Interpretations of a decline in foreign-area specialization have raised concerns about the capacity of geography in the United States to serve the expected increase in demands for foreign-area expertise. An assessment of foreign-area dissertations awarded by U.S. geography programs over a 15-year period (1977–1991) fails to support the concerns raised. No significant declines, if any at all, are found for early career interest and research in foreign areas. Several caveats are warranted, however. Geography has lost three doctoral programs with strong foreign-area dissertation records for the period in question. Also, non-U.S. citizens, many of whom do not remain in the United States after completion of their doctorate work, account for a significant proportion of foreign-area dissertations. Various questions that must be addressed to analyze the capacity question more broadly are identified.  相似文献

The report presents an analysis of a unique data set demonstrating the influence of geocryological processes on the 75-km Chara-China Railway track (northern Transbaikal region). The originality of these investigations lies in the study of the influence of natural processes on the road in the absence of any repair works or protective and compensating measures for a long period of time (1998~2014). Epidote-bearing porphyritic dikes (whole rock analysis: SiO2?=?55–65 wt. %, MgO <2.1 wt. %, K2O <2.5 wt. %, Al2O3 >17 wt. %, Na2O + K2O?=?5.7–9.4 wt. %) situated in the continental margin zone, the Middle Urals, Russian Federation have been dated using SHRIMP U-Pb zircon techniques and give a Middle Devonian age of 388?±?2 Ma and 389?±?6 Ma. The porphyries contain phenocrysts of magmatic epidote (Ps?=?17–25 %), Ca- and Mn-rich (CaO >9 wt. %; MnO >6 wt. %) almandine garnet, Al-rich (Al2O3?=?12–16 wt. %) amphibole, titanite, plagioclase, biotite, muscovite, apatite, and quartz. 60 to 70 % groundmass of the porphyritic dikes consists of fine-grained albite, quartz, and K-feldspar. A variety of thermobarometric estimations, plus comparison with published experimental data indicate that the phenocryst assemblage was stable between 5 and 11 kbar and 690 to 800 °C. Oxygen fugacity was close to or greater than logfo2 = Ni-NiO + 1. Later stage formation of the quartz-feldspar groundmass took place at hypabyssal conditions, corresponding to 1 to 2 kbar and 660 to 690 °C. The porphyritic dikes are metaluminous to slightly peraluminous (ACNK?=?0.7–1.17). They are enriched in REE and depleted Nb and Ti. They show features typical of subduction-related magmas. Chemical composition and isotopic ratios of 86Sr/87Sri?=?0.709–0.720 suggest that both mantle- and deep crustal-derived materials were involved in their petrogenesis.  相似文献

Long-term shoreline shifts reflect eustatic changes, tectonic activity, and sediment supply. Available lithostratigraphical data from northern Africa, Arabia, and the Tethys Hymalaya, coupled with facies interpretations, permit us to trace late Silurian–Middle Devonian long-term shoreline shifts across the northern Gondwanan margin and to compare them with constraints on global sea-level changes. Our analysis establishes a regression–transgression cycle. Its coincident global sea-level changes reveal the dominance of the eustatic control. A transgression–regression cycle observed in Arabia is best explained by regional subsidence. Our study highlights the importance of constraining the role of regional tectonics when interpreting shoreline shifts.  相似文献

The internal properties of the neutron star crust can be probed by observing the epoch of thermal relaxation. After the supernova explosion, powerful neutrino emission quickly cools the stellar core, while the crust stays hot. The cooling wave then propagates through the crust, as a result of its finite thermal conductivity. When the cooling wave reaches the surface (age 10–100 yr) , the effective temperature drops sharply from 250 eV to 30 or 100 eV, depending on the cooling model. The crust relaxation time is sensitive to the (poorly known) microscopic properties of matter of subnuclear density, such as the heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and superfluidity of free neutrons. We calculate the cooling models with the new values of the electron thermal conductivity in the inner crust, based on a realistic treatment of the shapes of atomic nuclei. Superfluid effects may shorten the relaxation time by a factor of 4. The comparison of theoretical cooling curves with observations provides a potentially powerful method of studying the properties of the neutron superfluid and highly unusual atomic nuclei in the inner crust.  相似文献

Abstract— Glacial deposits at the margins of the ice cap of the northern island of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, Russia, contain numerous spherules and rare scoriaceous particles thought to be extraterrestrial. The 1 Kyr old glacier has decreased in volume and coverage during the last 40 years, leaving the spherules contained in the ice at the margins of the glacier where they can be easily collected. The spherules are similar in their appearance, texture, and mineralogy to cosmic spherules found in deep‐sea sediments in Greenland and Antarctica. Silicate spherules have typical bar‐like textures (75%) or porphyritic textures (15%), while other spherules are glassy (7%). The spherules from Novaya Zemlya are altered only slightly. There are spherules consisting of iron oxides, metal cores with iron oxide rims, a continuous network of iron oxide dendrites in a glass matrix, and particles rich in chromite (3%). Some spherules contain metal droplets and relict forsterite and low‐Ca pyroxene. Silicate spherule compositions match compositions of other cosmic spherules. Both Nova Zemlya and other cosmic spherules are close to carbonaceous chondrite matrices in patterns of variations for Ca, Mg, Si, and Al, which might suggest that their predecessor was similar to carbonaceous chondrite matrices. Unmelted micrometeorites are generally depleted in Ca and Mg and enriched in Al relative to cosmic spherules. The depletion of the micrometeorites in Ca and Mg can be connected with their terrestrial alteration (Kurat et al. 1994), while the Al enrichment seems to be primary.  相似文献

