Abstract— This study presents the first determinations of 39Ar‐40Ar ages of R chondrites for the purpose of understanding the thermal history of the R chondrite parent body. The 39Ar‐40Ar ages were determined on whole‐rock samples of four R chondrites: Carlisle Lakes, Rumuruti, Acfer 217, and Pecora Escarpment #91002 (PCA 91002). All samples are breccias except for Carlisle Lakes. The age spectra are complicated by recoil and diffusive loss to various extents. The peak 39Ar‐40Ar ages of the four chondrites are 4.35, ?4.47 ± 0.02, 4.30 ± 0.07 Ga, and 4.37 Ga, respectively. These ages are similar to Ar‐Ar ages of relatively unshocked ordinary chondrites (4.52–4.38 Ga) and are older than Ar‐Ar ages of most shocked ordinary chondrites («4.2 Ga). Because the meteorites with the oldest (Rumuruti, ?4.47 Ga) and the youngest (Acfer 217, ?4.30 Ga) ages are both breccias, these ages probably do not record slow cooling within an undisrupted asteroidal parent body. Instead, the process of breccia formation may have differentially reset the ages of the constituent material, or the differences in their age spectra may arise from mixtures of material that had different ages. Two end‐member type situations may be envisioned to explain the age range observed in the R chondrites. The first is if the impact(s) that reset the ages of Acfer 217 and Rumuruti was very early. In this case, the ?170 Ma maximum age difference between these meteorites may have been produced by much deeper burial of Acfer 217 than Rumuruti within an impact‐induced thick regolith layer, or within a rubble pile type parent body following parent body re‐assembly. The second, preferred scenario is if the impact that reset the age of Acfer 217 was much later than that which reset Rumuruti, then Acfer 217 may have cooled more rapidly within a much thinner regolith layer. In either scenario, the oldest age obtained here, from Rumuruti, provides evidence for relatively early (?4.47 Ga) impact events and breccia formation on the R chondrite parent body.  相似文献

Geoconservation in England, as in Great Britain more widely, is very well established. Sites of national or international scientific importance, as determined by a systematic site assessment and selection exercise, can be protected by designation as Sites of Special Scientific Interest. Sites of local importance e.g. Local Geological Sites may also be taken into account when planning decisions are made that could have an impact on them. As a whole, the network of conserved geosites represents the key elements of our current understanding of the geology and geomorphology of England. Site selection and safeguard and management of this network are dependent on geoscience information, and in return continued geoscience fieldwork is dependent on having conserved sites available for study. Here, we review the relationship between geoconservation and geoscience, and how it has developed since the first geoconservation legislation nearly 70 years ago. We discuss the achievements, challenges and where and how this relationship needs to strengthen further to meet future needs of both geoscience and nature conservation. In a changing world, there will continue to be a need for innovative geoscience supported by effective geoconservation. Those interested in conserving England’s geological heritage will need to engage the wider geoscience community more than ever to deliver a shared vision for the natural environment.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to identify spatial variability in exposure to outdoor traffic-related air pollution with specific emphasis on comparing exposure estimates for working females and males across a metropolitan area. A spatial exposure simulation model was used to estimate annual average exposure to traffic-related nitrogen dioxide for males and females reporting regular work in census tracts other than that of their residence, in Vancouver, British Columbia. The model produced estimates of annual average exposure in six microenvironments (home indoor, work indoor, other indoor, outdoor, in-vehicle to work, and in-vehicle other) using time-activity patterns and work flow data, for males and females in each of 382 census tracts. This allowed for the identification of spatial variations in exposure estimates for each gender, due to mobility within the study region. Indoor sources of nitrogen dioxide were not included in the simulation. No significant differences in estimated total exposure were found between working females and males in general. Small but observable spatial differences, however, were found between working females and males at the 90th percentile of the exposure distributions associated specifically with the work indoor microenvironment. These were highest in suburban areas (+3 μ g/m3 for females, relative to total exposures in the range of 26 to 37 μ g/m3 annual average hourly nitrogen dioxide). These results identify specific geographic locations in the study area where personal monitoring studies might be warranted and suggest that the inclusion of workplace locations in multivariate modeling could be useful to further understand differences in estimated exposures.  相似文献

