Segmentation along convergent margins controls earthquake magnitude and location, but the physical causes of segment boundaries, and their impact on earthquake rupture dynamics, are still poorly understood. One aspect of the 2004 and 2005 great Sumatra–Andaman earthquakes is their abrupt termination along a common boundary. This has led to speculation on the nature of the boundary, its origin and why it was not breached.

For the first time the boundary has been imaged and, with newly acquired marine geophysical data, we demonstrate that a ridge on the subducting Indo-Australian oceanic crust may exert a control on margin segmentation. This suggests a lower plate influence on margin structure, particularly its segmentation. The ridge is masked by the sedimentary cover in the trench. Its most likely trend is NNE–SSW. It is interpreted as a fracture zone on the subducting oceanic plate. A ramp or tear along the eastern flank of the subducting fracture zone beneath Simeulue Island may be considered as an intensification factor in terms of rupture propagation barrier.  相似文献

This study presents a formulation for field problems using hybrid polygonal finite elements, taking steady state seepage through a porous material as the focus. We make comparisons with a conventional finite element formulation based on a single primary variable, focussing on the advantages of the hybrid formulation in terms of flux field accuracy and extension to convex polygonal shaped elements. For the unconfined case, we adopt a head dependent hydraulic conductivity that does not require remeshing. The performance of the hybrid polygonal element formulation is demonstrated through a series of numerical examples. The results show a sensitivity of the location of the free surface in unconfined seepage to mesh configuration for hybrid quadrilateral meshes with various aspect ratios, but not for hybrid polygonal meshes with various orientations and irregularity. Examination of the free surface location results for several conforming shape function options shows an insensitivity to choice of interpolation function, provided that it conforms with the assumptions in the formulation. The debris flow of 28 August 1997 which occurred in the Riale Buffaga, a torrent channel in the territory of the village of Ronco s./Ascona (Ticino, Switzerland), has been simulated with a good degree of reliability due to the existence of morphologic surveys of the torrent channel preceding the flood event and the presence of a rain gauge that registered the rainfall event at a resolution of 10 minutes. With these data it is possible to conduct a quantitative analysis of the effect of a forest fire on the hydrogeological response of a given catchment. In the case at hand, a 10‐year rainfall event caused a 100‐ to 200‐year flood event. This result clearly quantifies the possible consequences of a forest fire in terms of territorial safety. A procedure for the digestion and analysis of quartz samples was developed to measure trace element concentrations in natural quartz. The certified glass sand reference material UNS-SpS was chosen to assess the precision, accuracy and detection limit of the analytical method. Quartz was digested with HF/HNO3 in a closed glassy carbon vessel and analysed by means of quadrupole ICP-MS with external calibration. Analyte concentrations of the sand UNS-SpS were compared with certified and other values from the literature. The abundances of a number of elements (Pr, Gd, Ho and Er) in the reference material are reported here for the first time. The procedure was then applied to three quartz samples from different geological settings to show that trace element data by ICP-MS can distinguish the origin of the sample.  相似文献

The exchange of NO3 radicals with the aqueous-phase was investigated at room temperature (293 K) in a series of wetted denuders. From these experiments, the uptake coefficient of NO3 was determined on 0.1 M NaCl solutions and was found to be (NO3) 2 × 10-3 in good agreement with recent studies. The Henry coefficient of NO3 was estimated to be KH(NO3) = 1.8 M · atm-1, with a (2) uncertainty of ±3 M · atm-1. From the upper limit for the Henry coefficient (KH = 5 M · atm-1) and available thermodynamic data, the redox potential of dissolved NO3/NO 3 is estimated to be in the range of 2.3 to 2.5 V. This range is at the lower boundary of earlier estimates. The results are discussed in the light of a recent publication. Based on our data and a model of the transport and chemistry in the liquid film, an upper limit is derived for the product of the Henry coefficient KH and the rate coefficient k 10 of the potential reaction NO3 + H2O HNO3 + OH. For KH = 0.6 M · atm-1, we find k 10 < 0.05 s-1 · atm-1, i.e., about 100 times smaller than what was suggested by Rudich and co-workers. Because of its small solubility, heterogeneous removal of NO3 is only important under conditions where the dissolved NO3 is removed quickly from equilibrium, for example by reactions with Cl or HSO 3 ions in the liquid-phase. Otherwise, heterogenous removal should mainly proceed via N2O5.  相似文献

The absorption cross-sections of water vapor and oxygen were measured, using a low-pressure radio frequency discharge through traces of hydrogen in argon as a light source for Ly() radiation. The cross-sections are H2O = 1.59 × 10–17 cm2 and O2 = 1.13 × 10–20 + 1.72 × 10–23 for water and oxygen, respectively, where P is the oxygen pressure in units of Torr. Ly() lamps, such as used for this work, are important light sources for photochemical laboratory work and find applications for trace-gas detection in the atmosphere. For the latter application, accurate cross-sections of water vapor and oxygen are needed.  相似文献

