A cool period from about 11000 to 10 500 BP (11 to 10.5 ka) is recognized in pollen records from the southern Great Lakes area by the return of Picea and Abies dominance and by the persistence of herbs. The area of cooling appears centred on the Upper Great Lakes. A high-resolution record (ca. 9 mm/y) from a borehole in eastern Lake Erie reveals, in the same time interval, this pollen anomaly, isotope evidence of meltwater presence (a — 3 per mil shift in 18O and a +1.1 per mil shift in 13C), increased sand, and reduced detrital calcite content, all suggesting concurrent cooling of Lake Erie. The onset of cooling is mainly attributed to the effect of enhanced meltwater inflow on the relatively large upstream Main Lake Algonquin during the first eastward discharge of glacial Lake Agassiz. Termination of the cooling coincides with drainage of Lake Algonquin, and is attributed to loss of its cooling effectiveness associated with a substantial reduction in its surface area. It is hypothesized that the cold extra inflow effectively prolonged the seasonal presence of lake ice and the period of spring overturn in Lake Algonquin. The deep mixing would have greatly increased the thermal conductive capacity of this extensive lake, causing suppression of summer surface lakewater temperatures and reduction of onshore growing-degree days. Alternatively, a rapid flow of meltwater, buoyed on sediment-charged (denser) lakewater, may have kept the lake surface cold in summer. In order to investigate the effect of detention reservoirs on flood, the precipitation-runoff process as well as the reservoir routing was simulated with the HEC-HMS software. The model was run under four different scenarios (without a reservoir and with an empty, half-full, and full reservoir) and with different return periods of from 2 to 100 years in the Jafar Abad River basin, Golestan province, Iran. The statistical analysis of the results was based on one-way analysis of variance. To study the effect of reservoirs, two indices were used: the Flood Attenuation Rate (FAR) and Storage Ratio (SR). The results indicated that the construction of detention reservoirs leads to the decrease in peak discharge and the volume of flood that leaves the reservoir and postpones the incidence of the peak discharge. The influence of the reservoir diminishes with the prolongation of the return period. The maximum level of flood volume reduction for empty, half-full, and full reservoirs was 61.1, 33.2, and 0.8%, respectively, and for the peak discharge was 63.9, 32.8, and 6.6%, respectively. The maximum value of FAR for reservoirs under empty, half-full, and full conditions were 26, 19, and 7%, respectively. Similarly, the maximum SR for the empty and half-full reservoirs was 14 and 5%, respectively, thus showing the efficiency of reservoirs in flood control. Also, the results demonstrate that the efficiency of reservoirs in flood control not only depends on the reservoir volume and the amount of flood, but also on the geometric properties of the reservoir and weir. 相似文献

Extreme midlatitude cyclone characteristics, precipitation, wind speed events, their inter-relationships, and the connection
to large-scale atmospheric patterns are investigated in simulations of a prolonged cold period, known as the Maunder Minimum
from 1640 to 1715 and compared with today. An ensemble of six simulations for the Maunder Minimum as well as a control simulation
for perpetual 1990 conditions are carried out with a coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model, i.e., the Climate
Community System Model (CCSM). The comparison of the simulations shows that in a climate state colder than today the occurrence
of cyclones, the extreme events of precipitation and wind speed shift southward in all seasons in the North Atlantic and the
North Pacific. The extremes of cyclone intensity increases significantly in winter in almost all regions, which is related
to a stronger meridional temperature gradient and an increase in lower tropospheric baroclinicity. Extremes of cyclone intensity
in subregions of the North Atlantic are related to extremes in precipitation and in wind speed during winter. Moreover, extremes
of cyclone intensity are also connected to distinct large-scale atmospheric patterns for the different subregions, but these
relationships vanish during summer. Analyzing the mean 1,000 hPa geopotential height change of the Maunder Minimum simulations
compared with the control simulation, we find a similar pattern as the correlation pattern with the cyclone intensity index
of the southern Europe cyclones. This illustrates that changes in the atmospheric high-frequency, i.e., the simulated southward
shift of cyclones in the North Atlantic and the related increase of extreme precipitation and wind speed in particular in
the Mediterranean in winter, are associated with large-scale atmospheric circulation changes. 相似文献

