This paper describes the results of 10 years of water quality monitoring in the Indian River Lagoon Florida, with special
emphasis on the relationships between trends in climatic conditions and the distribution, composition, and abundance of the
phytoplankton community. The Indian River Lagoon, which spans 220 km of Florida’s east coast, is a region of particular concern
because of the rapid rate of human development throughout the region and the hydrologically restricted character of the lagoon,
which heightens the potential for algal bloom. Water sampling was carried out on a monthly to twice-monthly basis at six sites
located in the northern and central lagoon. The 10-year study included both extended periods of below and above average rainfall.
A number of ecologically distinct regions exist within the lagoon, which differ considerably in water exchange properties
and watershed inputs. The northern lagoon is characterized by longer water residence times, lower phosphorus concentrations,
higher nitrogen concentrations, and more stable salinity conditions than the central lagoon. Mean phytoplankton biovolumes
were substantially higher at the sites in the northern lagoon than at the sites in the central lagoon, and algal blooms were
more common and intense in the former region. Inter-annual patterns of phytoplankton biovolume were also different in the
northern and central lagoon. In the northern lagoon, phytoplankton biovolumes were lowest during the drought period, from
the autumn of 1998 to the spring of 2001. By contrast, algal bloom events in the central lagoon were not only less frequent
but were not tied to periods of high rainfall. The most widespread and common bloom formers were the potentially toxic dinoflagellate
Pyrodinium bahamense var. bahamense and two centric diatoms, Dactyliosolen fragilissimus and Cerataulina pelagica. Many of the biovolume peaks observed over the study period were attributable to these three species. The results of time
series modeling of phytoplankton dynamics further highlighted the disparities between the two regions of the lagoon in terms
of the suite of parameters that best predict the observed trends in the biomass of phytoplankton. Overall, the outcome of
this initial modeling effort in the Indian River Lagoon suggests that time series approaches can help define the factors that

Increasing recognition of the value of practice-based or experiential knowledge in natural resource management justifies the creation of a new category of articles in Society & Natural Resources that we are calling Practice-Based Knowledge (PBK). The rationale for focusing on PBK is due to its key role in the emergence of hybrid governance institutions across state, market, and civil society, understanding the complexity of dynamic socioecological systems, recognizing the challenges of multiple knowledge systems and context-specific practices, embracing the power of informal institutions and civic science, and engaging debates on the growing prevalence of market-oriented conservation. The goal is to provide a dedicated space within the published, peer-reviewed literature for scholars, government officials, nonprofit managers, and engaged citizens to share experiences informed by practical action. Grubby (Myoxocephalus aenaeus, Cottidae) is a common benthic fish of inshore waters and estuaries of eastern Long Island Sound; however, little information exists on their life history or population demographics. This study utilised a long-term data series (1976–2002) to assess grubby life history and population demographics and explores trends in the Niantic River and Niantic Bay populations. In addition, we examined the age, size, and fecundity of adult grubby in 2001–02 to determine the population characteristics in the region. Mean grubby catch per unit effort (CPUE) in Niantic Bay ranged from 0.4 per trawl in 1976 to 2.9 per trawl in 1984 while river CPUE ranged from 0.4 per trawl in 1977 to 7.6 per trawl in 1989. Catch of grubby in bottom trawls varied seasonally with highest CPUE occurring in winter. Highest entrainment of grubby larvae occurred in 2001 while the lowest entrainment observed was in 1991. Four age classes, 0+ through III+, were derived from otolith analysis (N = 51) although length frequency analysis suggested the possibility of older fish in the population. The total number of eggs in ovaries ranged from 286 to 16 451 for grubby (N = 64) between 52 mm and 155 mm TL. Results of this study indicated a decline in abundance of adult grubby over the 26-year period, possibly related to concurrent declines in eelgrass (Zostera marina) abundance and/or increased water temperature. 相似文献

