There is a widespread interest to digitize the precious information contained in the astronomical plate archives, both for
the preservation of their content and for its fast distribution to all interested researchers in order to achieve their better
scientific exploitation. This paper presents the first results of our large-scale project to digitize the archive of plates
of the Italian Astronomical Observatories and of the Specola Vaticana. Similar systems, composed by commercial flat-bed retro-illuminated
scanners plus dedicated personal computers and acquisition and analysis software, have been installed in all participating
Institutes. Ad-hoc codes have been developed to acquire the data, to test the suitability of the machines to our scientific needs, and to reduce
the digital data in order to extract the astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic content. Two more elements complete the
overall project: the provision of high quality BVRI CCD sequences in selected fields with the Campo Imperatore telescopes,
and the distribution of the digitized information to all interested researchers via the Web. The methods we have derived in
the course of this project have been already applied successfully to plates taken by other Observatories, for instance at

The importance of underground structures in transportation and utility networks makes their vulnerability to earthquakes a
sensitive issue. Underground facilities are usually less vulnerable to earthquakes compared to above-ground structures, but
the associated risk may be relevant, since even a low level of damage may affect the serviceability of a wide network. Seismic
analysis of tunnels close to seismogenic faults is a complex problem, which is often neglected at the design stage for the
lack of specific codes or guidelines for the design of underground structures in seismic conditions and also because, as mentioned
above, underground structures are considered less vulnerable to earthquake loading. This paper investigates the seismic response
of deep tunnels focusing on the required steps for a proper design under both static and dynamic loading. The study aims at
contributing to improve the methods currently used for the seismic analysis of underground structures. At this purpose, the
seismic response of a deep tunnel in Southern Italy has been investigated along the transversal direction. The infrastructure
is part of the railway switch line connecting Caserta to Foggia in the Southern Apennines which is one of the most active
seismic regions in Italy. The seismic response in the transversal direction has been analysed by using the pseudo-static approach
as well as through advanced numerical modeling using the spectral element method coupled with a kinematic approach for finite
fault simulations. The pseudo-static approach has been implemented using a closed-form analytical solution. The results obtained
from advanced numerical modeling and the pseudo-static method have been compared to assess their validity and limitations. 相似文献

Through their consumption behavior, households are responsible for 72% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, they are key actors in reaching the 1.5 °C goal under the Paris Agreement. However, the possible contribution and position of households in climate policies is neither well understood, nor do households receive sufficiently high priority in current climate policy strategies. This paper investigates how behavioral change can achieve a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in European high-income countries. It uses theoretical thinking and some core results from the HOPE research project, which investigated household preferences for reducing emissions in four European cities in France, Germany, Norway and Sweden. The paper makes five major points: First, car and plane mobility, meat and dairy consumption, as well as heating are the most dominant components of household footprints. Second, household living situations (demographics, size of home) greatly influence the household potential to reduce their footprint, even more than country or city location. Third, household decisions can be sequential and temporally dynamic, shifting through different phases such as childhood, adulthood, and illness. Fourth, short term voluntary efforts will not be sufficient by themselves to reach the drastic reductions needed to achieve the 1.5 °C goal; instead, households need a regulatory framework supporting their behavioral changes. Fifth, there is a mismatch between the roles and responsibilities conveyed by current climate policies and household perceptions of responsibility. For a better understanding of solar magnetic field evolution it is appropriate to evaluate the magnetic helicity based on observations and to compare it with numerical simulation results. We have developed a method for calculating the vector potential of a magnetic field given in a finite volume; the method requires the magnetic flux to be balanced on all the side boundaries of the considered volume. Our method uses a fast Laplace/Poisson solver to obtain the vector potentials for a given magnetic field and for the corresponding potential (current-free) field. This allows an efficient calculation of the relative magnetic helicity in a finite 3D volume. We tested our approach on a theoretical model (Low and Lou, Astrophys. J. 352, 343, 1990) and also applied our method to the magnetic field above active region NOAA 8210 obtained by a photospheric-data-driven MHD model. We found that the amount of accumulated relative magnetic helicity coincides well with the relative helicity inflow through the boundaries in the ideal and non-ideal cases. The temporal evolution of relative magnetic helicity is consistent with that of magnetic energy. The maximum value of normalized helicity, H m/Φ2=0.0298, is reached just before a drastic energy release by magnetic reconnection. This value is close to the corresponding value inferred from the formula that connects the magnetic flux and the accumulated magnetic helicity based on the observations of solar active regions. 相似文献

In this study we characterized the deep assemblages dwelling at 200–250 m depth on a large shoal off Capo St. Vito Promontory (Northwestern coast of Sicily, South Tyrrhenian Sea) by means of ROV‐imaging. Two assemblages of suspension feeders, dominated by the gorgonian Callogorgia verticillata and by the black coral Leiopathes glaberrima, together with a tanatocoenosis of the colonial yellow scleractinian coral Dendrophyllia cornigera, were examined. The three main species were significatively distributed into two areas corresponding to different habitat preferences: a more elevated hardground hosting black corals and a gently sloping, silted rocky bottom hosting the other coral species. The study area is subjected to a heavy pressure from the professional fishery, resulting in the mechanical damage of numerous colonies, some of which are then overgrown by various epibionts including a parasitic bioluminescent zoanthid, new for the Mediterranean fauna, and tentatively identified as Isozoanthus primoidus. In the Mediterranean Sea, these deep off‐shore rocky banks are widely known among recreational and professional fishermen due to their rich fish fauna. However, there has been still little effort into quantifying and characterizing the extent of the impact and its consequences on the benthic communities, which may represent, as in this case, only a partial picture of their original structure and extent. 相似文献

Characterization of active fault scarps from LiDAR data: a case study from Central Apennines (Italy)

A high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM, 1 ms spacing) derived from an airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) campaign was used in an attempt to characterize the structural and erosive elements of the geometry of the Pettino fault, a seismogenic normal fault in Central Apennines (Italy). Four 90- to 280 m-long fault scarp segments were selected and the surface between the base and the top of the scarps was analyzed through the statistical analysis of the following DEM-derived parameters: altitude, height of the fault scarp, and distance along strike, slope, and aspect. The results identify slopes of up to 40° in faults lower reaches interpreted as fresh faces, 34° up the faces. The Pettino fault maximum long-term slip rate (0.6–1.1 mm/yr) was estimated from the scarp heights, which are up to 12–19 m in the selected four segments, and the age (ca. 18 ka) of the last glacial erosional phase in the area. The combined analysis of the DEM-derived parameters allows us to (a) define aspects of three-dimensional scarp geometry, (b) decipher its geomorphological significance, and (c) estimate the long-term slip rate. 相似文献