The Miocene Tejeda caldera on Gran Canaria erupted ~ 20 rhyolite–trachyte ignimbrites (Mogán Group 14–13.3 Ma), followed by ~ 20 phonolitic lava flows and ignimbrites (Fataga Group 13–8.5 Ma). Upper-Mogán tuffs have been severely altered immediately within the caldera margin, whereas extra-caldera Mogán ignimbrites, and overlying Fataga units, are apparently unaltered. The altered intra-caldera samples contain minerals characteristic of secondary fluid–rock interaction (clays, zeolites, adularia), and relics of the primary mineral assemblage identified in unaltered ignimbrites (K-feldspar, plagioclase, pyroxene, amphibole, and groundmass quartz). Major and trace-element data indicate that Si, Na, K, Pb, Sr, and Rb, were strongly mobilized during fluid–rock interaction, whereas Ti, Zr, and Nb behaved in a more refractory manner, experiencing only minor mobilization. The δ18O values of the altered intra-caldera tuffs are significantly higher than in unaltered extra-caldera ignimbrites, consistent with an overall low-temperature alteration environment. Unaltered extra-caldera ignimbrites have δD values between − 110‰ and − 173‰, which may reflect Rayleigh-type magma degassing and/or post-depositional vapour release. The δD values of the altered intra-caldera tuffs range from − 52‰ to − 131‰, with ambient meteoric water at the alteration site estimated at ca. − 15‰. Interaction and equilibration of the intra-caldera tuffs with ambient meteoric water at low temperature can only account for whole-rock δD values of around − 45‰, given that ?Dclay–water is ca. − 30‰ at 100 °C, and decreases in magnitude at higher temperatures. All altered tuff samples have δD values that are substantially lower than − 45‰, indicating interaction with a meteoric water source with a δD value more negative than − 15‰, which may have been produced in low-temperature steam fumaroles. Supported by numerical modeling, our Gran Canaria data reflect the near-surface, epithermal part of a larger, fault-controlled hydrothermal system associated with the emplacement of the high-level Fataga magma chamber system. In this near-surface environment, fluid temperatures probably did not exceed 200–250 °C.  相似文献

A simple conceptual hydrological model that explicitly includes the lateral movement of soil water and operates efficiently at the landscape scale is outlined. It is applied to five areas of ecological interest in the UK to provide distributed mean monthly soil moisture on a 50 m grid. As the model's driving variables—daily rainfall and potential evapotranspiration—are assumed constant over each of the tracts of land, the variability in soil moisture is due to different soil types and to topographic effects. Box plots of the mean monthly simulated soil moisture clearly show the spread of values occasioned by modelling the lateral water movement down the hillslope. The general magnitude of the results are compared with published data wherever possible and there is some discussion of the form of the curve used in the model to describe the attenuation of evapotranspiration with decreasing soil moisture. Asteroid 1984 AB, discovered in January 1984, proved to be a unique object with a close dynamical relationship to Mars. A brief history of the discovery and subsequent “evolution” of the orbit as it was refined is presented. The preliminary orbit of 1984 AB indicated that it might be a Mars Trojan, and an extended discussion of this interesting possibility is presented, but this hypothesis had to be dismissed after further observations had refined the orbit. The semimajor axis and orbital eccentricity are very similar to that of Mars. No other known Mars-crossing asteroid exists with an orbit as closely associated to Mars.  相似文献

