The recent theoretical studies on the formation and evolution of the atmosphere and oceans of the Earth are reviewed. Impact degassing during accretion of the Earth would probably generate an impact-induced steam atmosphere on the proto-Earth. At the end of accretion, the steam atmosphere became unstable and condensed to form the proto-ocean with almost the present mass of ocean. The steam atmosphere would have thus evolved to the proto-CO2 atmosphere during the earliest history of the Earth because CO in the proto-atmosphere may be photochemically converted to CO2. However, CO2 in the proto-atmosphere has decreased with time through the global carbon cycle which may have stabilized the terrestrial environment against an increase in the solar luminosity. The continental growth during Hadean and Archean would therefore have a significant influence on the carbon cycle and the surface temperature. It is also suggested that the continental growth is a necessary condition for the terrestrial environment to evolve to the present state. Both the impact degassing and the subsequent continuous degassing are suggested to have played a major role in the formation and evolution of the atmosphere and ocean. In particular, most of N2 may have been produced by the impact degassing during accretion, and the contribution of the subsequent continuous degassing is at most 10% for N2. As a consequence, after the CO2 level decreased to less than 1 bar, the atmosphere may have been at about 1 bar and composed mainly of N2 for most of the subsequent history of the Earth.  相似文献

Partial melting experiments on plagioclase feldspar have been carried out to investigate textures and kinetics of the melting. A labradorite single crystal was heated at one atmosphere pressure and temperatures within its melting interval as a function of time. So called honeycomb, fingerprint, or sieve textures were produced except for the runs just below the liquidus. The melting was initiated by heterogeneous nucleation of melt at the surface and/or interior (cracks and possively dislocations) of the crystal. The pattern of the melt is dendritic with a few μm arm spacing. After the melt develops throughout the crystal, the volumes of melt and residual crystal become larger and smaller, respectively, without changing the arm spacings. The melt is homogeneous and has the approximate temperature dependent liquidus composition irrespective of the time. There are compositional gradients in the residual crystal after short periods of melting. The An content of the crystals increases with increasing time until it finally reaches equilibrium with the melt after several thousands minutes of heating. It is concluded that the enlargement of the melt, the main process of the melting, is controlled by diffusion in the crystal. The fact that partial melts have the composition of the equilibrium liquidus even from the first several minutes strongly suggests that the local equilibrium at the crystal-liquid interface is satisfied during the melting. Some of the honeycomb, fingerprint, and sieve textures found in xenoliths and phenocrysts of sodic plagioclase in volcanic rocks would be caused by heating events (such as magma mixing) during which temperatures of magmas were temporarily higher than the solidus of some of the minerals.  相似文献

The thermal history of four spinel lherzolites (Lhz-13. Lhz-28, Lhz-29 and Lhz-53) from tuff breccia of the Ichinomegata crater, northeast Japan, has been studied in detail. Lhz-13 and Lhz-53 showed nearly perfect chemical homogeneity of the constituent minerals, and increase of Ca near the rim of olivine is the only disequilibrium evidence observed. In addition to the Ca zoning in olivine, Lhz-28 and Lhz-29 revealed compositional zoning in the Mg/Mg + Fe ratio and Ca content in ortho- and clinopyroxenes. Lhz-13 and Lhz-53 equilibrated at about 800°C in the upper mantle, based on Fe/Mg partitioning between olivine/spinel and olivine/clinopyroxene, and on the mutual solubility of Ca between olivine and pyroxenes. Lhz-28 and Lhz-29 also equilibrated originally at about 800°C, but were preheated at about 1000°C prior to their entrapment by the ascending host magma. The Fe/Mg partitioning between olivine /spinel and olivine/clinopyroxene reequilibrated during the preheating event: however, the Ca solubility did not reequilibrate. Olivine alone has rehomogenized with a high-Ca content but pyroxenes were compositionally zoned with Ca. The preheating event, indicated by the high-Ca content in the core of olivine, is recognized from about a half of the Ichinomegata Iherzolites (50 xenoliths were studied). The duration of heating during the transport of the xenolith by the magma (estimated from the width of the Ca zoning in the rim of olivine) ranges between several hours to a year depending on the rock specimen. From the requirement to reset olivine core compositions, the duration of the preheating event was estimated as greater than 1000 yr.  相似文献

Magnetic anomalies measured in the central to western half of the Solomon Sea, when considered with other magnetic data, reveal the existence of linear patterns. Magnetic lineation anomaly models of the Cenozoic, 65 to 0 Ma, suggest that an age between 34 and 28 Ma and a half-rate spreading speed of 5.8 cm/yr for the northern flank of a former spreading center best fits our present magnetic data in the Solomon Sea Basin. Heat flow and bathymetry data support this preferred model.  相似文献

