In situ impedance spectroscopy in laboratory experiments at high pressure and temperature can provide crucial quantitative
information on properties of rock materials at depth as well as on physical and chemical processes occurring in the deep Earth.
We developed an experimental setup for in situ electrical impedance measurements in a piston-cylinder apparatus and applied
it to study the kinetics of charge carriers and phase transformations in pyrophyllite and CaCO3 aggregates. From comparison with previous studies, we found that absolute values of electrical conductivity and pressure–temperature
conditions for dehydration reactions in pyrophyllite and phase transformations in CaCO3 can be accurately determined using our setup. Dehydration of pyrophyllite significantly enhances the transport kinetics and
the effect is more pronounced under undrained conditions than under drained conditions. When dehydroxylation and decomposition
temperatures for pyrophyllite under undrained and drained conditions are combined, they appear independent of pressure rather
than increasing with pressure as previously suggested. Electrical conductivity of CaCO3 varies with impurity content and grain size, and is most likely controlled by diffusion of oxygen along wet grain boundaries.
When applied to the Earth, the results on pyrophyllite suggest that the increase in electrical conductivity in rocks that
undergo dehydration should be taken into account in interpreting magnetotelluric surveys of regions with anomalously high
conductivity found above subducting plates. The results on CaCO3 indicate that grain boundary transport controls the electrical conductivity in fine-grained calcite rocks; hence calcite
mylonites may be detected using magnetotelluric methods. Order–disorder transformations, such as occurring in calcite, possibly
affect the physical properties of rocks (e.g., rheology) by changing the kinetics of atomistic transport processes. 相似文献

Microrater frequencies caused by fast (? 3 km s?1) ejecta have been determined using secondary targets in impact experiments. A primary projectile (steel sphere, diam 1.58 mm, mass 1.64 × 10?2 g) was shot in Duran glass with a velocity of 4.1 km s?1 by means of a light gas gun. The angular distribution of the secondary crater number densities shows a primary maximum around 25°, and a secondary maximum at about 60° from the primary target surface. The fraction of mass ejected at velocities of ? 3 km s?1 is only a factor of 7.5 × 10?5 of the primary projectile mass. A conservative calculation shows that the contribution of secondary microcraters (caused by fast ejecta) to primary microcrater densities on lunar rock surfaces (caused by interplanetary particles) is on the statistical average below 1% for any lunar surface orientation. Calculation of the interplanetary dust flux enhancement caused by Moon ejecta turned out to be in good agreement with Lunar Explorer 35in situ measurements. 相似文献