Abstract– Compared with ordinary chondrites, there is a relative paucity of chronological and other data to define the early thermal histories of enstatite parent bodies. In this study, we report 39Ar‐40Ar dating results for five EL chondrites: Khairpur, Pillistfer, Hvittis, Blithfield, and Forrest; five EH chondrites: Parsa, Saint Marks, Indarch, Bethune, and Reckling Peak 80259; three igneous‐textured enstatite meteorites that represent impact melts on enstatite chondrite parent bodies: Zaklodzie, Queen Alexandra Range 97348, and Queen Alexandra Range 97289; and three aubrites, Norton County, Bishopville, and Cumberland Falls Several Ar‐Ar age spectra show unusual 39Ar recoil effects, possibly the result of some of the K residing in unusual sulfide minerals, such as djerfisherite and rodderite, and other age spectra show 40Ar diffusion loss. Few additional Ar‐Ar ages for enstatite meteorites are available in the literature. When all available Ar‐Ar data on enstatite meteorites are considered, preferred ages of nine chondrites and one aubrite show a range of 4.50–4.54 Ga, whereas five other meteorites show only lower age limits over 4.35–4.46 Ga. Ar‐Ar ages of several enstatite chondrites are as old or older as the oldest Ar‐Ar ages of ordinary chondrites, which suggests that enstatite chondrites may have derived from somewhat smaller parent bodies, or were metamorphosed to lower temperatures compared to other chondrite types. Many enstatite meteorites are brecciated and/or shocked, and some of the younger Ar‐Ar ages may record these impact events. Although impact heating of ordinary chondrites within the last 1 Ga is relatively common for ordinary chondrites, only Bethune gives any significant evidence for such a young event.  相似文献

Fluid inclusion studies combined with the isotope geochemistry of several generations of fracture calcite from the Olkiluoto research site, Finland, has been used to better understand the past thermal and fluid history in the crystalline rock environment. Typically, fracture mineral investigations use O and C isotopes from calcite and an estimate of the isotopic composition of the water that precipitated the calcite to perform δ18O geothermometry calculations to estimate past temperature conditions. By combining fluid inclusion information with calcite isotopes, one can directly measure the temperature at which the calcite formed and can better determine past fluid compositions. Isotopic, petrologic and fluid inclusion studies at the Olkiluoto research site in Finland were undertaken as part of an investigation within the Finnish nuclear waste disposal program. The study revealed that four fluids were recorded by fracture calcites. From petrologic evidence, the first fluid precipitated crystalline calcite at 151–225°C with a δ13C signature of −21 to −13.9‰ PDB and a δ18O signature of 12.3–13.0‰ SMOW. These closed fracture fillings were found at depths greater than 500 m and were formed from a high temperature, low salinity, Na–Cl fluid of possible meteoric water altered by exchange with wallrock or dilute basinal origin. The next fluid precipitated crystalline calcite with clay at 92–210°C with a δ13C signature of −2.6 to +3.8‰ PDB and a δ18O signature of 19.4–20.7‰ SMOW. These closed fracture fillings were found at depths less than 500 m and were formed from a moderate to high temperature, low to moderate salinity, Na–Cl fluid, likely of magmatic origin. The last group of calcites to form, record the presence of two distinct fluid types. The platy (a) calcite formed at 95–238°C with a δ13C signature of −12.2 to −3.8‰ PDB and a δ18O signature of 14.9–19.6‰ SMOW, from a high temperature, low salinity, Na–Cl fluid of possible magmatic origin. The platy (b) calcite formed at 67–98°C with a δ13C signature of −13.0 to −6.2‰ PDB and a δ18O signature of 15.1–20.1‰ SMOW, from a low temperature, high salinity, Ca–Na–Cl fluid of possible basinal brine origin. The two calcites are related through a mixing between the two end members. The source of the fluids for the platy grey (a) calcites could be the olivine diabase dykes and sills that cut through the site. The source of fluids for the platy (b) calcites could be the Jotnian arkosic sandstone formations in the northern part of the site. At the Olkiluoto site, δ18O geothermometry does not agree with fluid inclusion data. The original source of the water that forms the calcite has the largest effect on the isotopic signature of the calcites formed. Large isotopic shifts are seen in any water by mineral precipitation during cooling under rock–water equilibrium fractionation conditions. Different calcite isotopic signatures are produced depending on whether cooling occurred in an open or closed system. Water–rock interaction, at varying W/R ratios, between a water and a host rock can explain the isotopic shifts in many of the calcites observed. In some cases it is possible to shift the δ18O of the water by +11.5‰ (SMOW) using a realistic water–rock ratio. This process still does not explain some of the very positive δ18O values calculated using fluid inclusion data. Several other processes, such as low temperature recrystallization, boiling, kinetic effects and dissolution of calcite from fluid inclusion walls can affect isotopic signatures to varying degrees. The discrepancy between fluid inclusion data and δ18O geothermometry at the Olkiluoto site was most likely due to poor constraint on the original source of the water.  相似文献