Trace element concentrations of peridotitic garnet inclusions in diamonds from two Chinese kimberlite pipes were determined using the ion microprobe. Garnet xenocrysts from the same two kimberlite pipes were also analyzed for comparison. In contrast to their extremely refractory major element compositions, all harzburgitic garnets showed enrichment in light rare earth elements (REE) relative to chondrite, resulting in sinuous REE patterns. Both normal and sinuous REE patterns were observed from the lherzolitic garnets. Concentrations of REE in garnets changed significantly from diamond to diamond and no specific correlations were observed with their major element compositions. Analyses of randomly selected two to three points within every grain of a large number of garnet inclusions by the ion microprobe demonstrated that there was no evident compositional heterogeneity, and multiple grains of one phase from a single diamond host also exhibit very similar compositions. This implies that the trace element heterogeneity within one grain or among multiple inclusions from the same diamond host, as reported from Siberian diamonds, is not a common feature for these Chinese diamonds. Concentrations of Na, Ti, and Zr tend to decrease when garnets become more refractory, but variations of Sr and Li are more complex. Compositions rich in light REE and relatively poor in high field strength elements (HFSE) of the harzburgitic garnet inclusions in diamonds are generally consistent with metasomatism by carbonatite melts. The trace element features observed from the garnet inclusions in Chinese diamonds may be caused by carbonatite melt infiltration and partial melt extraction. Spatial and temporal gradients in melt/rock ratio and temperature are the main reasons for the large variations of REE patterns and other trace element concentrations. We have examined the quality of the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED) seismic moment tensor (MT) catalogue obtained using a regional broadband seismic network (FREESIA). First, we examined using synthetic waveforms the robustness of the solutions with regard to data noise as well as to errors in the velocity structure and focal location. Then, to estimate the reliability, robustness and validity of the catalogue, we compared it with the Harvard centroid moment tensor (CMT) catalogue as well as the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) focal mechanism catalogue. We found out that the NIED catalogue is consistent with Harvard and JMA catalogues within the uncertainty of 0.1 in moment magnitude, 10 km in depth, and 15° in direction of the stress axes. The NIED MT catalogue succeeded in reducing to 3.5 the lower limit of moment magnitude above which the moment tensor could be reliably estimated. Finally, we estimated the stress tensors in several different regions by using the NIED MT catalogue. This enables us to elucidate the stress/deformation field in and around the Japanese islands to understand the mode of deformation and applied stress. Moreover, we identified a region of abnormal stress in a swarm area from stress tensor estimates.  相似文献

Several heat flow measurements were made during the NAT83 cruise in the central part of the Solomon Sea Basin. The average value of 87 mW/m2 (2.08 HFU) calculated from these and other data indicates that the age of the Solomon Sea Basin may range from 24 to 44 Ma. This is supported by the water depth, of approximately 4,500 m, versus age relationship. There is a possibility that the Solomon Sea Basin is not a back-arc basin associated with an arc but was formerly a relatively large oceanic plate. The agreement in age from both heat flow and water depth data favors the latter hypothesis.  相似文献

We estimated the stress fields of the aftershocks of the 2000 western Tottori earthquake (Mw 6.6) and the northern Hyogo swarm (max Mw 5.2) by a stress tensor inversion of moment tensor solutions reported from the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (Japan). The maximum principal stress direction of the western Tottori sequence was estimated as N107°E with a strike–slip regime. In the northern Hyogo swarm, the orientations of the principal stress directions could not be well constrained by the observed data, but after examining the detailed characteristics of the solution, we obtained a most probable solution of N113°E for the σ1 direction. These solutions are consistent with the maximum horizontal directions roughly estimated from the strike directions of large earthquakes occurring geographically between these two seismic activities. We measured the angle between each fault–slip direction and maximum principal stress direction to investigate the frictional properties of earthquakes. The distribution of the angles was forward modeled to estimate the coefficient of friction and the stress ratio, assuming uniformly distributed fault orientations. For the western Tottori sequence, a homogeneous stress field with a coefficient of friction less than 0.4 was estimated. A high stress level was also suggested because very little change occurred in the stress field during the mainshock. For the northern Hyogo sequence, the coefficient of friction was estimated to be between 0.5 and 1.0.  相似文献

Core samples from the Chicxulub impact structure provide insights into the formation processes of a shallow-marine-target, complex crater. Although previous studies investigated the impactites (generally suevitic and polymict breccias) of the Yaxcopoil-1 (YAX-1) drill core in the Chicxulub impact structure, the interpretation of its deposition remains controversial. Here, we analyze planar deformation features (PDFs), grain size, and abundance of shocked quartz throughout the YAX-1 impactite sequence (794–895 m in depth). PDF orientations of most quartz grains in YAX-1 impactites show a distribution of both low angles ({104}, {103}, {102}) and high angles (orientations higher than 55° to c-axis), while the lower part of the impactite sequence contains quartz showing only PDF orientations of low angles. High-abundance, coarse-grained shocked quartz is found from the lower to middle parts of the impactites, whereas it abruptly changes to low-abundance, fine-grained shocked quartz within the upper part. In the uppermost part of the impactites, repeated oscillations in contents of these two components are observed. PDF orientation pattern suggests most of the shocked quartz grains experienced a range of shock pressure, except two samples in the lower part of impactites, which experienced only a high level of shock. We suggest that the base and lower part of the impactite sequence were formed by ejecta curtain and melt surge deposits, respectively. Our results are also consistent with the interpretation that the middle part of the impactite sequence is fallback ejecta from the impact plume. Additionally, we support the contention that massive seawater resurges into the crater occurred during the deposition of the upper and uppermost part of the impactites.  相似文献
