Dredging across the northeast rim of the summit crater of Loihi Seamount recovered several morphologically similar but chemically and mineralogically distinct hydrothermal deposits encrusting the surface of fresh pillow lava talus. The multicolored deposits suggest a precipitation sequence that may be controlled by an oxidation-reduction gradient in which smectite ranging in composition from Fe-montmorillonite to nontronite has precipitated along with iron oxide under slightly reducing conditions. This deposition was apparently followed by amorphous iron oxide and silica precipitation, possibly under more oxic conditions. Oxygen isotope geothermometry indicates formation temperatures in the range of 31–57°C for the Loihi smectites. Trace element enrichments appear to be positively correlated with the isotopic formation temperature of the smectite, suggesting either increased trace element solubility within the higher-temperature vent fluids or increased smectite and iron oxide scavenging with increased precipitation rates. The trace element abundances further suggest the presence of polymetallic sulfides that either are directly associated with the smectites as amorphous phases or occur beneath these deposits in the volcanic pile of the seamount.  相似文献

A detailed paleointensity study was made of a sequence of 70 successive lava flows of the Piton des Neiges volcano on the island of La Réunion (Indian Ocean). Radiometric dating brackets the age of this sequence between 130 ± 3 ka and 72 ± 3 ka. Rock magnetic investigations show that titanomagnetites in the pseudo single domain range are the main magnetic carrier of the Natural Remanent Magnetisation (NRM). Over 350 samples were used for paleointensity determinations carried out with the Thellier method in vacuum or in an argon atmosphere. Of these, 89 samples yielded reliable results, with within-flow scatter often lower than 20%. These results indicate that the geomagnetic field intensity has varied at La Réunion between 13 and 65 μT during the period of time explored. The average value, 42 μT, is higher than the present field at La Réunion (35 μT). The results from the upper part of the section are consistent with previous results obtained for the 82–98 ka period also at La Réunion [1] and document a broad low around 95 ka. not associated with large directional changes. On a larger geographic scale, the paleointensity values from La Réunion are significantly higher than those obtained from Mount Etna [2]. Precise comparison is, however, difficult because of the lack of detail in the Etna results. In the lower part of the section, a marked intensity low, coinciding with significant deviation from the dipole field direction is observed at 115 ka and could correspond to the end of the Blake event.  相似文献

In the north Tyrrhenian region and adjoining shores of Alpine Corsica and central Italy, four magmatic phases (15–14; 8–6; 5–2; and 1.3–0.1 Ma) are present which consist prevailingly of either old acidic and lamproitic rocks or young (1.3–0.1 Ma) basic volcanics with potassic–ultrapotassic affinity (the rocks of the K and HK series of the Roman province, and the kamafugitic rocks). Composition, age and location of the igneous phases reveal a geochemical polarity oriented from west to east. The episodes of magmatic activity reflect the evolution of the geodynamic environment (ensialic plate convergence): backarc stretching and attenuation of an Alpine orogenic wedge were accompanied by the eastward roll-back and progressive steepening of the descending Adria plate. The latter process led to enhanced metasomatic modifications of the mantle wedge composition and to eruption of the large volumes of KS and HKS volcanic rocks in central Italy (0.6–0.1 Ma).  相似文献

A seismic sequence in central Italy from August 2016 to January 2017 affected groundwater dynamics in fractured carbonate aquifers. Changes in spring discharge, water-table position, and streamflow were recorded for several months following nine Mw 5.0–6.5 seismic events. Data from 22 measurement sites, located within 100 km of the epicentral zones, were analyzed. The intensity of the induced changes were correlated with seismic magnitude and distance to epicenters. The additional post-seismic discharge from rivers and springs was found to be higher than 9 m3/s, totaling more than 0.1 km3 of groundwater release over 6 months. This huge and unexpected contribution increased streamflow in narrow mountainous valleys to previously unmeasured peak values. Analogously to the L’Aquila 2009 post-earthquake phenomenon, these hydrogeological changes might reflect an increase of bulk hydraulic conductivity at the aquifer scale, which would increase hydraulic heads in the discharge zones and lower them in some recharge areas. The observed changes may also be partly due to other mechanisms, such as shaking and/or squeezing effects related to intense subsidence in the core of the affected area, where effects had maximum extent, or breaching of hydraulic barriers.

Preparatory talks to the next round of negotiations seem to indicate that a comprehensive agreement to mitigate climate change will not be easily attainable, despite the intentions of the US administration and the high expectations surrounding the Copenhagen meeting. One key reason is to what extent fast growing economies, and especially China, should take actions to reduce their growth of emissions. This paper argues that a turning point for international negotiations on climate change could be achieved if China were to agree on carbon obligations in the future. Results from modelling work suggest that the optimal investment behaviour is to anticipate the implementation of a climate policy by roughly 10 years, and that thus future commitments—if credible—could lead to significantly earlier steps towards carbon mitigation. If fast growing economies, and foremost China, believe in the long term objective of global stabilization of carbon concentrations, it might be economically rationale to sign on future targets, provided developed countries take on immediate action. Such a provision could be beneficial for both the developing and developed world.  相似文献