Raman vibrational spectra and X-ray diffractometer scans were obtained from experimentally shocked samples of oligoclase (An19) and andesine (An49). Some 11 oligoclase and 15 andesine targets were shocked between 24 and 40 GPa to address the transition from crystalline to diaplectic states and to explore differences in the structural state of diaplectic feldspar glasses (maskelynite) as a function of peak shock stress. Thy symmetrical VS (T-O-T) (T=Si or Al) stretch bands are the most persistent. They disappear, however, in the noise of an unusually strong luminescent spectrum at > 32 GPa in the oligoclase and at > 30 GPa in the andesine; i.e., at pressures where transition to diaplectic glass is complete. The Raman investigations yield a maskelynite structure that is probably one of a multitude of very small domains with some order, but with a large range of local properties on the scale of small domains, either in heterogeneous size-distribution of domains or in their detailed order, if not both. This results in a very large number of Raman photon-phonon frequencies unlike glasses derived from quenched melts. Our study corroborates conclusions by others, that diaplectic glasses may be the quench products of very dense, disordered phases that exist during shock compression and that subsequently relax to these unusually dense glasses that are only known from shock processes. An origin by relaxation of highly ordered, genuine high pressure polymorphs possessing the structure of hollandite is unlikely, as no evidence for any six-fold Si-coordination was found. Detailed luminescent emission spectra were taken of the oligoclase samples and they show disappearance of the IR band and a strengthening of the green band (the blue band could not be detected with a primary radiation of wavelength 448 nm). This supports previous views that the disappearance of IR emission is most likely caused by shock-induced changes of the crystal field near Fe3+ sites, rather than due to quenching by Fe2+. The X-ray studies were primarily intended to explore whether differences in structural states of maskelynite occur on sufficiently large scales to be detected by standard diffractometry methods. This is not the case. X-ray diffractometer patterns are grossly similar, if not identical, in samples shocked between 30 and 40 GPa and may not be used to fine-tune the shock histories of naturally produced diaplectic glasses.  相似文献

The mountain belts of the Dzungarian Alatau (SE Kazakhstan) and the Tien Shan are part of the actively deforming India–Asia collision zone but how the strain is partitioned on individual faults remains poorly known. Here we use terrace mapping, topographic profiling, and 10Be exposure dating to constrain the slip rate of the 160-km-long Usek thrust fault, which defines the southern front of the Dzungarian Alatau. In the eastern part of the fault, where the Usek River has formed five terraces (T1–T5), the Usek thrust fault has vertically displaced terrace T4 by 132 ± 10 m. At two sites on T4, exposure dating of boulders, amalgamated quartz pebbles, and sand from a depth profile yielded 10Be ages of 366 ± 60 ka and 360 + 77/− 48 ka (both calculated for an erosion rate of 0.5 mm/ka). Combined with the vertical offset and a 45–70° dip of the Usek fault, these age constraints result in vertical and horizontal slip rates of ~ 0.4 and ~ 0.25 mm/a, respectively. These rates are below the current resolution of GPS measurements and highlight the importance of determining slip rates for individual faults by dating deformed landforms to resolve the pattern of strain distribution across intracontinental mountain belts.  相似文献

The variation of the equilibrium line altitude can be used as an indicator for glacier mass balance variability. Snow lines at the end of the ablation period are suitable proxies for the annual equilibrium line altitude on glaciers. We investigate snow lines at Purogangri ice cap on the central Plateau in order to study the interannual variability of glacier mass balance. Datasets of the daily Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer snow product MOD10A1 were used to infer transient snow line variability during 2001–2012 and to derive regional‐scale, annual equilibrium line altitude. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer snow albedo embedded within the snow product was compared with high‐resolution Landsat imagery. An albedo threshold was established to differentiate between ice and snow and the 13th percentile of the altitudes of snow‐covered pixels was chosen to represent the snow line altitude. The second maximum of the snow line altitudes in the ablation period was taken as a proxy for the annual equilibrium line altitude. A linear correlation analysis was carried out (1) between interannual variability of the equilibrium line altitude at Purogangri ice cap and various climate elements derived from the High Asia Reanalysis, and (2) between interannual variability of the equilibrium line altitude and the circulation indices North Atlantic Oscillation and Indian Summer Monsoon. Results suggest that air temperature and meridional wind speed above ground in July, as well as the lower tropospheric zonal wind in June and August play a crucial role in the development of the annual equilibrium line altitude.  相似文献
