We have studied the extent to which diffusion-thermal heat flow affects H+ temperatures in the high-latitude topside ionosphere. Such a heat flow occurs whenever there are H+?O+ relative drifts. From our study we have found that at high-latitudes, where H+ flows up and out of the topside ionosphere, diffusion-thermal heat flow acts to reduce H+ temperatures by 500–600 K at altitudes above about 900 km.  相似文献

By considering the integrals of the motion of charged particles moving in one-dimensional current sheets, a simple and exact proof is given that particles which are either magnetically or electrostatically trapped about such a current sheet exhibit zero net drift. The transition to the special case of a strictly neutral sheet, a limit remaining unclear from previous studies, is also elucidated. Finally, the relationship between the results and existing self-consistent current sheet solutions is discussed.  相似文献

The dissociation of N2 by electron impact and by e.u.v. photo-absorption is studied, and it is shown that the forbidden predissociation of the numerous 1Πu and 1Σu+ valence and Rydberg states of N2 in the 11–24eV energy range is the dominant mechanism for N atom production. By measuring the absolute emission cross sections for the e.u.v. singlet bands of N2 and by using the generalized oscillator strength data of Lassettre (1974), it has been possible to construct a detailed model of the total N2 dissociation cross section which is in good agreement with the measurements of Winters (1966) and Niehaus (1967) and provides some insights into the maximum possible N(2D) yield from dissociative excitation. The total cross section for exciting N2 e.u.v. radiation in the 800Å–1100Å wavelength range has been measured and found to have a value of 3.4 ×10?17 cm2 at 100 eV under optically thin conditions. Although this result implies that large fluxes of e.u.v. photons should be excited in auroral substorms and in the airglow, they are not observed, and we show that this development is a consequence of radiation entrapment and predissociation. The total cross section for dissociating N2 by electron impact is given for optically thin and thick media. And some questions concerning the energy budget of a magnetospheric storm which are raised by these results, are discussed.  相似文献

Preliminary results of polarization measurements at three solar flares of July 5 and 6, 1974, are given. The measurements were performed at h 15 keV with Thomson-scattering polarimeter on the Intercosmos 11 satellite.At the decay phase of the flare on July 5 we obtained P = 3.4–5.0%, which did not exclude some contribution from non-thermal processes. At the flares of July 6 we found P =1.0–1.9% and P = 0.1–2.0%, respectively: neither value exceeds the level of statistical fluctuations.Presented at XVIII COSPAR Meeting (VARNA, May–June 1975), contribution III.B.2.9.  相似文献

Vertical small scale velocities deduced from highly resolved spectra in the center of the solar disk, obtained with a RCA image intensifier tube, are discussed. As a main result we find that the velocities of small elements (< 2) are remarkably larger in active regions around sunspots than in the quiet Sun. Temperature fluctuations induced in very small (r10–3 ) interstellar grains by the absorption of photons from the ultra-violet radiation field or by energy released on molecule formation are shown to lead to significant gas heating due to thermal desorption of condensed atoms or molecules. For clouds with N(H)=1–10×1020 cm–2, heating rates due to this process are comparable to direct heating by cosmic rays or grain photoelectrons.  相似文献

The expansion of the solar wind in divergent flux tubes is calculated by taking into account a magnetic acceleration of the particles, analogous to the magnetic mirror effect.The resulting force term included in the magnetohydrodynamical equations describes a conversion of thermal into kinetic energy. This causes an additional acceleration of the solar wind plasma which has never been taken into account before. The force is directed opposite to the magnetic field gradient. Consequently, in this case the solar wind velocity increases faster to its asymptotic value than it does for corresponding nonmagnetic solutions. Therefore inside and close to the solar corona markedly higher velocities are found. Compared to strictly hydrodynamical models, the critical point is shifted towards the Sun, and the radial decrease of the ratio of thermal to kinetic energy is faster.The necessary prerequisites for these calculations are (a) that the gyroperoid g of the plasma particles is much shorter than the Coulomb collision time c , and (b) that the collision time c is shorter than the characteristic time d in which an appreciable amount of thermal anisotropy is built up. Thus it is (a) insured that the particles have established magnetic moments and follow the guiding center approximation, and (b) an almost isotropic velocity distribution function is maintained which, in this first approximation of a purely radial expansion, justifies the use of isotropic pressures and temperatures.Both (a) and (b) are shown to be fulfilled in a region around the Sun out to about 20R , and thermal anisotropies developing outside of this region could explain the observed magnetically aligned anisotropies at 1 AU.  相似文献

We here investigate the motion of particles in a dipole magnetic field under the assumption of conservation of the first two adiabatic invariants. The results are then combined with Liouville's theorem to obtain the variation of the distribution function, and hence the plasma bulk parameters with L-shell. A comparison of the numerical results with recently published analytical approximations is made. Finally, the results are used to describe the structure of the ring current plasma in the outer radiatoin zone, the effects of the Alfvén layers being quantitatively evaluated for a simple electric field model.  相似文献

The July 12, 1973, occultation of Europa by Io was observed in 30 wavelength channels in the spectral region λλ3200-11, 000 Å with the 200-inch Hale telescope and a multichannel spectrometer. The data are presented in absolute units above the Earth's atmosphere. The data are analyzed to obtain the spectral reflectivity of seven localized areas on the disk of Europa centered on 324°W longitude. The equatorial material is confirmed to be darker than the eastward-skewed bright north polar cap and a hint is evident that the darker material as well may be somewhat redder than the cap material.  相似文献