The diversity of epiphytic lichens and mercury concentrations in lichen samples were measured to monitor the release of airborne pollutants from the industrial exploitation of geothermal resources in the Mt. Amiata area (Italy). The lichen biodiversity showed a general condition of moderate environmental alteration around the geothermal power plants, contrasting with the low environmental alteration of the remaining sites investigated. According to the accumulated Hg in lichen thalli, it was possible to estimate mean Hg and H2S concentrations in the air, which resulted in very good agreement with values measured instrumentally. Based on these data and the correlation between lichen diversity values and Hg concentrations in lichens, it was possible to calculate the threshold of 8 μg/m3 H2S as responsible for the worsening from low to moderate environmental alteration according to the biodiversity of epiphytic lichens, and to infer that around geothermal power plants, although not toxic to humans, H2S concentrations are such to alter the nasal quality of the air. Based on the growth rate of X. parietina, it was possible to convert Hg concentrations into estimates of average Hg deposition rates, which showed fluxes of the order of 65–100 mg/ha/y, indicating a dispersions factor of about 104 for the Hg emitted from the geothermal power plants.  相似文献

The Stern Review has played an enormous role in making the world of business aware of the challenge of long-term climate change. In order to make real progress on the basis of this awareness, it is important to pay attention to the difference between human suffering and losses of gross domestic product (GDP). The Review has compared climate change to experiences of suffering like World War I. That war, however, hardly affected global GDP. The long-term damages to be expected from business-as-usual greenhouse gas emissions include loss of the coastal cities of the world over the next millennia. This would be an act of unprecedented barbarism, regardless of whether it would slow down economic growth or perhaps even accelerate it. Business leaders worried about climate change need to pay attention to the tensions between ethical and economic concerns. Otherwise, a credibility crisis threatens global climate policy. An important step to establish the credibility needed for effective climate policy will be to gradually move towards a regime where emission permits are auctioned, not handed out as hidden subsidies. The revenues generated by permit auctions should be used to establish a global system of regional climate funds.  相似文献

A damage scenario based on observational data collected in L’Aquila Municipality after the 6th April 2009 earthquake is compared with a predicted damage scenario derived from the application of a simplified analytical method for seismic vulnerability assessment of Reinforced Concrete (RC) buildings at large scale. The observational damage scenario is derived from a database of 131 RC buildings located in the Municipality of L’Aquila, which after the 2009 earthquake were subjected to post-earthquake usability assessment procedure. The simplified analytical approach adopted is based on the Capacity Spectrum Method to evaluate seismic capacity at different Damage States (DSs) based on the displacement capacity of structural and non-structural elements. DSs and the corresponding displacement capacity are defined through the interpretation of the observational-based DSs provided by the European Macroseismic Scale EMS-98. Data predicted by the adopted methodology are in good agreement with the observed damage distribution. The observed damage scenario is also compared with predicted scenarios derived from other methodologies from literature.  相似文献

A representation of seismic hazard is proposed for Italy based on the zone-free approach developed by Woo (BSSA 86(2):353–362, 1996a), which is based on a kernel estimation method governed by concepts of fractal geometry and self-organized seismicity, not requiring the definition of seismogenic zoning. The purpose is to assess the influence of seismogenic zoning on the results obtained for the probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) of Italy using the standard Cornell’s method. The hazard has been estimated for outcropping rock site conditions in terms of maps and uniform hazard spectra for a selected site, with 10 % probability of exceedance in 50 years. Both spectral acceleration and spectral displacement have been considered as ground motion parameters. Differences in the results of PSHA between the two methods are compared and discussed. The analysis shows that, in areas such as Italy, characterized by a reliable earthquake catalog and in which faults are generally not easily identifiable, a zone-free approach can be considered a valuable tool to address epistemic uncertainty within a logic tree framework.  相似文献

In active geodynamic areas, such as the Italian Southern Apennines, the specific structural conditions have a profound effect on both the superficial and deep gravitational evolution of slopes. Chain sectors commonly exhibit structural complexities due to the superimposition, in space and time, of diverse tectonic stress fields. In this paper, attention is focused on particular structural configurations, connected to the tectonic quaternary phases that have affected the Southern Apennines, constituting a peculiar type of lateral spread gravitational deformations – which have not been previously described.The study area is characterized by regional roughly east-verging overthrusts (Holigo–Miocene). Superimposed on these, is a system of transpressive thrust ramps (Quaternary), connected to the activity of strike-slip faults. The latest tectonic phase, still active, has been characterized by an extensional stress field, which has produced differentiated uplifts along normal faults. All these factors have encouraged an intense and widespread processes of erosion, the creation of considerable relief energy and the development of both superficial and deep gravitational phenomena.It has been ascertained that the late extensional phases favoured gravitational reactivations (with normal movements) along those most recent thrust ramps whose attitude was kinematically consistent with the main extension direction of the stress field. Such reactivations were accommodated by antithetic neo-formational structures – these are also characterized by normal kinematics. Overall, such mechanisms lead to the individuation of wedge-shaped rock portions delimited by the normally reactivated thrust ramps, on one side, and by the antithetic structures, on the other.Structural wedges represent a particular type of lateral spread phenomena. On the basis of their orientation with respect to the orography, three typical situations have been defined: (1) wedge perpendicular to the ridge; (2) wedge parallel to the ridge; (3) wedge oblique to the ridge.In this paper three Calabrian case studies, exemplifying the above-mentioned situations, are described. The same framework can be applied to sectors of chain with an analogous structural setting, for a better understanding of the kinematic features of observed gravitational phenomena.  相似文献