We present numerical simulations of the April 27, 1975, landslide event in the northern extreme of Kitimat Arm, British Columbia. The event caused a tsunami with an estimated wave height of 8.2 m at Kitimat First Nations Settlement and 6.1 m at Clio Bay, at the northern and southern ends of Kitimat Arm, respectively. We use the nonhydrostatic model NHWAVE to perform a series of numerical experiments with different slide configurations and with two approaches to modeling the slide motion: a solid slide with motion controlled by a basal Coulomb friction and a depth-integrated numerical slide based on Newtonian viscous flow. Numerical tests show that both models are capable of reproducing observations of the event if an adequate representation of slide geometry is used. We further show that comparable results are obtained using estimates of either Coulomb friction angle or slide viscosity that are within reasonable ranges of values found in previous literature.  相似文献

A new pyroxene with formula (Na0.86Mg0.14)(Mg0.57Ti0.43)Si2O6, synthesized in a high-pressure toroidal ‘anvil-with-hole’ apparatus at P = 7 GPa and T = 1700 °C, was characterized by X-ray single-crystal diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The compound was found to be monoclinic (R1 = 2.56 %), space group C2/c, with lattice parameters a = 9.687(2), b = 8.814(1), c = 5.290(1) Å, β = 107.853(2)°, V = 430.08(1) Å3. The coexistence of Mg and Ti4+ at the M1 site does not induce strong modifications either to the M1 site or to the adjacent M2 site. The Raman spectrum of synthetic Na–Ti-pyroxene was obtained for the first time and compared with that of Mg2Si2O6 (with very low concentrations of Na and Ti). The structural characterization of the Na–Ti–Mg-pyroxene is important, because the study of its thermodynamic constants provides new constraints on thermobarometry of the upper mantle assemblages.  相似文献

A new picromerite-group mineral, nickelpicromerite, K2Ni(SO4)2?·?6H2O (IMA 2012–053), was found at the Vein #169 of the Ufaley quartz deposit, near the town of Slyudorudnik, Kyshtym District, Chelyabinsk area, South Urals, Russia. It is a supergene mineral that occurs, with gypsum and goethite, in the fractures of slightly weathered actinolite-talc schist containing partially vermiculitized biotite and partially altered sulfides: pyrrhotite, pentlandite, millerite, pyrite and marcasite. Nickelpicromerite forms equant to short prismatic or tabular crystals up to 0.07 mm in size and anhedral grains up to 0.5 mm across, their clusters or crusts up to 1 mm. Nickelpicromerite is light greenish blue. Lustre is vitreous. Mohs hardness is 2–2½. Cleavage is distinct, parallel to {10–2}. D meas is 2.20(2), D calc is 2.22 g cm?3. Nickelpicromerite is optically biaxial (+), α?=?1.486(2), β?=?1.489(2), γ?=?1.494(2), 2Vmeas =75(10)°, 2Vcalc =76°. The chemical composition (wt.%, electron-microprobe data) is: K2O 20.93, MgO 0.38, FeO 0.07, NiO 16.76, SO3 37.20, H2O (calc.) 24.66, total 100.00. The empirical formula, calculated based on 14 O, is: K1.93Mg0.04Ni0.98S2.02O8.05(H2O)5.95. Nickelpicromerite is monoclinic, P21/c, a?=?6.1310(7), b?=?12.1863(14), c?=?9.0076(10) Å, β?=?105.045(2)°, V?=?649.9(1) Å3, Z?=?2. Eight strongest reflections of the powder XRD pattern are [d,Å-I(hkl)]: 5.386–34(110); 4.312–46(002); 4.240–33(120); 4.085–100(012, 10–2); 3.685–85(031), 3.041–45(040, 112), 2.808–31(013, 20–2, 122), 2.368–34(13–3, 21–3, 033). Nickelpicromerite (single-crystal X-ray data, R?=?0.028) is isostructural to other picromerite-group minerals and synthetic Tutton’s salts. Its crystal structure consists of [Ni(H2O)6]2+ octahedra linked to (SO4)2? tetrahedra via hydrogen bonds. K+ cations are coordinated by eight anions. Nickelpicromerite is the product of alteration of primary sulfide minerals and the reaction of the acid Ni-sulfate solutions with biotite.  相似文献