Well-rounded gravels are described from moraine-mound complexes, diamicton forefields and modern englacial thrusts at the margins of four glaciers on the northern side of Brøggerhalvøya, northwest Spitsbergen. Their shape charcteristics are compared with modern and fossil glacigenic, modern beach and Early Weichselian beach gravels from this peninsula. The best discriminators of the well-rounded gravels have been found to be the percentage-frequency roundness histograms, the roundness mid-point and roundness range diagrams and the sphericity-roundness plots. It is concluded that the gravels have been derived by englacial thrusting from Early Weichselian or last interglacial beaches in the inner parts of the fjord and in the low level cirques when sea level reached at least 50m a.s.l. and deposited the beach gravels. The discrimination between gravel in basal diamictons, proglacial outwash and modern beaches is difficult as the reworking has resulted in little particle shape change. The organic composition and organic‐inorganic interaction in paper mill sludge (PS) solvent extracts (hexane, ethyl acetate, acetone and ethanol) and humic fractions, humic acid (HA) and humin (HU) were studied by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR), proton and carbon‐13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR; 13C NMR), Fourier‐transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and ultraviolet‐visible spectroscopy (UV‐vis). The strategy of fractionating the PS, sequentially, with organic solvents of increasing polarity is a reliable analytical procedure for humic substance sample separation because it results in more purified fractions. FTIR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR results showed that hexane extract consisted mainly of aliphatic hydrocarbon structures. Their contents in the extracts decreased as the polarity of the extracting solvent increased and the content of oxygen functional groups increased. Carboxylic and carboxylate functional groups were found in the acetone extract, and ester and ether functions were predominantly found in the ethanol extract. EPR spectra revealed some Fe3+ complexes with rhombic structure (g1 = 4.3; g2 = 9.0) in the humic fractions and in all solvent extracts, except hexane. Quasi‐octahedral Fe3+ complexes (g = 2.3; ΔHpp ≤ 400 G) were found in the HU fraction and in the acetone extract. The geochemical characteristics of two sections—the Permian–Triassic boundary (PTB) Guryul Ravine section, Kashmir Valley, Jammu and Kashmir, India; and the Attargoo section, Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh, India—have been studied in the context of provenance, paleo-weathering, and plate tectonic setting. These sections represent the siliciclastic sedimentary sequence from the Tethys Himalaya. The PTB siliciclastic sedimentary sequence in these regions primarily consists of sandstones and shales with variable thickness. Present studied sandstones and shales of both sections had chemical index of alteration values between 65 and 74; such values reveal low-to-moderate degree of chemical weathering. The chemical index of weathering in studied samples ranged from 71 to 94, suggesting a minor K-metasomatism effect on these samples. Plagioclase index of alteration in studied sections ranged from 68 to 92, indicating a moderate degree of weathering of plagioclase feldspars. The provenance discriminant function diagram suggests that the detritus involved in the formation of present studied siliciclastic sedimentary rocks fall in quartzose sedimentary and felsic igneous provenances. These sediments were deposited in a passive continental margin plate tectonic setting according to their location on a Si2O versus K2O/Na2O tectonic setting diagram. 相似文献

Most authors using statistical interpolation techniques on geodetic data have assumed isotropy for the undulation autocorrelation.
Tests of actual data,414 deflections of the vertical, indicate this assumption is not valid. The results of interpolation, however, are not very sensitive
to the parameters in the covariance function. A special limiting case for which statistical interpolation degenerates into
a completely deterministic process is given in the spherical domain. In this case the covariance function has absolutely no
effect on the results, so that the covariance of the output of a prediction need not be that assumed for the interpolation.
This provides a self-correcting process whereby the information in the data corrects for a poor choice of covariance function.
Estimates of the precision of the interpolation, on the other hand, are very sensitive to the covariance function, particularly
to the modeling of azimuth dependence. A simple procedure for generalizing isotropic functions to azimuth dependence is given,
which provides sufficiently accurate estimates of precision. The advisability of trend removal is illustrated by some numerical

LANDSAT-1 (ERTS-1) data of the complete scene, 1218-04320, covering an area 185 Km x 185 Km in the Godavari Valley, India was computer processed in the Computer Division of the Oil and Natural Gas Commissíon to produce an imagery of readily recognizable land forms. Comparison with the original maps supplied by NASA showed an amazing agreement in quality. Computer oriented data enhancement techniques were developed and the data was reprocessed with the help of these techniques. The resulting imagery reveal an improvement over the originals. Richtungsstatistische Parameter werden für jede Gruppe berechnet. Außerdem wird ein Signifikanztest für die Trennung der Gruppen voneinander durchgeführt.
A cluster algorithm for orientation data is presented. It separates groupes of neighboring data by the use of a variable measure of separation. Statistical orientation parameters are calculated for each group and a significance test for the separation of the groups is carried out.