Noble gases in three meteoritic samples were examined by stepwise heating, in an attempt to relate peaks in the outgassing curves to specific minerals: NeKrXe in Allende (C3V) and an Allende residue insoluble in HF-HCl, and Xe in Abee (E4). In Allende, chromite and carbon contain most of the trapped Ne (20Ne/22Ne ≈ 8.7) and anomalous Xe enriched in light and heavy isotopes, and release it at ~850°C (bulk meteorite) or 1000°C (residue). Mineral Q, containing most of the trapped Ar, Kr, Xe as well as some Ne (20Ne/22Ne ≈ 10.4), releases its gases mainly between 1200 and 1600°C, well above the release temperatures of organic polymers (300–500°) or amorphous carbon (800–1000°). The high noble-gas release temperature, ready solubility in oxidizing acids, and correlation with acid-soluble Fe and Cr all point to an inorganic rather than carbonaceous nature of Q.All the radiogenic 129Xe is contained in HCl, HF-soluble minerals, and is distributed as follows over the peaks in the release curve: Attend 1000° (75%), 1300° (25%); Abee (data of Hohenberg and Reynolds, 1969) ~850° (15%), 1100° (60%), 1300° (25%). No conclusive identifications of host phases can yet be given; possible candidates are troilite and silicates for Allende, and djerfisherite, troilite and silicates for Abee.Mineral Q strongly absorbs air xenon, and releases some of it only at 800–1000°C. Dilution by air Xe from Q and other minerals may explain why temperature fractions from bulk meteorites often contain less 124–130Xe for a given enrichment in heavy isotopes than does xenon from etched chromitecarbon samples, although chromite-carbon is the source of the anomalous xenon in either case. Flow distortion is a universal consideration in the measurement of wind. Usually the distortion results from deflection of the flow by the support. Instruments mounted on airplanes, however, experience an additional deflection associated with lift, which changes rapidly and continuously during flight. In front of the airplane, this deflection appears as upwash. Characteristic upwash contamination ranges from 0.5 to 2.5 m s-1, depending on wing loading, flight speed, and forward distance from the wing to the measurement location. On pressure-radome installations the distance from the wing is usually small and the potential for upwash contamination large. Sensors mounted at the end of long probes attached to smaller airplanes with light wing loading are less susceptible to upwash contamination. Since wing loading also depends on the local vertical wind velocity the upwash velocity is directly correlated with vertical wind velocity. Generally, empirical corrections are derived from flight tests. We develop a simple method from principles of aerodynamics which explains these corrections in terms of upwash. The applicability of our approach to moderate upwash is demonstrated with data collected from the NOAA Long-EZ research airplane. Palaeo-ice sheets are important analogues for understanding contemporary ice sheets, offering a record of ice sheet behaviour that spans millennia. There are two main approaches to reconstructing palaeo-ice sheets. Empirical reconstructions use the available glacial geological and chronological evidence to estimate ice sheet extent and dynamics but lack direct consideration of ice physics. In contrast, numerically modelled simulations implement ice physics, but often lack direct quantitative comparison with empirical evidence. Despite being long identified as a fruitful scientific endeavour, few ice sheet reconstructions attempt to reconcile the empirical and model-based approaches. To achieve this goal, model-data comparison procedures are required. Here, we compare three numerically modelled simulations of the former British–Irish Ice Sheet with the following lines of evidence: (a) position and shape of former margin positions, recorded by moraines; (b) former ice-flow direction and flow-switching, recorded by flowsets of subglacial bedforms; and (c) the timing of ice-free conditions, recorded by geochronological data. These model–data comparisons provide a useful framework for quantifying the degree of fit between numerical model simulations and empirical constraints. Such tools are vital for reconciling numerical modelling and empirical evidence, the combination of which will lead to more robust palaeo-ice sheet reconstructions with greater explicative and ultimately predictive power. 相似文献

The production and distribution of biological material in wind-driven coastal upwelling systems are of global importance, yet they remain poorly understood. Production is frequently presumed to be proportional to upwelling rate, yet high winds can lead to advective losses from continental shelves, where many species at higher trophic levels reside. An idealized mixed-layer conveyor (MLC) model of biological production from constant upwelling winds demonstrated previously that the amount of new production available to shelf species increased with upwelling at low winds, but declined at high winds [Botsford, L.W., Lawrence, C.A., Dever, E.P., Hastings, A., Largier, J., 2003. Wind strength and biological productivity in upwelling systems: an idealized study. Fisheries Oceanography 12, 245–259]. Here we analyze the response of this model to time-varying winds for parameter values and observed winds from the Wind Events and Shelf Transport (WEST) study region. We compare this response to the conventional view that the results of upwelling are proportional to upwelled volume. Most new production per volume upwelled available to shelf species occurs following rapid increases in shelf transit time due to decreases in wind (i.e. relaxations). However, on synoptic, event time-scales shelf production is positively correlated with upwelling rate. This is primarily due to the effect of synchronous periods of low values in these time series, paradoxically due to wind relaxations. On inter-annual time-scales, computing model production from wind forcing from 20 previous years shows that these synchronous periods of low values have little effect on correlations between upwelling and production. Comparison of model production from 20 years of wind data over a range of shelf widths shows that upwelling rate will predict biological production well only in locations where cross-shelf transit times are greater than the time required for phytoplankton or zooplankton production. For stronger mean winds (narrower shelves), annual production falls below the peak of constant wind prediction [Botsford et al., 2003. We present the first testate amoeba‐based palaeohydrological reconstruction from the Swiss Alps, and the first depth to the water table (DWT) calibration dataset for this region. Compared to existing models, our new calibration dataset performs well (RMSEP = 4.88), despite the length of the water table gradient covered (53 cm). The present‐day topography and vegetation of the study mire Mauntschas suggest that it is partly ombrotrophic (large Sphagnum fuscum hummocks, one of which was the coring site) but mostly under the minerotrophic influence of springs in the mire and runoff from the surrounding area. Ombrotrophic Sphagnum fuscum hummocks developed at the sampling site only during the last 50 years, when testate amoebae indicate a shift towards dry and/or acid conditions. Prior to AD 1950 the water table was much higher, suggesting that the influence of the mineral‐rich water prevented the development of ombrotrophic hummocks. The reconstructed DWT correlated with Pinus cembra pollen accumulation rates, suggesting that testate amoebae living on the mire and P. cembra growing outside of it partly respond to the same factor(s). Finally, temperature trends from the nearby meteorological station paralleled trends in reconstructed DWT. However, contrary to other studies made on raised bogs of northwestern Europe, the highest correlation was observed for winter temperature, despite the fact that testate amoebae would more logically respond to moisture conditions during the growing season. The observed correlation with winter temperature might reflect a control of winter severity on surface moisture during at least the first part of the growing season, through snow melt and soil frost phenomena influencing run‐off. More ecohydrological work on sub‐alpine mires is needed to understand the relationships between climate, testate amoebae and peatland development. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献
