In September 2014, the state of Baja California Sur (BCS), Mexico, was struck by hurricane Odile. The hurricane caused extensive damage to the infrastructure of the state of BCS, where the energy and water supply were interrupted for several days. The direct economic impact was estimated to be more than 1654 million USD. Considering this damage, few days after the cyclonic event, a technical visit to BCS was carried out. The objective of this study is to present the relevant information on the performance of the infrastructure observed after the event, and to make recommendations in order to mitigate the effects of future cyclonic storms in Mexico, based on the observations during the technical visit. The main causes of damage were the use of materials for non-structural elements with a weak performance under high wind speeds, failures in the design and construction of connections of structural and non-structural elements, accumulated damage, lack of maintenance and impact of wind-born debris, as well as the absence of a building code in the region. Background information about meteorological and climatological aspects of the cyclones that have affected the southern region of BCS, the characteristics of hurricane Odile, the analysis of structural damages and the conclusions, are also presented.  相似文献

Heavy and extra heavy oil reservoirs are subjected to high temperatures during thermal recovery processes like SAGD and CSS. In-situ temperature state changes throughout these operations may generate variations in the mechanical properties or strength parameters of the rock such as Young and Bulk’s modulus, internal friction angle, cohesion and dilation angle. This paper presents results about the variation of the elastic modulus and mechanical properties, in both elastic and plastic region due to changes in temperature and effective confining stress for reconstituted samples of Colombian unconsolidated sands. In order to study these changes, several drained triaxial tests are performed in a range of temperature between 50 and 230 °C and a range of effective confining stress between 0.4 and 8.2 MPa, these tests are carried out on reconstituted samples of oil sands recovered in an outcrop in the Magdalena middle valley of Colombia. The experimental results are analyzed with an analytical model based on the constitutive model of Mohr–Coulomb. The analysis is divided in two ways: First, the elastic region is analyzed calculating the variation of the elastic modulus (Young and bulk’s modulus) and the mechanical parameters (cohesion and internal friction angle) with temperature and effective confining stress, these calculus are done in the linear zone of the stress–strain curve. Then, the plastic region is analyzed using Mohr–Coulomb constitutive model with a non-associative flow rule in order to represent in a better way the dilatant/contractive behavior of the material, from this analysis is possible to obtain the behavior of the mechanical properties during plastic strains. The stress–strain curves obtained from the triaxial compression tests show that for the highest and medium effective confining stress (8.2 and 4.0 MPa), there is a hardening strain behavior after the yielding point that implies a loose sand behavior under confining conditions. Meanwhile, for lowest effective confining stress (0.4 MPa) the samples show a softening strain, a typical behavior for dense sands under confining conditions.  相似文献

This study was designed to establish the distributions of trace metals (Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and inorganic nutrients (PO4 and H4SiO4) in the water column of the small, relatively pristine Peconic River estuary. We were also able to examine the effects of a harmful microalgal bloom, known as the brown tide, which occurred in the area during our study. Because river inflow to the Peconic estuary is restricted by a small dam at the head of the estuary, direct evaluation of the relative importance of riverine inputs on estuarine metal distributions was possible. The simultaneous analyses of geochemical carrier metals (Al, Fe, and Mn), an indicator of sewage (Ag), and other ancillary parameters (e.g., suspended particulate matter, dissolved O2, chlorophylla) were used to describe the major processes controlling metal concentrations in the dissolved phase. The trace metal distributions indicated two distinct biogeochemical regimes within the estuary: an anthropogenically perturbed region with high metal levels (e.g., Ag, 165 pM; Cu, 51 nM; Zn, 57 nM) at the head (Flanders Bay), and a larger outer region with relatively low metal concentrations. The very similar distributions of some metals (e.g., Mn, Ni) in the Peconic estuary compared to those in estuaries having much higher river flow demonstrated the dominant role of internal processes (e.g., diagenetic remobilization) in controlling these metal patterns. An inverse relationship between dissolved Fe and DOC with cell counts of the brown tide microalgaeAureococcus anophagefferens in our field study suggested a close association with the bloom, although a similar relationship was observed between dissolved Al and brown tide cell counts, implying that removal of Fe could be due to particle scavenging rather than biological uptake.  相似文献