The generation and downstream modification of a cold dense Arctic shelf water plume were studied with moored current meters, thermistor chains and conductivity/temperature sensors deployed from August 1993 to September 1994 south of the Storfjord in the Svalbard Archipelago. These observations are compared to similar time series from 1991/92. In 1993/94, bottom water with temperatures close to the freezing point drained continuously from Storfjord between March and September with a mean speed of 0.14 m s−1. About 1.5 months after the plume front had left the Storfjord, it reached the shelf break, 150 km away. The plume had increased its width from 15 km to about 35 km, but its thickness of 50 m remained almost constant and it left the shelf edge at a similar speed. The increased volume transport and the change of temperature/salinity properties indicate an entrainment of 110% of ambient Atlantic water into the plume on its way from the production area to the shelf edge.The maximum salinity of the cold plume was 0.2 lower in 1993/94 than in 1991/92, whilst the temperature/salinity-range of the surrounding Atlantic water remained unchanged. Probably as a dynamic consequence, the speed of the plume was considerably lower in 1993/94. The lower salinity of the plume in 1993/94 is a result of both the 30% less ice formation in Storfjord, caused by lower heat flux and less open water, and a lower surface salinity at the beginning of ice formation. During its cruise phase, prior to encountering Jupiter, the Cosmic Dust Analyser (CDA) onboard the Cassini spacecraft returned time of flight mass spectra (TOF MS) of two interplanetary dust particles. Both particles were found to be iron-rich, with possible traces of hydrogen, carbon, nickel, chromium, manganese, titanium, vanadium and minor silicates. Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and potassium are also present as possible contaminants of the impact target of CDA. Silicates and magnesium do not feature predominantly in the spectra; this is surprising considering the expected dominance of silicate-rich minerals in interplanetary dust particles. The particle masses are and . The corresponding radii ranges for the particles, assuming densities from 7874-2500 kg m−3 are 0.7-4 μm and 2.6-6.8 μm, respectively. With the same density assumptions the β values (ratio of radiation pressure to gravitational force) are estimated as 0.027-0.21 and 0.016-0.06 respectively, allowing possible orbits to be calculated. The resulting orbits are bound and prograde with semi-major axes, eccentricities and inclinations in the region of 0.3-1.26 AU, 0.4-1.0 and 0-60° for the first particle and 0.8-2.5 AU, 0.2-0.9 and 0-30° for the second. The more probable orbits within these ranges indicate that the first particle is in an Aten-like orbit, whilst the second particle is in an Apollo-like orbit, despite both grains having very similar, predominantly metallic compositions. In this paper, the performance of the Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) model (t?+?27 h to t?+?51 h) in predicting precipitation is discussed. This model is the first, which has been verified over Iran. The spatial resolution of the model is 0.351° and the 24-h forecasts are compared with daily observations. The study concentrates on year 2001 and the precipitation measurements were collected from the data of 2,048 rain gauges in Iran. The accuracy of four different interpolation methods (nearest neighborhood, inverse distance, kriging, and upscaling) was investigated. Using cross-validation, the inverse distance method (IDM) with minimum mean error was applied. Verification results are given in terms of difference fields (mean error?=?0.46 mm/day), rank–order correlation coefficients (0.70), as well as accuracy scores (false alarm ratio?=?0.50 and probability of detection?=?0.60) and skill scores (true skill statistics [TSS]?=?0.45) in year 2001. The position of the rain band was only partly captured by the ECMWF model; however, the position of maximum precipitations agrees with the observations well. The results show that the high values of TSS are associated with the large amounts of precipitation (over 25 mm). Slight to moderate precipitation events have been underforecasted by the model (bias?<?1) and it leads to a small value of TSS for these thresholds (5–25 mm/day). The ECMWF model has better performance in high and mountainous regions than over flat terrain and in deserts. Comparing TSS over the Alborz and the Zagros Mountains, it is obvious that the ability of the model to predict the convective precipitation events needs some improvement. The amount of daily precipitation has been also slightly overestimated over Iran. From the beginning of January up to 21 March 2001, the ECMWF time series indicates an obvious phase shift of 1 day, although in other months, no phase shift is noticed. 相似文献

The scientific community has expressed strong interest to re-fly Stardust-like missions with improved instrumentation. We
propose a new mission concept, SARIM, that collects interstellar and interplanetary dust particles and returns them to Earth.
SARIM is optimised for the collection and discrimination of interstellar dust grains. Improved active dust collectors on-board
allow us to perform in-situ determination of individual dust impacts and their impact location. This will provide important
constraints for subsequent laboratory analysis.
The SARIM spacecraft will be placed at the L2 libration point of the Sun–Earth system, outside the Earth’s debris belts and
inside the solar-wind charging environment. SARIM is three-axes stabilised and collects interstellar grains between July and
October when the relative encounter speeds with interstellar dust grains are lowest (4 to 20 km/s). During a 3-year dust collection
period several hundred interstellar and several thousand interplanetary grains will be collected by a total sensitive area
of 1 m2. At the end of the collection phase seven collector modules are stored and sealed in a MIRKA-type sample return capsule.
SARIM will return the capsule containing the stardust to Earth to allow for an extraction and investigation of interstellar
