best of our knowledge this is a unique phenomenon. SAX (2–10 keV) observations show no evidence of X-ray emission, which might be expected if a compact companion were present.  相似文献

Freshwater lakes existed intermittently in the Salton Trough of southern California during the late Holocene. The lakes formed north of the subaerial Colorado River Delta whenever the Colorado River flowed west into the trough instead of south to the Gulf of California. Water filled the trough to a maximum altitude of 12 m. Stratigraphy, radiocarbon dates, and supplementary evidence document four lacustral intervals of Lake Cahuilla between A.D. 700 and 1580. Archaeological sites are associated with the 12-m shoreline and their occupation correlates with these lacustral intervals.  相似文献

Eleven well-drained soils formed in till parent materials of varying ages in northeastern Pennsylvania were studied to determine changes in the soils with time. Four profiles (three Lackawanna and one Bath) were formed in Woodfordian till (15,000 yr B.P.), and two (Leck Kill) were formed in Altonian till (>28,000, <75,000 yr B.P.). The remaining five (Allenwood) were formed in pre-Wisconsinan till (>75,000 yr B.P.). In these soils, the extractable iron oxide, extractable aluminum oxide, and kaolinite contents increase with age, as do the total clay and fine/total clay ratio. With increasing age, the maximum accumulation of these constituents is found deeper in the profile. The extractable silicon oxide distribution is constant with depth, but it decreases in overall amount with time. Gibbsite is found only in small amounts in the A horizon of Altonian soils, but occurs throughout the profile of pre-Wisconsinan soils, although only in small amounts. In general, differences were found in these soils which separated them into three groups representing varying degrees of soil development. A regression equation was derived to predict the age of soils formed from the Altonian till based on a “clay accumulation index” value for soils of known Woodfordian and Holocene ages. The equation log Y = 1.80 + 0.992(logX) best fit the data, with an r2 value of 0.913. Using this equation, a mean age of 41,000 yr was calculated for the Altonian soils. This date was used to derive a second equation to predict ages for pre-Wisconsinan soils. The equation with the highest r2 value (0.934) was log Y = 1.81 + 0.998(logX). Dates for soils developed in the White Deer till and the Laurelton till of the pre-Wisconsinan stage were calculated to be 86,000 and 91,000 yr B.P., respectively. These dates fall within ages estimated for the Sangamon Interglaciation and thus would appear to be too young for pre-Sangamonian materials. The probable reason for the “too-young age” is that the C-horizon material of the pre-Wisconsinan soils was weathered and did not provide an accurate estimate of clay accumulation for the prediction equation.  相似文献

In this paper I reflect on some key methodological tensions that emerged during my PhD research. The research critically analyses the political struggles of outworking1 women from Chinese, Vietnamese and Cambodian backgrounds in Sydney, Australia, for minimum wages and a monitoring of ethical networks in the clothing industry from 1997 to 2002. Rather than present 'key findings' in this paper I instead reveal how I began to think more critically and in less absolute ways about reading the multiple voices of outworkers, NGO workers and my own voice as researcher, activist and English teacher. I drew insights from Bakhtin's dialogism for thinking about research as shaped by sets of conversations. In this paper I reflect on several 'in-the-field' interactions: organising interviews, interviewing outworkers through an interpreter, storytelling in a rights-based English class setting, and how I and other participants represented outworking women in different forums. Dialogism required I take seriously the concept that knowledges are socially constructed in very particular contexts and this led to a rejection of my earlier notion of a singular authentic voice for outworking women or for me as researcher.  相似文献