Hypersaline habitats in Chile, from marine solar salt pans to saline lagoons and pools in Andean salars, were prospected in search of Artemia populations. These saline ecosystems were characterized through physico-chemical parameters and ionic composition of their brines. Biometrics of cysts and nauplii, as well as morphometrics by using multivariate discriminant analysis for adult specimens evidenced that the Chilean populations of brine shrimp belong to A. franciscana. Cross-breeding results supported the former hypothesis of conspecific Chilean populations, and their differences with A. persimilis, also endemic to the New World, but restricted to Argentinean sites.  相似文献

Spatial analysis of stream power using GIS: SLk anomaly maps   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The stream length‐gradient index (SL) shows the variation in stream power along river reaches. This index is very sensitive to changes in channel slope, thus allowing the evaluation of recent tectonic activity and/or rock resistance. Nevertheless, the comparison of SL values from rivers of different length is biased due to the manner in which the index is formulated, thus making correlations of SL anomalies along different rivers difficult. Therefore, when undertaking a comparison of SL values of rivers of different lengths, a normalization factor must be used. The graded river gradient (K) has already been used in some studies to normalize the SL index. In this work, we explore the relationships between the graded river gradient (K), the SL index and the stream power, proposing the use of a re‐named SLk index, which enables the comparison of variable‐length rivers, as well as the drawing of SLk anomaly maps. We present here a GIS‐based procedure to generate SLk maps and to identify SLk anomalies. In order to verify the advantages of this methodology, we compared an SLk map of the NE border of the Granada basin with both simple river profile–knickpoint identification and with an SL map. The results show that the SLk map supplies good results with defined anomalies and suitably reflects the main tectonic and lithological features of the study area. Among the environmental factors affecting benthic algae and cyanobacteria in streams, the one often producing the largest effects is flow intermittency. This study aimed to characterize the responses of algal assemblages to flow intermittency in a Mediterranean intermittent stream during the drying, non-flow (112 days), and rewetting phases. Algae growing in the epilithic, epipsammic and hyporheic streambed compartments were analyzed for pigment composition, and for the existence of structural changes in cells. Chlorophyll-a concentrations decreased between 60 to 90 % during the non-flow phase, indicating low resistance of algal assemblages to desiccation. In contrast, fast recoveries of Chlorophyll-a when flow resumed indicated high resilience. Pigment composition revealed that the epilithic algal assemblage was considerably different than the epipsammic and hyporheic ones. These differences were mainly attributed to the physical conditions prevailing on each streambed compartment that allowed the growth of different algal assemblages. During the non-flow phase, the synthesis of protective carotenoids (i.e. echinenone and scytonemin) and the occurrence of cell resistance structures (i.e. enlarged membrane thickness and resistant spores) enhanced resistance of the epilithic biofilm. The resistance observed in the epilithic biofilm might also be related to the tightly adhered growth-form of algae on this substratum. Main results suggest that algal assemblages in the epilithic compartment, which were the most exposed to desiccation, were structurally and functionally better adapted to flow interruption than those colonizing other streambed compartments, and that this compartment plays a crucial role in maintaining ecosystem functions under varying flow periods.  相似文献

Generation of replicates of the available data enables the researchers to solve different statistical problems, such as the estimation of standard errors, the inference of parameters or even the approximation of distribution functions. With this aim, Bootstrap approaches are suggested in the current work, specifically designed for their application to spatial data, as they take into account the dependence structure of the underlying random process. The key idea is to construct nonparametric distribution estimators, adapted to the spatial setting, which are distribution functions themselves, associated to discrete or continuous random variables. Then, the Bootstrap samples are obtained by drawing at random from the estimated distribution. Consistency of the suggested approaches will be proved by assuming stationarity from the random process or by relaxing the latter hypothesis to admit a deterministic trend. Numerical studies for simulated data and a real data set, obtained from environmental monitoring, are included to illustrate the application of the proposed Bootstrap methods.  相似文献