Properly combining highly siderophile element (HSE: Re, Pd, Pt, Ru, Ir, Os) abundance data, obtained by isotope dilution, with corresponding 187Os/188Os and 186Os/188Os measurements of rocks requires efficient digestion of finely‐ground powders and complete spike‐sample equilibration. Yet, because of the nature of commonly used methods for separating Os from a rock matrix, hydrofluoric acid (HF) is typically not used in such digestions. Consequently, some silicates are not completely dissolved, and HSE residing within these silicates may not be fully accessed. Consistent with this, some recent studies of basaltic reference materials (RMs) have concluded that an HF‐desilicification procedure is required to fully access the HSE (Ishikawa et al. (2014) Chemical Geology, 384, 27–46; Li et al. (2015) Geostandards and Geoanalytical Research, 39, 17–30). Highly siderophile element abundance and Os isotope studies of intraplate basalts typically target samples with a range of MgO contents (< 8 to > 18% m/m, or as mass fractions, < 8 to > 18 g per 100 g), in contrast to the lower MgO mass fractions (< 10 g per 100 g) of basalt and diabase RMs (i.e., BIR‐1, BHVO‐2, TDB‐1). To investigate the effect of HF‐desilicification on intraplate basalts, experiments were performed on finely ground Azores basalts (8.1–17 g per 100 g MgO) using a ‘standard acid digestion’ (2:1 mixture of concentrated HNO3 and HCl), and a standard acid digestion, followed by HF‐desilicification. No systematic trends in HSE abundances were observed between data obtained by standard acid digestion and HF‐desilicification. Desilicification procedures using HF do not improve liberation of the HSE from Azores basalts, or some RMs (e.g., WPR‐1). We conclude that HF‐desilicification procedures are useful for obtaining total HSE contents of some young lavas, but this type of procedure is not recommended for studies where Re‐Pt‐Os chronological information is desired. The collateral effect of a standard acid digestion to liberate Os, followed by HF‐desilicification to obtain Re and Pt abundances in samples, is that the measured Re/Os and Pt/Os may not correspond with measured 187Os/188Os or 186Os/188Os.  相似文献

Future climate projections and impact analyses are pivotal to evaluate the potential change in crop yield under climate change. Impact assessment of climate change is also essential to prepare and implement adaptation measures for farmers and policymakers. However, there are uncertainties associated with climate change impact assessment when combining crop models and climate models under different emission scenarios. This study quantifies the various sources of uncertainty associated with future climate change effects on wheat productivity at six representative sites covering dry and wet environments in Australia based on 12 soil types and 12 nitrogen application rates using one crop model driven by 28 global climate models (GCMs) under two representative concentration pathways (RCPs) at near future period 2021–2060 and far future period 2061–2100. We used the analysis of variance (ANOVA) to quantify the sources of uncertainty in wheat yield change. Our results indicated that GCM uncertainty largely dominated over RCPs, nitrogen rates, and soils for the projections of wheat yield at drier locations. However, at wetter sites, the largest share of uncertainty was nitrogen, followed by GCMs, soils, and RCPs. In addition, the soil types at two northern sites in the study area had greater effects on yield change uncertainty probably due to the interaction effect of seasonal rainfall and soil water storage capacity. We concluded that the relative contributions of different uncertainty sources are dependent on climatic location. Understanding the share of uncertainty in climate impact assessment is important for model choice and will provide a basis for producing more reliable impact assessment.  相似文献

Recently published activity–composition (ax) relations for minerals in upper amphibolite‐ and granulite facies intermediate and basic rocks have expanded our ability to interpret the petrological evolution of these important components of the lower continental crust. If such petrological modelling is to be reliable, the abundances and compositions of phases calculated at the interpreted conditions of metamorphic equilibration should resemble those in the sample under study. Here, petrological modelling was applied to six granulite facies rocks that formed in different tectonic environments and reached different peak metamorphic pressure–temperature (PT) conditions. While phase assemblages matching those observed in each sample can generally be calculated at PT conditions that approximate those of peak metamorphism, a consistent discrepancy was found between the calculated and observed compositions of amphibole and clinopyroxene. In amphibole, Si, Ca and A‐site K are underestimated by the model, while Al and A‐site Na are overestimated; comparatively, in clinopyroxene, Mg and Si are generally underestimated, while Fe2+ and Al are typically overestimated, compared to observed values. One consequence is a reversal in the Fe–Mg distribution coefficient (KD) between amphibole and clinopyroxene compared to observations. Some of these mismatches are attributed to the incorrect partitioning of elements between the predicted amphibole and clinopyroxene compositions; however, other discrepancies are the result of the incorrect prediction of major substitution vectors in amphibole and clinopyroxene. These compositional irregularities affect mineral modal abundance estimates and in turn the position and size (in PT space) of mineral assemblage fields, the effect becoming progressively more marked as the modal abundance of hornblende increases; hence, this study carries implications for estimating PT conditions of high‐temperature metabasites using these new ax relations.  相似文献