The influence of sea level variations due to tides and wave setup on turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) was observed at a point source submarine groundwater discharge in a fringing coral reef lagoon. Tidal and wave setup variations modulated speed, TKE, TKE dissipation, and water temperature and salinity at the buoyant jet. The primary driver of jet TKE and speed variations was tides, while wave setup was a minor contributor. An inverse relationship between surface elevation and TKE was explained with an exponential equation based on sea level variations. During low tides, peak jet speeds (up to 0.3 m s?1) and TKE per unit mass (up to 0.4 m2 s?2) were observed. As high tide approached, the jet produced minimum TKE of ~0.003 m2 s?2 and TKE dissipation ranged from 2 to 8×10?4 m2 s?3. This demonstrated the sensitivity of the jet discharge to tides despite the small tidal range (<20 cm). Jet temperatures and salinities displayed semidiurnal oscillations with minimum salinity and temperature values during maximum discharge. Jet salinities increased throughout low tides while temperatures decreased. This pattern suggested the jet conduit was connected to a stratified cavity within the aquifer containing cool fresh water over cool salty water. As low tides progressed, jet outflow increased in salinity because of the mixing within the conduit, while lower jet temperatures suggested water coming from further or deeper in the aquifer. It is widely recognized that high supplies of fine sediment, largely sand, can negatively impact the aquatic habitat quality of gravel‐bed rivers, but effects of the style of input (chronic vs. pulsed) have not been examined quantitatively. We hypothesize that a continuous (i.e. chronic) supply of sand will be more detrimental to the quality of aquatic habitat than an instantaneous sand pulse equal to the integrated volume of the chronic supply. We investigate this issue by applying a two‐dimensional numerical model to a 1 km long reach of prime salmonid spawning habitat in central Idaho. Results show that in both supply scenarios, sand moves through the study reach as bed load, and that both the movement and depth of sand on the streambed mirrors the hydrograph of this snowmelt‐dominated river. Predictions indicate greater and more persistent mortality of salmonid embryos under chronic supplies than pulse inputs, supporting our hypothesis. However, predicted mortality varies both with salmonid species and location of spawning. We found that the greatest impacts occur closer to the location of the sand input under both supply scenarios. Results also suggest that reach‐scale morphology may modulate the impact of sand loads, and that under conditions of high sand loading climate‐related increases in flow magnitude could increase embryo mortality through sand deposition, rather than streambed scour. Summary  Seven series of monthly pluviometric amounts, sometimes exceeding recording periods of 100 years and compiled by the Instituto Nacional de Meteorología (Spain), are used to study the irregularity of the pluviometric regime along the Spanish Mediterranean coast and nearby Atlantic coast. First of all, three statistical functions (gamma, log-normal and a combination of Poisson and gamma distributions) and moment-ratio diagrams are used to model the monthly and annual empirical distributions of precipitation amounts, each distribution being tested by means of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. It is noteworthy that, whereas most of the monthly cases require the gamma distribution, the pluviometric behaviour of the summer months is well described by the Poisson-gamma distribution. Moreover, both the log-normal and the gamma distributions satisfactorily model empirical annual amounts. Consequently, rainfall amounts are not identically distributed along a year for each gauge tested. Second, temporal trends deduced for annual and seasonal amounts are computed and their statistical significance evaluated. The most notable fact is that, although some linear trends are close to 1 mm/year, their significance levels exceed the assumed threshold value and, excepting the winter season for Barcelona, they are considered non-significant from a statistical point of view. Finally, by again using monthly and annual amounts, three temporal irregularity indexes are computed for each pluviometric series, the temporal disparity of the rainfall patterns of the Mediterranean region being enhanced as a result. It addition to the temporal irregularity, a change with latitude is observed both in the parameters of the statistical distributions and the temporal irregularity indexes for the rain gauges analysed. The two most southerly rain gauges constitute a special case in comparison with the remaining stations, because they also receive the Atlantic influences due to their proximity to this ocean.
